House robberies up LEON STEENKAMP

The Table View Police are facing a spate of house robberies that seem to be escalating in frequency. The incidents of this type of crime, where intruders confront the occupants of a residence during a housebreaking, are up by 300 percent from the same time last year. “Last year we had four such incidents and this year for this last period we have had 16,” said Table View station Commander Colonel Dirk Vosloo. At this stage it is Parklands in the Sector 2 policing quadrant that is being mostly targeted. “It is not, however, grouped in a specific area in Parklands,” Vosloo added. He says they have looked at the facts of each incident to see whether there are certain trends and similarities. “At this stage we are looking for an old shape white Opel Corsa Elegance with four black, male occupants. They can help us with the investigation into two cases,” he said. Vosloo reiterated the fact that the police desperately need the help of the public to effectively combat crime. “People don’t realise that these things are happening in our area. For a woman to jump from a first-storey window shows just how traumatic such an experience can be,” he said in reference to two house robberies that took place last Tuesday – one in broad daylight where a woman escaped from her home after being robbed, tied up and locked in her bedroom (story on page 2). Vosloo asked the public to be alert for suspicious vehicles and individuals scouting possible targets in the neighbourhood. “People must ensure that their windows, doors and security gates are closed and locked even if they do stay a couple of storeys up. They should install decent burglar bars and always be alert. Incidents like getting out of the car in the driveway and then leaving the garage door open while you run inside to get something you forgot, should also be prevented,” he said. Vosloo also said residents must familiarise themselves with the contact number of the police vehicle patrolling their specific sector to ensure prompt response. He also urged people to become involved with the Table View Neighbourhood Watch which is doing good work in aiding the police by being their eyes and ears. Anyone with information regarding any of the recent house robbery cases or who would like to get involved with the Table View Neighbourhood Watch is asked to contact the Table View Police Station on 021 521 3300.

Reinette Troskie (55) was taking a break from her housekeeping duties last Tuesday morning at 10:30 when a man nonchalantly walked into her duplex at Le Chalet, Avonlea Close, Parklands. “The security gate was locked. I heard someone fiddle with it but thought it might be my husband,” Troskie said from her hospital bed on Friday morning. Although the front door was closed it was not locked. The robber calmly entered her home and told Troskie who was seated on the couch to keep quiet and that he had a revolver on him. “He was very calm and talked to me softly. He said he is looking for dollars and that I mustn’t make him angry,” she says of the black man dressed in jeans, sharp point shoes, a neat T-shirt and tracksuit top. “I was so blown away I only realised later that here is trouble brewing. I just hoped that he would not rape me.”

The robber at first asked for a drink of water. “I gave him some water. He drank it, carefully wiped the glass clean of his fingerprints and then put on gloves.” Throughout the incident the man remained very polite and civil. “I was in a terrible state. He sat down next to me on the couch, took my hand and told me not to cry. ‘Don’t worry, you can buy another one,’ he told me as he took my wedding ring off my finger,” Troskie recounts. The man then escorted her up to the bedroom where he raided the cupboards, putting some of her husband’s clothes and other valuables in a bag. They went back downstairs where he loaded her laptop, cellphones and other items as well. During the incident she heard him speak to someone, presumably an accomplice. “I heard him tell the person to wait.” The robber then took her back upstairs. “He asked me if I had any rope and when I said no, he used one of my husband’s socks to tie my hands. “He then told me that he is going downstairs to make himself something to eat. He locked the doors of the bedroom and our en-

suite bathroom,” Troskie recalls. The man shortly returned and told her that he had trouble opening the front door. “I seems he used the wrong key and it broke off in the lock. “I told him that he could get out through the back door. She sat on the bed terrified, listening for noises from downstairs. “I looked through the window and saw that the back door was standing open. I was afraid that the other man he was talking to, might return and decided to climb through the window and jump out.” The fall saw her shatter her left ankle. “I tried to get up to walk to a neighbour who I knew was at home during the day, looking after her grandchildren, but I immediately fell down again. I crawled to her front door and told her to phone the police,” Troskie says. In the process of jumping from the window she also obliterated their washing line. “My husband told me that afterwards, I didn’t even register it at the time.” When police arrived on the scene Troskie and her husband where both too traumatised to immediately give a statement. No suspects have yet been arrested.

Two young women were rescued from sexual exploitation last week Tuesday when Cape Town’s Vice Squad arrested a man for human trafficking in Brooklyn. During the arrest, an undisclosed sum of cash was also seized. A second suspect is currently being sought as a result of the arrest. The 23 and 19-year-old victims were allegedly held against their will by a Nigerian national, according to spokesperson for Specialised Law Enforcement Services, Assistant Chief Nathan Ladegourdie. He elaborates: “The women who are originally from Johannesburg, had been trafficked to Cape Town and were held at the residence in Brooklyn against their will. They were also forced by their captors to take drugs, which included dagga and rocks (crack).” He continues by saying that the conditions inside the house were unhygienic, that the women were provided with no food and that all the monies they made were taken by their captors on a daily basis. The Vice Squad has in the meantime placed the two women in a place of safety pending further investigation of the matter, which has now been handed over to the Hawks’ Human Trafficking Task Team.

