“E

k het Vanessa nie betaal nie, want sy het nie vir my gewerk nie. Sy was soos ’n kind in my huis,” sê Joseleyn Bekker (59). Vanessa Boom (24) het in 2005 saam met haar tannie Kaap toe gekom om Bekker se kleinkinders te kom oppas. Hulle het toe in Parow gebly. Sy beweer sy is R1 200 per maand vir haar werk belowe. Maar sy is nooit betaal nie. “Ek het eers vir die dogter gewerk en haar

kinders versorg en hul huis skoongemaak. Later het ek vir die ma begin werk. Sy het my daagliks ’n f*kken m**d genoem. Eendag het sy my teen my mond geslaan dat dit gebloei het,” vertel sy. “Niemand het haar hier vasgehou nie,” sê Bekker. Maar tog het Boom een Sondag, toe sy winkel toe gestuur is, met ’n groepie vroue in die straat begin praat oor die toestande waarin sy leef. Sy sê sy het op ’n matras op Bekker se slaapkamervloer geslaap en het lang ure – oor naweke ook – gewerk en sê sy is daagliks beledig.

Nadat TygerBurger verlede week berig het hoe wetstoepassingsbeamptes vir Boom by die huis gaan haal het (“Plattelander werk glo ses jaar sonder betaling in Boston” TygerBurger, 26 Maart), het ’n vorige buurvrou van Bekker die koerant gebel. “Die verskriklike ure wat sy (Boom) gewerk het, is net links van slawerny. Sy het party oggende halfsewe al buite staan en vee en dan was sy elfuur in die aand nog besig. En die geskel was iets verskrikliks. “Die vlak van aggressie teenoor hierdie vrou was angswekkend,” sê dié buurvrou, wat anoniem wil bly.

Maar Bekker sê sy is nie ’n lelike mens nie. En, sê sy, boonop kan Boom glad nie skoonmaak nie. “Ek het haar nie gevange gehou nie,” herhaal sy. “Hoekom het sy nie weggeloop nie?” wou ’n paar lesers ná laasweek se berig weet. Boom sê sy weet nie, behalwe dat sy bang was en nie geweet het waarheen om te gaan nie. Boom kom van ’n klein plaaswerkersgemeenskap in die Langkloof. Sy kan nie lees en skryf nie en het jare laas kontak met haar familie gehad. V Na bladsy 2.

Els is besig om verskillende partye bymekaar te kry om aan ’n plan vir Parow te begin dink.

Ilse Els, bestuurder van Mould, Empower, Serve (MES) wat al vir nege jaar met straatmense in Bellville werk, sê daar is waarheid in hierdie menings, maar mense het dikwels die kat aan die stert beet as dit kom by haweloses. “Nie alle straatmense is misdadigers nie. Om die waarheid te sê, ’n geweldige klein persentasie pleeg misdaad. Straatmense is self aan die ontvangkant van kriminele aktiwiteit. Hulle goedjies word gereeld gesteel. Hulle word gereeld verkrag – mans en vroue. Dit is hoekom hulle verkies om naby plekke van veiligheid te slaap. Of ver weg van die middestad,” sê sy. Sy sê voorts dat nie alle straatmense drankverslaaf, ongeletterd of werkloos is nie.

A police visit to an illegal scrapyard in Parow yielded stolen property with an estimated value of R100 000. On Wednesday morning 26 March, local police, law enforcement (metal theft unit), Telkom, Metrorail and SARS executed a joint sting operation at scrapyards in Parow. The purpose of the operation was to retrieve property belonging to the City and Telkom. “The operation concentrated on a residence in Parow Street in Parow. They were met by the legal occupant of the residence who operates an illegal scrap yard from his

home,” says Lt Kevin Williams, spokesperson of the Parow police. He says upon entering the premises the city’s cable theft unit saw several underground copper cables and this discovery launched an intensified search. Some of the following items were discovered and confiscated: power tools, car radios, 26 underground street light cables, spotlights and computer hard drives and games. Microwave leads to thief’s undoing MAGRIET THERON

