urrent and former learners protested outside Table View High school on Friday, 26 June amid allegations of gender-based violence against some learners at the school.

The protester, who called for justice for the alleged victims, also demanded the resignation of the school’s principal, who according to them has played an integral part in the attitude of dominance and intimidation.

Former learner and organiser of the protest, Meaghan Essel, said more allegations against the school are being made by former

learners.

“The stories which we have heard and shared on social media are disgusting and there are more and more coming through from the last 20 years.”

Essel said two people have accused a member of the governing body of sexual assault, the incidents allegedly taking place in the ’90s. “We had anonymous stories coming through of learners who said they saw (him) touch girls and are uncomfortable with him.

We believe that anyone with an accusation, whether you are found guilty or not, should not be allowed in a school area.”

“Some learners have been sexually assaulted at their matric dance and when they

report this to the school, they say that counselling will be provided, but it never happens,” Essel said.

The group said the school has failed its learners and they will not stop until reformation of the entire school. One of the former learners, Tiffani Shute, said the school does not respect them. “When I attended the school, the teachers never listened to our grievances, and it’s still happening. This is unacceptable, and we demand that proper action should be taken against everyone at the school. We do not believe that in 2020 we need educators who are not compassionate and not aware of sexual assault happening around them. We are taking

a stand and essentially asking for a reform of the entire school’s attitude, how they create a safe environment for its learners. We also want counselling for learners who have experienced trauma,” Shute said.

Former and current learners handed over a memorandum of grievances stating that the protest was held due to issues that have been occurring for many years at the school.

At the protest, police demanded the crowd leave, otherwise they had to resort to forcefully dispersing the protestors.

However, no arrests were made, and the crowd left peacefully after handing over the memorandum.

Metro police officers arrested 11 suspects in the past week for various offences including theft of copper cables, domestic violence and driving while under the influence of alcohol. Officers also assisted the police in apprehending two suspects who were found in possession of remote jamming devices.

Lyanne Mapani, product manager of Aviro Health, says there have been lessons on how the platform can better accommodate users who are requesting deliveries on behalf of patients. “Together with the department, we are looking at ways to improve the chatbot so that it can be responsive and better serve users who are accessing it to make requests for their loved ones and fellow community members. We are looking forward to launching additional features in the future such as, offering the service in multiple languages and supporting users in booking appointments.”

Between April and May, the department ensured that around 159 000 pre-packed chronic medication parcels were delivered to stable patients’ homes residing in the province since the Covid-19 lockdown was implemented. To ensure the safety of vulnerable patients, the department has provided all stable and high-risk patients with a two-month supply of chronic medication.

Once their medication has been depleted, the community health workers will deliver medication to their homes.

Data shows people with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, TB, HIV/ Aids, cancer, chronic lung disease and heart disease are at higher risk of becoming severely ill with Covid-19. “All high-risk people with chronic illnesses, accessing services at provincial healthcare facilities in the Cape Metro, are invited to join the Chatbot to confirm their medication delivery,” says Johnstone.

Should a patient not have access to WhatsApp, a family member can access the platform on their behalf, says Johnstone.

RACINE EDWARDES In an interview with People’s Post earlier this year (“Protection of nature ‘essential’,” 14 April) Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, declared there wasn’t expected to be a major decrease in the appearance of litter on beaches.

“There are multiple sources of pollution which emanate from a range of different sources from a wide-ranging geographic area. As pollution does remain in the environment for long periods of time, there is expected to be no decrease,” she said.

And those words rang true, as a study of beach litter by teams from the University of Cape Town, The Beach Co-op, The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department and the National Government’s Working for Coast Programme revealed.

Earlier this month, the City released a statement about the study which was conducted along 250m Milnerton beach in Table Bay, which could be compared to the data from the same location from 1994/’95, 2012 and 2019. About 400m of Muizenberg beach and 400m Sunrise beach were also studied.

According to the statement, the national lockdown offered the necessary absence of beachgoers to allow for the study to go ahead. Researchers, Peter Ryan, Eleanor Weideman, Vonica Perold and Coleen Moloney additionally concluded that the absence of beach cleaning was also necessary.

“Using beach litter data to monitor changes in plastics at sea is made more difficult when beach cleaning occurs, because it confounds the data by introducing biases,” reads the study.

In order to conduct the study, the

teams first had to clean the stretches of beach they would be observing.