The accused appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping, assault, along with being charged under the Sexual Offences Act. “The Vice Squad will continue to ensure that this kind of activity is brought to an abrupt end and communities are encouraged to let the authorities know whenever they suspect something illegal might be going on. These operations are made a top priority whenever they are brought to our attention,” concludes Ladegourdie. Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, applauds the members of the public who have come forward with information and have given the Vice Squad a chance to curb this crime. “Human trafficking isn’t a growing problem, but the fact that something like this can even exist is awful,” he says. Smith adds that law enforcers uncover many of these trafficking dens themselves, often by trawling through the internet and looking for suspicious advertisements, but that tip-offs from the public are just as vital. One can give information, stay completely anonymous and never testify in court, so there is no reason to avoid disclosure. Human trafficking, which he describes as “insidious” is lying particularly close to Smith’s heart, especially after hearing about a girl aged 13 who was sold by her parents for R6 500 and forced to have sex with older

men. The industry would, of course, not exist if there wasn’t a demand for it. As a result, affluent men could expose all their loved ones to sexually transmitted diseases. Smith told TygerBurger there are various ways for the captor to control the victim, as he explains: “The victim can become addicted to a substance which the captor provides, sometimes they feel indebted to the captor, then the threat of harm coming to their families is another method of control. The captor can also be in possession of the victims’ identity documents, which means they cannot travel.” According to him the victims are often from poorer areas in South Africa and could, as an example, have been lured to Cape Town under the false pretences of a job as a secretary. Smith concludes ominously by mentioning that the pro-constitutional group lobbying for the decriminalisation of prostitution will further impact on the already limited control law enforcers have in the fight against human trafficking. “We cannot regulate the industry. Firstly, it has not worked in other countries, and secondly, we do not have the resources to control it. “The illegal activities will undoubtedly intensify if it (decriminalisation) ever materialises.”

Kolgansies laat vrou skarrel JANA BEKKER EN TAMSYN COERECIUS

Niks is toe gesteel nie.

Wat is my huidige situasie? . Wat wil ek verander? . Hoe gaan ek dit doen? . Oor watter vaardighede beskik ek?

. Dr. S.T. Potgieter, 021 949 5007 of st@pitkos.co.za.

onderneming Njabula Speelgoed – ’n baie geskikte naam want Njabula beteken geskenk. Sy jongste ontwerpe sluit selfs ’n Toyota-dubbelkajuit in.

Road closure due to MyCiTi construction work Table View residents are advised that the median at the intersection of Blaauwberg Road and Donkin Avenue will be closed from Monday 9 July at 08:00 until further notice, in order to facilitate the construction of MyCiTi bus lanes in this area. Residents will only be able to turn left into, and out of, Donkin Avenue for the duration

of this closure, and are advised to use Raats Drive and Jansens Avenue as alternative routes. Due to this construction, buses will now merge with traffic in Blaauwberg Road slightly sooner than they normally would. This will be accommodated by removing some of the existing delineator kerbs.

Musiekaand help kankerlyers Die Fellows for Cancer het Saterdagaand ’n musiekaand in Melkbos strand aangebied. Find a lift to share and cut travel expenses In the light of rising fuel prices and the overall cost of motoring it is not often that you hear of a practical solution that puts money back into the commuter’s pocket. Findalift.co.za has been doing this since 2009 by providing an online journey-matching platform, and it’s absolutely free to the public. It is built around the concept of ridesharing, which is when two or more people share a car and travel together for all or part of the journey, also known as carpooling or a lift club. Sharing a modest journey of 25km to work and back could save one approximately R7 400 annually, if you share this journey with one other person. For a calculation of estimated individual savings Findalift has developed an online savings calculator. Findalift.co.za is a public initiative and provides an online journey-matching platform, absolutely free to the public. It matches those seeking and those offering lifts and puts them in secure contact so they can decide to make contact and arrange to share their journey. The platform shows members who travel their way, so they can decide to make secure contact and arrange to share the journey, helping commuters make better use of the empty seats in their cars while saving money and the environment. Findalift.co.za has welcomed over 2 000

members in the northern suburbs (5 000 members nationally) since a slow start in 2009. This website allows people to quickly find others travelling their way so they can decide to share the journey. To become part of Findalift, you simply need to register your details, confirm the start location and desired destination on the map and add their journey details. Then simply click on the “search for matches” button and matches will be displayed instantly. Once you’ve decided on a suitable match you can make secure contact through the website and send a “request to share”. Your “request to share” can then be accepted and journey sharing begins. Charmaine Garcia, client relations manager at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, describes Findalift as a brilliant service provided by Findalift’s very efficient and on-the-ball team! “Particularly since green issues are hot topics nowadays as well as the fact that flexibility is unique to each individual I believe this value and unique service brings about an opportunity for all to incorporate flexibility in their lives,” she says of this online service. For more information on the service or to get started with your lift search visit the website www.findalift.co.za or phone 079 774 9174.

SLICE OF LIFE

Take hands off your cellphone Many people probably had to dig into drawers, cupboards and cellphone boxes to find their hands-free cellphone kits, following the new by-law that came into effect at the start of this month. This is one accompaniment you don’t want to be caught without, because not only will it cost you R500, your phone will be confiscated too. The new by-law forms part of the provincial road safety campaign to cut road deaths in half by 2014 which is good news for everyone. This law is one every road user will benefit from, if, of course, it can be enforced consistently. Not only will not holding a cellphone to your ear channel your attention to the road – where it should be – it will ensure you use both hands to drive. Despite the positives that come with the new law, many feel to confiscate one’s phone for 24 hours is taking it a bit far. For the city to take such drastic measures the intensity of the problem must have been great. The law is not difficult to obey. It is merely a case of coming into the habit of plugging in the hands-free when you climb into your car. Before we all know it the time when we were all driving without a hands-free will be a mere distant memory.

So vertel hy. Dié huis staan toevallig leeg en dit maak sy storie so effens geloofwaardig. Ek het egter my bedenkinge gehad omdat hy vra ons moet hom R200 leen.

dadig beroof is. Hy simpatiseer en verseker my hy gaan my vertroue in my medemens herstel. Ek was Woensdag 13 Junie omstreeks 14:45 by Fruit & Veg in Willowbridge. Sy was redelik jonk

ANON E-pos

Frustrated over stray dogs Stray dogs have become a big problem in the northern suburbs. Owners don’t “fix” their dogs and as a result, they attract all stray dogs. I have had this problem with the neighbour’s dog across the road. For a week, I have seen stray dogs wanting to get into their yard. They bark, fight and

attract more dogs. I have tried to contact law enforcement, SPCA and Animal Cruelty on several occasions and no one bothered to give a helping hand. I have to run around and try to catch these dogs ... How are we going to combat this problem if no one gives a damn? MARCO CHARLES Parow Valley

