Honouring heroes The Long March to Freedom, a procession of 100 life-sized bronze statues and the largest exhibition of its kind, opened at Century City on Friday 15 November.

The artworks depict South African and international icons, some famous, others unknown, and tells the story of the country’s struggle for freedom. The Long March to Freedom is developed and operated by the National Heritage Project, a non-profit company.

Statues include that of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Helen Suzman, Oliver Tambo, Albert Luthuli and Martin Luther King Junior.

eing a cancer patient comes with its own challenges, but those challenges have become bearable all thanks to a group of mothers that are walking the path with patients.

Through the organisation Mamas Pay It Forward, cancer patients are being given an

opportunity to focus on their recovery while these mothers take care of other things they need.

Started by Nicole Ludicks from Goodwood, Mamas pay it forward aims to provide care and support for those who have been suffering and impacted by cancer as well as abuse.

Standing against violence TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

R

esidents are urged to join hands against gender-based violence through a human chain from Blouberg to Big Bay on Sunday 1 December.

The human chain which will start at 15:00 to 17:00 is organised by Tasha Vukajlovie, Nicole Trigg, Bonny-Jean Gortan and Bronwin Okkers to raise their voice against gender-based violence.

This is the second human chain they are organising.

Vukajlovie says they will continue their activism until the laws are changed.

“We are waiting for our president to deliver on what he promised and until such time we will continue to protest. Words don’t mean much if no action is taken. We are asking everyone to join us in this peaceful protest, to take a stand, to be heard and to help us make a difference. Be the voice of the silent ones,” she says The idea was sparked after a spate of killings of women, including University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana and University of Western Cape student Jesse Hess.

Speaking on the arrest of Hess murderer, Vukajlovie says: “We are ecstatic that he was caught but upset that another young woman had to be violated for him to be caught. We hope the justice system doesn’t fail these women,” she says.

With only a few days to 16 days of Activism of no violence against women and children, organiser Trigg, says gender-based violence continues.

“Our community will continue to protest peacefully until such time as real change comes,” she says.

Relief after suspect is apprehended RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj The family of the slain Jesse Hess (18) say they can now sleep in peace knowing that the suspect involved in her murder has been put behind bars.

Jesse, a first year theology student at the University of the Western Cape and former Table View Primary School learner, was murdered along with her step-grandfather, Chris Lategan (85), at the Beaumont apartments in Victoria Street, Parow, on Friday 30 August.

According to family member Sandy Hess, only two cell-phones, a handbag and flat-screen television were stolen.

The family always suspected that the suspect is known to them as there were no signs of forced entry, Sandy told TygerBurger during a recent interview.

In the earlier interview Sandy told the newspaper that they had been informed that the detectives had already identified a suspect. At the time the police were still however waiting on the forensic results from the department of health.

The suspect was identified last week as a cousin of the victim from Eureka Estate, Elsies River, but was apparently staying with his girlfriend in Hanover Park at the time of his arrest.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday 13 November.

Capt Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson, confirmed this saying that the 31-year old was arrested in Struisbaai in the Overberg district after information was received from the community.

trate’s court on Friday on charges of rape and robbery.

The charges follow an apparent second attack on a 16-year-old victim in Lynberg Road, Hanover Park, on Monday 11 November at 07:45.

“The police told me he was caught. We are very relieved. We can sleep now for the first time in months.

“It is still very hard for us as a family because he is a close relative, but I am happy he was captured,” Sandy told TygerBurger last week.

Roger Cannon, chair of the Parow Community Policing Forum, welcomed the news of the arrest.

“At our executive meeting on Tuesday evening, the Parow police were asked to please establish whether there had been any progress in the investigation in the case of the double murder in Parow.

“We have now heard that a suspect had been arrested in connection with this case. We are hoping that this arrest will shed light on the case as the community is anxious to know what happened on the night of the gruesome murders.

“We believe that the case should take its course, but we are also aware that this process could take months. The family indicated that they want closure on what had taken place, so we are hoping that there are no further issues that will prevent the case from reaching a conviction and a heavy sentence,” Cannon says.

The arrest was also welcomed by Albert Fritz, Western Cape minister for community safety.