They then began their survey of the beaches from 22 April to 1 May, during lockdown level five, and throughout lockdown level four.

The statement reported that during the 10 days of observation during level five, 13 665 litter items with a total weight of 78,7kg was collected from the three beaches.

Additionally, the proportion of local litter (litter from South Africa) was greater at Milnerton (99%) than at the two False Bay beaches (91% to 94%), where most foreign items came from Asia (mainly Indonesia), carried by the Agulhas current.

An important finding at Muizenberg beach was the abundance of glass.

“Interestingly, there was no marked decrease in glass at Muizenberg over the 10-day study period, despite no-one being on the beach,” read the study, which adds that the appearance of glass was from old items which were uncovered daily by the movement of the waves.

Muizenberg and Sunrise beaches also had the highest number of food packaging and wrappers at the beach, at 30% and 49% respectively.

An important finding was made regarding the type of litter found at Muizenberg.

Up to 99% of beach litter was plastic – including foamed plastics and cigarette butts – 33% more than the amount of plastic found in Muizenberg streets.

But as restrictions ease, the researchers noted a considerable change in the amount of litter present on beaches.

“Our daily monitoring of street litter in Muizenberg shows that the amount of litter doubled as we moved from level 5 to level 4 lockdown.”

Just over a month ago, the provincial education department (WCED) announced revised dates for the 2020 school admissions process in the province.

The first phase of offers is now underway and parents would have heard the outcome of their applications by Monday 22 June.

Parents must accept their offers of places by Friday 3 July at the latest.

Parents can accept by going onto the system under “Track applications” and confirming their final choice, or they can hand in a confirmation letter/reply slip to the school where their application was successful.

If a child has been accepted at more than one school, the parent must confirm acceptance at one of the schools on the list where the application was successful. If multiple places are being held for a single learner, this makes it much harder for other learners to find places. If parents do not make their choice by Friday 3 July, the WCED will start allocating learners to their highest choice, and will remove them from the lists of other schools they applied to.

Parents who receive notifications that their applications have been unsuccessful from all schools they applied to must remain calm, she says. “Schools will apply their admission policies in terms of their waiting lists and they could accept learners who have been on waiting lists.”

ributes poured in honouring Table View police officer Capt Kenneth Lombard (52) who lost his life to Covid-19 complications.

This marks the Table View police station’s first confirmed death related to the virus.

Lombard, who served in the police for nearly 30 years, was pronounced dead on Friday, 26 June after falling ill with coronavirus symptoms.

He was admitted to Milnerton Mediclinic when his condition worsened.

Lombard’s sister, Patricia Lombard, said he suffered from bronchitis and tested negative for Covid-19 at first.

orking parents and crèche owners were undoubtedly holding their breath on Thursday 25 June, hoping the minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga, would shed some light on the fate of early childhood development centres (ECDs). But with no mention made of ECDs during her briefing to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), the doors of preschools remain firmly shut.

The Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) has come out in support of ECD centres, saying centres are under tremendous financial strain after months of receiving minimal fees from parents.

“ECD centres are desperate to reopen, to bring in some funds, but also to care for children who are in vulnerable positions with parents returning to work,” a statement released by CECD last week read.

The last time Motshekga directly addressed the issue was on Tuesday 19 May when she said regulations for level three were being finalised and that she believed there would be a solution to this matter very soon. “We understand that ECD centres also provide the necessary caring and feeding services for children from families. Due and careful consideration will be made to ensure

Bronagh Hammond, provincial education department spokesperson, said that the school has cooperated with the department in terms of the investigation.

“The district office has visited the school to ascertain some of the details regarding the allegations.

The initial investigation found

that we maintain the delicate balance between allowing ECDs to operate, alongside the safety and health of the children and their caregivers. We are working together with the department of social development on this matter as it straddles both departments at the moment,” she said.

According to the General Household Survey by Statistics South Africa, over two million children receive some form of ECD services. Of this number, 800 654 children are currently accessing registered ECD programmes by the Department of Social Development.

While a statement issued by the department on Thursday 4 June acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, it reiterated that ECD centres would remain closed under level three regulations.

“As more parents/caregivers return to work, one of their major concerns is around child care arrangements and the reopening of early childhood development (ECD) centres,” the statement read.