Last Friday we became part of the “I have been burgled group of Durbanville”. Among the stolen items was a one-of-a-kind backpack (Deuter 40+ Guide Pack in lime green and grey), a friend brought into the country for me from the UK. My backpack is always packed and ready for the next client so I lost more than just a backpack. I lost specialised equipment that was sourced over many months such as my compass, maps, First Ascent down jacket, digital camera, etc. I earn my living as a mountain walking guide (taking local and overseas people on hikes and trails in our beautiful surrounding mountains). This is making a big negative impact on my business, because I now have to use an old worn-out back pack and a pair of old hiking boots with worn soles. Treasures await you in countryside JILL PEPER

If you are reading this article, the chances are that you live in the Tygerberg area and you have not gone away for the school holidays! Fortunately for you, you are lucky enough to live on the doorstep of some really beautiful Cape countryside, which can offer you interesting day visits and farm stay-overs, without the expense of having to travel far to enjoy them. Cape Country Calls invites you to visit some of the interesting businesses and attractions in the farmlands between Durbanville, Malmesbury, Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Here you will find a wide variety of country businesses, ranging from crafts, collector’s items, children’s activities, animal attractions and garden centres to farm cottages, restaurants, function venues, wine tasting and sales, farm delis, and picnic sites. An attractive illustrative map of the country roads where these places can be found is available at the Cape Town tourism offices in Willowbridge, Berg Street (Cape Town), Canal Walk and Blouberg as well as at various venues, and on request through the Cape

Country Calls website. A treasure hunt competition is being run by Cape Country Calls, and all the venues mentioned on the map and website for the Cape Country area, are participating. At each place that is visited, look for the laminated copy of the green Cape Country Calls map up on the wall and answer the question on it regarding the venue that you are at. SMS your answer through together with the number that represents the relevant venue on the map. Each answer sent through qualifies you to be entered into a monthly draw which involves prizes from these various country businesses (eg. restaurant vouchers, gift vouchers, farm accommodation or free entrance tickets). The treasure hunt will continue until the end of December, with a draw taking place monthly until then. For more information, visit www.capecountrycalls.co.za or call 084 575 5525. Copies of the map are available on request through the website, as well as from the advertisers listed there and from Cape Town Tourism offices. Slow the pace down these holidays. Drive the farm roads, and take time to call in on your country cousins!

Here be treasure.

Need somebuddy to lean on?

Stars line up to shine at concert

CARINA ROUX

We all sometimes need a shoulder to lean on. Someone with a receptive ear who can take your hand when your view becomes emotionally obscured. Especially if you encounter an obstacle like the big C on life’s journey. A “dose of Nick when needed” was not among the list of doctors’ prescriptions recently diagnosed cancer patient John Smith received. His wife Tracey says they didn’t know how to cope with the news. “Having no family members to speak to, I didn’t know whether I was saying the right things when he got depressed. I was praying about it, and saying to the Lord please help me, that He could send someone to help John with the depression.” Father of three, Nick van Rensburg was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2009. Already in an advanced stage it subsequently spread to his liver. After numerous operations he is currently in remission, but still on preventative chemo-tablets. In response to an SMS request from Linda Greeff, co-founder of People Living With Cancer (PLWC), Nick contacted John who was struggling to come to terms with his diagnosis of colorectal cancer. “I have lived with a similar diagnosis for three years now, I can give that type of support. I am a Christian, and prayed about what God would want me to do with my life, and this to me was an answer.” “Cancer unifies people,” says Linda, as the friendship between Irishman Martin Connoly (68) and Thabo Rini (33) from Mfuleni, proves. Martin, who recently heard that he is in remission from rectal cancer was elated when asked to be a cancer buddy. “If I could be there

Photo: Carina Roux for anyone that’s going through the same sort of trauma that I went through when first diagnosed and spare them a little bit of that, then I felt that I was doing something worthwhile.” Thabo had the same sort of questions he once had – what’s going to happen, how’s it going to affect me, what can I do to help? Martin’s been able to assist Thabo with the practical side of things. The challenge with Thabo was that he was in such a poor state in the beginning. “I had to try and keep pulling myself away from feeling pity for him, and just give him the moral support, give him positive messages all the time and just be there for him.” PLWC, one of the beneficiaries of this year’s

’Cause we Can! concert, originated out of a cancer survivors’ “celebration of life” event in 2000. Linda, who survived ovarian cancer heard others expressing the need to give something back. One of them was co-founder Carl Liebenberg who recalled how desperate he was to find someone who had gone through the same experience when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. “We are still quite a small organisation, but a powerful one as we are survivor-driven,” says Linda. “We did not have a choice about getting cancer, but now that we are part of this club, we are trying to make the best of it.” . Vos aims for litterbugs James Vos, chairperson of Subcouncil 3 says it has become a great concern for councillors to deal with this issue. “I believe that the individuals who perpetrate these acts are defiling suburban neighbourhoods and taking away the citizens’ constitutional right of living in a clean and healthy society.” He says it is ratepayers’ money that is used for municipal teams to regularly clean and maintain the areas, in the best interests of the community, yet some lawless and callous individuals persist in littering and dumping. “These selfish acts are unacceptable in a civilised society, lead to environmental and

societal degradation, increase health risks, and encourage crime, he says. “This undermines the efforts of council, and destroys the appearance of our suburbs and, in many instances, is totally unnecessary.” The penalties for dumping include fines ranging from R500 to R2 500. “The reality is that these fines are not a deterrent for littering or dumping and it also does not produce an effect of discouragement for performing such polluting deeds,” says Vos. He says it was discovered that people litter for various reasons. “They can’t be bothered or are too lazy to find a bin, they have no sense of pride in their community, there is a lack of education and poor parenting of young people and also there aren’t enough penalties.” Vos says he will table a motion for the attention of the safety and security portfolio committee and utilities portfolio committee so that additional and alternative penalties may be considered in the form of community service for wrongdoers who are not in a position to pay the fines. “Council must explore alternative penalties by introducing community service for transgressors in the form of cleaning parks, libraries, and other community facilities. Most countries have introduced such measures as part of the penalty system. “The fact of the matter is that if an area is heavily littered, it can lead to the ‘broken window’ effect – more litter, dumping of rubbish, graffiti, and vandalism.” Residents who witness illegal dumping can contact 0860 10 30 89 or 021 596 1999.

