Parklands on the brink
LEON STEENKAMP The drug situation in Parklands has become so bad, that dealers are now throwing their merchandise through open car windows in the hopes of making a buck. According to chairman of the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) drug trading in the area has taken on epidemic proportions. “Parklands Main Road, Dorchester Road and specifically the Park West complex is a big problem,” Roberts said. He adds that drug dealers are now so desperate and blatant in their dealings that they are almost harassing innocent passers-by to buy their goods. “It has been reported on numerous occasions that dealers throw drugs into open windows of cars stopping along the road and then insist on payment,” he said. So fearless are these dealers that even the signage of the TVNW does not deter them from flaunting their goods. “I have neighbourhood watch signage on my car and even I have been offered drugs,” Roberts said. Chairman of the Table View Community Police Forum Andrew Brace agrees that the situation is out of control. “My 18-year-old daughter was offered drugs recently when she went to pick up my youngest at CBC St John’s. I was in Johannesburg when I got the call and I went cold. Then my phone started ringing off the hook, saying my daughter is in trouble,” Brace said, adding that both parents and children of the school are offered drugs on a regular basis. “The problem is the Park West centre. As the CPF we are planning to run a name-andshame campaign, where we will photograph those buying drugs and then post it on our website,” Brace said. He said the situation has improved some-

PHOTO: LEON STEENKAMP what since the Complex Patrols security company has been appointed to guard the centre since the beginning of this month. “The feedback that we receive is that it is going better but there are still drug dealers around that have levelled threats at the security guards,” said Lt Elizabeth Munro, spokesperson for Table View police. She confirmed that reports of passers-by being offered drugs have been reported to
the police. “Most of our drug related arrests occur in this area. The problem is that the dealers don’t have the drugs on them but hide it nearby and collect it when the sale is made. We have however held joint operations where dealers are observed and they have been arrested.” Headmaster Gary Jonsson of the CBC St John’s which is situated across the road
from the Park West centre, says they are fully aware of the situation. “The safety of our children is paramount. We have regular meetings with SAPS and are also kept up to date of the situation through the police’s school forum. The situation is monitored on a daily basis. “We are doing our level best to keep our children away from these individuals,” Jonsson said.

The Orange Couch will now be in the format of a mini-online programme series with interviews, and performances, all neatly packaged in an awesome new design. The online feature will still go live on www.tygerburger.co.za every Wednesday, along with a feature on the artist, which will also appear on TygerBurger’s Arts and Entertainment pages. Twelve Eleven Productions have come on board and will be helping with the filming and production. The Orange Couch started in 2012, as a way for readers to experience the music of the performers featured in the paper and to generate content and traffic for the TygerBurger website. The idea was hugely popular and quickly

Dan is ek gefrustreerd, omdat ek nog moet lê, want dis 03:00 in die oggend, maar ek wil aan die gang kom,” verduidelik sy met ’n glimlag. ’n Vinnige toer deur haar huis laat mens verstom oor die kreatiwiteit wat deur haar are bruis. Elke skepping verbaas jou, want wat dit op die oog af na lyk is inderdaad iets heeltemal anders. Geroeste metaalomhulsels wat die ingange in haar huis versier en twee lewensgrootte maskers, wat aan weerskante van die televisiekabinet hang, is beslis aanskoulik. Dit is egter eers wanneer Zaresa verduidelik dat die skeppings eintlik van bouersrubber en plastiese karton gemaak is, dat mens nuwe waardering kry vir haar kreatiewe visie en vernuf.