The department did, however, announce that it had set up eight workstreams that would conduct a sector-wide risk assessment, state of readiness and make recommendations on health and hygiene measures and protocols to contain Covid-19 outbreak. “These measures may include

Bridget Kahts, programme manager of the CECD, says, considering the financial challenges centres had to face during the lockdown, many ECD centres simply do not have the means to purchase the necessary PPE. “They need our support in order to re-open (or may face permanent closure),” Kahts said. To assist preschools to obtain the prescribed PPE in order to re-open, CECD has launched the #PPEforECD campaign.

CECD is currently working with approximately 600 ECD centres. With a comprehensive PPE package costing roughly R4 000 per centre, the total target amount which needs to be raised is R2.4 million.

The girls who reported the conversation were offered counselling, but declined. The minister has received the memorandum and will respond in due course,” Hammond said.

The organisers of the protest read the memorandum of grievances which was handed over to the school.

s another cold front swept through the province, streets in the Table View and Milnerton areas were flooded at the weekend.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said in a statement that a series of cold fronts were headed for the southern parts of the country.

“The southern parts of the country are about to witness a series of cold fronts with strong to gale force winds along the south-west and south coast. High seas, as well as heavy rain leading to localised flooding in places over the western mountains, where rainfall amounts between 25 and 35 mm, reaching 50 mm, are also expected,” the statement reads.

Table View resident Caren Lewis said Gie Road was flooded at the weekend, with motorists struggling to get through.

“We had major floods in Gie Road in Table View. Looking out of my window, I felt so sorry for the motorists who were unable to get through. I just hope these floods do not result in infrastructure damage,” Lewis said.

Other residents took to social media to express their outrage, claiming the floods are due to blocked drains. They have since demanded the City of Cape Town to unclog the blocked drains to avoid

A stroke is an emergency – even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Western Cape government health facilities still offer emergency care to patients and take precautions to protect visitors from Covid-19 infection. “It seems that less people are seeking emergency care if they think they are having a stroke,” says Dr Colette Gunst, a family physician.

In the province, strokes are among the top five natural causes of death. “Quick action, within the first four hours after you notice symptoms, can mean the difference between life, death and permanent disability,” says Gunst.

A stroke occurs when the oxygen-rich blood supply is cut off from the brain. If you suddenly notice these new symptoms, you may be having a stroke: . A loss of balance or coordination; . blurry vision or a loss of vision; . one corner of your mouth or face droops; . Weakness in an arm or leg; or . if you struggle to speak or

speak in a way that is hard for others to understand.

Immediately get emergency help.

Call an ambulance on 10177 or go to the nearest hospital’s emergency centre. If you have not previously had a stroke, staff at local clinics can help you to determine your risk for having a stroke and making changes to lower your risk.

Going for regular blood pressure and blood sugar tests are essential.

People who have had a stroke in the past have a higher risk for having another stroke.

You can reduce your chances of getting a stroke by quitting smoking, drinking more water and less alcohol, managing your stress by regular exercise and including a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

If you suffer from a chronic condition such as hypertension or diabetes, it is important to continue with your treatment and medication according to what your healthcare practitioner advised.

As chronic patients have a higher risk of contracting severe Covid-19, you can arrange with your clinic to deliver your medication or to provide you with two months’ supply to reduce the number of times you will need to visit the clinic.

About the Koeberg Public Safety Information Forum

Section 26(4) of the NNR Act states that “The holder of a nuclear installation license must establish a public safety information forum as prescribed in order to inform the persons living in the municipal area in respect of which an emergency plan has been established on nuclear safety and radiation safety matters.”

What is the Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF)?

The PSIF is a meeting which takes place four times a year. It is used as a platform for residents within the municipal boundary of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, to enquire about and receive nuclear safety related information from the facility.

Which topics are discussed?

Theforumwilladdressanytopicthatthemembers feel could impact their health, environment, and safety from a nuclear emergency preparedness point of view.

Who should attend?

All persons living within the municipal area around Koeberg, all affected and interested organisations or parties, and any other persons concerned about their health and safety from a nuclear and radiation safety point of view are welcome to attend the forum. aar was vir baie in die vermaakbedryf trane van verdriet toe die Covid-19pandemie en meegaande inperking die bedryf ’n stewige kishou gegee het.

