T
he Parow West Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) and residents are both fed-up with the constant problem with trolley operators in the area, some of whom may be linked to criminal activities. According to the Parow West NHW’s Facebook page, many residents and NHW members have to deal with the same trolley issues on a regular basis. Most of the posts on the NHW’s Facebook timeline states the constant struggle with
trolley pushers, who steal trolleys to hide away goods that they have stolen in the area, illegal dumping and they are apparently also used for drug dealing.
Crime “Trolley people are a huge problem in our sector. Most trolley operators are somehow involved in crime as they use the trolleys, which are already stolen property and cost over R1 000 each, to transport stolen goods,” the Parow NHW recently posted on their Facebook timeline.
“The problem with trolley guys was first reported in 2011 as a few of them came to well-known drug houses in the area and operated up and down. Most of the dumping in area was also due to them.”
Cooperation Leonore van der Walt, councillor of Ward 2 in Parow recently distributed an open letter directed to all the residents of Parow, requesting everyone’s co-operation to stop using trolley pushers, bakkies and/or cart horse operators to remove household and
garden refuse. She also appeals to Parow residents to put items that can be recycled into wheelie bins or in a separate plastic bag. Van der Walt says the city is currently busy with a recycling roll-out project whereby wheelie bins will be picked up free of charge. She says vagrants sort out household refuse in parks or other public spaces leaving the litter behind, which the city then has to remove. V To page 2

She says dirty residential areas are detrimental to any area, as it can lead to a decrease in property values as littered open spaces are considered to be dumping sites. The Parow West NHW strongly urges residents not to offer jobs, food and water to trolley pushers and/or use their services. “Some of them leave a mess behind that residents have to clean up. They come in the area at any time of the day and night, even on Sundays, scanning the area,” the Parow West NHW warns. They urge residents to stop buying especially valuable items from trolley guys, as it might have been stolen from residents in the same area. The NHW states that if there is no market for buying and selling, residents would not have problems like this. According to the Parow West NHW the numbers of trolley pushers in the area has increased drastically since 2011, and they even have cellphones to communicate with one another. He says drug dealing is suspected to have taken place at the house. “The police have been to this residence on a few occasions, but there has been no change.” “After all this carnage other residents in the area had to clean up the mess that these individuals made, because there was no way anybody would have been able to drive into Upper Hopkins Street with all the broken glass over the roads,” says Evans. He says his wife was returning home from a shop when she drove into the rampage of men chasing another with chains. “She managed to get to our house safely, though frightened and shouted to me to call the police.” “I tried to phone the police. Then I ran down to see what was happening.” “By this time there was a crowd that had gathered watching the people (presumed to be the occupants of the house) fighting in the street with what looked like braai knives being used as weapons,” says Evans. “There is a lot of residents with young children living in the streets surrounding the house and we are not going to allow that they be subjected to this unruliness,” he says. Evans says one of the residents must have reached the police, because three police vehicles eventually turned up at the scene. According to Lt Kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, there is no police record of claims received regarding this incident or any other incidents that might have occurred at the abovementioned address. “It seems that nobody reported the incident that allegedly happened at Upper Hoskin Street on 14 July,” says Williams.

Enige ma met ’n SEUN in matriek sal haar kan vereenselwig met hierdie storie Ek onthou vir Ma waar sy met haar krimpelienrok voor die stoof staan en vetkoeke bak. Ma wat net st. 8 gemaak het op skool, maar by ons gespog het dat sy vyf keer matriek geskryf het. Want sien, ons is vyf dogters, wat almal deur matriek is. Wel, ek het hierdie “statement” van Ma glad nie verstaan nie... totdat ek vanjaar ’n seun in matriek het. Alles is “hou op moan, Ma, dis my laaste jaar, ek moet alles doen”. En werklik: tussen die gym, die meisie en die sport, is dit sowaar ook waar dat hy laas-
te by die boeke uitkom. Almal in die huis besef Boet is in matriek. Pa skel en preek, Ma smeek en bid, maar Boet kap voort. Op sy eie missie. Nodeloos om te sê, Ma se vingernaels is stomp gekou, ’n knop op die maag en sy weet presies hoeveel dae oor is voor die rekordeksamen begin. Dan kyk Boet my vraend aan: “Chill, Ma, ek het dit.” Ek bid saggies en vra: “Asseblief Liewe Heer, tree Jy nou in, ek stres.” Manlief kyk my liefdevol aan: “’n Wyntjie vir ons?” “Met baie eish, Liefie” sê ek. “Die kid gaan oukei wees. Los dit nou, hy moet verantwoordelikheid neem,” sê hy. Ek kyk op na die blinkste sterretjie in die hemelruim. Ma. Sorry, Ma, ek het dit nie verstaan nie. Maar ek belowe, die tweede keer in matriek leer ek baie beter... en daar lê nog een voor. Só ek sal ook eendag kan spog dat ek matriek drie keer deurgekom het (in die geloof).

