A
s Covid-19 cases continue to rise, health authorities are closely tracking infection rates in vulnerable areas like Dunoon. The provincial health minister, Nomafrench Mbombo, visited Dunoon last week, encouraging residents to get screened and tested. Dunoon is a high-density area, leaving residents vulnerable to contract Covid-19. According to Mbombo, they have mapped areas where Covid-19 cas-
es continue to increase. All eight sub-districts in the metro has seen an increase in the pandemic. “Out of the eight, we found that there are some that is worse than others, for example Dunoon, which is part of the Western sub-district. The Western sub-district has high numbers of infections. “When we zoom across those, we find that Dunoon is one of those. Not necessarily more in numbers, but in issues like vulnerability, high- density, extreme poverty and the congestion that’s happening in the area,” Mbombo said.
During her visit, Mbombo announced that Dunoon is part of five areas which had been identified for a campaign to separate the area for screening and testing purposes. Dunoon councillor, Lubabalo Makeleni, previously told TygerBurger that 1 500 temporary shelter units will be installed in the area, mainly for the elderly and disabled due to the density of the area. Mbombo added, “There are about 70 cases of Covid-19 in Dunoon. The issue with the social gatherings and social distancing is lacking in most of the communi-
ties, not only Dunoon.” Mbombo also made reference to supermarkets being one of the many contributing factors to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the province, as essential workers continue to get infected. During her visit to Shoprite in Dunoon, she pointed out the following as part of her shopping etiquette campaign: . The cashier should clean their hands with sanitiser for at least 20 seconds between each customer. . They should avoid touching the perspex or glass guards at tills. . Before payments, the cashier
should spray the customer’s hands with sanitiser. . Customers must swipe their own credit and loyalty cards if possible. . Before leaving the till point, the cashier should spray the customer’s hands again with sanitiser. . The cashier should wipe the till, credit card machines and surfaces with sanitiser or a diluted bleach solution. . The packer should wipe the trolley handles and clean their own hands with sanitiser after each customer.