Residents angry at metro cops’ snub LEON STEENKAMP Residents attending a recent open meeting of the Table View Ratepayers’ Association were fuming after the scheduled speaker from the city’s metro police did not show up. Anne Marie Jordaan, executive committee member of the Table View Ratepayers’ Association (TVRA) says she requested the presence of a metro police representative at one of their opening meetings in October last year already. The request was made to Superintendent Alan Davies, who heads up the northern area (Region 2) in the Atlantis head office. “Due to the upcoming festive season, instead of having him at our November or December meeting, we decided to postpone his talk until our March open meeting this year,” Jordaan says. Jordaan adds that everything was on track when she went overseas during January and February. “The discussions were followed up by Mike Channing (chairman) and Lesley O’Brien (secretary) of TVRA.” A request by metro police to send them a list of issues that will be discussed at the meeting was also adhere to by the TVRA. “These questions were sent to them on 15 February and they only responded 1 March after 15:00, which included an apology that they will not be attending the meeting,” Jordaan says. The office at the West Coast Family Church which is used to conduct most of the TVRA business, closes on Fridays at 13:00. “This resulted in the email only being read on Monday 4 March – and the meeting was that night. Either way, even the Friday at 15:00 is still out of order to cancel.”
According to her the reason metro police gave for not attending was that the questions related to issues like the traffic congestion, taxis and vagrancy. “They said these are questions that Traffic and Law Enforcement should answer which is quite missing the point of the gettogether. Our questions were only a guideline as we as the TVRA facilitate question and answer sessions at every meeting as there are normally many questions which come from the floor. The TVRA open meetings are not about us as an executive committee but about getting the right speaker to address important issues through direct contact with the community,” Jordaan explains. Most of the 70 attendees at the meeting were “furious and expressed their feelings quite heatedly” Jordaan says. “It’s disgusting! Why do we pay rates and taxes to be treated like this?” one individual asked. Another wanted communication from the mayor in this regard. “Ultimately, the TVRA ExCo wishes to express its extreme disappointment in the non-attendance of any representative from the metro police,” Jordaan says. Ward councillors Heather Brenner, Joy McCarthy and Marissa Jansen van Vuuren also attended the meeting. Brenner who is also chairperson of the Subcouncil Blaauwberg said that she will be following up with metro police as well. Richard Bosman, executive director: Safety and Security confirmed this. “Metro police established that the issues troubling the residents are best tackled by the City’s Traffic and Law Enforcement Services. The City has liaised with Councillor Heather Brenner, ward councillor...”

A wreck reduction process this week will aim to weaken the last two remaining pieces of wreckage of the Seli 1, which will allow it to sink to the oceanbed. Since the stranding, the vessel has posed several risks as evident from the oil slicks experienced, the contamination of marine life and the pollution of the shoreline. The presence of the vessel has also resulted in the altering of the Table Bay coastline by means of accretion and erosion. The vessel also poses a risk to recreational beach users, especially kite surfers. The Joint Task Team is pleased that the South African Navy will commence the wreck reduction process before the coming winter. “It is extremely significant that this process will be commencing before the winter period, which in all likelihood would result in further breakup of the vessel, increased oil spills and oil contamination. In addition, the sea conditions during winter are such that the operation would not be viable,” said
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security. As of Monday the public are required to adhere to the following safety measures: V The entire beach and dune area opposite the wreck will be closed to the public and demarcated parking areas will also be offlimits; V Recreational activities are not permitted; V An area of approximately 1 000 m surrounding the wreck will be off-limits to all vessels and water users during the operation. Active policing of the off-limits area will be in force by various law enforcement agencies; and V The airspace surrounding the wreck is prohibited and no aircraft are allowed to operate. Updates on the wreck reduction will be issued.