Scouts help paint, clean up at place of safety From 9 to 13 July a group of 2nd Kenridge Air Scouts did community service at a house of safety for abused and neglected children in Durbanville. The project helped a larger community group called Inside Out who are constantly involved in community service projects. The Scouts completed a variety of projects from varnishing the worn out window and door frames, the bench and a couple of chairs, to painting the girls’ bedroom and adding wall stickers. They also did some general clean-up work which included raking the garden as well as sorting out the play room.
The Scouts had an enormous amount of fun working on the project and playing with the children. Bronwen Seager was in charge of the project. It was completed as part of her community service project for her Springbok Award which is the top award in scouts to which she needed to complete 40 hours of service. It also counted towards the younger scouts’ advancement as they also needed to complete five hours of community service. Bronwen thanks each and every one for all their hard work and commitment, as well as her parents for all the materials, transport and their unfailing support...

Alert cops recover goods quested both men to accompany him to the police station for a second opinion with regards to the value of the bicycle. “The police official estimated the value of the bike as R15 000 and not R1 500 as the suspect said. “It led him to probe the possession of the bicycle as possible stolen property. It was later discovered that a house burglary occurred earlier that same morning in Panorama where a similar bicycle was stolen,” says Williams. The police confirmed that house burglaries occurred in both Parow and Panorama, where the bicycle was also stolen. The suspects, both 22 years of age, were arrested and charged with the possession of stolen property and housebreaking. They recently appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.
Two suspects were recently arrested for breaking and entering into a house in Goudini Street, Parow and stealing goods worth about R15 000. According to Lt Kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, the stolen items that include a Ryobi jigsaw, Ryobi impact drill, Skil sander and Skil hand drill worth about R3 000 and a bicycle valued at R12 000 were stolen and stored at a house in Bedford Street. Williams says a police officer was on patrol in uniform when he spotted the two suspects with a bicycle in Kitchener Road. “The police officer approached the men and questioned them about the bicycle and where they had found it. The one answered that he bought the bicycle for R1 500 from a friend,” says Williams. The suspicious police officer then re-

A unsuspecting thief was recently surprised when he was caught red-handed by the Parow Police while trying to break into a bakkie parked on Selbourn Street in Avondale, Parow. According to Lt Kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, police officers on patrol got a tip-off of a car break-in in progress in the area. They spotted a male suspect near a VW Caddy bakkie, but the suspect quickly walked away from the vehicle when he spotted the police. “Upon closer inspection a police official saw the vehicle’s window was half open. The suspect started to run while throwing stolen items taken out of his pockets, presumably stolen from the vehicle, at the police,” says Williams. He says the police retrieved a Logic frontloader, among other items. “After the suspect was arrested, police officers went back to the scene of the crime and notified the owner of the vehicle. The owner confirmed that the Logic frontloader was his,” says Williams. The suspect, Elroy Steyn (32) from Vex Hof in Connaught Estate in Elsies River, appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court and charged with theft out of a motor vehicle. He is being held in custody.
Jail for life for murder A man was recently convicted of and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a woman in Avondale, Parow. According to Lt kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, the crime was committed in December 2008 when 55-year-old Sophia van Dyk’s body was found at a residence in Parow. Williams says the victim was strangled with a curtain tie and her hands were tied to her back, and cable ties were found around her neck and ankles. Ivan Onverwacht was arrested and charged with four charges including murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. “The suspect was found guilty in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court last year, and was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery with aggravating circumstances and he received life imprisonment for murder with immediate effect,” says Williams.