“The suspect was reportedly out on parole at the time of both crimes and was arrested for rape and robbery. This was thanks to an effective community policing partnership.

“Struisbaai community members recognised the suspect, alerted the police and two detectives responded. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Cape Town to link him to the mentioned crimes.

“I commend the responsible citizens in this arrest for their timeous response,” Fritz says.

Fritz further calls on the department of correctional services to urgently ensure that dangerous repeat offenders are not allowed back into the communities as they cause further harm,” his spokesperson, Cayla Murray, says.

Ludicks say the Facebook story triggered her desire to help. “I wanted to help ease the pain and support them through their grieving.

“Mamas Pay It Forward is more than an organisation to me, it is a banner of hope to those who not only are going through this painful process, but a continuous family of unknowns, helping each other through it all,’’ she says.

Working with children and families all over Cape Town the organisation tries to do all it can to help through the resources that they get.

Talking to TygerBurger about how she feels about the work they do, Ludicks says: “I feel very proud and honored to have played

a role in the kids lives that we have helped thus far and will continue to help in the future. And not to forget the angel warriors that have lost their battle to this dreadful disease and are now pain free in heaven watching over all of us,” she says.

To continue with the work that they do and offer a helping hand to the patients and their families, Mamas Pay It Forward will be hosting a fundraiser event on Saturday 30 November at the Table View Football Club from 09:00 until 17:00 and the entrance is free. At the event there will be food stalls, children’s entertainment, and a potjie competition among other things.

Ludicks says through the fundraiser, they hope to raise the much-needed funds for

them to have their annual Christmas party.

“We want to supply each family with a much-needed food parcel over the festive season and have at least one less thing to worry about. The success of this fundraiser will mean that these children or families will have a memory that will last a life time,” she says adding that despite them going through all this pain and suffering the organisation will put smiles on their faces and they will know that there are people who care about and love them.

Heroes marching on, in bronze TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

T

he Long March to Freedom, a procession of 100 life-sized bronze statues and the largest exhibition of its kind, opened at Century City on Friday 15 November.

The artworks depict South African and international icons, some famous and others unknown, and tells the story of the country’s struggle for freedom. The Long March to Freedom is developed, owned and operated by the National Heritage Project, a nonprofit company.

From the Khoi leaders Doman and Autshumato, Louis van Mauritious and the Stuurman Brothers; to proud Xhosa and Zulu Kings, Maqoma, Shaka and Dingaan; to struggle veterans, Helen Suzman, Oliver Tambo, Albert Luthuli, and international leaders such as Haile Selassi and Martin Luther King Junior, the procession is a statement of pride in the country’s diverse history and cultures. Next to each statue is a brief description and a did you know fact.

Sarah Haines, project director says this is a celebration of people that fought for South Africa. Speaking about the launch, Haines says it was wonderful. “Guests were blown away. Some had only seen the photos but to see these statues and stand in the middle of them was very emotional. A tour through the procession is an immersive and moving experience as visitors connect with the lives of the people so vividly created in bronze,” she says.

The project is a concept by Dali Tambo and Haines says when he told her about this idea, she didn’t think they could pull it off.

“The more we talked about it the more I believed in it. We had to find funding and the first 18 statues were exhibited at the ANC rally in Mangaung in 2012,” she says.

Haines has no doubt that the statues are an incredible learning experience. “Over the past nine years, since the project’s inception, the Long March to Freedom has enriched the lives of many 1000s of people, from those who worked or were trained on the project, to the school children who have never before had the opportunity to fully experience their own history and heritage, and the domestic and foreign tourists who laud the Long March to Freedom as one of South Africa’s most exciting heritage attractions,” she says.

Their hope is that learners take full advantage of this exhibition. “In the new year we will have educational programmes for learners. We will have a dedicated type of classroom curriculum to teach our children about our history,” says Haines.

The exhibition will be open to the public daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Special entrance fees until end of February 2020 are at R70 for adults and R50 for children under 12.

The theme for this year’s World Diabetes Day and Diabetes month is the Family and Diabetes. It also aims to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.