Kunstenaars is sonder ’n inkomste gelaat, maar ook die tegnici en bedryfspersoneel, wat ’n konsert van agter die skerms bedryf. ’n Groep in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf het egter besluit om hoop te skep met ’n nuwe konsertlokaal, van waar regstreekse vertonings na mense se huise uitgesaai kan word.

Hierdie platform, GoLive Concerts, is in Stellenberg gebaseer.

Lelanie Carrick, wat deel is van die inisiatief, vertel sy en haar verloofde, Grant Olivier, het met sy kollegas saamgespan om die projek op die been te bring.

Olivier en die span het voor die grendeltydperk vir ’n onderneming gewerk wat klank en beligting vir konserte behartig.

Die groep – bestaande uit Phillip du Toit, Adam Zackon, Loubser Claassen, Divan Dirker, Gavin Watson, Myburgh Hanekom, Mandilakhe Ndubane, Rodger Bruiners, Frans Segwabe en Justin Reinecke – kan selfs verhoë bou.

T

he City of Cape Town has urged residents to be cautious of an apparent scam where an individual posing as a City electricity official asks for details about the customer’s prepaid electricity meter in an attempt to gain access to their home.

According to a statement, the alleged scam artist visited at least one resident, that the City is aware of, at their Bellville home and asked for the prepaid electricity meter number in an attempt to gain access to the house.

“Earlier this year, the City became aware of similar apparent scams in the Helderberg and Parow areas. These scammers tend to operate where there are many elderly residents. Once the City alerts members of the public, they tend to move to another area.

The scammers tend to work in pairs and encourage a resident to open the front door so that electricity infrastructure, including the meter, can be checked. While one scammer talks to the resident, the other steals small, personal items including purses and cellphones,” read the statement.

According to section 12 of the electricity supply by-law, City employees and contractors have the right to reasonable admittance to a property, however, the City does not have members of staff going door-todoor to check on infrastructure without an appointment. The City does check on electricity meters every so often, but must make an appointment with the resident.

Revenue protection staff may visit residents without an appointment in cases of suspected meter tampering, but will have a letter with them confirming the purpose of the visit.

The City’s Mayco member for energy and climate change, Phindile Maxiti, said all municipal workers and contractors must carry a work-order number specific to that dwelling and a City-issued identification card.

“Residents should ask to check the official identification card before allowing anyone onto their property.

“The identification card must display the City logo, the name and surname of the staff member or mandated contractor, and must contain an embedded photo of the staff member or mandated contractor.

“Residents are not to allow anyone onto their premises until they have verified these details. Our residents should always be vigilant in these cases.”

Any suspicious behaviour must be reported to the City’s law enforcement agencies or to the police. The public can verify whether visitors to their home are in fact employed by the City by: . Phoning the call centre on 0860 103 089 to confirm whether work is being carried out in their area; and . informing the official that they will allow them entry only once the call centre has verified their identity.

Milnerton bride wins ‘honeymoon’ in Maldives KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

Milnerton resident took the crown of SA Weddings Bride of the Year (Boty) this month, winning a seven-night stay for two in the Maldives.

The winning bride, Chantal Magid, relived her special day when entering the competition, describing the experience as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“One of my bridesmaids encouraged me to enter Boty and when I saw the fantastic prizes I decided to enter. It was also a great way to relive our wedding day again. We weren’t able to take a honeymoon after the expense of our wedding, so we are over the moon that we will be going to the Maldives, a dream come true,” Magid said.

The highlight of Magid’s wedding, which was held at Olive Rock in Wolseley, was the moment she walked down the aisle and saw the emotion in her husband’s eyes.

“I knew at that very moment that I was making the best decision of my life. From the beginning of the competition, Greg and I agreed that we would be ourselves and speak from the heart and perhaps that is what the judges appreciated about us. At the time of the final interview I was two months pregnant, so my dress was a bit tight (minus a few buttons that could not close) but thankfully my dress still fitted me,’’ she said.

The winning prize includes return seaplane transfers to the luxurious Adaaran Select Meedhupparu in Maledives, courtesy of Giltedge Ocean Islands and Adaaran Select Meedhupparu to the value of R150 000.

Kath Ballantyne, SA Weddings managing director, said they had thousands of entries in the 19th edition of the prestigious national competition. “It broke my heart to take the event virtual, which

meant the judges did not engage personally with the finalists. But thank goodness for technology and the support of a Bespoke Creations we were able to pull off our first virtual event and were able to crown the Bride of the Year, congratulations to all the winners,” Ballantyne said.

