There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for frustrated commuters who have to drive at a snail’s pace along along the R27 and Blaauwberg Road every day. The City of Cape Town on Monday confirmed that construction on the road linking Sandown Road and the MR28/N7 will start in June. Completion of the project is estimated for December next year. The traffic congestion along these two main roads out of Table View has increased dramatically over the last couple of years due to rapid expansion in the area. Of late the increase in road construction, mainly to accommodate the lanes and bus stations for the MyCiTi bus service, has worsened the situation. The spend on infrastructure by the city is an effort to address the

traffic problems by providing an efficient public transport system along the West Coast. Construction on the Sandown link which will provide a muchneeded third exit out of the Table View area was scheduled to start in November last year but has been on hold following a dispute between local developers and the city’s environmental authorities. Developers, Parklands Joint Venture – made up of the Aska Property Group and Milnerton Estates – and the city’s environmental and heritage management branch were at odds over certain requirements that would mean sacrificing much viable commercial land. “This parcel of land was previously studied and parcels of fynbos were identified and their protection was taken into consideration in the planning of future developments then. Now the city’s environmental

department requires some additional 90 hectares of land,” Aska’s marketing director Tony Clarke was quoted by TygerBurger last year. The office of Brett Herron, mayco member for transport, roads and stormwater confirmed the issues that caused the original delay have been resolved. “We expect the approval by the provincial government’s planning advisory board of the third development framework (Rivergate) rezoning by the end of April. The subdivision plan will then be processed by the city. The developer will then appoint the contractor. It is expected that the contractor will be on site by the end of June,” Herron’s spokesman, Arthur Clayton said. Road works that are currently under way or projects scheduled to commence include: . MyCiTi construction on Race-

course Road (linking Otto du Plessis and Koeberg is set for completion in September; . Extension of Sandown Road to link with the MR28 and N7 is scheduled to begin in June and be completed in December 2013; . Rehabilitation of the R27 from Racecourse Road to Sandown Road is scheduled for 2015; . N7 freeway extension (interchange access to M5 link to Melkbosstrand) is scheduled to commence in May 2012 and be completed in November 2014; . Potsdam MyCiTi road north of Blaauwberg intersection is scheduled to commence in June and be completed in July 2013; . Koeberg Road MyCiTi lanes planned for 2013/2014, and . Blaauwberg Road MyCiTi lanes from R27 to Koeberg (widening of the road included) is scheduled for completion in May 2013.
