Choirs harmonise CRAVENBY & KUILSRIVER across oceans GARY VAN DYK
Harmony happens in Elsies River when voices of two choirs from across the world unite in an uplifting afternoon of music and song on Saturday. The ComArt Choir from Elsies River in Cape Town, under the direction of Professor Virginia Davids, and the Sharing a New Song (SANS) Choir from Boston, USA, under the direction of Jonathan Singleton, present a combined programme of choral and popular music, spirituals and jazz standards to wash away the winter blues at the Saint Nicholas Church in Halt Road. The programme will also feature the ComArt Lady Cape Town ensemble and a selection of soloists including rising young singers from the SA College of Music at UCT. “ComArt is delighted to be collaborating with the SANS Choir to bring audiences an inspiring afternoon of music and song,” says Professor Virginia Davids, music director of ComArt. “Music is an effective medium to celebrate cultural diversity, share ideas and build new friendships. These two choirs both use music as a tool to promote nation building and foster international, cross-cultural understanding. It is going to be a wonderful afternoon featuring some magical voices and I encourage people to gather their friends and family to come and enjoy the concert.” The SANS Choir first performed in South Africa in 1997 and, as part of their current trip, will also visit Paarl, Piket-
berg, Riebeeck Kasteel and Vredendal. “We have always received an overwhelming response when we visit South Africa,” says music director Jonathan Singleton. “For nearly 30 years we have travelled all over the world performing with various choirs and organisations, and South Africa remains one of our favourite places to be. “This is our fifth trip here but excitingly it is the first time we will be sharing the stage with the ComArt Choristers.” Part of the proceeds of the concert will benefit the Elsies Schools Arts Collective, a joint initiative with schools enabling more children to participate in creative activities from a young age. The SANS Community Choir was founded in 1983 to foster cultural understanding, initially between the USA and the former Soviet Union. The initiative led to numerous high school and adult choral exchange trips, choral director exchanges and several documentaries being made. Since 1995, SANS has travelled all over the world performing with different communities in countries as diverse as Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia and Brazil. The concert takes place at 17:00 on Saturday 28 July at the St Nicholas Anglican Church, Halt Road, Elsies River, Cape Town. Tickets cost R40 per person and can be booked with Adele at 021 931 7868 between 11:00 and 16:00 daily or email comart@telkomsa.net or visit the Facebook page at Community Arts Association (ComArt). The ComArt Choir is ready to let their voices be heard on Saturday.