PlasticsSA stresses recycling TANDYLEE MARINUS

As part of their efforts to educate the public on how important it is to clean up and recycle, PlasticsSA has launched their annual clean-up and recycling schools competition. The launch comes after the competition would like to embrace the success of how pupils, co-workers and local neighbourhoods encourage one another to start recycling in areas they live and learn in. Sustainability director, Douw Steyn says it will be the sixth year in which PlasticsSA has co-ordinated the inter-schools competitions. It forms part of the Clean-Up South Africa Week which takes place from the 10 to 15 September 2012. “The aim of this inter-schools competition is to create awareness of plastics among children and educate them about the positive attributes of plastics and the responsible use and disposal thereof. As future custodians of the earth, they have the chance to make a difference in their homes, schools and environment,” Steyn says. Entries are submitted in four categories, with the involvement of organisations and schools, each adhering to specific requirements which have to be met. The aim of these categories are, so that schools and organisa-

tions are encouraged to get involved with local businesses and municipalities. Schools and communities work together in promoting action plans and events to clean up local dams, beaches and rivers. Participants have to identify and list the different types of plastics that they collected, as well as list new products that are being manufactured from the recycled material. One of the categories also takes the carbon “handprint” into consideration where the community can get directly involved. This encourages clean-up and recycling activities within the household, office and organisations. In each category, schools and organisations have to include the involvement of teachers, fellow pupils, community members, municipality, local businesses and the media in their campaigns. Thanks to the involvement of various sponsors, prizes are provided to participating schools and organisations. Each category has a 1st prize of R5000, 2nd prize of R3000 and 3rd prize of R1000 for individual winning primary or high school learners. To find out more about plastic recycling, identification and clean-ups visit the various PlasticsSA websites www.plasticsinfo.co.za; www.cleanup-sa.co.za.

Tennis ace:

Storm Elliott, a Grade 4 pupil at Elkanah House recently won the Boland Rox Tennis Championship beating all the top girl players in the Boland region in the process. The next day she competed in the ATA Masters tournament in Rondebosch. This is an annual tournament in which players have to qualify by finishing among the top eight in a series of satellite tournaments. Elliott was the only girl to qualify to take to the court in this prestigious tournament and as a result, had to play in the boys’ division. She however went on to beat all her opponents and also won the final match and the tournament.

Do It Yourself car pride of his garage JANA BEKKER

A badge with the letters CGD sits in the front of a white Jeep in Charles Dyer (60) of Kenridge’s garage. The letters are his initials and there is very good reason for this badge. The Jeep, as it stands in its complete state, was built from scratch by Charles over a period of six months. Charles has always wanted to build a car and in September 2010 the first step to make his dream come true became a reality. Getting started Charles bought a Honda TRX 250 quad bike and stripped it down, to the bare essen-

tials, as he used the engine in his jeep. First he built the frame, after putting together a model of the car on his computer. “I am a civil engineer by profession which meant I could do the structure. I used a quad bike engine as my basis and built the car in Land Rover style, because on the old Land Rover one can seal rivets,” he explains. Although he obtained police clearance, the Jeep is not roadworthy yet. “To have it declared roadworthy one has to have a diffuser.” He bought a Nissan 1200 bakkie diffuser, as the quad bike didn’t have one, Charles says.

Photos: Jana Bekker

Within six months his home-built Jeep was as good as completed. “When building a Jeep the things you think will take you five minutes to complete take a week and vice versa,” Charles says. On his computer he has a variety of photos while the Jeep was still a work in progress. There are photos of the quad bike and more photos of how it was dismantled and used as the heart of his Jeep. Only original Land Rover parts were used for the door handles and windscreen wipers. Even the seat covers Charles sewed himself, on his grandmother’s Singer sewing machine. During the process of completing the car, there were a couple of things Charles wasn’t certain about and he would spend time experimenting. For the sheeting, Charles used a type of material often used for roofing sheets and wall cladding. The indicator lights he made from perspex, by heating it up and pressing it into a mould while Golf headlights were used. Charles says according to his calculations the car will reach a speed of approximately 90km/h. He cannot wait to drive it on the road. The closest he came to that was when it was towed to Stikland recently. All that still stands between Charles, his Jeep and the open road is the roadworthy certificate, which he hopes to obtain soon. Then he will take his “baby” onto the open road and feel the wind through his hair...

‘Adopt’ a Latin American dancer A unique initiative to keep children active and off the streets has been established by a dancer.

Rest easy: Denise Cupido, a local Au Pair in Milnerton, was the lucky winner of the Cloud Nine “Win a Bed in your Pyjamas” competition held at Bedroom Boutique in Milnerton. Denise recently moved to Cape Town from George to look after Tiago Da Silva in Milnerton. She placed all her possessions in storage so her daughter could use them when she gets married. However, shortly after she moved, they discovered that the storage unit had been broken into and all Deidre’s possessions had been stolen, and she was left with nothing to pass to her recently engaged daughter. Here is Cupido with Bedroom Boutique’s Susan Bester, Werner Bester, Allie Sears and Judith Hughes.

Mighty maths:

The province’s top Grade 7 and 9 pu pils will embark on an adventure overseas on 14 July 2012, to ta ke on the rest of the world in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Mathema tics Competiti ons. This is the ninth consecuti ve year Elkanah House has facili tated this presti gious event through training, selection and support. Team Hong Kong from left to right are: Chris Aubin from Bishops; Liam Bourn from Grove Primary; Nicholas Lambrecht from Sweet Valley and St John Grimbly from Herzlia.