The three finalists received prizes to the value of R295 000. The three winning couples will also receive a cash prize of R35 000. Online security: teach the dangers T

he Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown has led to an unprecedented rise in the use of digital communication in most countries. With this in mind, and with June being Youth Month, now is an important time to again raise the issue of online security for children.

Charnel Hattingh, national marketing and communications manager of Fidelity ADT, says the internet can be a dangerous space for anyone, but children are particularly vulnerable. Parental guidance is the best defence for youngsters online.

“Being a responsible online citizen goes hand in hand with being a responsible community citizen. In real life – in the neighbourhoods we live in, the schools we go to and the places we visit – there are rules and warning signs to help us navigate our way through life safely.

“The online world is not that well signposted, to warn us there is danger ahead. It is up to the individual user to learn the risks and watch out for them. This is why it is so important to know what your child is consuming online and to be able to talk to them openly and often about the digital world,” Hattingh says.

Cyber bullying is but one example of what can go wrong for children online.

Other risk factors include: . Scams: Adults get conned online every day, even by the most ludicrous of emails, like those which state you have been left a fortune by a longlost relative overseas.

Children are not likely to fall for these types of scams, but they could be tempted by free online music or games.

Criminals usually ask for credit card information in order for the child to redeem their “special offer”. Teach your children that offers which seem too good to be true usually are. . Cyber predators: Children can be stalked by someone pretending to be their age and lured into a dangerous personal encounter. These types of predators are prevalent on social media and gaming platforms. . Downloading malware: Cyber criminals can lure children into downloading something enticing like a free game for example, which is actually harmful software (malware).

Once downloaded, criminals could access personal information from the computer the child is using to steal from their parents’ bank accounts or perform other actions to put the family in jeopardy. . What is done is done: Children need to learn that what is put online, stays online. It is nearly impossible to erase something from the internet.

A seemingly innocent Instagram post or a comment made on a friend’s status at the age of 15 could be damaging when they are applying for a job years later. Encourage them to stay out of topics and conversations they are not comfortable with, even if “everyone” is commenting, and to never engage in online behaviour which can be harmful, hurtful or criminal.

Avoid rent cancellation costs Many tenants will now be looking to downgrade to more affordable premises and will need to cancel their leases.

If you are unable to keep up with your monthly rental, then the sooner you take action to move to a more affordable rental, the better.

You will need to take care though to ensure that you cancel your lease properly and downgrade safely without incurring further costs.

Here is how, says Seeff:

Cancelling your existing lease agreement You can cancel your existing lease in terms of section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act by giving twenty business days’ notice, but ensure this is done in writing.

You will be responsible for your rent until your notice period ends.

If you are in arrears, make payment arrangements or negotiate a compromise with your landlord as you will need a good credit record if you want to apply for a new rental property.

The landlord can charge a reasonable cancellation fee which will take into account the time that it will take to get a new tenant and the costs of securing the new tenant.

Most contracts now stipulate a reasonable penalty. Seeff contracts for example include a maximum of two months’ rental.

At the end of the notice period, your deposit and interest must be refunded to you within 14 days in terms of the Rental Housing Act. The landlord can, however, deduct outstanding rent, a reasonable penalty, and the cost of damage repairs.

To avoid damage repair costs, ensure that the property is in the same condition as it was when you took occupation.

Make sure you attend the exit inspection with the agent and/or land-

lord to agree on damage and the cost of repairs (if any) and to return the keys. If you do not attend, you could be vulnerable in terms of what the landlord could deduct for damages.

Important points about your new lease Before you take occupation, ensure that you enter into a professionally drawn up lease agreement which protects your interest as well as that of the landlord. Ensure there is upfront stipulation of what the reasonable penalty would be should you need to terminate it early.

You will need a deposit equivalent to one to two month’s rent as well as the first month’s rent to pay up-

front. There will also be an admin or contract fee that you will need to pay upfront as well.

Make sure there is an incoming inspection with the agent and/or landlord. All defects and damages should be stipulated in an addendum to the lease agreement. This will be vital when it comes to getting your deposit refunded.

Remember to maintain a good credit record by paying your rent on time.