Using his viral fame for good, the scrumhalf is collaborating with Cipla South Africa, which is based in Bellville, to challenge all men – even the Prince himself – to improve their personal “ball skills” when it comes to checking for signs of testicular cancer.

Using the tag #fafchallenge players and others alike are using social media to post Faf-inspired pictures of themselves to social media.

Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in men between the ages of 15 and 49, and if diagnosed in the early stages, the survival rate is 99%.

Despite this, the number of South African men being diagnosed with late-stage cancer

is on the rise, says Cipla.

Unlike prostate cancer (which requires a blood test or a digital rectal examination), early-stage testicular cancer can be detected through a simple self-examination.

Once a month, after a shower, check your testes for anything painful or unusual.

“An early diagnosis is the key to receiving potentially curable treatment.

“A significant impact can be made by simply increasing the awareness of self-examination among South African men,” says Cipla chief executive officer Paul Miller.

The challenge itself is simple: first, do a testicular self-examination, then post a Fafinspired selfie with the caption, “I’m ballsy – I checked”, and challenge someone to post a picture to continue with the challenge and spread awareness about this important cause.

Watch ready for action TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

M

ilnerton Central Neighbourhood Watch (MCNW) will hit the streets for the first time with a three-hour patrol on Saturday 23 November.

MCNW volunteers have called on more residents to join.

The patrol is being organised by the Table View Neighbourhood Watch and will start at 19:00 from Table View police station.

To keep the residents informed, a meeting was held at Milnerton Library on Thursday 7 November.

At the meeting, committee members were elected. The chair is Anya Ragaller, secretary: Angela Chandler, treasurer: Graham van Ryneveld, operations Leon Heyns, communications: Sven Ragaller, additional Admin: Robert Frey and membership: Jennifer McSweeney The watch is looking to raise about R40 000 to buy three communal radios per sector, car decals, bibs, toolboxes, torches, first aid kits and reflective vests.

Speaking to TygerBurger about the progress made thus far, Anya said the watch is gai-

ning momentum.

“Everyone is excited, and the community is involved. I’m so happy that everyone is taking part, and this is what I wanted.

For us to pull together as a community. Safety is not a one man show, we all need to work together. I’m happy that everyone is joining hands and seeing where they can help,” she says.

Anya adds that the patrol with other neighbourhood watches will be a good start. “We are looking at a huge number of cars in the streets with different neighbourhood watches from Summer Greens, Table View, Milnerton Ridge among others.

It will be a powerful statement for our safety,” she says.

“We are all volunteers and we have full-time jobs. We have to juggle between our day jobs and keeping our area safe. We are very grateful for those that have availed themselves and the sponsors that are willing to work with us,” she says.

The watch will be hosting a Christmas-themed fundraiser on Saturday 11 December from 17:00 until 20:00 at Pienaar Park.

Teens arrested for robbery Two 16-year-old boys were arrested after they robbed two women at knife point in Parklands on Saturday 16 November.

Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler says the victims flagged down the police after the robbery.

“The two boys used a knife to threaten the two ladies for their wallet and a cell phone, before fleeing. Fortunately the crime prevention unit officers were in the same road

and were given a description of the two suspects,” says Chandler.

They were spotted not far from there but ran when they saw the police vehicle. A chase ensued on foot through bushes towards a nearby informal settlement where they were arrested, the knife confiscated and stolen goods recovered.

About the Koeberg Public Safety Information Forum

Section 26(4) of the NNR Act states that “The holder of a nuclear installation license must establish a public safety information forum as prescribed in order to inform the persons living in the municipal area in respect of which an emergency plan has been established on nuclear safety and radiation safety matters.�

What is the Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF)?

The PSIF is a meeting which takes place four times a year. It is used as a platform for residents within the municipal boundary of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to enquire about and receive nuclear safety related information from the facility.

Which topics are discussed?

The forum will address any topic that the members feel could impact their health, environment, and safety from a nuclear emergency preparedness point of view.

Who should attend?

All persons living within the municipal area around Koeberg, all affected and interested organisations or parties, and any other persons concerned about their health and safety from a nuclear and radiation safety point of view are welcome to attend the forum. Persons wishing to attend are requested to register as a member.