The adopt-a-dancer initiative is the brainchild of Jenni Beck, a mother of three and full-time estate agent. The aim, says Beck, is to raise funds to “teach children life skills through the magic of dance”. In this pilot project 40 young students will be sponsored or “adopted” by individuals or corporate funders. “The objective is to teach them Latin American dancing and create a better standard of living for children needing financial aid,” says Beck. She already has a school, Rygersdal Primary in Atlantis, but Beck wants to expand the initiative to Mitchells Plain. Already 12 dancers have been adopted through the financial support of others – some for three months, but most for a year. Donors can adopt a dancer from their homes. “One donor lives in London,” says Beck. She says dancing has helped her through hard financial times. She is the current event organiser and says the idea stems from her “passion for dance and children”. “When I was going through some serious financial difficulty two years ago, it felt as though dancing saved my life. I’m so passionate about it and I adore working with children. This is

where the inspiration for this project came from.” The event aims to raise R50 000 to create a sustainable project to support the needs of children with little or no financial aid. “We want the children to learn to dance, but also support them in other areas of their lives. Some of the children go to school without lunch or warm jerseys. How can you learn anything if you’re cold and hungry? We want to bridge the gap, inspire them and provide a structure that motivates them to learn,” says Beck. Participants supporting this initiative will receive regular updates about their chosen dancer, their progress through the programme and special invitations to upcoming concerts. “With support from the dancing community, the public and sponsors, Adopt-a-Dancer wants to replicate this initiative around the Western Cape and groom the untapped talent that has yet to be discovered.” Donations of second-hand Latin American dance shoes are welcome. To adopt a dancer, log onto the website www.adoptadancer.org, select one of the 20 boys or 20 girls (aged 12 to 13 years) you want to “adopt” and give your contribution of R50 each month or R600 upfront for the year. For more information contact Jenni Beck on 084 953 4889, email jenni@remaxpa.co.za or visit www.adoptadancer.org.

Diesel vehicle emissions contribute to 48 percent of the visual degradation of the urban air quality in the City of Cape Town according to the Brown Haze Study. Councillor James Vos recently revealed this shocking fact when he met with officials of the City of Cape Town diesel vehicle emission testing unit on Tygerberg Valley Road during a routine testing operation of diesel trucks on the road. Vos said that this was the reason why the city established a diesel vehicle emissions testing programme. These teams perform roadside emissions testing of diesel vehicles with the assistance of the city’s traffic and metro police at various roadside testing. He further explained that international research has shown that 20 percent of vehicles are poorly maintained and that consequently these vehicles contribute to 70 percent of the total contribution of vehicle smoke to poor urban air quality. Now Vos encourages members of the public to report badly smoking vehicles to the city so that the necessary follow-up action can be implemented to force the owners of these vehicles to affect necessary repairs.

was done, To stop the merciless poacher’s gun. ... They blamed the buyers from the East, Huge sums were paid for one dead beast, Shot for the trophy of its ‘magical’ horn, Marked for culling from the day it was born. Ounce for ounce, more precious than gold. Containing no aphrodisiac power we’re told, Gone now forever in the name of greed, No one held accountable, all poachers freed. The world points fingers, but it’s too late, The majestic White Rhino has met its fate. The Black and the White, enigmatically aloof. Africa’s rarest beast on cloven hoof. Now we invite visitors to see the ‘Big Four’, As the fifth, our beloved Rhino, is no more It is a day of grief and unbelief we all say Because our very last Rhino died today…

This fund has been erecting a wooden cross next to Bosmansdam Road for every rhino that has been poached in the country. On Thursday about 25 children from two Bothasig day care centres (Agape and Squashy-Kidz) helped pull out some of the weeds that had been growing between the 266 crosses. The children, who are between seven and 10 years old, were also told why the crosses are there. According to Save the Rhino’s Mara Louw, the organisation erected 34 crosses recently to represent the 34 rhinos that were poached last month. “This is the first time we got these children involved, and we are delighted that they will be clearing the area on a monthly basis,” she elaborates. Louw says the organisation doesn’t really like to ask for funds, but at some point their stock of wooden crosses will run out and then they might approach the community. In the meantime, their focus falls solely on creating awareness. She points to a particular cross and says: “That one is for Themba, the rhino that was poached in March on Kariega Game Reserve. He subsequently died a month later. His sister, Thandi, was also poached, but she is recovering well.” Alf Hutchison, the wellknown poet and author of “Sound of Distant Drums”, wrote a poem to help in the effort to create awareness. He gave it to his grandson, Matthew (who was also there during the morning) to give to TygerBurger. The poem is called “Gone”: Our last African Rhino died today, Courtney de Wit (7) from SquashyKidz helped pull out the The press of course had much weeds at the crosses next to Bosmansdam Road, which are to say, being erected on a monthly basis for each rhino poached in They questioned why so little the country. Vrou beseer toe stoel omval JANA BEKKER

wondered about these signage posts that were recently erected along Milnerton La goon. According to Chevron’s communica tions manager Suzanne Pullinger they are Chevron pipeline markers and serve to indi cate where the lines run for the benefit of any one planning to do work in the vicinity of the pipeline. “It is a licence requirement that all servitudes are clearly marked and Chevron adheres to this,” Pullinger says. The Chevron pipelines have always had markers, which were put in place when the pipeline was in stalled. However, over the years they became less visible as they were damaged, removed or buried and were illegible. These markers are the replacement markers which are now more visible. Parow’s treemendous headache REYANA STEYN

All fingers are pointing at an enormous tree in Parow, believed to be the reason the road is filthy, gutters are blocked and a mouldy smell that hovers in the area. Residents are urging the municipality to take action and properly prune the six to seven metre high tree which they claim is causing havoc. The tree, which is situated in Lubbe Street, has been there since the 1990s but some residents say they have reached their limit. However the City of Cape Town says they have dealt with the matter as fairly as possible and cannot keep on cutting the tree as it is against the accepted arboriculture practices as well as the city’s tree policy. David Sievers, a resident, says the tree is a huge inconvenience. “It’s a danger to us all. It makes it difficult to see oncoming cars and an accident can happen at any time. When the tree sheds its leaves, the road is a mess and we continuously call on the municipality to sort out the problem.”