But Bremer, a former policeman from Claremont, claims he knows how to defend himself. He said he managed to pin the intruder down and pin him in a corner until police

arrived. But his daughter in law Beverley Shepherd tells a different story. Beverley, who stays in the house, says Donald has been forgetful since the attack. He was in fact struck hard in the face and the perpetrator threatened to kill him. Beverley said she woke up when Donald, covered in blood, looked into her room, a stranger standing by his side. The stranger had a microwave oven in his arms. “The man ordered us to open the front door for him. He held some kind of weapon under his shirt with which he threatened us,” she says. Beverley opened the door and in his haste, the burglar dropped the microwave oven. “He told me to bring it to him, and I told him he can do it himself,” she recalls. The man then pulled it through the door by its cord. While the suspect was running away with the microwave he was apprehended by a Parow police vehicle that was responding to a house breaking in progress in sector two, said says Insp Kevin Williams, spokesperson for the Parow police. “The suspect was successfully apprehended and arrested for possession of stolen property and house breaking. He is a 42-year-old male with no fixed address and appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on 26 March,” Williams says. According to Beverley the police arrived in three vans 10 minutes after they were called, and the thief was caught five minutes later. By this time he was already wearing other clothes. “At least we got our microwave back, and it is still working, can you believe it,” she says.

Man walks into dagga bust A search for drugs in a Parow shop led to the arrest of a 29-year-old Tanzanian man. Around lunchtime on 26 March the metro police drug task team responded to information about alleged drug dealing in Rissik Street, Parow. “It was alleged that a 65-year-old man was selling drugs from his shop ‘Oom Kosie se winkel’,” said Lt Kevin Williams, spokesperson for the Parow police. While they were busy at the premises

the younger man entered the shop, bringing with him “a strong smell of dagga”, Williams said. “The officers immediately searched this male and found 100 packets of dagga in his possession with a street value of R2 500. “The suspect was arrested and was processed at the Parow police station.” He appeared in the Bellville magistrates’ court on 28 March on charges of possession of drugs.

The metro police hit the dagga jackpot when they searched a premises in Parow for drugs and a suspect walked in carrying 100 packets of dagga on his person.

Proposal to increase motor vehicle licence fees by 3.4%

esidents of the Western Cape have four weeks to comment on the proposed 3.4% motor vehicle licence fee increa-

On Friday 28 March the provincial government gazette published the draft regulations pertaining to motor vehicle licence (MVL) fee increases in the province. “Because this increase affects over 1,7 million vehicle owners, I have decided once again that...the proposed increase should be subject to a full public participation process,” said Western Cape minister of transport and public works, Robin Carlisle last week. Following similar public participation last year, increases of an average 5.3% were implemented across the province. This year, the proposed fee increases amount to an average 3.4% for the Western Cape, which is lower than the inflation rate of 5.9%, recorded in February. “During the period 2001 to 2005/06, the Western Cape increased its licence fees dramatically by an average of 10% over five years, which led to this province having the highest licence fees in most classes of vehicles and trailers in the country,” said Carlisle, adding that by the 2006/2007 financial year, motor vehicle registration and licence

fees in the Western Cape were on average 50% higher than that of other provinces. “In addition to the burden on ordinary motorists, many truck owners registered their vehicles in adjoining provinces where fees were lower, thus significantly reducing Western Cape revenues.” Accordingly, the province had not increased its motor vehicle registration and licence fees between 2005 and 2013, while other provinces have increased theirs during the same period. “As a result our licence fees for sedans and light vehicles have come broadly into line with other provinces, while our heavy tare trucks and trailers are in many cases significantly lower than neighbouring provinces,” he said. The draft regulations will be open for public comment for four weeks, until 25 April. Moenie jou skok of weersin wys nie. ’n Kind vertel gewoonlik net een keer vir iemand en afhangende van dié reaksie, praat hy nooit weer daaroor nie,” het sy gesê aan die ouers en onderwysers by die praatjie. Volgens haar lui konserwatiewe statistieke dat een uit elke vier meisies en een uit elke ses seuns seksueel misbruik word. “Nie almal vertel wat gebeur het nie, en sommige wat wél vertel, word nie geglo nie,” het sy gesê.

Spesiale behoeftes Seksuele misbruik by kinders met spesiale behoeftes of verstandelik gestremde kinders is drie tot vier keer hoër, sê sy. “Hulle is meer kwesbaar, omdat hulle nie weet hoe om hulself in ’n sosiale omgewing te handhaaf nie en nie die verbale vermoëns het om te verstaan nie. Hul ouers is ook minder geneig om met hul kinders oor seksuele misbruik te praat, omdat hulle hul meer beskerm,” sê sy. “Mense vra my dikwels of dit in hul buurt ook gebeur? Seksuele misbruik van kinders sny deur alle rasse en sosio-ekonomiese groepe – dis in Constantia net so algemeen as in Khayelitsha,” het sy gesê.

