Fun brings in funds As Canal Walk launched the Frozen Fun Slide on Friday 29 November, R10 000 was donated to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital. Great fun was had at the launch with friendly rivalry between some of South Africa’s best-known celebrities and media personalities, who took part in The Elements Charity Dash. Comedian Stuart Taylor took first place honours and chose to dedicate his victory to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital. The Frozen Fun Slide Park, which will run until Sunday 5 January 2020, is a collaboration with The Walt Disney Company Africa and in celebration of the impending launch of Frozen II, the sequel to the beloved movie, Frozen. CABLE THEFT: TELKOM WITHDRAWS
No wi-fi since February BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind
R
esidents from Ravensmead are seething as wi-fi at the local library has been off since February because of continued cable theft. Local ward councillor Jackie Visser, says she understands their frustration and while they are trying their best to keep the wi-fi connected, the thieves are relentless. “The Ravensmead library has been without wi-fi due to cable theft that continues to cripple a number of libraries around the City of Ca-
pe Town. The Telkom cables which provide internet access for SmartCape computers were stolen. “Due to continuous cable theft in the area and others in the City, Telkom has advised the City that they will not be reinstating services, and this has forced the City to look at alternative solutions, such as upgrading a radio connection to allow the SmartCape services to be added to it,” says Visser. Solutions that the City are exploring is sourcing other existing wi-fi devices that meet the communication specifications for hardware in the department, which if avai-

lable and in order, could be relocated to Ravensmead. “Regrettably there is no other short-term solution available due to the high data costs associated with 3G and ongoing vandalism and theft of infrastructure. I urge all residents to be vigilant of any actions which may lead to possible infrastructure damage so that the authorities can act swiftly in curbing the crime. Anyone found guilty of cable theft can be sentenced to a minimum of three years for first time offenders and a maximum of 30 years for those involved in instigating or cau-

sing damage to infrastructure,” says Visser. Capt Odwa Makupula, spokesperson for the Ravensmead police, says cable theft is an ongoing problem. “We need the community to assist us in arresting criminals. Besides that it is criminal behaviour, it also inconveniences the residents. If you see people stealing cables, do not approach them, but rather call the police or law-enforcement agencies. Cable thieves can be armed and dangerous and sometimes desperate. If we work together we can catch them,” says Makupula. To report cable theft call the City of Cape Town’s Metal Theft Unit on 0800 222 771.