He says over the years his electricity usage has also escalated and they are spending up to R200 a day. “Besides the electricity which has gone up, because we need to use more electricity as the tree blocks our sunlight, I also have a chronically ill daughter and the smell in the area doesn’t make it easier. It is a mouldy smell and a dampness in the area which isn’t good at all.” He emphasises that he loves trees, but he can’t have the tree in the area if it is such an inconvenience. “I have written several letters to the municipality, although they come and trim it, we need a better solution that will sort the problem out,” says Sievers. Another resident Norman de Jager, expressed his frustration with the tree. “My gutters are always blocked, which I have to pay extra expenses for. When the tree sheds its leaves and it’s windy, my swimming pool is covered in leaves and I constantly have to clean it. “We don’t want the tree completely removed, I know that will be a huge job and be very costly, but at least it can be cut down to a decent size.”

Leaves scattered all over that the residents have to clean.

Councillor Tandeka Gqada, the mayoral committee member for community services says City Parks has been nurturing this particular tree as it is an asset to a fairly bare landscape. “The tree was pruned during August 2009, but became an issue during 2010 when a resident installed a satellite dish and complained about poor reception. The City Parks operations manager investigated and a TV installation company was appointed to do some testing. An opinion in writing from the TV specialist indicated that this is not the case and that the tree should not be removed for that reason.” Gqada says the resident was informed, but he was not happy and motivated additional reasons such as pedestrian safety, dropping of leaves, for the removal or severe pruning of the tree. “As a compromise he negotiated that the department will prune the crown of the tree back to reduce its circumference,” she says. The tree is a healthy one and lopping it would not solve the additional problems that the owner brought to the table. “The resident was not satisfied with the decision and requested the manager to put it in writing, which was done. City Parks then went ahead and pruned the tree according to sound practices. The manager also promised that the department would keep an eye on the tree and prune again when necessary.” The department received a further request for branch pruning earlier this year and went to prune during June. “Another request was received to prune the roots of the tree and this will be done now that we are in a new financial year and have funding to do so,” says Gqada. “The tree forms part of our green environment and cannot simply be cut down or reduce in size for unsound reasons. The reasons provided by the residents for the removal or alternatively the reduction of the tree, are all addressed in the city’s tree policy as not being valid reasons for approving the request.”

The City of Cape Town invites Melkbosstrand residents to attend a public meeting on Tuesday 24 July where the MyCiTi team will share its plans for the region. The meeting will be held at the Melkbosstrand High School at 18:30. The school is situated on the corner of Otto du Plessis Drive and 11th Avenue in Melkbosstrand. The city looks forward to the opportunity to brief residents on its plans and to answer any questions.

The Germans just love Cape Town “Last year, arrivals from Germany to South Africa grew by 9,3 percent (235 774 arrivals) and by the end of February this year, arrivals were 7,8 percent up on February 2011”. This is the encouraging news from Cape Town Tourism’s representative in Germany, Barbara Zieme of Akomsa. Zieme was speaking at a Cape Town Tourism market insights workshop. During the workshop Cape Town Tourism’s Dutch representative, Anneli Bronkhorst of WW Tourism, also reported growing support for destination Cape Town, with tourist numbers from the Netherlands up by 4,3 percent year on year from January 2011 to January 2012. Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism said Germany and the Netherlands are extremely important and lucrative

markets for Cape Town. “We will continue to work with our industry partners as well as trade and media from that region to further strengthen these tourism ties. “Just last week Cape Town Tourism hosted a group of 100 top travel agents from German Tour Operator, Gebeco, for a mega familiarisation (FAM) trip. I have been encouraged to witness the enthusiasm for Cape Town amongst these operators,” she said. Mariette said the quality of tourism product in Cape Town is lauded by German operators, awareness levels of Cape Town are high and said they were expecting further growth from this market in the near future. Germany has the world’s fourth strongest economy and also boasts the most stable European economy.

Unlike many of its neighbours, Germany saw an improved economic outlook in the first quarter of 2012 as well as growth in industrial output, employment and per capita income. A total of 1,2 million Dutch are expected to travel internationally in 2012. Techno-savvy and socially responsible visitors, the Dutch enthusiasm for Cape Town may be dampened by the high cost (1 200 Euros on KLM) of the flight. According to Zieme, German travellers are attracted to Cape Town’s natural beauty, wildlife, culture and urban tourism. Niche tourism such as wine and culinary tourism, adventure and extreme sports, culture and heritage, youth travel as well as GLBT tourism, all stand to benefit from a tailored pitch to the German market. M.C.

MC Motors is in Voortrekkerweg, Goodwood. Maak gerus ’n draaitjie daar as jy iets besonders uit die verlede wil sien.

Genrebending souls on fire MARITA MEYER

Zanne Stapelberg and Kathleen Tagg shared the same childhood dream: to be taken seriously as musicians. Zanne grew up in the northern suburbs (behind the “boereworsgordyn”) while Kathleen spent her childhood years in the southern suburbs. Worlds apart as most Capetonians would know.

Kathleen Tagg and Zanne Stapelberg share the sta ge in ‘Soul of Fire’.

They both excelled in music from an early age – Zanne as singer and saxophonist, Kathleen as cellist and pianist. They met while studying and knew from the start they shared the same passion for music – and not only classical music: jazz, blues, world music, folk. “We know each other’s musical soul. We come from the same place and both want to share our love of music with the world,” says Zanne. Their first collaboration was a classical recital in 2005. Many concerts followed, but the one they’ve been talking and dreaming about for years only came into being now – four years later. The production, Soul of Fire, is a genre-

bending production conceived by Zanne and Kathleen. It looks to Spain and Latin America for inspiration and draws on traditions as diverse as classical music, zarzuela, opera, tango, jazz, flamenco and folk music. “Of all my productions, this one has been the most challenging. With Kathleen living in New York, it took us two years and many hours on Skype, email and the phone to build Soul of Fire. Kathleen is amazing. She took folk songs from Spain, Argentina and Venezuela and made intricate new arrangements with a unique combination of instruments – violin, bass and percussion,” says Zanne. Kathleen made all the arrangements with Zanne’s voice in mind. “Zanne won’t sound like a Joan Baez (a famous American folk singer), it’s Zanne sounding like Zanne. Zanne may come from an opera world, but she’s got a gypsy soul.” The duo says they felt “like explorers” while putting together the show. “We’ve done concerts together in the past, but this is a show with outfits and décor and lighting. We want the audience to sit back and relax – and allow the music to flow over them,” explains Zanne.