“Vir sommige mense voel dit soos iets wat nie my probleem is nie. Mense raak kwaad en dit bly iets waaroor mense nie praat nie,” het Van Wyk gesê. “Maar kinders kyk na ons vir beskerming. Dis belangrik dat as ’n kind jou vertel, jy dit hanteer om die minste skade aan te rig. Dis ons plig om te kyk om tekens raak te sien,” het sy gesê. Kinders verstaan nie die term “sexual grooming” soos wanneer ’n slagoffer se vertroue gewen word voordat seksuele dade met die kind gepleeg word, sê sy. In 40% van die gevalle is die oortreder ’n familielid en in 50% ’n familievriend. Slegs in 10% gevalle is die oortreder ’n vreemdeling, volgens haar.

Beste vriend “Dis dikwels daardie persoon wat lyk na jou kinders se beste vriend, die oom wat met al die dogtertjies speel, wat so oulik met die kinders is. Hy isoleer later die sagte teikens en dis moeilik vir daardie kind om te weet waar die lyn getrek moet word,” het sy gesê. Van Wyk het twee boeke geskryf, waarvan een vir ouers is om hul kinders op elke ontwikkelingsvlak te leer om hulself te beskerm en ’n kinderboek. Sy het gesê ouers moet hul kinders “leer swem”, verwysende daarna dat hulle moet leer om “nee” te sê en op te tree. Wat is seksuele misbruik? Van Wyk sê dis as iemand met meer mag of ouer as ’n kind – selfs ’n ouer kind – daardie kind gebruik vir sy eie seksuele bevrediging. “Dit sluit dus die aanraking van geslagsdele, verkragting, ’n versoek dat die kind ’n volwassene betas of masturbeer, asook nie-tastende seksuele misbruik soos die wys van kinderpornografie in. “Dit behels ook gesprekke van ’n seksuele aard,” het sy verduidelik.

Nuwe en strenger reëls geld vir skoolvervoer BRENDEN RUITER Verskaffers van vervoer aan skoolkinders gaan binnekort strenger beheer word as die Stad Kaapstad se vervoergesag, Transport for Cape Town (TCT), sy nuwe reëls in werking stel. Lee van den Berg, bestuurder van vervoer-regulering by TCT, sê as deel van die Stad se omvattende geïntegreerde vervoerstelsel is dit uiters belangrik dat skoolvervoer gereguleer word. “Duisende kinders word daagliks tussen hul huise en skole vervoer en dit is belangrik dat daar na die gehalte van hul vervoer omgesien word. Ingevolge die nuwe reëls gaan kontrakteurs, wat leerders vervoer, met die skool ’n kontrak moet sluit en ook by die TCT moet registreer. “’n Afskrif van die ooreenkoms tussen die skool en die kontrakteur moet te alle tye in die voertuig wees. Skoolvervoer sal ook duidelik met ’n plakker gemerk word,” sê Van den Berg. Elke drywer gaan ook met ’n nie-oordraagbare identifikasie-kaart toegerus word om seker te maak hy is die gemagtigde persoon om die voertuig te bestuur.

“Ons het onlangs tydens ’n blitsoptrede ’n drywer in hegtenis geneem wat om 07:00 dronk was. Kan ons ons kinders in so iemand se hande los? Dit is belangrik dat die aangewese persoon agter die voertuig se stuurwiel is, sodat daardie persoon verantwoordelik gehou kan word as iets gebeur.” Ook sal drywers oog- en spesiale bestuurstoetse moet ondergaan,” sê Van den Berg. Een van die belangrikste aspekte van die nuwe reëls gaan wees dat veral laerskoolleerders in hul skoolbussies vergesel word deur of ’n ouer of ’n onderwyser. “Ons het al ’n geval gehad waar ’n tweejarige seun op ’n sypaadjie gestaan het en nie geweet het waar sy skool is nie. Hy is net afgelaai. Daar is ook gevalle waar kinders aan die oorkant van ’n besige snelweg afgelaai word. Ons wil sulke probleme uitskakel.” Van die nuwe reëls gaan insluit dat skoolbussies sagte sitplekke en noodhulpkissies moet hê. Kontrakteurs moet ook gedetaileerde roeteplanne aan die TCT voorlê. “Ons soek nie ’n situasie waar skoolvervoer inmeng met bestaande roetes waarop MyCiti byvoorbeeld ry nie.”