Die eerste woord wat jou gedagtes binneskiet wanneer jy Hennie Bosman ontmoet, is “intimiderend”. Sy handdruk is stewig en sy bultende spiere getuig van jare se volgehoue oefening. Wanneer jy met Hennie begin gesels, verstaan jy egter waarom hy as ’n “gentle giant” beskryf word. Hy hou nie van baklei of selfs eens argumente nie. En hy is nederig. “Ek wil nie ‘wintie’ klink nie,” sê hy sommer met die intrapslag. “Ek is maar net ’n karate-ou wat gelukkig was om in 20 films te speel.” Die punt is, Hennie het baie om oor “wintie” te wees. Sy lang lys van prestasies is besonders, maar in ’n onderhoud met Hennie besef jy nederigheid is dalk net sy héél beste kenmerk. Hennie, wat saam met sy gesin in Welgemoed woon, het buiten sy rolle in films, ook in ongeveer 20 internasionale en twee nasionale advertensies gespeel. Meestal vertolk hy rolle van mean ouens en hy gaan dikwels dood in die films waarin hy speel.“Ek het al vir my vrou gesê wanneer ek die dag regtig doodgaan, gaan ek nie dink dit is werklik nie,” skerts Hennie. Dit is juis aksierolle waarvoor Hennie perfek geskik is. “Ek sal nie sommer romantiese rolle kry om te vertolk nie,” sê hy. Hennie is ’n gewese wêreldkampioen in karate en het ’n karateskool in Welgemoed met takke oral in die Tygerberg. Tog het geen van sy filmrolle al ooit vereis dat hy karate moes doen nie. “Karate het my geleer veg en om goeie beheer oor my liggaam te hê,” sê Hennie. Hennie het Suid-Afrika al verteenwoordig in karate, skopboks en volle kontak-karate.

Dit was ’n klein rolletjie in The Survivor. “Karate het my die geleentheid gegee om rolle te kry as stunt fighter,” sê Hennie. “Gaandeweg het ek geleer hoe om voor die kamera op te tree.” Tien jaar gelede is hy gekies vir die film, Wake of Death, teenoor Jean Claude van Damme. Dit was ’n groot rol. “Ek kon dit nie glo toe ek vir die rol gekies word nie,” sê Hennie. ’n Dag voor verfilming sou begin, is Hennie meegedeel hy kan nie meer die rol kry nie. In die film het Hennie saam met Tom Delmar, ’n baie be-
kende toertjie-koördineerder gewerk. Hy het vir my gesê dít sal nog baie met my gebeur.” Delmar het vir Hennie op stel gehou en hom van stuntwerk geleer. Hennie het ook ’n rol teenoor Nicolas Cage in die film, Man of War, gekry as die Interpol-agent wat hom vervolg. In dié film sou hy teenoor Cage veg, maar voor die verfilming begin het, het Nicolas net sy kop geskud en weggeloop. “Agterna het mense gesê Nicolas wil nie teenoor iemand speel wat 40 kg swaarder as hy is nie,” sê Hennie. “Stunts is nie maklik nie,” sê Hennie. “’n Ou kom aangehardloop met ’n byl, jy moet koes en jy moet maak of jy hom slaan,” sê hy. “En niemand moet seerkry nie.” Akteurs wat hom beïndruk het, is Clint Eastwood, wat hy gedurende die verfilming van Invictus, ontmoet het. “Hy het baie belang gestel in rugby en Suid-Afrika se geskiedenis,” sê Hennie. Hy beskryf Clint se energie en nuwe idees as ongelooflik vir iemand van sy ouderdom. Wesley Snipes is een van Hennie se ander gunstelinge. Hy het in twee films teenoor hom opgetree. Gallow Walkers en The Marksman. Hy was selfs by Wesley se huis en het saam met sy gesin geëet. Ten spyte van sy roem in flieks, kry Hennie die meeste plesier daaruit om kinders te help om in suksesvolle persone met selfvertroue te ontwikkel. Hennie se vrou, Hayley, is ’n oogkundige in Kenridge. Die egpaar het twee seuns, Henry (19) en Alastaire (11). Hulle doen albei karate sedert voorskoolse dae. Dié naweek speel albei sy seuns vir die eerste keer saam met Hennie in ’n film. Méér mag hy egter nie daaroor sê nie. Watter rol wil hy nog graag vertolk? “Ek wil nog graag die baddie wees in ’n James Bond-film.” En wie weet – as ’n Bond-akteur nie omgee dat sy mede-akteur bo hom uittroon nie, is só ’n rol dalk een van die dae Hennie s’n.