“The outfits are all Zanne,” laughs Kathleen. “I honestly don’t know how I’m going to get on the stage – or sit in front of the piano – with the dress she has designed for me!” Soul of Fire’s got a world music vibe and instruments such as the cajón, contrabass, violin and even a rain stick are added to the mix. Sharing the stage with Zanne and Kathleen are Piet de Beer (violin), Charles Lazar (contrabass) and percussionist Joseph Avergel. “Soul of Fire is a unique product. It’s about both of us. It’s everything we have.” Soul of Fire can be seen at Die Boer on 13, 14 and 15 July. Book on 021 979 1911. . Zanne’s career highlights include the Cosmopolitan Awesome Woman Award for her opera work, South Africa’s most prestigious art award- the Standard Bank Young Artist for Music, singing leading roles in operas across South Africa and Europe and sharing the stage with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Johnny Clegg. . Kathleen has made her home in New York for the past 11 years and has performed often in Carnegie Hall and at New York’s Lincoln Center and Symphony Space as well as in Europe and Asia.

Chameleon is turning green LOUISA STEYL

The endlessly creative and talented Chris Chameleon will visit The Stage in Bellville on Friday 20 July.

Blues man: Dan Patlansky will be at Die Boer Theatre Restaurant in Durbanville on 18 and 19 July at 20:00. Tickets cost R100. Call 021 979 1911 or 083 406 0111 to book.

From frontman for Boo!, to solo artist and even actor, Chris seems to live up to the name of Chameleon. His latest lyrical project shows his green side. Chris recorded “Minutes to Midnight” to help draw attention to the Leadership for Conservation in Africa’s (LCA) 20/20 Vision campaign. “Sabine Plattner, the founder of the LCA, saw me perform in Rwanda in 2008 for the annual name-giving ceremony of the year’s newborn gorillas,” Chris explains, adding that it was part of a shoot for a travel programme he was doing.

Chris Chameleon

Last year the LCA’s annual council meeting was held in South Africa, and Chris was asked to perform at the meeting – Plattner also asked him to write a song for the occasion. “It was a difficult assignment,

as I write about the human condition and rarely if ever get into issues of the day in my music, so I chose the human condition between two lovers as the premise for this message,” Chris says. “During the council meeting the board of the LCA noticed that I didn’t just go there to perform.” Instead, Chris attended every meeting, seminar, lecture and debate. “This was because I am passionate about environmental affairs,” Chris explains. By the end of the four-day meeting, Chris was approached and asked if he’d be interested in being a celebrity ambassador for the cause, something Chris says is a

huge honour to be asked. However, Chris says: “I didn’t say yes straight away, because I had to ascertain if I could do the LCA justice, if I had the time, resources and sufficient shared principles to do so.” The 20/20 Vision campaign aims to secure 20 million hectares of African forest for conservation by 2020. The song was written and composed by Chris and produced by SAMA-nominated producer Kevin Leicher. “Minutes to Midnight” is available to download from www.chrischameleon.com. All profits from the online downloads will go to LCA for their campaign. To book for Chris Chameleon’s show at the Stage call Sophia on 082 817 6016 or 021 914 3151 or email sophia@thestage.co.za. Tickets cost R120.

FIND OUT AND SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS TOO I can't go on without thanking Dr. Sheik Abdul Kariem for the work he did for me. My friend who had been helped directed me to him, so I met him concerning the voices I was hearing at night and the witchcraft that was possessing my whole family. He made me understand why I had them, because I thought I was bad luck, but after meeting him I got to understand that it was the power of the bad spirits that were chasing me. He removed it and solved the problem I never thought could be solved and now I am happy.

Man vs machine vs the ladies Male dominance will be under extreme threat on Saturday as competitors tackle the sixth Fairbridge Mall Brackenfell Gymkhana from 09:00 in what might well be tricky, wet, conditions. Round four of the 2012 Witzenberg Motorklub Gymkhana Se-

ries will have an added attraction with the presence of Anton Wannenburg and the much anticipated, Gauteng-based, supercharged Ford Fiesta 1600. However, never before have men felt more uncomfortable as their greatest threat on a wet surface will arrive in the minute shape of Nashrene Schloss and

Louise Appelgryn and their great class B Toyota Corolla Sprinter 180i. Can they become the first all-ladies combination to win a Gymkhana overall? As a fifth dan, Günther “Spiderman” Appelgryn knows all about the demands and he will have his wife, Louise, filling the suicide in the immaculate class B

VW Golf MkI 1800. This popular Brackenfell couple are another combination capable of taking overall honours. “Vinnige” Fanie du Toit and Kobus Wilson Jnr currently lead the points war in their spectacular class A Mazda Rustler LDV 2.0 16v and they will have to fend off the close attention of three-ti-

Günther Appelgryn (Brackenfell), a fifth dan in karate, will compete in the Gymkhana.

Kyokushin aiming for Olympics The first European Kyokushin Open held under the newly formed Kyokushin World Union, recently took place in Moscow. The aim of the tournament was to unite the different organisations in order to get Kyokushin included in the International Olympic Committee. South Africa was represented by Siyabonga Tyandela, multiple SA champion from the Peninsula Technikon, who was accompanied by Shihah Hennie Bosman, chairman of Kyokushin-kan Africa. In the third round Siyabonga received an injury to his left knee against one of the top Russian fighters and lost in extra time. Bosman had the honour of being selected as centre referee for the final rounds. If all goes well karate as well as Kyokushin will become Olympic events in 2020.