Stad reageer oor wortelskade aan huise BRENDEN RUITER As boomwortels jou huis beskadig, sal die Stad Kaapstad jou vergoed. TygerBurger het twee weke gelede berig oor boomwortels wat die huise van inwoners van Jan van Riebeeck-straat in Ruyterwacht beskadig en dat hul pleidooie om hulp op dowe ore val. Alle wortels wat aan die buitekant van ’n eiendom is, sal deur die parkeafdeling gesnoei word, maar dié binne die eiendom moet die eienaar self verwyder,” sê Walker. Sy voeg by mense wie se huise beskadig is, moet by die Stad se eise-afdeling ’n klag indien. “Indien daar meriete is aan die eis, sal die huiseienaar vergoed word.” As boomwortels jou huis beskadig, sal die Stad Kaapstad jou vergoed.

Reëlings vir spesiale stem Mense wat nie op stemdag na ’n verkiesingstasie kan gaan nie, kan aansoek doen vir ’n spesiale stem op die voorgeskrewe vorm van die Onafhanklike Verkiesingskommissie (OVK). Aansoekvorms moet tussen 7 en 17 April ingedien word by die OVK-kantore in Nobelpark, Bellville. Die vorms is ook daar beskikbaar, of by die DA-kantoor in Durbanville by 021 976 5910 of per e-pos na durbanville@dawesterncape.gov.za. Daar word voorsiening gemaak vir mense wat amptelik aan diens is, soos onder meer polisiebeamptes by stemstasies of verpleegpersoneel of mense wat nie op stemdag by hul geregistreerde stemstasie of binne die grense van Suid-Afrika sal wees nie. Hulle sal op die twee dae voor die amptelike stemdag op Maandag 5 Mei of Dinsdag 6 Mei by hul aangewese stemstasie kan stem, mits hulle die toestemming van die OVK kry. Mense wat weens fisieke gestremdheid of bejaardheid nie na ’n stemstasie kan gaan nie, kan aansoek doen vir ’n tuisstem. Hulle sal op 5 of 6 Mei tuis deur die OVK-beamptes besoek word. Sommige munisipaliteite se dienslewering is totaal afwesig. Die slaggate op baie paaie is so groot soos kraters op die maan. Die onderwysstelsel se wieldoppe is aan die afspring... En so kan ’n mens voortgaan totdat jy jouself in ’n donker put van ellende bevind. Maar tog, as jy diep grawe, is daar nog hoop. Daar is nog mense soos Thuli Madonsela, wat nie voor politieke druk swig nie. Daar is nog ’n regstelsel wat onderskei tussen goed en kwaad. Daar is nog ’n grondwet wat die regte van landsburgers beskerm. Die media word nog toegelaat om te kritiseer en skandale oop te vlek. Ons het nog ’n vrye en demokratiese verkiesing. En dit is presies by dié laaste punt waar Suid-Afrikaners binnekort die geleentheid kry om die eerste, gróót, positiewe verskil te maak. Stem vir die party wat jy dink SuidAfrika weer op die pad na herstel kan plaas, want só kan ons tog nie voortploeter nie.

Dodgy credit card calls On Saturday morning I received a phone call from a man saying he was from my credit card company, saying my card was about to expire. I thought it was a courtesy reminder call from the company reminding me of its expiry. But then he said that someone from Nigeria wanted to take R3000 out of my account and he wanted to confirm if that was genuine. Of course, it wasn’t. He then wanted to cancel the transaction, for which he needed the middle eight digits of my card number but I refused. He warned me that he would then allow the transaction to go through and if I complained to the credit card company, they would reject the complaint because of my bad reaction to his call. Immediately afterwards I phoned the company, they confirmed there wasn’t a pending transaction and the call I had received was a scam as I had suspected. Waiting for the light to change Fuel prices are going up and up, yet you stand at a traffic light for long periods at a time and if you look closely most of the traffic lights have sensors embedded in the tar. What I don’t understand is when you travel down Durban Road, especially in the morn-

ing traffic, you stand very long at certain traffic lights wasting petrol – especially at Bella Rosa. I phoned city traffic services to complain about that particular intersection and I was blown off. The fact that the lights aren’t synchronised amazes me. Aren’t we paying enough for fuel as it is? skade aanrig aan hierdie arme grasperke rondom die dam, dan moet niemand toegelaat word om by die dam te kom nie – nie eens die kinders wat daar probeer visvang nie. Ek het persoonlik al hoeveel vislyne met hoeke daar opgetel en vislyne verwyder wat verstrengel was aan ’n wit eendjie se poot. As hierdie voëls sodanig mors en die water besmet met hul mis, sit asseblief vir elke denkbare voël in die hemelruim ’n doek aan. Hierdie voëls, watter kleur en soort hulle ook al is, is ons almal se vriende – ons kan hulle liefde gee wanneer niemand anders vir ons beskore is nie. Hulle praat met ons in hul eie taal. Refuse removal a ripoff I fully understand the frustration of Ansa (“Word geforseer om vir diens te betaal”, TygerBurger, 26 Maart) regarding the city’s refuse removal fee. I live in a retirement village of about 350 houses and 95 flats. Each property pays R90.61 monthly, yet we only have about 80 wheelie bins between us which are cleared at a central point. Cops get new office