Young dad-to-be in stunt-like escape A young father-to-be of Durbanville miraculously escaped death during a violent headon collision between his motorcycle and another car. The advice Adam Nicol received in a motorcycle shop was to rather jump over a vehicle when he knows he is going to be hit in an accident somehow stuck in his memory. It probably saved his life.

Adam was going home after work on Wednesday 24 July. It was the birthday of his wife, Susan. They are expecting their first child in September. He was driving on Langeberg Road and saw the car coming straight for him and realised there was going to be a head-on collision. In that split second, he remembered what the person who had sold him the motor-
cycle, had said. Adam stood up on the peddles of his bike and took a huge leap into the air. As he landed, his left arm hit the car and was broken in two place in the upper arm. He also landed on the same left hand when hitting the ground. The impact broke many wrist bones in his left arm. His motorcycle was a total write-off.
He managed to grab his cellphone and aware that his wife was pregnant, said gently: “ I am OK, but there has been a little accident…” His left shoulder was so sore that the emergency people could not take his jacket off. Adam has been at Durbanville Mediclinic since the accident and underwent an operated this past Monday. He believes the advice he was given helped him to escape. He also had the top of the range motorcycle riding gear, which protected him further.
Safety in numbers for local watches TINA BURGER The Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch and the City of Cape Town are working in partnership to make Bothasig and Edgemead a safer place. Ward Councillor, James Vos, made several promises which will be closely monitored by residents in these communities. At a public meeting held at Tafelberg School Hall on Thursday 25 July, residents and neighbourhood watch members from Plattekloof, Richwood, Bothasig and Egemead were given a slideshow of what the City’s future plans involve during the upliftment of the area. Vos says that sharing this and other safety information could prevent misunderstandings in future, keep the environment clean and safe, and unite neighbours. Sharing information via social networks could also help to promote neighbourhood watches and communicate the needs of the community to political decision-makers. In the months to come, Vos plans to implement cycle lanes, upgrade sport and recreation facilities and parks, and monitor the air quality through stricter legislation and licensing conditions. He says the city also aims to provide increased benefits for seniors and disabled people. As only 22 000 people applied for the rebates last year, Vos says the aim is to inform communities of the benefits and rates and rebates in order for many more to benefit. He also says extended healthcare services at the Bothasig clinic will be available soon. “More than 12 000 people visit the