This week will see the funeral of the Seli 1. A wreck reduction process in respect of the cargo vessel stranded along the Table View coast, is set to commence during this week. The South African Navy, who have recently carried out an investigation and survey of the wreck, have been enlisted by the Department of Transport to undertake the operation subject to favourable weather conditions. Assistance in the form of resources and manpower will be provided by the City of Cape Town, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) and the Department of Environmental Affairs. The wreck reduction, planned and undertaken through a multi-agency task team, is intended to strategically weaken the wreck structure and, with the help of the ocean forces, collapse it onto the seabed. Remedial and protective measures are being put in place by the joint task team to manage and mitigate the release of any oils or pollutants, and the impact of this on the coastline and marine life. All risks with regards to oil pollution and the sensitive marine environment have been considered. Standby teams to respond to any oil pollution or oiling of seabirds will be in place, and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) and the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town have been engaged as part of the process. The complete collapsing of the wreck in this manner and the release of remaining pollutants under controlled conditions will likely remove all remaining negative impacts of the Seli 1 on the coastline. Subsequent to the operation, however, an assessment will be undertaken to determine if any further work is required. On 7 September 2009 the Seli 1 experienced engine problems and sought refuge in Table Bay. A snapped anchor chain compounded with reduced engine power and stormy weather conditions culminated in

Wow, smashing pumpkin Some 20 South African pumpkin experts will compete for the title of Giant Pumpkin Champion in the Shoprite and Checkers Giant Pumpkin competition to be held at Diemersdal Wine Estate on 16 March at the Durbanville Farm Festival. Well-known local artist, Rooies, will be master of ceremony for the event. Henri du Plessis from Worcester currently holds the South African record for giant pumpkins with his massive 390 kg pumpkin that also earned him the title of 2012 Shoprite Checkers Giant Pumpkin Champ. In August 2012, pumpkin growers acquired giant pumpkin seeds from Freshmark with which to enter the 2013 Giant Pumpkin competition. Pumpkin growers can enter the competition with pumpkins grown from any seeds,
but the seeds provided by Freshmark are special in that they are not genetically modified in any way, and originate from giant pumpkins from the North American Dill’s Atlantic Giant variety weighing between 150 and 300 kg. The enormous pumpkins – that are transported with great care in bakkies and trucks from across the country – will be carefully weighed in from 09:30. The winner will walk away with R10 000, while the second and third place winners will receive cash prizes of R5 000 and R2 000 respectively. There are also prizes for the prettiest, most unique or most unusual looking pumpkin! Pumpkin fritters and pancakes will be for sale, as well as jumping castles and face-painting for the little ones.
Winter drive collection for the needy living in Du Noon The public is asked to donate any food, clothing or other items of use for the needy during an upcoming winter drive. Local resident Nicole Picksley is heading up the drive that is in aid of those living in Du Noon as well as the animals in shelters. “Those living in shacks all dread winter’s rain and the cold. Please open your hearts and give warmth to those
who need it,” Picksley says. Donations in the form of blankets, food/tins, shoes, jackets, anything unwanted or handy, will be gladly accepted. Baby items and clothes, books and toys are also always needed. The church in Du Noon will distribute these items. Donations for the animal shelters also welcome. Children targets in Parklands LEON STEENKAMP A resident is worried about the increase in crime after being witness to two attacks on children outside her Parklands home in the last two weeks. Megan Siebert who stays in Bournemouth Bend says the mugging of school children in the vicinity seems to be a regular occurrence. “Last week a girl’s cellphone was forcefully taken from her as she was walking to a job interview. “A week before that a boy from CBC St John’s was chased by a young man with scissors after he told him not to harass the little kids. He was listening to music on his cellphone in his jacket pocket with headphones and ran into our driveway for help as we were on our way to school,” Siebert said. “Both these incidents happened on a Wednesday which is also garbage collection day,” she added. These incidents were confirmed by Ryno Roberts, chairperson of the Table View Neighbourhood Watch. “Last year we had a couple of these incidents. Currently I won’t say it is a weekly thing. These crimes are committed by opportunists, vagrants who think they can
make a quick buck. It is not the work of your hardened criminals,” Roberts said. “We always warn everybody and especially children to keep their cellphones in their pockets and out of the public eye.” Lt Elizabeth Munro, spokesperson for Table View police, confirms that cellphone usage on the streets specifically by children is a problem. “Children are soft targets, and criminals know they won’t fight back. We issue regular warnings at our school forum meetings and have distributed pamphlets at the MyCiTi bus stops. The children have earphones in their ears. We have had incidents where a car pulls up, a suspect jumps out, grabs the phone from a victim’s hand, and they then speed off,” Munro said. She said the visibility of a cellphone in someone’s hands makes them an easy potential victim. “Criminals do not have to go to too much trouble to steal. “It is definitely a crime of opportunity and offers an easy target for those who are looking for something to sell for drug money,” she said. She once again warned children to be alert when walking in the street and waiting at bus stops and to not use their cellphones in clear sight.