brand new permanent law enforcement office is planned for the northern district and is to be located in the Brackenfell central business district. Currently being refurbished, the station will be positioned in the building that previously housed the local pigeon club in Brackenfell, situated on Old Paarl Road, opposite the municipal offices. Brackenfell ward councillor Carin Brynard, who spearheaded the R1.4 million initiative, said this was the most suitable building the city owned that was available for the purpose. Brynard also chairs the city’s safety and security portfolio committee. “Law enforcement needed a permanent office in the area in order to become more visible to the public,” she says.

Complaints office At the moment law enforcement officers working the Brackenfell area utilise offices at the local traffic department. This rendering them somewhat inconspicuous as they are unable to have their own signage or entrance. This is necessary as the new office aslo aims to serve as a place where members of the public will feel comfortable visiting to register complaints relating to law enforcement. This includes the contravention of any municipal by-laws, which law enforcement, in close collaboration with other local, provincial and national government departments and external agencies, upholds. Common by-laws passed by the City Council include those formulated to control graffiti, noise, stray animals, vehicle parking, building and construction, zoning, metal theft, loitering and public drinking. Panorama pupils probe pi for pie Pi is not something you eat at Panorama Primary School and their Pi Day contest definitely didn’t involve the wearing of any aprons. “Pi is usually associated with the circumference of a circle where we use the fraction 22/7 or the decimal 3.141592653589793238. However, they are both approximations as the exact decimal notation is actually infinite” explains Danell Truter, IT teacher at Panorama Primary. “One American laboratory came closest to unravelling pi to around 10 trillion digits after the decimal,” she says. But any grade 7 learner at the school could have told you that. They all had to memorise pi’ s digits as part of a mathematics assessment. The learner who memorised the most digits in each class was crowned class pi champion. “On Pi Day, all the class pi champions reci-

ted their pi digits. It was a nervy thriller as the top three participants were very close. In the end, Houston Yu was crowned the school’s second Panorama pi champion, reciting 275 digits without stuttering,” Truter says. The Pi Day contest also consisted of a written assignment and giving to the less-fortunate. Part of the assignment included calculting the circumference of a round edible item (such as a pie). In a drive to encourage charity, the Grade 7 learners donated edible pies and other round delicacies to La Provence Retirement Village, Huis Ebersohn and Tehillah charity organisations. Tehillah had to call in for reinforcements as their truck could not carry all the donated treats. Elim Night Shelter transported the final 20 edible items for them, Truter says.

Learners from the Brackenfell High Grade 10 class spent a four-hour shift in the Parow CBD with Mould Empower Serve (MES) workers on 26 March. The collaboration was part of the learners life orientation community service project, in which they reach out to others as part of their curriculum. “We had a good time, but we had to pick up human faeces,” said one learner.

“I have never had so much work to do, but it was fun,” another said. According to Audrey Pieterse, foreperson of the MES team, the learners made for a very colourful morning. “They were full of jokes,” she said. MES and Brackenfell High also had teams conducting clean-up work in the Bellville and Brackenfell CBDs. V MES is a registered nonprofit organisation ser ving the homeless and destitute community. “Ons werk is ’n mondvol”, sê Linda Louw, voorsitter van die Tygerberg-dienssentrum vir bejaardes en mobiele etes in Parow. Die werk van hierdie instelling, wat al 45 jaar in Weimarstraat in Parow gesetel is, is inderdaad 1 763 monde vol, want dít is hoeveel borde kos weekliks vir kinders, gestremdes, gesinne en pensioenarisse maak word. “Ons het voedingsprojekte in BellvilleSuid, Khayelitsha, Parowpark, by die Tygerberg-hospitaal se oogkliniek en die pediatriese kliniek, Kalksteenfontein, Valhallapark en twee skole. “Wat jy hier by die sentrum self sien, is wat ons vir ons seniors doen. Holiday off to a good start at Parow East Parow East Primary School’s carnival took place at the school last Thursday just before the start of the holiday. It was a fun-filled day with merry-go-round rides, water slides, a gladiator challenge, jumping castles, face painting and lots of games on offer, some hand made by grade 6 teacher Louis Mundey. Waste site EIA commences TygerBurger reported on 26 March (“Waste drop-off being built”) that construction has started at the proposed Beaconvale waste drop-off site in Parow. This announcement was made at the March sub-council meeting, but chairperson of the subcoucil, Clive Justus, apologised for the incorrect informa-

tion. “It is not the construction of the facility, but the environmental impact assessment that has commenced,” he said. The 11 932m² Beaconvale waste drop-off facility will replace the one in Tygerdal, which is anticipated to be decommissioned in near future, Justus said.