Kibbutz idea gets my yes vote Re: “Send vagrants to a kibbutz”, TygerBurger, 24 July. This is by far the best idea I have heard on the subject. Only if one goes to a kibbutz, it is normally a free choice. These guys need to be “taken and kept”, cleaned up inside and outside. Can anybody imagine how clean and crime-free Table View would become? So, how and when can one start this kind of a project? I am sure a lot of people would help to get this going. Gemors by SASSA moet aandag kry Ek stap daagliks verby die SASSA (Social Security Agency)-kantore in Petrusastraat in Bellville naby Sanlam se hoofkantoor. Dieselfde onooglike gesig begroet my elke dag – hordes sigaretstompies en ander vullis, reg voor die deure van SASSA, op die sypaadjie daarnaas, asook ’n gedeelte van die parkeerplekke. Daar is drie groen vullisdromme ’n paar meter uitmekaar, maar mense verkies om hul vullis te los net daar waar hul staan. ’n Mens wonder waarom hul aansoek doen vir gesinstoelae as hul geld het om op rookgoed te mors. Daar is ’n sekerheidswag aan diens. Is dit te veel gevra dat hy die mense aanspreek wat so mors? Meer nog, maak SASSA hulle nie skuldig daaraan dat hul die Rookbeleidswet oortree nie. Sover ek weet, mag geen persoon binne vyf meter van ’n gebou se ingang rook nie en ook nie waar daar ’n samedromming van mense is soos
hier waar hul in rye wag om die SASSA-kantore binne te gaan nie. Waar is die wetstoepassing hier? Daar is geen nie-rook-plakkers of -borde nie – dus rook en stook ieder en elk wat in lang rye staan in die nabyheid van ou mense, babas en kinders. Ek moet ’n wye ompad stap om hierdie gifdampe vry te spring. Wat die meeste pla, is dat dit oënskynlik geeneen van die SASSA-personeel pla nie, anders sou dit lankal aangespreek gewees het. Keep an eye out for porcupine’s mate Much to my surprise, while reading the newspaper, I happen to come across the article “Garden visitor finally trapped” (TygerBurger, 24 July). My daughter and I were on our way to gym last week Friday, 12 July (in the early morning hours) and saw two porcupines running across the road. At first we couldn’t believe it and upon returning home, eagerly told my husband about them (we also reside in Hoheizen). Híér mag jy nie kla oor swak diens nie! Ek kon nie my ondervinding glo nie: Ek word verwys deur my dermatoloog na ’n plastiese chirurg. By die plastiese chirurg is die ontvangsdame baie onprofessioneel – nie onbeskof nie, net glad nie op pasiënte of kliënte ingestel nie – van daai mense wat aanvaar vreemdelinge weet presies hoe dit werk. Iemand van buite kan
mos nie weet hoe dit werk nie. So moenie aannames maak nie. Maar nadat ek met die praktykbestuurder gepraat het, is dit opgelos en die verskoning is aanvaar en ons kon aanbeweeg. Of só het ek gedink… Nie lank nie en ek kry ’n oproep van die dermatoloog se ontvangsdame. Sy is baie teleurgesteld in my – hulle het my verwys en nou steek ek hulle in die skande deur te kla. Ekskuus? Mag ons nie meer kla oor slegte diens nie? Sy hanteer my soos ’n stout skoolseun. Wil nie eens na my kant van die storie luister nie – “ek hoef nie, want hulle sal nie vir my jok nie…” Ek kon my ore nie glo nie! Ek is so naïef, ek het gedink sy bel my om om verskoning te vra, omdat ek swak diens by die plastiese chirurg se praktyk gekry het. Ek is steeds verstom en dis ’n vooraanstaande dermatoloog en ’n vooraanstaande plastiese chirurg met private klinieke in Panorama. Ek wens ek kon hul name noem. My pa was ’n professor in biblioteekkunde op Stellenbosch. Hier het my liefde vir lees en boeke ontstaan,” sê sy. Leonore Ehlers is onlangs amptelik as die nuwe hoof van die Musieksentrum Hugo Lamprechts in Parow aangestel.

“Ek weet wat die vorige hoof se visie en drome was met die musieksentrum, en ek wil graag hierop voortbou en selfs nuwe projekte aanpak.” Só sê Leonore Ehlers, ’n musiek-onderwyser, wat onlangs amptelik as die nuwe hoof van die Musieksentrum Hugo Lamprechts in Parow aangestel is. “Ek sien baie uit na die nuwe uitdaging. Ek geniet die mense, die kinders, en die musiek vreeslik baie. “Hier is ’n ontspanne atmosfeer by die musieksentrum en die personeel ondersteun my baie. Hulle deel ook my visie en ek waardeer hul insette en eerlikheid geweldig baie,” sê sy. Ehlers sê hoewel sy die afgelope tyd waarnemende hoof van die musieksentrum was, berus al die verantwoordelikhede nou amptelik op haar skouers wat die musieksentrum, personeel en leerders betref. Ehlers het in 1986 by die musieksentrum aangesluit en was van 1988 ’n tjello-onderwyser en van 2005 departementshoof van die strykers. Sy moes sedert verlede jaar as hoof van die musieksentrum instaan ná die skielike afsterwe van die vorige hoof, Leon Hartshorne. “Die musieksentrum is ’n fantastiese instelling. Dit skep ruimte vir musiekopleiding en bied vir baie die geleentheid om hul musiektalent te ontwikkel. “Ek wil dus veral uitreik na minderbevoorregtes, wat musiektalent het en dit verder wil uitbrei,” sê Ehlers. Een van die projekte wat haar baie na aan die hart lê, is die Hugo Lamprechts-ontwikkelingsprojek, waarby kinders van vyf skole betrek is en veral die “Adopt a Muzo”-projek. “Dis ’n trust wat gestig is om talentvolle kinders, wat nie die geldelike ondersteuning het nie, te help om hul musiektalent te ontwikkel,” sê Ehlers. Sy sê die aktiwiteite van die trust is on-

