Enjoying the iconic view from Bloubergstrand was one of the things he missed the most being locked up in a foreign prison for almost three years. A much relieved Phil Young (50) from Table View is very happy to be back home after being released from a jail in Afghanistan last week. Young was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in 2010 after being found guilty of murder in an Afghan court. He was working as a deputy project manager in Afghanistan for Anham, an American logistics supply company which had been contracted by the US government’s Counter Narcotics Advisory team when the incident happened. Young and a colleague were returning to the Anham compound in the Helmund Province when the deputy security leader of the base approached and started firing at their vehicle. Young returned fire and killed the guard. Even though the courts found that he had no motive other than self defence for killing the guard, that it was not premeditated and that he acted equally, he was found guilty and sentenced to prison. During an appeal hearing his sentence was increased to 16 years. Later it was reduced to seven years. While in prison Young’s family and friends rallied to support for his release and created awareness of his situation through Facebook and by writing to several SA and Afghanistan government officials. The remission of Young’s sentence and his early release was thanks to a decree issued by the Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai. “It is a great sense of relief to be back in a country where there is some kind of law,” Young said on Monday after spending the weekend catching up with his three children, family and friends. “The court cases are surreal. Young says Afghans believe that if someone is dead someone has to go to prison. “I was in prison with a chef of a roadside restaurant. The gas bottle exploded and both the owner of the restaurant and the assistant died. The chef had burns all over his body and a piece of shrapnel torn through his stomach. He was imprisoned for 20 years for the deaths of the other two. One would think the owner would be responsible for the gas bottle but because the chef survived he was convicted,” Young said giving some insight into the country’s inner workings. He is however very grateful to be home. Cape Town has changed quite a bit since he was last here. “As we were coming along the (beach) road I asked what train was parked in the sea. They told me it’s the ship that they never managed to remove,” he said. Rescue plans to float the still intact Seli 1 were still under way when Young left the country a week before the shooting. “I am amazed by the changes in Table View and Cape Town. The soccer stadium wasn’t even finished when I left,” said Young. He
managed to watch some of the Soccer World Cup matches on a television in the clinic of the Pul-e-Charkhi prison where he was kept, removed from the other prisoners for his own safety. His unjustified imprisonment has also cost him a lot of valuable family time. “Both my boys have gotten into gym and they are huge. My daughter was nine when I left, she could sit on my lap while I read to her. Now she is 12 and too big and heavy for my lap,” he says. “I have missed my son’s 21st and the other graduating from school. You can give me two million rands and it won’t be enough to make up for that time lost,” he says. Still he considers himself fortunate. “I could have spent much longer in prison or worse, it could have been me, face down in the dust. I have no remorse for killing Abdul Ghafar. The guy tried to kill me and I don’t like that, I actually find it disturbing. I am glad I walked away from it. The fact that I spent time in prison because of a poor decision by the court is secondary to my survival,” he says. “I tell my kids that we are privileged to live in a city as beautiful as this, in a country as beautiful as this. You certainly get that when you are thrown into a foreign prison. But I play in big boy games so I have to wear my big boy panties,” he says with a smirk.
Although being in prison was bad, the aftermath of the incident is just as bad. A former policeman, Young has been working as a security contractor overseas since 1996 and says his criminal record is going to make things tough. “I am a 50-year-old white male in South Africa with a murder conviction, good luck to me finding work,” he says laughing. “I am almost forced to work overseas, but it is not a punishment, I actually like it,” he says. “My criminal record will definitely make travelling a problem. They can refuse to issue me a visa without having to question the circumstances around my conviction. This has a massive impact on my life,” he says. He is however very serious on clearing his name. Before he was sent to prison records of his fingerprints and retina scans were also sent off to Interpol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). One of the first things he will focus on is bringing his case before a European court and having the case overturned and his name cleared. “I will most probably take my case to some Dutch court,” he says.

Eight bust in drug raid Eight drug dealers were arrested over the weekend following an operation by the Table View police. The focus was on the problematic area of Parkwest Centre and the surrounding streets which includes Parklands Main Road and Dorchester Drive. Three arrests were made at Parkwest Centre and five along Parklands Main Road and Dorchester Drive. Charges included the possession of tik, cocaine, heroine and dagga to the value of R10 000. “More operations will be conducted at these hotspots, as the presence of drug dealers is influencing the safety of scholars and also leads to temptation,” says local police spokesperson Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro. Munro says the police in co-operation with the Table View Neighbourhood Watch and Metro Police will be making a concerted effort to rid Parkwest Centre of all drug dealings.