City condemns MyCiTi stone-throwing Local police are investigating an incident of malicious damage to property after a stone was hurled at a MyCiTi bus. The incident happened on Thursday afternoon along Blaauwberg Road opposite Boy de Goede Circle. One passenger sustained minor head injuries. “The City of Cape Town condemns this criminal act, and calls on anyone with information on the incident to come forward,” said Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater. “The city will not tolerate any acts of
criminality which puts the lives of its staff or its passengers at risk. All passengers have the right to travel safely between their places of work and home.” The incident has been reported to the Table View police and is now the subject of a criminal investigation. According to Lt Elizabeth Munro they have a lead in the case. “The suspect is known to the investigating officer, and an arrest is expected soon,” she said. A well-known radio presenter is pulling out all the stops to ensure that Table View and surrounds gets its very own community radio station. Ian Ward, formerly a DJ on Radio GoodHope, is convinced that Table View will not only benefit but also needs a local radio station. “The station will be called OneFM as we are looking to bring the community together as one through radio,” Ian says. OneFM will be part of the Blouberg Development Foundation (BDF), a non-government organisation that Ian is in the process of registering. The set-up process and managing of the radio station will be done through the BDF. “The reason for the establishment of the BDF is that it a requirement by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) and also, if OneFM makes money we want to put that into skills development programmes for the community, like computer training programmes for impoverished children, for instance,” Ian explained. OneFM will broadcast to Table View, Du Noon, Bloubergstrand, Bloubergrise, Parklands, Sunningdale, Flamingo Vlei, Sunset Links, Montague Gardens, Woodbridge Island, Milnerton, Tygerhof, Milnerton Ridge, Royal Ascot, Joe Slovo, Phoenix, Summer Greens, Richwood, Edgemead and Bothasig. “We did several tests in terms of the signal range. Another requirement of Icasa is that a new signal must not interfere with that of an existing radio station,” Ian said. According to him there is a number of
ways the community can support the initiative. “We need to prove three things to Icasa, that the community wants a radio station, that the community needs a radio station and that the station will be able to sustain itself.” Ian is busy drumming up support for the station by collecting signatures on the streets and at shopping centres; asking for people to like the OneFM Facebook page. “If we can get 5 000 likes on our page it will prove beyond a reasonable doubt that people support the idea. We will also be gathering support through online petitions and letters of support from various roleplayers in the community like churches and NGOs. “The community needs a radio station. This is evident by the crime situation in the area. The work being done by current NGOs can also benefit as the station can highlight their causes and needs. A radio station will also help to educate and uplift people and help integrate the different cultures and communities in the broadcast area. If you take the fires we had in Du Noon over New Year. No one knew about it, until it appeared in the newspaper. A radio station can play a crucial role in situations like that,” Ian explains. Regarding funding, Ian says donations are needed to start up the station. “Any donation – once off or monthly – will be tax deductible. No clarity yet on recent UFO sightings Since early January this year there have been quite a few UFO sightings over the Cape peninsula. TygerBurger was notified by quite a few people from the northern suburbs who swear they’ve witnessed these “moving lights” over our night skies. Our “witnesses” all seem to be above board: no hippies or airy-fairies. After our first story, we were inundated with several other people coming forward, even sending us pictures of what they had witnessed. And “unidentified flying objects” they still seem to be! We’ve spoken to local scientists and amateur and professional astronomers alike, but there seems to be no logical explanation. None at all. Although they all seem to know about the sightings, several solutions to this mysterious problem have been entertained – without any success. So what is it then? Are we being watched by inhabitants from a distant planet? If so, why? Can we expect an invasion soon? Or is the tourism board’s publicity campaign finally paying off? The debate on whether we are the only life in the universe has been going on forever. It doesn’t matter on which side of the fence you are, it still interests everyone, because “what if”? Some say it’s arrogant to think that earth carries the only intelligent life in all of the huge, ever-expanding universe. Others simply believe we’re not alone, whether the aliens mean well or not. The rest will wait for proof before deciding!