Suid-Afrika toon duidelike vordering Die meeste beleggers is onseker wat die invloed van die volgehoue negatiwiteit en die mees onlangse mediumtermyn-begrotingsrede op hul langtermyn-beleggingstrategie behoort te hê.

Hoewel dit maklik is om meegevoer te raak deur al die negatiwiteit, is daar duidelike tekens van verbetering wat meer aandag behoort te geniet.

Ek het onlangs die voorreg gehad om na dr. Brand Pretorius (as hoofspreker) by ’n geselligheid te luister. Pretorius het ’n onbesproke bestuursrekord – eers by Toyota SA en later was hy die insolvente McCarthy Groep se legendariese sakeredding in die middel van die jare negentig.

Sy storie begin met ’n herlewing van sy eerste dag op kantoor, met vure wat figuurlik oral brand in die onderneming.

Verskaffers, aandeelhouers en werknemers het almal gemoedsrus by hul nuwe uitvoerende hoof gesoek. ’n Kernbeginsel (volgens Pretorius) vir McCarthy se omkeerstrategie was om te onderskei tussen wat belangrik (langtermyn) was teenoor wat dringend (korttermyn) was. Hierdie strategie was uiters doeltreffend, maar dit het steeds drie jaar geneem om die McCarthy-groep te red.

Indien ons na Suid-Afrika as een groot sake-eenheid kyk, dan was ons aan die begin van 2018 baie onrealisties oor hoe groot die Cyril-omkeerplan moet wees.

Hierdie plan moet ons land letterlik weer terugkry by die spreekwoordelike gelykbreekpunt.

Ek dink dit maak sin om ook hierdie omkeerstrategie in drie fases te verdeel: . Leierskapverandering en akkurate diagnose van probleme (bv. Eskom, begrotingstekorte, afgraderings). . Ontwikkeling en implementering van ’n omkeerstrategie. . Toenemende verbeterings vanaf vroeëre implementering begin momentum optel en het positiewe ekonomiese resultate tot gevolg.

Wanneer ons die individuele veranderings oor die afgelope 18 maande evalueer, is vordering duidelik te bespeur.

Fokus pres. Ramaphosa dalk eerder op die langtermyn- belangrike kwessies teenoor wat in die kort termyn dringend is, volgens die publiek?

Die ná-2017-skoonmaakpoging tot vandag sluit in agt kabinetskuiwe, nuwe uitvoerende leierskap by feitlik alle staatsbeheerde liggame, leierskapbestuursveranderings by ’n verskeidenheid provinsiale en munisipale kantore, nuwe leierskap by die Openbare Beleggingskorporasie, nuwe hoofde by die polisie, die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag, die Staatsekuriteitsagentskap, die Gespesialiseerde Kommersiële Misdaadeenheid, die Valke en Misdaad-intelligensie, asook ’n deeglike Zondo-kommissie en voortgaande ondersoek na VBS Bank en beleggingsbeloftes van RSA-grootsake van ongeveer R600 miljard (Rapport, 10 November 2019).

Addisionele helpende kragte vir SuidAfrika sluit in volgehoue vrye joernalistiek (onder Sanef/MMA) en ons onafhanklike regbank, ’n nuwe ekonomiese adviesforum, ’n nuwe kleinsakeminister en ’n langverwagte kleinsake-adviesraad, ’n spesiale tribunaal om staatskapingsgeld te herwin, ’n teenkorrupsieforum en Richard Branson se belangstelling in die SAL. Suid-Afrika benodig tans dat alle Suid-Afrikaners aktief deelneem aan positiewe gesprekke oor die positiewe veranderings in die land.

Pretorius en sy bestuurspan skryf ’n groot deel van hul sukses toe aan hul keuse van “doelgerigte optimisme” ten alle tye. Bekwaamheid, integriteit en harde werk was al dikwels in die verlede ’n onstuitbare kombinasie.

Service was outstanding I am writing this letter to you to commend the fire department and the ambulance service for their very professional, pleasant and efficient service.

On Wednesday, I had to call in for emergency help. I got home at about 12:45 to find my partner unconscious.