By looking after the property and keeping it neat and maintained and raising maintenance issues with the landlord, you can ensure you can get as much of your deposit back at the end of the lease agreement.

You can cancel your lease without hidden costs.

Tips for educational support AVRIL FILLIES It’s no secret that parents are experiencing unprecedented challenges in their child’s educational journey in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic. Many parents feel at the end of their rope trying to juggle home-schooling with their own workload – but what if a child is also struggling with language, reading and other learning difficulties?

Edublox investigates the merits of online and home-based intervention programmes for households with internet connections and provides tips to parents on how to navigate this difficult situation as we embark on a post-lockdown world.

According to Susan du Plessis, director of educational programmes at Edublox, parents might be more aware than ever that their children are struggling with a reading or learning difficulty.

“Many parents, in an attempt to keep their children entertained and feeling secure during an uncertain emotional time, have read aloud and together more often than usual. In the past, it was usually poor end-of-term report cards that indicated a problem – but after ten weeks of quality time and home-schooling, parents have experienced first-hand which specific struggles are frustrating their children academically.

“Another reason why the need to tackle a reading, learning or language difficulty has become urgent, is because certain schools provide remedial services, but

parents and learners are unable to access them during lockdown.

The result is that children are regressing in terms of the progress they have made so far.”

Online programmes may provide a tangible solution for some of the academic difficulties while children are unable to return to their normally full schedules.

Du Plessis shares some tips on identifying providers that can deliver seamless online support programmes: . It might seem like a bad time to start searching for solutions while parents are still unsure of when exactly will their children return to school, but it can be a saving grace for a child to start with a suitable programme in the interim. It can be a positive experience to start a structured programme that a child can be comfortable with before they are uprooted again, and the everyday pressures of school resume (in addition to the pressures of adhering to Covid-19 safety measures). . In most cases, assisting children with language and reading problems does not always require formal assessments or medical diagnoses, but some guidance is required.

Search for providers that are able to perform online, interactive home-based assessments to guide you around products and services that can help tackle a child’s difficulties if the lockdown levels in a specific province does not allow for physical appointments.

Edublox, for example, focuses on identifying which cognitive skills areas are lacking and makes

recommendations based on the results of an in-house assessment tool. . Parents might feel burned out by their efforts to wear the hat of a teacher and may be weary of programmes that require them to take on even more teaching responsibilities. Look for tutorbased programmes where tutors/ educational professionals interact live with children in small groups, or online platforms that are designed for minimal input from the parents. . Ensure that the provider is knowledgeable in presenting educational support content via services like Zoom, Google Classrooms and Skype. It’s not enough to simply “show up” online – the lessons must be engaging, quality controlled and suited towards the online medium. . It’s also important for parents to consider whether a provider poses long-term opportunities for the child and has a variety of options and services available once the lockdown levels allow physical attendance of classes. This way, parents can ensure that their children continue their journey without being disrupted.

Du Plessis concludes: “Our lives and our children’s education have been disrupted by the pandemic in many ways, but I’m confident that language and reading difficulties can be tackled where professionals and providers have opted to redefine their services for a new reality. Parents, there is hope – and you are doing a stellar job navigating your children through this crisis. I am cheering you on!”

Allergies and the Covid-19 pandemic T

he coronavirus pandemic is a time of anxiety for most people, particularly those with existing health concerns.

Millions of South Africans live with long-term conditions, including coeliac disease and allergic disorders such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and asthma, one of the most common chronic diseases affecting children.

This year’s World Allergy Week campaign, commemorated from Sunday 28 June to Saturday 4 July, focuses on Covid-19 and allergies.

According to Professor Michael Levin, head of allergy at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and CEO of Allergy Foundation South Africa (Afsa), there is potentially harmful misinformation around coronavirus and allergies circulating.

“Patients are unsure about symptoms and whether their allergies increase the risk of serious Covid-19 complications. We want to reassure people and enable them to manage their allergies as well as possible during this time. To do this, we’re providing factual, up-todate resources and support for allergy patients and caregivers, thanks to the generous support of Sanofi,” he says.

Levin stresses that people with allergies and asthma should always take good care of themselves, whether or not there is a pandemic.

“It is conservatively estimated that 80% of asthma deaths could be prevented with better treatment and access to medication. Not managing your condition does not only

Dr Candice Royal and Professor Claudia Gray of the KidsAllergy Paediatric and Allergy Centre in Cape Town will be available for two Facebook Live events during World Allergy Week to answer questions on allergies and Covid19.