“A

t the end of the day, we let the songs write themselves.” So says vocalist and guitarist Arno Spies about his band, The Kill Heavy’s music. Having played in heavier bands before, Arno and fellow guitarist, Wiehann Geldenhuys, wanted to go back to the “bare necessities” with this album, to create music in its purest form. The two realised that although they were playing distortion driven songs, they always wrote music on acoustic guitars to begin with. The Kill Heavy started just over a year ago as an acoustic duo. They soon realised that they did need a rhythm section though, so they roped in AJ Graham on bass and Morné du Preez on drums. “I think we try to get it as raw as possible, without any type of effects,” Wiehann says of the band’s music. He and Arno write the songs themselves, but add that the rhythm section also put a lot of input into the process. They are of the view that no one in the band is above the songs.

Blood, sweat and tears The band released their debut EP titled Invisible Spaces last year, but are planning the release of their new album, Straight after Life, at the end of the month. The 12-track album will include reworked versions of some of the songs on their EP, along with seven new songs recorded with TeeJay Terblanche from Coffee Stained Vinyl. “It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but we hope the finished product will get us on the map,” Arno says. While he is aware that it sounds clichéd when artists say they write from personal experience, Arno points out that that’s what shapes a musician at the end of the day. The Kill Heavy’s music comes straight from the heart.

“A few years back, we all had to sort of give up on music for various reasons, but music never gave up on us,” Arno states. He says the emotion of being back in a band and playing music again is what fuels their songs.

Churning out the tunes Wiehann is surprised at the speed at which the band is releasing material, but says he’s happy with the sound. The band has done a lot in the year they have been together. Besides the EP, they’ve released a music video for their song ‘Hiding’, and after only two months together were finalists in the Rolling Stone Rockstarter competition. Local blogger ‘Gary Cool’ was so impressed by ‘Hiding’ that he changed his ‘single for the week’ feature immediately after hearing the song. The music video for ‘Hiding’, which conveys emotions of frustration and anger, was shot by Johnny Swanepoel in what Arno calls an “eight hour frenzy”. Johnny was at school with them and when they were looking to shoot the video, they saw that he was involved in filming with his company Gleam Studios. “We got together, brain stormed over a few beers and Wiehann came up for the basic idea for the video,” Arno explains. The band receives positive feedback wherever they go and with the help of their new album they’ll hopefully be making a considerable dent in the local scene during the coming months. “Watch out, we’re coming for you,” Arno jokes. Future maestros test music mettle Entries from junior level music students to the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition are invited by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). Now in its fourth year, the project builds on the strong foundation laid by the SA Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) 26 years ago when fledgling musicians competed on a national basis for the first time. The closing date for this year’s competition is Friday 18 April. Auditions in the main centres will commence at the beginning of June. About 60 candidates will eventually be selected to compete over four rounds at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, Cape Town, from 29 September to 3 October. Candidates will compete in four categories: piano, strings, woodwind & brass instruments, and other instruments (percussion, recorder, classical guitar and harp), with a sub-category for developmental groups. Candidates must still be 13 (14 for developmental groups) at the time of the competition. This year South African works are compulsory. “As a composer organisation, we would love to see more South African works being performed at this competition and others around the country. As we celebrate our performers, so too should we celebrate those who create uniquely South African music”, André le Roux, managing director of the SAMRO Foundation says. The competition includes an incentive for developmental groups to compete on equal terms. Medals, prize-money totalling more than R80 000, and other attractive prizes are at stake.

According to Hilda Boonzaaier, who chairs the SASMT Tygerberg, the competition has a broad appeal amongst instrumentalists across the music spectrum at junior level. “It offers participants the chance to distinguish themselves within the ambit of their own sections, and also facilitates interaction and contact between students, teachers and parents from diverse communities in South Africa. The 25th winner last year, Arjen van Renssen, happened to be a student of the very first winner in 1989, the acclaimed cellist Anzél Gerber.” André le Roux expressed his appreciation for the exceptional and inspiring performances he witnessed during the past three competitions. “SAMRO is proud to be the link between the two platforms for music excellence – the SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy Competition and the SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition, the latter now in its 53rd year of existence. “We feel privileged to be part of this trajectory of excellence in music. A number of candidates who excelled in this competition, such as Jan Hugo, Megan-Geoffrey Prins, Avigail Bushakevitz and JacquesPierre Malan, have also been highly successful in being award winners in our SAMRO Overseas Scholarships competition.” He added that SAMRO is committed through the SAMRO Foundation to support projects of excellence at many levels. Nimb sê die gevalle wat wel aangemeld word, kom onder die polisie se aandag wanneer dié meisies, maar ook nie-regeringsorganisasies, sake aanmeld. Dis óf op dié maniere, of wanneer eenhede geheime optredes by bordele doen.