A friend of mine told me to phone the fire services as they are good. I phoned them at 13:51 requesting assistance. They responded rather quickly in a fire engine and shortly thereafter the smaller vehicle (EMS) arrived and attended to my partner. One vehicle came from Durbanville and the other from Goodwood. The chaps (F Malenza, Jacques le Roux and Riaan Hyman and the rest of the team) were absolutely outstanding. They had requested the ambulance and the ambulance arrived at 14:47.

The lady medic or driver, C Mias, was so friendly, polite and efficient too, even when I nearly fainted in the ambulance!

I was so distraught and upset I did not pay attention to the number of the ambulance and the names of the firemen, but I saw a photo of them in the TygerBurger (how fortunate for me).

I really must compliment the fire services and the ambulance services for their superb, efficient and friendly service. Everyone is so quick to condemn them, but really any interaction I have had with these firemen has been superb. They have been at my complex before and were also so friendly.

Please pass this on to whoever is in charge of these fabulous chaps and the lovely lady, C Mias.

will definitely call on the fire services again should I need assistance (please never again).

Life begins at conception I share my concern with the negative sentiment of Layaa Trevor regarding the way many “men in our society think of women” in her letter, “Abortions: get your facts straight” (TygerBurger 6 November).

The boys and young men I work with around southern and central Africa are being taught to honour, respect and protect women.

Many have been misled by our state propaganda regarding the stages and conditions when abortions are legally allowed to take place.

The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act clearly allows abortion “after the 20th week of the gestation period” if two medical practitioners “are of the opinion that the continued pregnancy – (i) would endanger the woman’s life; (ii) would result in a severe malformation of the foetus; or (iii) would pose a risk of injury to the foetus”.

With no time limit “after the 20th week of the gestation period”, an abortion 24 hours before labour is legally possible.

On Layaa’s second point: consenting children will not be criminally charged if they have sex while both are “a person 12 years or older but under the age of 16 years”.

So, a 12-year-old can legally have an abortion, without parental consent, with no rape having taken place.

Layaa clearly only wants her view on abortion protected; my thoughts on the issue are “ignorant”. Whatever happened to freedom of

speech? Do we now only allow state-sanctioned speech to hospital patients?

Layaa doesn’t want to be told what she “should and should not do with her body”.

We have no right to murder another – life begins at conception and the baby’s body is not the mother’s body – how can it be with different body parts, heart, blood group, sex etcetera?

The problem is the big sharp stones Everybody seems to be under the wrong impression regarding the stones on the pavement.

The complaint is not about the normal small stones on pavements.

The stones in question are those big sharp blue rocks that are placed on many street corners.

They are extremely dangerous and can lead to injuries and claims.

We tend to think only of ourselves In response to “Please think before you ‘scream’ ” by Rob from Bothasig (TygerBurger 13 November), I believe that if residents make provision for a walkway (cement slabs maybe) for pedestrians passing an affected property, there will be less criticism for the stones.

All too often I think we tend to think only of ourselves and not also of our fellow man. With a R22 000 spend I would have thought that a walkway could have been accommodated.

Customs duty fees are ridiculous I refer to the letter (“Do they pay the same import tax?”

TygerBurger 6 November) and I agree with this person 100%.

Everything Fedup has mentioned is exactly what I have experienced.

The tax we as the man on the street has to pay is ridiculous.

For instance, recently my aunt in the United Kingdom (UK) bought an Irish flat cap as a present for me for the approximate amount of R500.

In all the shipping papers she mentioned that it was a gift.

When the cap arrived in South Africa the couriers informed me that I would have to pay customs duty of R488 – cost of cap R500.

I actually queried the fact whether importers of containers full of clothes pay the amount on each sports cap that has been imported.

Op Vrydag 1 November tussen ongeveer 15:00 en 16:00 was ek op pad om iemand naby die taxi-staanplek op te laai – wat ’n nagmerrie!

Die een beampte het die verkeer in beide rigtings gestop dat ek ’n U-draai terug na Voortrekkerweg kon maak.

Nog steeds onseker oor waar die persoon wag, het die ander beampte my gevra om hom in sy voertuig te volg.