Sealtossing ‘a shark activity’ LEON STEENKAMP
A seal being tossed around like a rag doll is another indication of some shark activity along the Table View beachfront. Jacques Smith (43) from Sunset Beach and his son were enjoying some lunch on the balcony of their fourth storey beachfront flat when they witnessed the seal being flung into the air on Monday 2 April. “The seal was tossed into the air head over heels some 30 metres. I did not see a fin or a shadow in the water but there was a splash and then the seal was thrown again. This continued for about 15 minutes,” Smith says. The incident took place right in front of the
Seli 1 wreck about midway between the beach and the wreck. “It took place behind the breakers about where I would stand to catch that back wave,” says Smith who is also a keen stand up paddler. He says there was no mistaking the fact that the seal was being attacked. “It didn’t torpedo like it does when jumping out of the water. It was flung with force and eventually the birds came to pick at the bits that were falling off.” The conditions on the day were overcast and there was no one in the choppy, “dirtylooking” water, he says. Smith says as far as he knows other than a Great White shark there is only one other animal that plays with its prey in that man-
ner – an Orca or Killer Whale. “I know there are some of them in False Bay at the moment but I don’t know whether we have any along our coast,” he says. Smith who grew up in Melkbosstrand and who has been surfing since the age of 18 says he has only seen a shark along the West Coast waters once. He speculates that the presence of he wreck has led to a channel being formed, which forces the seals to swim close to the surface and making an ideal spot for the ambush hunting tactics of a Great White. “This won’t prevent me from going out there again ... but I don’t think I will be laying out there on my surfboard in a black wetsuit,” Smith says.
Club event for optimists An event to raise funds for the South African Optimist Sailing team competing in this year’s African and World Championships will be held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club this coming Saturday (26 May). Brandon Ferriera and Henning Kock from the Milnerton Aquatics Club are both in the national team. The event will include a talk by Adrian Kuttel about his Global Ocean Race experience, a charity auction and a Las Vegas themed disco. The event starts at 19:00 at the club’s function hall. Cops say hide your phones Local police are still inundated with cases of cellphone theft and have urged the public to be more alert when using their devices on the street. Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro says individuals should avoid talking on the phone while walking in public. “Always be aware of your surroundings.
We still find people standing at bus stops with earphones on and cellphones in their hands. This creates an opportunity for criminals,” she says. She added that the police want to be proactive and want to decrease the chances of cellphone robberies happening with the help of the public.

MyCiTi turns 1, with a day of free bus rides Free bus rides for everyone are on the cards this coming weekend as the City of Cape Town celebrates the one-year anniversary of the MyCiTi bus service. All Capetonians are invited to try out the MyCiTi bus for free on Sunday 27 May as part of the anniversary celebrations. Sunday it will be just short of one year since the full MyCiTi system started operating from Table View to the Civic Centre in the City Bowl. The celebration provides the city with an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved, but also look forward to the expansion of the system across the Peninsula in the years to come. “We have had enormous support from across the city since we started rolling out our first MyCiTi buses, and we want to sincerely thank each and every passenger that has made use of a MyCiTi bus,” said Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater. The MyCiTi system has already registered its three millionth passenger trip, and it is expected that this figure will keep increas-

ing as future phases of the system come onstream. This includes a network of new feeder routes in the Cape Town CBD, and along the Atlantic Seaboard towards Hout Bay and to Salt River. “A lot of hard work still lies ahead, but on Sunday 27 May we want to invite everyone to celebrate with us,” Herron said. All trips on the MyCiTi buses will be free for the day, and no Myconnect card will be needed to pay for a trip. Passengers can visit any station kiosk on the day to collect their pass, which can be used to ride on as many buses and routes as desired for the day. Passengers who begin their trip on a feeder bus can get their pass from an ambassador on the bus. “So there is no need to make your way to a station first to collect a pass. On the day, we hope people will try out the airport service, take the bus to the Waterfront, or even use MyCiTi to visit Big Bay for lunch. All our routes will be operating on a Sunday schedule,” said Herron. A local charity helping women in need will be launching a campaign against women abuse in Table View tomorrow.