Siyanbonga Tyandela (right) gi ves his Russian opponent a blow with the knee during the third round of the European Kyokushin Open Championship.

me WBMK champions, Izak van Zyl and Danye Louw, in their turbocharged class G Dynotech VW Golf GTi 2.0 Turbo. Jacques du Plessis and Danye Louw, another team who have tasted success at Fairbridge, and their Du Plessis Auto class C Toyota Conquest RSi 1600 are primed for action. Björn Venter and Jan van der Vyver are the team to beat in class D with their Race-Tech VW Golf MkI 1.4i and rain may well see them challenge for overall honours. Johann Zulch and Gr 10 De Kuilen High School learner Tania Vermaak, are defending their class E title with the Ceres Toyota E30 BMW 325iM but can expect a serious challenge from Deon and Maralize Conradie in their FFR Buggy 2.3. Class F is undoubtedly the toughest class to crack at this stage with the little Race-Tech Datsun Sedan of Herman Mathee and Ruan Reynders under threat from the Innovative Woodwork Datsun LDV 1600 of Anton Smit and Gavin Parsons. Ruan Reynders and Herman Mathee change sides in the GX Sedan simply to spice up matters further. For sheer pleasure the antics of Izak van Zyl and Ettiene Swart in their always sideways Nissan 200SX Turbo will quickly become crowd favourites as will the V8 powered E30 BMW of Mark Fontin and Hennie Odendaal. A capacity entry is anticipated for the event and more information can be found on www.wbmk.co.za . Arrive early – follow the commentary – this is motorsport for the people, by the people!

Durbies sal vorentoe moet vasbyt SAREL BURGER

The ‘glory days’ of CT boxing The wheels are in motion with the upcoming South African Elite Amateur Boxing Championship – an attempt to regain the glory days of yesteryear in Cape Town.

The Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River will host the championship from tomorrow to 7 July. “The glory days I refer to were when the likes of Cape boxing champions such as Skeleton Mboma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,

The South African Elite Amateur Boxing Championship starts today. From left: Dr Ivan Meyer, Mzonke Fana and Sinethemba Bam.

Sipho Mange, Chris and Bramley Whiteboy dominated the South African boxing scene,” said Dr Ivan Meyer, provincial minister of cultural affairs and sport at a media launch last week. All nine provinces will be represented in this prestigious event. “I am particularly pleased that female boxers will also be participating in this event as we have to ensure that greater access happens so that all boxers, irrespective of gender, are given the opportunity to participate and develop to their full potential.” This championship is seen as the perfect platform for the revival of Western Cape and Cape Town boxing. The hard work starts now to ensure that development grooms the new crop of future stars. “Boxing must play its role in providing our disaffected youth with an alternative that they are exposed to on a daily basis in their respective communities. “Sport builds bridges. Sport mends and boxing which, when administered effectively, teaches values of commitment, hard work, discipline and physical and mental endurance.”

Young sailor off to world champs LEON STEENKAMP

A young sailor of the Milnerton Aquatics Club has been included in the national team that will be competing in the RS Tera World Championships in Italy next month. Matthew Allardice (14) is the only Cape Town sailor in the eight-man strong team that will be representing South Africa abroad. Born into a keen sailing family, Matthew, a pupil at Melkbosstrand Private School, started sailing with his dad Paul at the age of 10. He soon became excited and passionate about the sport of sailing. After his first year in the sport he took to sailing solo. “I enjoy it, it’s fun and there are quite a lot of races that you can compete in. You have to be quite smart to be able to get away from the rest of the fleet in a race,” Matthew said, summing up the sport’s appeal. This year Matthew borrowed his mother’s RS Tera dinghy for local regattas.

“My goal was to finish in a top three ranking position.” His goal was to do well in the top events within the Western Cape. His consistency and perseverance paid off. and Matthew secured a third place overall in both the Eastern Province Championship and the South African Sailing Youth National Championship and a fourth place in the RS Tera National Championship. These top positions along with the points he accumulated in the rest of the regattas he competed in, saw him ranked third overall for the annual selections, cementing his inclusion in the SA team. “It felt good to know that I got somewhere with my racing,” Matthew commented. The world championship will take place on Lake Iseo, located in Lombardy in northern Italy from 6 to 10 August. The cost involved to travel and compete abroad is of course high but Matthew recently received some good news. “The mayor of Cape Town said that she would like to sponsor Matthew’s travel and

accommodation cost, seeing as he is the only sailor travelling from Cape Town to compete in the world championship,” Matthew’s mother Michelle said on Monday.

T’berg behaal eerste sege in Superliga SAREL BURGER

Stellenberg is net Saterdag in aksie wanneer hy teen Biskop-

pe te staan kom. Môre en Saterdag bied die HS Tygerberg op sy velde ook ’n o.16toernooi aan waarby die volgende spanne betrokke is: SAKS, Rondebosch, Hermanus, Kasselsvlei, Weston (Vredenburg), HS Swartland, Paulus Joubert (Paarl), Hamiltons-klub, HS Tygerberg A en B. Badminton club wants more players to join up The Sunningdale Badminton Club is asking players to join their ranks. The club which is based at the Sunningdale Sports Complex, is aimed at badminton players of all levels and ages in the areas of Sunningdale, Parklands, Table View, Blouberg, Milnerton and Melkbosstrand. It also welcomes players from other parts of Cape Town who do not mind travelling. The club enjoys the support of the Western Province Badminton Association (WPBA) which helped to establish the local club. “The WPBA is keen to promote the sport of badminton in the region,” says Leon Rademan, a founding member of the club. The current winter season – April

to September – sees members play on Monday nights from 18:00 to 20:00 and Wednesday nights from 20:00 to 22:00. Players interested in becoming members of Sunningdale Badminton Club have to pay a fixed fee per season, which includes all practise sessions and shuttles. The fee varies from season to season, depending on membership numbers and the number of sessions available. Potential members can; however, join up to three sessions on a trial basis while they decide whether to join the club or not. The fee is R20 per trial session and includes shuttles. Players should bring their own racket. For more information send a mail to contact@badmintonclub.co.za.

Wiaan vat eers laat vlam STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Ek was redelik langer as die anders spelers. Liebenberg is ná laerskool Worcester toe waar hy by HTS Drostdy op skool was. Dinge het in 2009 begin gebeur toe hy in graad 11 was. Ek studeer tans ingenieurswese by Tuks.
