2nd chance at maths, science have passed Grade 12 with a minimum of 50 % in Afrikaans or English, a minimum of 30 % in mathematics and physical sciences, or 80 % in mathematical literacy and also 50 % in any four of the subjects designated for university admission. The students doing mathematics and physical sciences, will rewrite the Grade 12 examination in these two subjects at the end of the year. Prospective students may apply for the programme until 31 January and application forms can be downloaded from the website at www.imstus.sun.ac.za/scimathus.html or alternatively phone 021 808 2301 or 021 808 3032.

Students who have passed matric but did not obtain a high score in mathematics and physical sciences, have a chance to improve their marks with the help of the successful SciMathUS programme at Stellenbosch University (SU). They will hopefully follow in the footsteps of the 2012 group, where all 104 students who wrote the final examination passed, also continuing the 100 % pass rate over the previous four years. The programme offers talented and motivated students, who are educationally disadvantaged and did not qualify to be admitted to university programmes, a second chance. Students may apply for SciMathUS if they

Cause of BCA fire may be a cigarette butt LEON STEENKAMP Firefighters struggled for around eight hours to extinguish a fire that ravaged some 30 hectares of the Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) last week. According to the reserve manager Jacques Kuyler the fire started just south of the reserve next to the R27 road on Tuesday morning at around 10:00. “We suspect it might have started from a motorist throwing a cigarette out of a window,” he said. Firefighters from the Milnerton and Melkbosstrand fire departments, Working on Fire and personnel from the neighbouring Atlantic Beach Golf Estate attended to the fire. “The temperature was in the high 30°C with a wind of between 25 and 30 km/h. The weather service had issued a warning that there would be ideal conditions for fires

along the West Coast,” Kuyler said. According to a reader, Alida Carpenter, the one lane of the R27 was closed to traffic. The traffic department in Milnerton confirmed that they had officers on the scene from 13:00 to 14:30. The fire was eventually brought under control at 18:00 that evening at the foot of Blaauwberg Hill. According to Kuyler the vegetation consumed in the fire is strandveld. “This piece of the reserve is covered with seven-year-old veld which was about ready to be burned. The last time it burned was in December 2006.” Kuyler said thus far the only two animal casualties that they have come across are two Bloubergstrand dwarf burrowing skink (Scelotes montispectus). This species is endemic to the BCA. The fire also damaged some poles of the reserve’s boundary fence along the R27.