It’s not Microsoft that’s phoning you For the past few weeks we have been receiving calls on both our landlines asking us to check out our computer management. “Your computer sends out error reports and we are calling from Microsoft to clear out the error reports”. They then ask for remote access to your computer! Alarm bells? Yes! Naturally we declined and asked for contact details. They gave us this number 0017602831718. So whilst my husband was chatting to “Microsoft” I called from the other line and the phone was answered. Possibly enough to reassure the less stressed. However, it’s a bogus call centre that answers as Microsoft (apparently they change the number and are thus hard to trace). We called Microsoft and they said that categorically they would never call you. Apparently they put a reader on your computer allowing them access to your passwords. What’s worrying is that they are very convincing. However, being security conscious, as our family is, whenever we have questioned them, they simply hang up. LESLEY MILES West Beach
Motorport was friendly & efficient We recently planned a family holiday to Cape Town in our Polo. Some 70 km after Richmond we collided with a guinea fowl, which damaged the left front light. We contacted Motorport VW in Table View to find out the availability of a light for the Polo. Then a plastic corner plate came off a truck and damage our car’s bumper. We spoke to Bevan Napier at Motorport VW. What a pleasant person. He gave us moral support and the directions to their garage. The manner in which he supported us was so excellent. Telkom scam was an ‘inside job for sure’ I have been having a problem with our Telkom landline and reported it this week. The following day a man appeared at our gate and said he had been sent by Telkom and they needed him to cut down the tree tops that were brushing against our telephone line as this was causing the problem. I gave him access to our property to discuss which trees needed cutting down as clearly he was responding to our “fault complaint”. Whilst in our house he asked to use the toilet and on his way out stole money from my purse. Clearly this was a scam but also clearly Telkom personnel were involved as he knew we had reported a fault. If you haven’t entered this year’s SPCA Purina Woefie Wandel, now is the time! The Woefie Wandel, of which TygerBurger and People’s Post are the media sponsors, is held at D’Aria Wine Estate in Durbanville on Sunday 24 March. Walkers and their dogs will embark on a four kilometre scenic circular route through vineyards. In 2012, more than 1 524 humans and 1 079 dogs took part in the walk. Before and after the walk, participants and their dogs can relax and socialise at the winery, enjoying wine-tasting, eats and treats. Fun give-aways, lucky draws, competitions, jumping castles and icecream will keep the children happy. Actress and Pasella presenter, Vicky Davis, master of ceremonies, says: “I cannot imagine my life without pets, and my dogs bring so much love and enjoyment to my life. The Woefie Wandel is a great opportunity for owners to spend time with their beloved canine friends and at the same time, funds are raised to help the CoGH SPCA in their fight against animal cruelty.” Entrants are urged to wear proper walking shoes. “Owners with short-nose breeds (i.e. bulldogs and pugs) and those with older dogs with joint problems, are cautioned to consult their vet before taking part in the walk. Puppies under four months are not permitted to take part,” said CoGH SPCA events co-ordinator, Juan August. Owners of large breed dogs of 18 months or younger should walk a shorter distance, as extended walking can put pressure on delicate skeletal structures. Entry forms are available at local veterinarians (see www.spca-ct.co.za for further details). Entrants who enter by email, fax, post or online at www.spca-ct.co.za before Friday 22 March at 17:00 will qualify for a discounted entry fee of R35 per person, R25 per dog and no cost for children in prams. Dreams are coming alive LOUISA STEYL Local rockers, MacStanley, have just released their latest album, Lucid, Alive and Dreaming. This is the third album for the band, formerly known