No Shame campaign aimed at urging women to speak up about their hurtful experiences and seek help. The launch will take the form of an exhibition and a fundraiser at the Bayside Mall on 24 May from 09:00 to 19:00. Supporters of the project can donate toiletries, non perishable goods and money towards a safe home for women who are homeless, abused and victims of rape. “For us to intervene, it costs us over R2 800 per week for fuel allowance to many different destinations, telephone calls, feeding, toiletries, emergency medical call-outs, water and electricity. We don’t have corporate sponsors or government funding,” Swaratlhe-Tlhapane says. Visitors to the exhibition can order a No Shame T-shirt for R65 or buy a book which features 15 stories of women who are striving daily beyond adversity. Visit www.womenandbeyond.org.za.
Women and Beyond is a non profit organisation that primarily focuses on helping women living in informal settlements and rural areas across South Africa to address poverty and HIV/Aids. Women and Beyond situated in Blaauwberg Road, Table View has for the last four years also been working with abused women and children in Table View and Milnerton. “Every week we receive over 30 cases from the police, hospitals, social workers, communities and other NPO/NGOs reporting women who have been sexually violated, abused, battered, bruised and homeless,” says Reverend Tsholanang Ethel Swaratlhe-Tlhapane, founder of Women and Beyond. To create awareness about the dire situation the organisation will be launching its

The Mom and Me Charity Tea was in aid of the Little Lambs Christian Daycare which provides early childhood development services and care to the poor in the community of Imizamo Yethu, near Hout Bay. Every grain of rice will help The food drive of the Pick n Pay Table View Shopping Centre will this year focus on rice. The “Great – Rice” initiative will run during the months of June and July and coincide with the Olympic Games in London. “We are hoping to erect a big pot to be located within the centre and we are asking shoppers to make a donation of rice and other non perishable goods,” said centre manager Athena Beard. Police grab two thieves An alert pair of eyes and the quick response by local law enforcement officers stopped two escaping thieves in their tracks. On Saturday 12 May at 14:00 a passerby noticed three men breaking into a black Corsa bakkie in the parking area of the Eden on the Bay shopping centre in Big Bay. The incident was reported to the Big Bay Law Enforcement charge office located adjacent to the parking area. The three men fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Chico Golf. The information was despatched to the two law enforcement officers on patrol who spotted the Golf on the R27 road near Sunningdale heading towards Cape Town. The officers requested assistance via radio and Law Enforcement and Metro Police vehicles were despatched.
Officers stopped the vehicle on the corner of the R27 and Sandown roads. The description of the occupants and registration of the vehicle corresponded with that received from the complainant. While the passengers of the vehicle were being questioned the driver of the vehicle gave them the slip, driving off without his accomplices. The officers detained the two suspects on a charge of theft out of a motor vehicle and handed them over to the Table View Police for further investigation. The third suspect is still at large, but his identity is known to authorities. “We thank the member of the public for his alertness and quick response in reporting the incident. This is exactly the type of cooperation that law enforcement requires,” said Richard Bosman, executive director of the city’s safety and security department.