Showmanship at Panorama
Matthew Wessels, Hamilton Slater and Thomas Slater (front), three learners from Panorama Primary School, competed in the JuniorJunior class. They each prepared and showed a dairy cow during the Western Cape Youth Showmanship Dairy Cow Championship that was held in Worcester from 14 to 15 June. Matthew attained first place in the JuniorJunior division and received the champion rosette. Hamilton achieved second place and received the reserve champion rosette. The third place rosette was awarded to Thomas. Al three received their Western Cape Colours, were included in the Western Cape Team and will be representing the Western Cape at the National Youth Show Championships to be held in Kroonstad from 21 to 26 September. Anèl Thompson van die Laerskool Panorama was een van vier o.12meisies wat in die WesKaapse tennisspan opgeneem is. Die span het van 18 Junie tot 11 Julie in Amerika aan verskeie tennistoernooie deelgeneem. Anèl het al haar vriendskaplike wedstryde in Coral Springs in die o.12ouder domsgroep en jonger gewen. Anèl het daarna aan die Tenessee State Open Junior Championships STA in die afdeling vir meisies o.12 deelgeneem en vir die hooftrekking gekwalifiseer. Sy het deurgedring na die halfeindstryd en ’n algehele vierde plek in die toernooi behaal. Sy het ook aan die dubbelspel in dieselfde toernooi deelgeneem en tot die eindstryd gevorder. Sy en haar maat het die naaswen nerstrofee van die Tennessee State ontvang.

What community spirit achieves ROWENA HENDRICKS The Tygerberg Service Centre for the Aged and Meals on Wheels yesterday held a charity cook-off where sponsors and volunteers cooked more than 1 000 meals, which were later distributed to various communities. According to Linda Louw, manager of the Tygerberg Service Centre, four teams of eight people participated in the charity cook-off event. “Most of our sponsors and volunteers have never cooked on such a large scale before. They managed to prepare about 1 200 meals of chicken curry bredie on noodles, with just a little help and guidance from our chefs,” says Louw. She says the aim of the cook-off was to promote the Meals on Wheels cause in the corporate sector and the community.
“We would like to get more sponsors and volunteers involved by showing them exactly what we do and sharing with them the experience of the reactions of people in the community when you hand them a cooked meal,” says Louw. She says all the ingredients, including every single spice used, were all sponsored. The sponsors and volunteers later distributed the cooked meals to communities in Kalksteenfontein, Bellville South and Khayelitsha. The kitchen and centre was abuzz last week as the meals were prepared during the cook-off. The seniors even pitched up to welcome the sponsors and volunteers as they arrived,” says Louw. Hy sê die plan bepaal dat ’n bepaalde hoeveelheid werksgeleenthede teen 2030 geskep moet word. “Dit is ’n krisis in dié stadium – ons uitvoere na Europa daal by die dag,” het hy gesê. “Die ontwikkelingsplan sê ons moet mekaar ondersteun. Die plan het ’n klomp krisisareas geïdentifiseer en dit gaan oor hóé ons dit gaan oplos.” Volgens Christo lê geleenthede op ons voorstoep. “Daar is so ’n oordrewe fokus op politieke magstryde in gemeenskappe, maar ongelukkig sit dié magstryde nie brood op die tafel nie. Ekonomiese vooruitgang sit brood op die tafel,” het hy gesê. Hy het die AHI beskryf as ’n sakeorganisasie wat aan die voorpunt moet staan van ekonomiese denke. “Ekonomiese vryheid kan net geskied deur ekonomiese groei, ekonomiese bemagtiging en ekonomiese eienaarskap,” het hy gesê. Christo sê ekonomiese groei word gegrond op goeie onderwys, infrastruktuur-ontwikkeling, gesondheid en verskeie ander faktore. Tienie le Roux, voorsitter van die AHI Tygerberg-sakekamer, het gesê hulle is oorhoofs besig met ’n strategiese plan vir die herontwikkeling van die gebied.