as Flat Stanley in South Africa, and their first local release as MacStanley. “I think with the name change in a South African context, we’ve been extremely lucky,” says front man and vocalist, Andy Mac. He explains that news of the band’s foray into the European music scene, and their subsequent name change for the international market, spread quickly and local fans quickly grew comfortable with it. Andy says the new album very much carries the same thread as the Flat Stanley albums before, but rhythm guitarist, Clinton Gahwiler, points out that this one is a little harder and edgier than what they’ve done before now. “It’s definitely a fuller production,” guitarist Neil Potgieter says. While it’s been five years since their last
release, MacStanley have been far from idle. After releasing Between two Worlds in 2007, they toured with big names like Collective Soul, Metallica and Counting Crows. With five singles, the album won them a SAMA nomination and saw them sign their European album deal. They released the album overseas, before starting with the new album in 2011. “It started as about 40 songs,” Clinton says. “We were extremely indulgent with this album,” Andy admits. Lucid, Alive and Dreaming was recorded at Digital Forest Studios and mixed by Neal Snyman before mastering at Sterling Sound in New York. It was released locally by Sheer Sound. Niel says the most exciting thing about the local industry at the moment is the improvement in recording. “Our studios have stepped up.” For more information about MacStanley, visit their website www.macstanley.com. nie May ‘n album, Bonnie en Clyde, opgeneem, wat verlede jaar ná net drie weke platinum-status behaal het. Jay se debuut-solo-album, Solo, het reeds platinumstatus verbygesteek en is bekroon met twee Huisgenoot-Tempo-toekennings, asook twee SAMAnominasies. Enduro sailors rig boats for MAC24 Teams of endurance sailors are fine-tuning their dinghies for this year’s Liquid Blast 24-Hour challenge. This unique endurance sailing event which is hosted annually by Milnerton Aquatic Club (Mac), will boast eight dinghy classes and 30 teams comprising eight sailors per team. They will sail non-stop from 12:00 on Saturday 16 March and finish at noon the next day, sailing right through the night. The teams will use a relay format and rotate their crews – normally two per boat every two hours. Enterprise, GP14, Bosun, Mirror, Sonnet, 420, Saldanha and Pico dinghy classes will be competing. This is a colourful and spectacular sailing event at Rietvlei within the Table Bay Nature Reserve, in Table View, with Table Mountain as a backdrop. Spectators are welcome and there is no entry fee.
Refreshments will be available throughout the 24 hours and there will be on-shore entertainment for the children. Best viewing is at the “change-over beach” where crews swap, normally every two hours. Some boats have very smooth change-overs while others capsize or leave crews stranded on the shore or in the water, much to the very vocal crowd’s delight, mainly from opposing teams. This happens right next to the shoreline. This is the perfect opportunity to see and chat to the sailors getting ready to go on the water. Mac has become the “Home of South African Endurance Sailing” with the 24 Hour, 12 Hour and 4 Hour events now firmly entrenched on their sailing calendar. The Mac 24 Hr challenge was started in 1998. preview of what can be expected during the Cape Town Motocross National over the Easter weekend, can be seen at the Melkbos 4x4 track this weekend when the local Cape Town Motocross Club Championship takes place. Both of Cape Town’s SA National champions for 2012, Anthony Raynard (MX2) and Justin Sangster (50 cc Pro Senior), will be part of the action. Raynard, fresh from international racing in Dubai, will be challenged by Marc Baxter from Port Elizabeth in the 450 cc class. In the Pro-mini class 150 cc bikes, Bevin Potgieter (PE) and Marcus Phelps (Johannesburg) will go bar to bar. Phelps came second in the European Red Bull series in Britain last year but was beaten into fourth place in Johannesburg last month. Local boy Brad Sullivan will have his work cut out for him with these two aggressive riders.