Platteland “Die meeste van die meisies is van die platteland en van die Oos-Kaap. Gevalle waar meisies van Nigerië en Thailand af gebring was, is ook al aangemeld. Die meisies is gewoonlik jonk en mooi – tussen 18 en 22 jaar oud,” sê Nimb. “Hulle en hul ouers is nie bewus van die aard van die werk wat hulle kom doen nie.” Sy vertel hoe die werwing van dié meisies gewoonlik plaasvind. “Lede van die organisasies, wat gewoonlik bedryf word deur Nigeriërs, raak bevriend met plaaslike meisies, wat dan die werwing doen. Wanneer die (plattelandse) meisie dan ontnugter word, word sy toegesluit en aan dwelms blootgestel. “Hulle nader die meisies in nagklubs en

Kort voor lank dring die sindikaat dan daarop aan dat die persoon moet begin huur betaal,” sê Wilma.

Gedwing “Natuurlik het die persoon dan nie werk nie en word hy of sy dan gedwing om óf as ’n prostituut op te tree óf om as ’n ‘pimp’ (sekshandelaar) op te tree,” sê Wilma. Nimb sê indien enige slagoffer ’n strafregtelike saak van menseroof of ontvoering sou maak, word sy in ’n plek van veiligheid geplaas tot en met die verdagte(s) in hegtenis geneem is en voor die hof gebring word. “Daarna word daar met die hulp van nieregeringsorganisasies gepoog om die meisies met hul families te herenig,” sê Nimb. Ransom attacks target data Most businesses are run on computers nowdays. But using the internet to access emails, surf the internet and interact on social media sites carries the threat of attacks from malicious programmes and viruses. Ransomware, like the name suggests, is a new form of malicious software that cyber criminals are using to literally hold your computer for ransom, demanding payment for the safe return of your information, explains Roberto Caprio, MD of Dial-a-Nerd. Currently, the most dangerous ransomware programme is CryptoLocker. CryptoLocker focuses on all versions of Windows, including XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8. The infection is typically spread through emails pretending to be work related issues such as delivery requests, payment details, and so on. The email contains an .EXE attachment, disguised as a PDF file ‘PDF.EXE’, that when opened infects the computer, says Caprio. Newer attacks seem to be via Facebook where the viewer is asked to download an application to run a video. “Once the ransomware has been downloaded onto the computer it will encrypt the files and display a CryptoLocker payment programme on the screen, demanding a ransom be paid to decrypt the files. “Once payment is received the files will be decrypted, although this is not 100% guaranteed,” Caprio warns. CryptoLocker affects local files on the computer as well as files on ‘mapped’ drives can also be affected (files that have been given a drive letter such as D; E; F). These files could be on an external hard drive, folder on a network or a document in the Cloud. If you have your Dropbox folder, for example, mapped locally, it could encrypt those files as well. There actions you can take to protect your computer against CryptoLocker. V Backup your data. “Backing up your data is the most important practice you can do and will keep your data safe in a number of situations. “We suggest that you make backing up your data part of your daily regime. Backing up to the Cloud is a simple and automated process that will provide huge peace of mind

In the event of ransomware attack, being able to restore a recent backup will mean few of your documents will be lost. V Install a reputable security protection programme. V Show hidden file extensions: Because Microsoft does not show extensions by default, all the attachments from CryptoLocker look like normal PDF files. By re-enabling the ability to see the full file-extension and it will be easier to spot suspicious files. V Always keep your software up to date. Malware authors pounce on users running outdated software as they are aware of the weaknesses, which they abuse in order to attack your system. Malware authors can disguise their creations as software update notifications. Enable automatic updates, but possibly double check the software vendor’s website to make sure they are legitimate. V Disconnect from the WiFi or unplug from the network immediately if you think your computer might have been infected but the CryptoLocker screen hasn’t appeared. Disconnecting from the network may interrupt the encryption process and save some of your files.