Lifting the lid: Construction is currently under way to upgrade the food court at the popular Bayside Mall in Table View. To ensure as little disruption as possible to shoppers, the new atrium roof is constructed above the existing roof and hung from the atrium structure. Once the new roof is fixed in place, the steel from the existing roof will be ‘cut out’ under the atrium – exposing the new, higher volume ceiling. The famous Vierendeel method of bridge constructi on, developed in Belgium, is used to pull off this magnificent stunt and build the new skylights. With the use of 200m² of glass the food court will be illuminated by natural light. The ceilings will be raised from 3m to 9,5m. Saved, but no smile ... for now LEON STEENKAMP
Although he is happier than he has been in a long time Ralston Theunis is not keen on smiling. He hopes a kind-hearted soul will sponsor him with a set of dentures. The fact that the 25-year-old is missing some 12 teeth is a grim reminder of his time spent on the streets. “I used about a gram of tik every day,” Theunis says, explaining his dental dilemma. He is one of six young men that are part of the Independent Living Programme of TLC Outreach Projects, a non-profit organisation helping the destitute in Table View. The six-month programme aims to help get youth-at-risk off the street and equip them for a better life where they can sustain themselves. Born in Atlantis, Ralston lived with his father and grandmother. In 1992 he was introduced to the streets of Table View for the first time. The death of his father two years later saw the streets become his permanent home. “I didn’t go back home again. I stayed on the streets and started begging for money to buy glue and petrol to sniff,” he says. To keep up their drug habit, Ralston and his friends started breaking into cars. The subsequent clash with the law saw him spend quite a bit of time in reform school. Ralston’s first involvement with
Colleen Pietersen, founder of TLC Projects, came when he was 10 years old. After Pietersen took in the first street child, Ralston and his friends were intrigued. “One Sunday after she dropped him off at the bus station we asked him about staying at a white woman and asked if we too can stay there,” he says. “She took me home, I had a haircut, I washed myself and she gave me something to eat. “She started teaching us about the Lord. She let us sleep in her house. She was like a mother to us. She started trusting us in her house. She would leave her wallet, bag and cellphone on the table,” Ralston says. The Pietersen home with its TV room stocked with videos and a pool table was something he had never experienced before. “That was never in my life before. This was the first time that something like this came my way.” Pietersen saw to it that the boys started going to school again and organised a house in Atlantis where Ralston and five other boys were put up. “We had an ouma and oupa that cooked for us and looked after us. On weekends we went to Colleen and she took us to a farm along the N7 where we had a trampoline and could ride bicycle. In an effort to end liquor abuse, Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, led an unannounced raid on establishments that serve alcohol in Maitland last week. Winde was accompanied by officers from Maitland Police Station, the local Neighbourhood Watch, inspectors from the Western Cape Liquor Authority, members of the community and the local councillor, all of whom have joined forces to ensure that licensed establishments in the area are abiding by the terms of the liquor law and their licence conditions. Speaking before the raid, Winde said: “It is encouraging to see members of the police, the community, Neighbourhood Watch and councillors taking practical steps to end the scourge of liquor abuse in our province. It is only in partnership ‘Better Together’ that we will ensure that liquor traders operate responsibly. Three hundred people die every month in our province due to alcohol-related incidents. We will be coming down hard on liquor traders that do not keep to their licence conditions and whose irresponsible actions may be a factor in these deaths.” Winde added: “We will be conducting liquor raids across the province in the coming months. Our aim is not to destroy businesses, but ensure that they operate within the law (to ) encourage liquor traders to clean up their acts.” According to section 82 of the new Western Cape Liquor Act, failure by a licensee to comply with their licensing conditions may result in the suspension of their licence, a fine, prosecution or the cancellation of the licence. Fines ranging from R1 000 to R3 500 were handed out to liquor traders for violations ranging from expired fire extinguishers, obstructed fire escapes and the sale of food without the required certificate.

The project involves knitting scarves for learners of a local school which must still be chosen. The scarves must be navy blue in colour, 1,2m long and 15cm wide. It takes a village to raise a child What would society be without the inherent joy and contagious giggles of happy children? You must have a heart of stone not to be deeply touched by that. You also have a heart of solid rock if you don’t give thought to the vulnerability of children. They can’t protect or fend for themselves. They cannot educate or love themselves. They need us to do so. This week is Child Protection Week and we should realise that as a society and as parents of privileged offspring we are also responsible for children who receive no love or protection at all. Yes, charity begins at home, and you should be willing to give your first bit of energy and money in loving, protecting and educating your child; because those are the simple needs of children: love, safety, clothes and food, and the example of how to live life from a responsible parent with strong values. Looking after our own children, however, is simply not enough. With a bit of creative thinking, you and your privileged family have to do something, big or small, to better the lives of less fortunate children. In doing that, you create a better future for your own children too. They will be able to work and live among peers who are solutions, not problems. That’s why you and me have the non-negotiable responsibility to love ALL our children.