Looking deep into the SKA An astronomical awareness meeting is coming to Cape Town. The National Research Foundation for Astronomy is welcoming the community of Cape Town to the second meeting held at Ithemba Labs Auditorium, in Blue Downs. This is one of the largest meetings for astronomy in the southern hemisphere and South Africa was chosen as the host of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA-Project allows astronomers to “see back in time”. Because the lightwaves from very distant stars or galaxies take a long time to travel through space to our telescopes, we see them as they were a very long time ago. Now astronomers want to build the most powerful telescope ever, to see back to before the first stars formed. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA)
will be a radio telescope. Instead of seeing lightwaves, it will make pictures from radiowaves. The majority of the SKA, the full dish array and the dense aperture array,will be built in Africa. The SKA-Project itself will be discussed as well as other astronomy related aspects and it promises to be interesting meeting. Taking place tomorrow and Friday, the meeting will have a full list of prominent speakers like the deputy director general at the Department of Science and Technology, Doctor Thomas Auf der Heyde, and the Director of the SKA-project, Doctor Bernie Fanaroff. If you really want to help, GO BIG Casual Day, South Africa’s most successful fundraising project for persons with disabilities, has invited eight new organisations to also benefit this year. This year Casual Day is on Friday 6 September and the theme is ‘Go Big’. So whether you wear big hair, a big tie, or just go big on the number of stickers you wear, anything goes, as long as it’s big. Donations are raised through Casual Day stickers that are sold at R10 each. Last year Casual Day raised a whopping R22.2million, 10 % more than the year before. All in all, the project has raised R170 million. Casual Day is a project owned by the National Council of Persons with Physical Disabilities and has been run in partnership with its national beneficiaries, SA National Council for the Blind, Disabled People South Africa (DPSA), SA Federation for Mental Health, Deaf Federation of SA (DeafSA) and Epilepsy SA, for the past 18 years. This year Autism South Africa (ASA), Down Syndrome South Africa, The National Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy (NAPCP), the South African National Deaf Association (SANDA), the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA), Alzheimer’s South Africa and the South African Disability Alliance (SADA) have joined. Connect-ED at Settlers High Connect-ED, a high school campaign aiming to reduce HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies amongst South African youth visited The Settlers High School recently. The campaign brings serious messages to the youth, who are encouraged to abstain – this is the safest; plan ahead – for safer sex; take responsibility and ask for support. Sarika Modi, manager of Connect-ED says the last survey done in 2009 reported 45 276 schoolgirls became pregnant. Of these, 109 were in Grade 3. The lack of safe sexual practices amongst youth leaves sub-saharan Africa as a region with the highest rates of HIV and STIs in the world.” Connect-ED was developed by Durex, the condom brand, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education to address these issues.
Connect-ED aims to achieve both education and behaviour change through various platforms. Students are engaged by actors who role play some of the social scenarios that teenagers face. In addition, learners are engaged with a 30minute movie called The Line, featuring stories about high school learners and some of the dangers of “crossing the line”. Protest march turns to chaos ANDRÉ BAKKES A service delivery protest in Table View and Milnerton bordered on anarchy last week Friday. Thousands of Du Noon residents marched towards the municipal building in Milnerton along Koeberg Road, while swinging sticks, damaging vehicles and severely disrupting traffic. Their intention was to hand over a memorandum. Despite heavy police presence to keep the crowd under control, officers had to resort

to stun grenades to try and disperse the protesters. According to spokesperson for Table View police, Lt Elizabeth Munro, shots were fired by someone in the mob, but no-one was injured in this attack. “They had permission to march from 10:00 to 16:00, but they started much earlier. The reason for the march is the need for housing. There were many more than just the expected 2 000 protesters,” she adds. Shacks were set alight and stones were thrown at vehicles on the N7 highway, which had to be closed for several hours.