Options for young job-seekers Matriculants who have been looking for work or new study opportunities since leaving school should not lose hope. A post-school opportunities seminar hosted by the Youth Unemployment Prevention Project (YUPP) aims to assist school-leavers and young job-seekers to access new opportunities. “Attendees will be able to apply for further study, vocational and occupational programmes, bursaries, experiential learning, employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship opportunities,” said Faiez Dollie, the project coordinator and volunteer at YUPP. Dollie said bursaries are available for various courses that are still on offer for 2014, and attendees can apply for these at the se-

minar. “Presenters will advise attendees about the various training opportunities still available for 2014, how to access these opportunities, and how to apply for jobs,” he said. “The Seminar is being held in Bellville due to numerous requests from youth seeking assistance with opportunities from this area.” The Seminar will be held at the Northlink College’s Protea Campus in Voortrekker Road, Bellville on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00 to 17:00. Senior golfers swing cash to Cansa

The seniors at the Durbanville Golf Club hosted their fourth Sanlam Cancer Golf Day last Friday, raising about R60 000 in their first three golf days. On Friday they managed to raise R35 120 for cancer research. Several items were on auction and the golfers dug deep into their pockets for this worthy cause. Children hooked on fishing Another successful Western Cape Shore Angling Association schools mini league season has come to an end. Attendance was great, and 78 school children and women from across the Cape Town region fished at least one event. The schools mini league was introduced in the 2011/2012 season, and the third season just ended with the third and final league event in Struisbaai on 23 March. Although the weather didn’t play along, and the fishing was tough, PG Groenewald (6) did manage a bellman of 51cm, and Claire Campher a sand shark of 91cm. The first two events were held at Dwarskersbos on the West Coast. The league comprises three events, with the main focus on getting school children and women involved in shore angling. in Struisbaai, which have safe beaches and numerous fish. The categories are divided into age groups, and again into assisted and non-assisted. Assisted allows bait to be put on and cast for the younger anglers. Some 78 registrations were received from children across the peninsula, with 62 recording fish on their cards. The winning number for the first event was 20 fish and 17 fish for the second. During the three events, some 413 fish were caught by the little anglers. The prize giving was held at Langezandt after the event, with Stefan Engelbrecht, development officer of the WCSAA, handing all participant a certificate, as well as medals to the category winners. The next mini league season starts in October.

Women run for smiles Nearly 20 000 women are expected to line up for the start of the Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Race Grand Prix series on Sunday 6 April. Both the 10km and 5km races start in Fritz Sonnenburg Street next to the Greenpoint Track, and end in the Forecourt next to the Cape Town Stadium. The 10km starts at 07:30 amd the 5km at 08:00. Women of all ages and fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to take part in the Cape’s biggest women’s race. Instore entries have closed, but you can still enter online at www.spar.co.za at a cost of R75. The first 21 000 entrants to collect their race numbers at the the Cape Town stadium - the registration venue - will each receive a free t-shirt and goodie bag. Registration is on Friday 4 April (08:00 to 19:00) and Saturday 5 April (08:00 to 17:00).

Late entries cost R85 and will be taken at the registration venue on Friday 4 April. Besides over R58 000 worth of position prizes there will be plenty of lucky draw prizes for those who stay for the prize-giving after the race, where loads of entertainment is lined up. The main lucky draw prize is Spar vouchers to the value of R18 000. The first 21 000 finishers will earn a Spar Women’s Challenge medal. Participants will once again be helping a child to smile. The IFBB Western Province bodybuilding and fitness federation year starts on Saturday with the SSN Cape Classic at the CPUT Bellville South campus. In terms of the number of athletes competing and spectators supporting the local shows, last year was one of the best. This year promises to again break record numbers. Kevin Schwartz, President of IFBB Western Province, is taking the sport to new heights with interesting developments taking place this year, as many companies are now wanting to be part of this great success. As a result the prize money for division and overall winners in June’s Battle of the Titans II has increased substantially, catching the attention of many new competitors from across South Africa, and abroad. The SSN Cape Classic is known as a stepping stone for newcomers to the sport, with the men’s novice u-75kg and over 75kg divisions, new beach and fitness novice divisions. There has been a lot of interest in the new men’s athletic physique division, along with ladies beach bikini, fitness bikini, body fitness, fitness and physique line-ups. There will also be overall line-ups for the men, best men’ routine, women’s beach bikini, fitness bikini and ms personality. Athletes’ pre-judging starts at 11:00 at R80 per person. The main show starts at 18:00 at R120 per person. Children under 12 are charged R40 for pre-judging and R60 for the main