Show the disabled some consideration Thank you to Veronica January, whose letter “Transport still big hurdle for disabled” appeared in the Wednesday, 2 May issue of TygerBurger! Her opinion echoes that of so many persons with disabilities who are capable of being independent, but society’s limitations disable them. The Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities is a non-profit organisation providing social services to over 10 000 clients in the Western Cape. One of the chief concerns amongst persons with disabilities is the lack of adequate public transport for those with disabilities. It was for this reason that the Association was instrumental in founding the Dial-A-Ride (DAR) transport system which began with four accessible vehicles and has grown over the years to 27 vehicles. It has to be said that DAR was never meant to take the place of an accessible transport system. It was merely a stepping stone until such time as the city, in consultation with persons with disabilities and relevant NGOs could formulate an inclusive transport system – one that could be used by
all individuals equally, including persons with disabilities. The Association acknowledges the tremendous contribution made by the city in the MyCiTi buses but, as Veronica so rightly points out, there is still much to be done, specifically in outlying suburbs. We encourage the public to assist persons with disabilities and their transport needs, and do so with respect. Lend a hand to someone who has difficulty driving their wheelchair over a dropped kerb. Perhaps you could provide an arm to lean on for someone whose crutches get stuck in gravel and other modern walkway coverings. Taxi drivers, please reconsider charging extra for the wheelchair, as often the person receives a disability grant and cannot afford it. beste en duurste. Die motorhuis was omgeskep in een groot treinuitleg. Menige ure is daar deurgebring terwyl klein plastiese mense lewensgetrou geverf is, en geboue, spore en brûe gemaak is waarop die treine kon loop. Op 45 het ek my werk by Eskom bedank en tot die sending toegetree. Ná ’n besoek aan Israel wou ek graag mense wat dit nie kon bekostig nie, die kans gee om te gaan. Ek moes al die mooi treinmodelle verkoop vir die nodige fondse. Nou woon ons in Parow en het ek tyd om
weer aan ’n stokperdjie te dink. Wat is die moontlikheid dat daar êrens in die Kaap ook ’n persoon is wat dalk sy lewe lank modeltreine, wat nou êrens in ’n kartondoos op ’n rak stof vergader, versamel het? The silence is sporadically broken by the tweets of birds. “What did I do to deserve this?” she thinks to herself. “How did I get to be so lucky?” Tour d’Afrique’s Catharina Robbertze hears a car approaching in the distance. She waves at the quizzical faces in the passing vehicle before absolute peace embraces her once again. Robbertze’s Spreetshoogte experience is the highlight of a tour full of highlights. TygerBurger caught up with the entourage of 55 people as they headed through the northern suburbs near the end of their adventure. The very idea of summing up this unforgettable endeavour in a few pitiful words is absurd... It is, in some aspects, even more challenging than cycling through Africa, because one is possible and the other not. On 14 January at 10:00 the journey to Cape Town started in freezing temperatures at the pyramids in Cairo, and at 13:00 on 12 May they arrived in Cape Town to hugs and tears. That is a heavily-laden ellipse... The only way one can truly fill that ellipse is to refer the reader to www.tourdafrique.com/blog/tourdafrique where there are pages after pages of golden moments. One could also just use one’s imagination with the following parameters, which Robbertze penned in her blog: “The craziest, dirtiest and most memorable ferry crossing ever; scorching days in Sudan and being invited into strangers’ homes for tea; travelling back in time to Ethiopia; Ethiopian coffee and juice; Tanzanian hospitality, friendliness and parties; the sight of the glorious Victoria Falls; the silence falling over camp when an elephant strolled into camp; the beauty and desolation of Namibia; and ultimately friendships made.” Squeezed in between the highs were the inevitable lows, such as when one 60-year-old cyclist broke her pelvis, collar bone and a couple of ribs when she took a short, sharp trip from her bicycle seat to Mother Earth. Another noteworthy inclusion must surely be that the oldest cyclist on this 12 000km tour was 65 years old and the youngest just 20. The 10th Tour d’Afrique, the longest timed stage race in the world, came to a conclusion on the Saturday when 37 full tour riders crossed the finish line on a picture perfect day in Cape Town. Loved ones urged the riders on as they crossed the line and then once the hugs commenced, it was very difficult to let go again. Robbertze concludes: “Champagne was flowing and tunes pumping and the dancing continued until the early hours of the morning as Cape Town lived up to its reputation as one of the best party spots in South Africa.”

