Kayla Brand, a learner at Tygerberg High School who lives in a safe house with her mother and her younger brother, is one of the few matriculants who can say that they have had the privilege of attending a ball with prince charming. Kayla (17) was fortunate to be escorted to her matric ball last week by Mr South Africa 2019, Heinrich Gabler, all thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Mr South Africa organisation. The organisation says it was approached by Coastal Radio SA to help make her fairy tale dream come true. The radio station also had help from a few sponsors. “Kayla gets up at 04:30 in the morning to get ready to be on time for school as her studies and education has always come first in her life. She would brave the cold mornings and take a taxi to the Parow train station, and from there walk the rest of the way to her school,” Amanda Trollip says on behalf of the radio station. Heinrich even bought her some flowers as a real gentleman should, the Mr SA organisation says. PHOTO: DIONNE JORDAAN PHOTOGRAPHY

irst her son and now her grandson. Both were killed by gangsters. Joyce Dorothy Wright, the grandmother of slain Adrian Junior (AJ) Alexander (12) is distraught. AJ, Toslin Samuels (10) and her brother MJ Samuels (12) were killed when gangsters allegedly barged into a wendy house behind
Northmead Court in Melton Road. Vineto “CJ” Africa, who was also killed, was allegedly affiliated to the Disciples gang. Mandy Samuels (33) and Bianca Alexander (30), the mothers of the murdered children, were injured in the shooting. Wright said hours before her grandson was killed, she suggested he sleeps over at her house because she was concerned about his safety. “When I came home from work I told him
to come to me, but he said he wanted to sleep at his mother’s (Bianca). AJ was very close to MJ, who was Mandy’s child. They were best friends and were always together.” Mere hours after seeing and speaking to her grandson, she woke up and heard someone shouting “AJ, AJ”. “I first thought it was his mother looking for him at that time of the night. It felt like a dream. But I wondered why he would be out on the streets so late (23:00).
“Someone then came running to my house and said ‘AJ is geskiet. Hy is dood’ (AJ has been shot. He is dead). “When I got to the wendy house, I saw a lot of people standing around and then saw my grandson. “It was such a shock for me because AJ’s father, whose name was also Adrian, was murdered by gangsters here in Clarke Estate,” said Wright.
