DARTS: TEAM NARROWLY MISSES GUINNESS WORLD RECORD BUT SETS NEW SA RECORD

Almost a world record SAMANTHA LEE @samantha_lee121

T

hey came just short of breaking the world record, but still managed to hold their heads high. Eight men handpicked by Africa’s only professional darts player, Devon Petersen, took on the Guinness World Record for the fewest darts thrown to reach more than a million points at GrandWest recently. And although they came up short of a world record, the men did manage to set a South African record with 39 198 darts thrown to reach 1 000 001 points in a 48-hour marathon. Working in pairs in shifts, the eight players stepped up to the throwline on Friday 23 February at 16:00 and were meant to finish at 16:00 on Sunday 25 February, but went on to achieve their one million points, thus setting the South African record. Last Man Standing, in conjunction with media partner Heart FM and GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, threw their weight behind the incredible attempt. The current record was set in 2010 in Northern Ireland with 35 698 darts thrown

in 46 hours. The local men were Leslie Beukes and Wesley Daries from Grassy Park, Jonathan Warries from Ocean View, Liam O’Brien from Southfield, JP Smith from Heideveld, Vernon Martin and Jude Williams from Mitchell’s Plain, and Roberto Werth from Kraaifontein. “The team was handpicked by the Last Man Standing Team. We used a strategy that would represent every age group and background, as well as each player’s ability and skill set, to complete the attempt. The team consisted of members aged 17 to over 55, which highlights the lifespan of players. The sport of darts has no boundaries,” says Petersen. “The Guinness World Record attempt highlights the sport in a way like no other – giving darts the platform it deserves and exhibiting the skills to the public. The most important reason for the attempt was to create awareness and attract more people, especially the youth, to the sport of darts.” The record attempt formed part of a precursor to the main Last Man Standing Darts competition being held at the same venue in March.

Riverside tackles Bay View in Athlone THOMAS CAROLUS Riverside Rangers will hope to build on the previous league results when they face Bay View United on Saturday in an SAB League match at Hickory Road in Athlone. Riverside Rangers have experienced players who have been in this situation before and the fans expect them to lead by example and ensure that the team remains focused. Pressure is mounting on Riverside Rangers after playing to yet another draw against cross-town rivals Bellstar United last weekend. In goal for Riverside Rangers will be Joas Jacobs and he’ll try to keep a clean sheet. He has done very well since coming into the side and is looking confortable in helping his team to play from the back. Roberto Collins and Cerswin van der Poel will be the wings and will give width for the attacks from left or right. Reagon Faro will be the playmaker for Riverside Rangers, and with assistance from Jason Ruiters, will organise the de-

fence and use pace to get the team in scoring distance. Up front Kyle Mentoor looks a certain starter, with Darral Jacobs and Calvin Adams fighting for the other spot. . Kuils River United are at home against Two Oceans Academy, while Bellstar United travel to Heideveld to meet log leader Junction Rovers.