Royal agrees the most important message for allergy sufferers is to continue good care.

“Allergic disorders are systemic diseases and should not be looked at in isolation. They can be wellmanaged with education, correct medication and ongoing support from your healthcare professional.

Whilst people with uncontrolled asthma may be in a high-risk group for severe illness from Covid-19, recent studies have shown this is not the case in well-controlled asthmatics,” she says.

“Do not stop taking prescribed

allergy or asthma medications, including inhaled or oral corticosteroids.

“Find ways to access care and medication that limits potential exposure to the virus. For example, have medication delivered, or send someone to collect. A telephone appointment with your doctor may be an option rather than going to the clinic or surgery.”

Symptoms of allergies and Covid-19 can be similar, which has

been a source of concern for many.

Coughing, for example, is common to asthma and coronavirus; yet fever, body aches and pains which are usually experienced during coronavirus are rarely related to asthma.

“If you have asthma, continuing to control it could help you defend against the virus. Taking prescribed controller therapy daily, whether you have symptoms or not, helps repair swelling and inflammation in the lungs so that you’re better able to fight off viruses – including the coronavirus,” says Royal.

“There is no evidence that the use of inhaled or nasal steroids increases one’s risk of contracting Covid-19, and using them regularly might even help prevent you from getting the infection or from suffering with more severe symptoms.”

Nebulisers are not recommended, as they can increase the risk to those around you.

Levin advises using an asthma pump with a spacer, rather than a nebuliser. “Spacers deliver medication to the airways more effectively than a pump on its own,” he says.

According to Dr Motohiro Ebisawa, president of the World Allergy Foundation: “Professional help is essential to understanding what is causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing.

Patients should not assume these symptoms are either from their asthma or Covid-19 but consult their physicians immediately in case emergency care is needed.”

If you qualify for a mortgage loan, then now is an excellent time to buy. Since the repayments on mortgage loans have come down, your earnings required to qualify is also lower. . Buy a new house. If you are thinking about trading up, this could be an opportune time to do so as you can benefit from the interest rate saving which will make your new property almost at the same

rate as the current home. You could also potentially find your dream house at a good price, depending on the area and price band. . Build a cash reserve. If you are financially secure, you can keep your mortgage payment at the old rate and invest the difference into a savings account. If you are renting and have other debt you could keep your repayment at the same level and can tuck away the interest rate savings into your housing deposit account. . Reduce your car debt. There is a big advantage to owning your car and by keeping your car repayments at the original amount, the difference could go towards reducing your car debt. It could also create a buffer against future interest rate hikes. If you are thinking about trading up, a paid off car will come in handy as a deposit on the new car. . Reduce credit card, short-term loans and store card debt. Since this type of debt carries a higher interest rate, typically twice the prime rate plus, you should always aim to pay it off as quickly as possible. If you do not need the savings, keep your repayments at the original level so that you can reduce some of the debt. . Take a short-term loan to expand or start a business. If you have a small business or are thinking of starting a business, now could be a good time to take advantage of the cheaper borrowing costs. You should however ensure you are financially secure and plan for future interest rate hikes.

Whatever you choose, you should always be sensible about the interest rate saving. Do not take on more debt and bear in mind that at some future point, the interest rate will rise again, so be sure not to overextend yourself at this time.

ndien jy onseker is oor of jy die regte beroep beoefen, is jy nie alleen nie – talle mense neem soms kronkelpaaie om by hul eindbestemming te kom.

Die kunstenaar Theo Paul Vorster (62) is ’n lewende bewys hiervan.

Vorster, wat in Stellenberg bly, was sy hele lewe lank lief vir teken. Hy het kuns op

skool geneem en selfs grafiese ontwerp aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch gaan studeer.

“Ek wou toe al ’n kunstenaar word, maar ná my nasionale diensplig en studie in Stellenbosch het die lewe eers ’n paar ander draaie met my geloop,” vertel hy.

Hy het onder meer in verkope in die rekenaarbedryf gewerk voordat hy uiteindelik in 1996 voltyds kuns as beroep begin volg het.

Sy pa is oorlede voordat Vorster voltyds ’n kunstenaar geword het. “My ma het wel mettertyd haar opinie verander en was baie trots.”