Time slows racing to the horizon

Gravity made fools of both me and my colleague Leon Steenkamp on Thursday when Donovan Symes tried to chase the horizon in a Porsche 935 at Killarney Race Track. If it wasn’t for the passenger seat, I would’ve been stuck to the rear window of the 450 horsepowered time machine like those Garfield soft toys. The Cafe 9 racing team would’ve needed a spatula to remove my flattened body from the window. As it were, the surprisingly
comfortable seat absorbed most of the G-forces. TygerBurger was invited to experience first-hand what Pro Tour racing is all about last week when Donovan Symes treated a few media representatives to a couple of “hot laps” around the race track. What! A! Rush! When Symes accelerated furiously down the track, my face tried to occupy the space normally reserved for the back of my head. I tried to remind him to step on the brakes as a sharp turn roared towards us, but my tongue was
fused to my soft palate. As a result, the statement, “I know you are an excellent driver Donovan, but that turn in the road concerns me” sounded something like “Gheeeooorgh groooxer ogo, urrghhseee!” Stanley Kubrick special effects blurred reality and suddenly I had the distinct feeling that we were travelling back in time. Before my Killarney neardeath experience, the fastest I’ve ever moved in a vehicle was 165km/h, so 220km/h is quite a jump. I could’ve sworn I heard Captain Kirk say, “Go to warp speed

The theory of relativity states that the closer one travels to the speed of light, the slower time passes. I contest that, because the home straight was over before it even began. It was disconcerting to see the car I was in racing away in the distance. We suddenly stopped in the pits.
I bungled out of the red monster with a new-found respect for life. “Just act cool, André ...” I said to myself while blubbing with adrenalin and glee. I stumbled over my feet as I walked away and cast an accusing look at the non-existent stone that made me lose my balance. Then, when I finally drove away in my pedestrian Toyota Yaris, my theory of irrelativity was formulated. Time stood still when I had to drive 60km/h. . Mighty’s love conquers the abuse LEON STEENKAMP
He has been beaten, bitten and broken during his hard life on the streets but Mighty still portrays the character of a true gentleman. To the uninformed it might seem that Michelle Ramage saved her beloved rescue dog but in truth, he saved her. It is the wonderful story of courage and love winning over the bad in this world that has inspired Ramage to enter Mighty in the SPCA Mutt of the Year competition. “We have been through so much to stay together. Many sleepless nights, loads of tears and much anxiety but well worth it. To me Mighty is more than the Mutt of the Year – he is the Mutt of a Lifetime!” she says. So taken was the SPCA with Mighty’s story that they hounded Ramage to enter him into the competition. “Mighty embodies everything we love about dogs,” she says. Ramage and her pet’s paths crossed when she was still living in Kensington. “I stayed in a block of flats and met this beautiful stray dog as a pup. His street name was ‘Whitey’ although due to dirt he was grey and smelly!” Since her complex prohibited the keeping of dogs Ramage always tried to feed the young dog whenever she could. “He was just so sweet natured despite the fact that he was constantly
in pain and had clearly been hurt by others. Sadly I would patch him up when I could and would whisper: ‘Don’t forget, I’m taking you with me when I move ... promise’,” she recalls. After house-sitting for a friend for three weeks, Ramage returned home to find Whitey missing. She started questioning people in her street and eventually someone led her to a nearby informal settlement. Horrified she found him badly hurt, very sick and barely alive. “He had been attacked by more than one dog and the wounds had become so infected that he had blood poisoning, with puss dripping out of his eyes and ears. Book youth jazz tickets before all sold The 10th annual Artscape Youth Jazz Festival will take place on Saturday 2 June at the Artscape Theatre from 19:30 to 22:00. The festival is directed and conducted by legendary trumpeter, educator and performer, Ian Smith. This year’s event will feature seven solo artists, who were all chosen to play at the festival because of their talent, training and accomplishments. These soloists all come from the Western Cape and include 24-year-old vocalist Adele Wyngaard from Kraaifontein and 22-yearold bass guitar player Brendon Hendricks from Delft. Adele completed her Bachelor of Music Degree at the South African College of Music (SACM) at the University of Cape Town in 2011. She was then awarded a scholarship to attend Europe’s prestigious Norwegian Academy of Music. Some of her accomplishments include performing for former first lady Graca Machel in 2007. Brendon has been playing the guitar since the age of seven. He has performed with many church bands over the years and is a member of the Delft Big Band, under the direction of Ian Smith. His television appearances include Expresso, Hectic Nine, Kwela, Against All