Staff in self-isolation TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

leven staff members at The Hague Primary School in Delft had to go into selfisolation this week after being in contact with a colleague who had tested positive for Covid-19. The school’s management team reported for duty on Monday 18 May. According to a source who requested anonymity, the said positive person reported to school on the Monday. “The teacher never came to school on the Tuesday (19 May) then on Wednesday 20

May the teacher informed the principal that he tested positive for the virus. “We are so scared to return to school. This is really a lot of stress on us and now we have all gone into self-isolation.” Last week several teachers contacted the newspaper raising their concerns about what they describe as the sudden return to school amid the global pandemic (“Teachers upset about return dates”, TygerBurger 20 May). The provincial education department has confirmed that a teacher has tested positive for Covid-19 at the school. TygerBurger was informed about this at

the weekend with the provincial education department’s Kerry Mauchline saying, “We have received a report of a positive Covid-19 case at The Hague Primary. Whenever an employee tests positive or is exposed to someone testing positive, the necessary protocols are followed as described by the department of health and occupational health and safety measures. The school will be sanitised accordingly. Those who have been in close (handshake or hug) contact with a confirmed positive case is required to self-isolate for 14 days from their last contact with the individual.” Grades 7 and 12 learners are expected to

report back to school on Monday 1 June. In a statement Brian Schreuder, head of education in the province says, in preparation for the return of these learners, schools must plan to ensure that no class has more than 40 learners in it and that learners are able to maintain a distance of one metre between desks and one-and-a-half metres between learners. “This will require planning which might need classes to be split. This is quite possible when the first grades return to school. Schools must determine the point where social distancing will not be possible in this manner as more grades return.