Vorster se broer, Vivian, is ook kunstig, maar werk as ’n ramer.

“Dit kom altyd baie goed te pas. Hy raam uiteraard al my werk vir uitstallings en baie van my kliënte se werk wat hulle by my koop. Hy het ’n goeie oog en weet wat werk.”

Vorster is getroud met Janine. Hulle het drie kinders, Anton (23) en Lukie (20), beide studente, en Kara, ’n leerder aan die Laerskool Eversdal.

Farmer uses technology to grow his tomato farm THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo He had very little knowledge about farming when he started farming a few years ago, now Byron Booysen from Kraaifontein has become an expert at hydroponics to grow his tomatoes.

Hydroponics is the growing of plants in nutrient solutions without soil. It allows for the cultivation of plants in areas where they would not particularly grow.

“The only knowledge I had was growing food for household consumption and not to sell,” says Booysen.

“I have always wanted to empower myself, and at university I realised how important the food industry is to the country. After completing my degree in sports science, I applied for one of the funding opportunities from agriculture.”

The support he received from his family helped him persevere.

He says this project was perfect for him because he did not have enough land to start his farm. The principle of hydroponics is to manipulate the environment to produce food without soil, but you need to have good quality water.

Booysen says this does not affect the quali-

ty of his tomatoes and has been told that his tomatoes are some of the best around.

“What happens is that the fertilizer you use has all the nutrients the plant would get from soil.”

He says hydroponics farming is important to communities like Kraaifontein and should be encouraged in such communities.

“Communities can do with its employment and nutrition benefits. There is a huge market for hydroponics.”

Booysen says people can get into hydroponics because it is easy to understand.“The technology varies from simple to complex and one needs a similar market capital to be economically viable. You do not need to have complex technology to use this.”

Because of this, he says this has the ability to change the economic participation. “It can change the market of agriculture in terms of inclusivity of everyone. It can create a lot of jobs.”

He says there are opportunities for people to get into hydroponics. “Once you have done your research, it will be easier to navigate towards the right direction to receive the support you need.”

Booysen says with the constant improvement of technology, it becomes more exposable to people.

Williams will represent GolfRSA’s elite women’s squad, while Simpson and Snyders have once again been drafted into GolfRSA’s national squad.

“Operational savings from its 2020 national squad budget have paved the way for GolfRSA to add a further R500 000 to its ambitious help fund, which provides assistance to caddies and casual workers that have been severely affected by the Covid-19 crisis,” according to GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn.

In April, the organisation set aside R1 million from savings on operational expenses and voluntary staff salary cuts to launch a programme that would identify and reach golf industry workers who have been severely affected by the temporary closure of golf facilities during the government lockdown.

The GolfRSA men’s and women’s national squads were launched in 2016 through funding from businessman Johann Rupert and provide a valuable platform for talented golfers to further develop their skills and showcase themselves through competition, locally and on the world stage, with contributions totalling R15 million.

Members who have achieved significant international success include Snyders’ Junior North and South Championship, while Simpson was part of the team who won the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup last year with a record-setting tournament total of 41 under par. Simpson also secured the individual title with a four-shot victory on 18-under 266.

Meanwhile, GolfRSA has announced its national squad for 2020 with a clear emphasis on youth. “Towards the end of last year and following the Sunshine Tour’s qualifying school in March, we saw a number of our senior squad members graduate to the professional ranks and we wish them all the best in their careers,” said Hepburn.

“This has opened up spaces within the squad and,

following what is a natural ebb and flow, this year’s Class of 2020 is a very young, but very exciting one. We are extremely fortunate that, because of the groundwork put in by the clubs, unions, coaches and academies, we continue to see so many highly talented young golfers come through the system.”

Under normal circumstances, national squad members benefit from funding, advice, training camps, dietary, fitness and psychological support and, ultimately, playing opportunities at home and abroad.

“Unfortunately the international pandemic has adversely affected the playing opportuni-

ties for this year’s squad, including the cancellation of the UK tour, but we felt it was important to acknowledge the recent performances of the players who have qualified for the squad, particularly the nine new members,” said Hepburn.

“However, we will continue to work with the players to ensure they remain sharp, both physically and mentally, during the lockdown period. The squad members will take part in numerous online conference calls and, together with their support teams, we will set individual conditioning programmes for the players.”