Hy het gewag tot ons veilig was en die pad na Durbanville kon neem. Baie dankie aan twee omgee- en hulpvaardige beamptes.

irls from Inkwenkwezi High School in Dunoon received sanitary towels on Thursday 7 November through a campaign by Anita Shologu, Miss Africa finalist for 2020.

Shologu (26), a Gardens resident says she will be donating to four disadvantaged other schools.

“The aim is to empower girls and keep them at school. A pad might seem like a very small thing but when a girl does not have it affects her confidence, self esteem and she loses her dignity. Some can’t even attend classes, so we don’t want them to miss out on school because they don’t have sanitary towels,” she says.

She believes the girls need more role models.

“Girls have no one to look up to and part of my campaign is to give back and mentor and empower them. I’m a model and model coach so part of what I do is to help the girls, she says.

Talking to TygerBurger about violence against women and children, Shologo says boys must be taught that they are not superior.

“I grew up in a society where we were taught that boys are superior. To correct that, we should be talking to boys and telling them they don’t own girls, they are not superior. We are all equal. They must show respect,” she says.

arents, children and the neonatal intensive care unit (Nicu) at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital gathered at the hospital to celebrate World Prematurity Day on Saturday 16 November.

World Prematurity Day is celebrated annually on 17 November and aims to look back on the journey that the nurses and the parents have had with the premature children.

With the training room at the hospital filled to capacity, and the sound of little babies, parents and nurses walked down memory lane as they watched a slide video of their babies when they were born.

Some born at 500g, some at 800 some at 1.7kg and all filled with electrodes. As the video played, most people who were in the room were seen with teary eyes as they remembered the journey they have travelled with their little ones.

Speaking at the event was Althea Koetan, who said she gave birth at

29 weeks about a year ago. She says most parents never thought they will end up in the Nicu ward.

“When you get there its sink or swim, but for a mom and dad with a baby in that ward, sinking is not an option. You have to swim,” she says.

Koetan thanked the staff who gave her hope when she had none.

“I still can’t look at the nurses without getting really emotional or when I talk about our journey at this hospital. They have been with us through and through in the two months that my baby was here. I remember the doctors saying mine is a peculiar case, they couldn’t see what was wrong and they did not know what was wrong. I was on my knees praying everyday hoping for some good news.

“When I had no strength, the nurses were there. I remember coming to the ward one day and as always, the staff were smiling, but that day was different. Their smiles reassured me that everything was going to be okay. Each time I would walk in the ward you would find the nurses cuddling these babies, rocking them and giving them all the love,” she says explaining that because of the tenacity of the staff at the hospital she walked out of there with her strong baby.

Koetan says words of caring and support from the staff was echoed by so many as they have been through a similar experience.

Sister Brenda Evans says they celebrate this day so they can look back, see how parents are doing and talk about their experiences.

“We have had tiny babies. The smallest baby was 380g. Premature babies are all miracles and it is amazing when we look back from when they were born and how they are doing now. It is truly amazing and reinforces why we do what we do,” she says adding that what really warms their heart is to see them grow and contribute to society. For most parents having a premature baby comes as a shock.

“It is a very emotional journey.

Coming to that room for many is shocking because of all the machines and all the alarms, but we do our best. It becomes very rewarding when we see these little babies, now walking around and playing. It really gives us joy and just reminds us of why we do what we do,” she says. Those attending the event had to pay it forward by bringing baby items for Inceba Projects in Bellville . The project runs a safe house for abandoned babies and has a pregnancy centre among other things.

Sondheim revue will have your feet tapping T

he revue Putting It Together opens at Milnerton Playhouse in Pienaar Road, Milnerton on Saturday 30 November with a low-price preview on Friday 29 November.

The show will run until Saturday 14 December.

This fast-paced revue devised by Stephen Sondheim and Julia Mackenzie showcases Sondheim’s songs and draws its title from a song from his famous Sunday in the Park with George.

The revue has seen several productions, beginning with its premiere in England in 1992, Broadway in 1999, with Carol Burnett as the older woman, and the West End in 2014.