Secrets of the women pharaohs ANDRÉ BAKKES For a moment, let your mind drift away over the sandy dunes of Egypt, across the Nile and into the Valley of Kings. Here in Egypt’s royal cemetery, 62 pharaohs have been immortalised. Some were great – some were simply embarrassing. Hetshepsut, Tausret and Arsinoë II, along with at least three other Pharaohs were women. Members of the Egyptian Society of South Africa (TESSA) gathered at Kelvin Grove
Club on Saturday to hear more about these rare and wonderful women rulers. TygerBurger was fascinated by Keith Grenville’s talk “Hatshepsut – Betrayal of Royal Cover-up?”, intrigued by Jean Smith’s “Tausret – the Unknown Pharaoh” and captivated by Professor Anthony Humphreys’ “Arsinoë – a Valid Pharaoh?” The day itself (as opposed to the formidable names) will live long in the memory. TESSA members regularly get together to learn more about ancient Egypt, but on Saturday the annual day school was especially entertaining.

This year’s water theme has inspired a variety of challenges to be solved as varied as a chocolate shake experiment, development of a water supply system for a city street and the creation of a folded paper vessel, which
can hold water. Last year, one of the tasks participants faced was the creation of a new flavour of ProNutro cereal. The winners of the Western Cape round will compete against the winners of each of the other eight provinces in a final round, at a series of HIP2B²-organised interactive public events throughout South Africa. The sixth national HIP2B² iTHINK Challenge tackles the topic of water resource management with fun and imagination. This challenge kicked off at Northpine Technical High in Brackenfell on 22 July. The challenge takes its a cue from National Science Week, which will turn on the tap to water-wise thinking until Saturday 3 August. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) celebrates science during the annual awareness week with a number of initiatives, including the challenge, which is implemented across all nine provinces in conjunction with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA). “Water is our most basic resource and our most critical for survival,” said Erna Taljaard, National Project Co-ordinator for SAASTA. “We face tremendous challenges ahead in ensuring that there will be adequate water resources for the world’s population, and today’s youth will have a lot to contribute towards finding and implementing sustainable solutions. Science, maths and technology will deliver much-needed solutions in resource management. Therefore it is imperative that our youth develop the necessary analytical and problem-solving skills, like those stimulated by the HIP2B² iTHINK Challenge,” Erna said. More than 7 000 learners in all nine provinces will take part in teams of six, participating in a variety of science and maths related tasks, riddles and problems. The event

Moment of Clarity takes tunes abroad LOUISA STEYL
“A
ggressively melodic.” That’s how guitarist Neil Bezuidenhout describes his band, Moment of Clarity’s, music. “We are at a point where we are very comfortable with what we do and we want to nurture our sound,” adds frontman, Lindsey Roussouw. This “middle line” sound, as Lindsey calls it, is something the band has been honing for quite some time. It’s also the sound that has seen them change their approach to the music industry. Lindsey explains that while they are too heavy for mainstream rock stages, their music seems to be not heavy enough for metal stages and while South African audiences are not too sure how to classify them, their fan base abroad is steadily growing. “Overseas markets tend to be more open to our sound,” Lindsey says.
Fire The band’s new-found fire is partly thanks to the return of Mike Cubic, the band’s bassist who relit the flame recently. Mike left the band for two years to teach English in China and says he was disappointed to find the band on a bit of a hiatus upon his return. “Mike came back and he pulled us back into shape. That was last year October,” Lindsey says. “We’ve changed direction, not in music, but in terms of how we get ourselves out there,” says drummer, Andrew Potter. Online Whereas before the band’s focus was on gigging, these days they concern them-
selves more with marketing themselves online. “We’ve all played together in different bands at different times,” Andrew says of the band’s inception. He happened to run into Neil and Mike in a club one night and since the two had recently come out of a “band breakup”, they decided to start a new band together. “We couldn’t find a better drummer at the time, so we settled for Andrew,” Neil jokes. When things with their initial guitarist didn’t work out, they got Dean Hammond. “We just use him for his studio,” Neil teases. Another big focus for the band at the moment is recording. “That’s our number one priority,” Andrew says. The band previously released a 4-track self-titled, self-produced EP, but this time they are working on a full-length album which they hope to release by year end. “It needs to be amazing,” says Dean, who is mixing the album and who the rest of the band agrees is a bit of a perfectionist. Their first single, “Grinder”, which is available on the band’s Soundcloud profile, is already receiving positive feedback.
Overseas Once released, the band is plans to push the new album overseas and have made contact with European labels. “If you ever want to see this as more than a hobby, you have to push yourself overseas,” Dean says. “We’re learning that we have to look beyond our borders, because there is no one locally who will push it,” Andrew says.
