BLOUBERG: SPCA LENDS A HAND
Beach clean-ups continue
Injured seal rescued at restaurant KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

In an effort to eliminate the ever-growing piles of rubbish and litter cluttering beaches in Table View and Milnerton, Save a Fishie is doing regular clean ups during lockdown. The organisation expressed shock and outrage at the state of the beaches, hoping to see a large group of volunteers supporting the initiative. They have since urged the community to use eco-friendly items such as bamboo or metal straws, firelighters made from recycled coffee, stationery made from recycled paper or wood pulp, flushable cotton buds and bamboo toothbrushes. Pictured is Zoë Prinsloo at one of the clean-ups.
n injured seal that ventured onto Marine Circle in Blouberg on 30 June scavenging for food at a local restaurant is being rehabilitated at the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre (HBSRC). The cape fur seal, nicknamed “Pakalolo”, was spotted by the fast-acting community who cordoned off the roads to keep him safe until help arrived. The ward councillor, Nicky Rheeder, said she was contacted by several people in the community. “I phoned several different people to try and get assistance, but to no avail. Eventually I made contact with Hout Bay Seal Rescue at 18:50. The lady I spoke to, Kim, immediately assisted me. Within 20 minutes she had one of their volunteers at the scene with the seal. They arranged a crate to transport him to their rescue centre. By 22:00 I had received a video of him having a meal safely at the centre. They have him on medication and are helping him get the necessary assistance,” Rheeder said. Kim Krynauw from HBSRC said the seal had a serious injury to its nose which looked like a knife wound. “A lot of seals are stabbed, shot or beaten. It is an horrific situation, and we need to create
a lot more awareness around the plight of the cape fur seal. The seal is a harbour seal, they are accustomed to humans and being fed by humans. We believe Pakalolo ventured to the restaurants because someone has fed him before. Also during the lockdown wild animals felt safe to venture onto our roads. HBSRC is the only organisation in the whole of the Western Cape that assists with seal rescue and rehabilitation,” Krynauw said. Seal Alert, which was started by Francois Hugo, has been rescuing seals for over 20 years. When Francois passed away in 2018, a group of volunteers took over the centre and changed the name to HBSRC. Krynauw added, “We were alerted to the plight of the seal by a member of the public. HBSRC is still waiting for our permits, so we asked the SPCA wildlife unit to assist with the transportation of the seal to our seal rehabilitation centre in Hout Bay.” V To page 2