Now this unique and inventive musical

entertainment with its witty lines and wonderful energy comes to the Milnerton Playhouse stage as its end of year production.

Nostalgic and surprisingly intimate Putting it Together includes songs from practically every score Sondheim has ever written, as well as some never heard before. There are numbers from Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Follies and A Little Night Music, to name just a few.

The loose plot takes place at an all-night, black-tie party in a loft in New York. With a cast of only five, made up of very talented and experienced performers, the hosts, an older couple (Adri Louw and Simon Speck)

face their disillusions and marital troubles; a younger, a less jaundiced couple (Lara Basson and Louis Fourie) struggle with their feelings and desires, and a commentator (Barend van der Westhuizen) oversees and influences the action.

The spouses deal with infidelity and divorce but finally reconcile before dawn.

It’s an extraordinary crossword puzzle of brilliant songs, described as the funniest show Sondheim never wrote… but now he has.

Direction is by veteran, award-winning director, Sheila McCormick and a live band headed by musical director Chris Cameron–Dow and featuring Tersia Harley on second keyboard, Basil Heald on bass and Schalk Wasserman on percussion completes the cast. Audiences can look forward to a foot- tapping evening of songs that will make and bring back memories.

housands of runners from across the Cape and the broader South Africa will descend on the Rocklands Sports Field for the start of the 2019 JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans race on Saturday 23 November.

With its start line just outside Glendale High School, the race will take runners on a scenic route around the coastline before heading back to the sports field where families, communities and runners will meet in a festive atmosphere in the spirit of community building.

Online entries closed on Sunday 17 November but manual entries remain open on race day and Friday 22 November.

Come Saturday, a hive of excitement awaits the avid and professional runners alike who come from far and wide to enjoy the race. The race forms part of the Coca-Cola League.

For the 12th consecutive year, the race will consist of a 5km, a 10km and a 21.1km race open to all ages.

Partners include the City of Cape Town, African Bank, Community Chest and PPC. TygerBurger’s sister publication, People’s

Post, is the official print media partner.

Run or walk the various routes to see and learn more about the vibrancy and culture of Mitchell’s Plain.

Entry fees are R110 for licenced and R170 for unlicenced runners in the 21.1km race.

Adults in the 10km race pay R70 licenced and R110 unlicenced, while juniors in the 10km pay R50 if licenced and R75 if unlicenced.

Entry to the 5km fun run is R20.

Race-day entries, race card and number collections will take place on Friday 22 November from 18:00 to 20:00 and on race day at 04:30 at Glendale. The 21.1km race will start at 06:00 with a cut-off time of three hours and 30 minutes. The 10km race will start at 06:15 with a cut-off time of two hours and the 5km race will start at 07:30.

All finishers will receive medals.

There will be ample secure parking, however, runners and spectators are urged to arrive early to avoid traffic.

Last year’s 21.1km men’s winner, Elroy Galant.

Brackenfell duo take home medals Brackenfell Shotokan Karate recently had their KSA Cape Town Karate Championships at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Sport Centre.

More than 50 karateka of all ages and grades from various federations participate in an invigorating and highly intensive training session with former World and European Team Kumite Champion, Sensei George Best.

Best seminar wows local karateka Former World and European team kumite champion, Sensei George Best, was invited by United Shotokan-Ryu to conduct three seminars in South Africa.

The purpose of these seminars was to provide South African Karateka with the opportunity to experience high-level training with one of the world’s most-respected kumite (fighting) practitioners and coaches. The first seminar was held in Kempton Park, while the second seminar took place in Makhanda (previously Grahamstown). The third and final seminar was held in Brackenfell.

The Brackenfell seminar saw more than 50 karateka of all ages and grades from various federations participate in an invigorating and highly intensive training session.

While Best cut a somewhat imposing figure in his karate gi, his excellent teaching skills and rapport with the participants ensured that the seminar was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

Best hails from Manchester, where he is a full-time karate instructor and head of Hasha Karate Great Britain.

He was first selected to train with the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) junior and senior squads at the tender age of 13. During this time, he trained regularly with some of the most ferocious karate fighters in the world. As daunting as this was, his persistence and resolve paid dividends, when at the age of 16, he made his debut as a senior in an international

event in 1984.