Odds, and he has been featured twice on Nigel Pierce’s show on Good Hope Radio. Also performing at the event will be a jazz ensemble including legendary jazz trumpeter Ian Smith, drummer, Kevin Gibson and double bass guitar player Wesley Rustin, amongst others. Lovers of dessert wines (or “stickies” as they’re known in the industry), fortified wines like Port and Muscadel and brandies, have always had a guaranteed good time at the annual High Street Shopping Village Winter Wine Festival, and this year’s eighth fest, from 21-23 June is no exception. An added pleasure this year is the specialist dessert wine and brandy tasting events held by the Cape Wine Academy, where a range of six wines consisting of pot-stilled brandy, Port and dessert wine, will be presented by an expert taster. “Last year was the first time we offered the Wine Theatre as part of the festival proceedings,” says marketing manager of Propergation Estates, Elize Walters. “After a slow start, things really got going once visitors re-

What started as a mutual love for Smashing Pumpkins, has developed into Firethorn. Nielan Adams (guitar and vocals), Nicholas Knipe (guitar), Daniel Thackwray (drums) and Peter Hardenberg (bass) have been playing together for about five years. TygerBurger caught up with the band at Rooftop Studios, where they were rehearsing. Neilan and Nicholas knew each other as neighbours, living in Firethorn Street. Neilan met Peter at college and was introduced to Daniel through a mutual friend. “We all liked Pumpkins,” Neilan says, adding: “We had never met each other and in the first practise we played for like four hours doing Pumpkins covers.” Firethorn
“We jammed for a long time before we started gigging,” Daniel says. Neilan says they only played their first gig after a year, wanting to make sure they took a tight act to the stage. Firethorn describe their music as “alternative hard rock mixed with different influences”.
Daniel says that when you look at all of the band’s music, you will notice that it spans genres. “Some of the songs are so different we are sometimes too afraid to play them,” Daniel says. Nicholas says some of this is to do with the fact that they have a wide range of influences and many of their favourite musicians are artists who don’t do the same thing continuously. “We listen to rock music that coloured people don’t generally listen to,” Nielan adds. “When we write, it’s that rock with stuff from coloured culture, like rhythm,” he says. Firethorn have decided to keep a low profile while they are busy recording. They are working on their first EP, which they hope to release in the next two or three months. South Africa will send a strong team to the 14th Braille Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India to be played in August. Five players, Sam Isaacs, Frederick Liebenberg, Melvin Isaacs, Cicel Vosloo and MJ Terblanche will represent the Proteas. Clyde Leonard, who is the team manager and also the director for all physically disabled players, is up-beat about the team’s chances of bringing home a medal or two. “It’s going to be tough, no doubt about it. The players from countries such as Russia, Bulgaria, Poland and Czechoslovakia are all top notch on the board. Games can last up to six hours, which means a lot of concentration is needed. “Our goal is to be ranked inside the top 20 of the world, it will acquire a lot of hard work, but we are playing our way in the right direction. We won one medal last year in Greece, and I’m confident we can make it two or three this year,” said Leonard. At the recent South African Braille Open held in Worcester, the players showcased their abilities to cement their places in the national team. The group of girls pass by in a blur of spinning wheels, bumping bodies and much shouting. Welcome to the world of roller derby. This sport which started in 1950 in America and achieved the pinnacle of its popularity in the ’70s is now finding favour on local soil. Roller derby is a women-only contact sport played by two teams of five members each. Players roller skate in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups called “jams” in which both teams designate a scoring player known as the “jammer” who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. American born Shawn Graaff who has called SA her home for the last three years recently started the Mother City Mayhem roller derby league in Cape Town with the help of a couple of other team members.
“The league currently consists of 35 members and we have one team, the ‘Iron Meisies’,” Graaff says. She explains with a mysterious wink that they are on the verge of establishing a second team but that more will be revealed at a later date. New members join the league rather than a specific team. “It does not make economic sense to have teams on their own because of the cost of equipment and hiring a venue to train. The teams are there to promote the competitiveness of the sport and for marketing purposes.” Graaff says since they started the league in August last year there has been a great response. “We have experienced a huge uptake with a 20 percent growth in members every month.
