Astronaut visits Cape Town
Local learners and members of the public were dazzled by a talk by NASA astronaut Dr Don Thomas who visited Protea Heights Academy last week as part of his Space Tour in South Africa, to inspire what he calls the “Mars Generation”. Story on page 14.
BLOUBERG TO BIG BAY: TAKING HANDS IN HUMAN CHAIN
Be a link to show support TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
A
human chain is planned from Blouberg to Big Bay against gender-based violence on Sunday 22 September. Those who want to take part can meet on the beach at Marine Circle at 15:00. The human chain is being organised by residents Tasha Vukajlovie, Nicole Trigg, Bonny-Jean Gortan and Bronwin Okkers.
Vukajlovie says their aim is to create awareness and show their support to all the victims of gender-based violence. “Basically, we want to continue making our voice heard when it comes to genderbased violence. We don’t want it to slip and go quiet, but rather to keep the momentum going,” she says. “We have all been affected by this and we have all been victims. We are saying that we will not be victims anymore. We are tired of
seeing rape and murder every day. We are tired of seeing the suffering and pain; innocence being taken away forcefully. No-one should have to go through this. We are tired of words being spoken, we want to see action being taken and laws changed. “We want the president to call a state of emergency. This is out of control. A life is now worth R1 000 as that’s what the bail is for murders and rapist. The country is bleeding and crying for help and our president is
dragging his feet. We need justice now. We are saying we will not stop until we get what we are fighting for,” she says. Gortan says the increase of violent crimes against men, women and children is of great concern. “We, as fellow South Africans are having to take to the streets to get our voices heard. We are having to stand together to have a voice that our perpetrators have tried to silence. V To page 2.