During his distinguished career he assisted England and Team Great Britain in winning the European Team Kumite Championships on five occasions, and the World Championships twice, making them one of the most successful karate nations in the World.

Best’s passion for his art is infectious, and although the seminars were gruelling, his encouraging, humble and gentle manner inspired and motivated the participants to give of their very best right up until the final exercises and drills were completed.

United Shotokan-Ryu chair, Gary Grapentin, has already been in discussions with Best regarding a follow-up seminar in the future.

Best’s South African seminar marks the third international instructor seminar which United Shotokan-Ryu has successfully hosted in South Africa during the past 12 months.

Previous international guest instructors include Sensei Pascal Lecourt (France) and Sensei André Bertel (Japan). United Shotokan-Ryu seminars are open to all instructors and karateka irrespective of style, affiliation or association.

For many local karate athletes and spectators, this prestigious championship has become very popular and testing the best against each other.

There were 426 entries from 24 clubs who contested this year’s championship in categories ranging from children to veterans, representing all styles of Shotokan-Ryu, Goju-Ryu, ShitoRyu and Shorin-Ryu. South Africa’s best and some that are in the South Africa’s national team also showcased their skills, the categories were extremely competitive with a number of exceptional athletes in the senior categories. Shukry Sedan (MB Shito-Ryu) taking gold in the senior men’s Kumite under-60kg and Maxine Willemse (MB Shito-Ryu) taking gold in the senior women’s Kata.

Neil, wat sy eerste resies gery het op vyfjarige ouderdom en reeds sy nasionale kleure in motorsport verwerf het, was net agt jaar oud toe hy genooi is om aan die Junior Wêreld MX-kompetisie in Italië deel te neem.

Die 80 beste 65cc-ryers van oor die wêreld het teen mekaar te staan gekom, van wie die meeste ’n jaar ouer as Neil was.

Hy het hom uitstekend van sy taak gekwyt en algeheel die 18de plek behaal ná ’n baie kompeterende naweek.

Neil, ’n trotse leerder aan die Laerskool Durbanville, draf ook vir sy skool se o.11A- rugbyspan uit as skrumskakel. Hy neem ook deel aan MTB en het ook vanjaar WP-kleure in tennis en landloop behaal en is ook gekroon as sy skool se junior sportman van die jaar.

Neil van der Vyver is hier in aksie in die 65cc- Suid-Afrikaanse Motocross-kampioenskap, wat hy vir die derde keer gewen het.

SPAR CHALLENGE: SA PROTEAS VS ENGLISH ROSES

outh Africans still basking in the euphoria of the Springboks’ stunning 3212 victory over the England Roses in the final of the Rugby World Cup in Japan have another enticing sporting encounter to look forward to – the threeTest SPAR Challenge Netball Series between the SPAR Proteas and the England Roses in Cape Town at the end of the month.

The Proteas won South African hearts with their outstanding performance in the Netball World Cup in Liverpool earlier this year. It was their most successful World Cup campaign since 1995, when they won the silver medal and their dazzling exploits on the court put netball on the map in South Africa.

They reached the bronze medal play-off, only to lose to the hosts and Commonwealth Games champions, the England Roses.

Now netball enthusiasts will be able to see them in action at home, in the city that will host the 2023 Netball World Cup. The three Tests will be played

at the Bellville Velodrome on Friday November 29, Saturday November 30 and Sunday December 1.

It will be an interesting encounter as both teams have new coaches, who will be put to the test in this series.

England are currently ranked third in the world and South Africa are ranked fifth.

The Proteas and the Roses have met 58 times in all, with England winning 44 Tests and South Africa 14. In the last six matches between the two teams, England have won four and South Africa two, but the matches have all been close, hardfought affairs. The players with the most caps against the Roses are captain Bongi Msomi, recently retired Maryke Holtzhausen and Karla Pretorius, who was named Player of the Tournament at the World Cup in Liverpool.

Matches are on Friday 29 November at 19:00; Saturday 30 November at 15:00 and Sunday 1 December at 13:00.
