Children’s home gets a bit of early Christmas cheer The Art of Christmas lights up Christmas at Durbanville Children’s Home. The one thing all children wish for at Christmas time is a Christmas tree. With everyone’s mind racing towards Christmas and all the excitement around this special time of the year, the less fortunate are often forgotten. The Art of Christmas, an exclusive Christmas-dedicated pop-up store in Willowbridge, donated a beautifully decorated Christmas tree to the Durbanville Children’s Home. What joy it was to watch the children’s faces light up at the sight of their own Christmas tree! Donations to the home are always welcome. Contact them on 021 975 6822 or visit www.durbanvillekinderhuis.org.za. Art of Christmas in Willowbridge is one of four stores that opened their doors in the Cape for the first time this year. Everything you ever imagined to create a festive look and ambience is available – amazing ranges of Christmas trees, swags, garlands and décor, among several other shiny wonders. Matrics, make the holiday count As the end of the matric exams begin to near, thousands of school-leavers are starting to fantasise about the imminent December holidays and, more specifically, indulging in a whole lot of nothing-but-fun. But these summer days do not all have to be lazy and can in fact be used to give you a head-start in 2013. There are so many activities which could provide you with the frame of mind, help develop an effective approach to life, or equip you with skills that could set you apart in the highly competitive post-school environment you are about to enter: V Learn to type with all 10 fingers. From now on most of what you do will be on a keyboard, and the quicker you can type, the more you can get done. So head off to www.rapidtyping.com or other sites where you’ll find free downloads. V Learn to drive or do your driver’s licence. V Open a file to start collecting your certificates and reference letters. V Look for an opportunity to make a bit of money. Sell your time, work with a party organiser, offer to wrap gifts or do Christmas shopping, or do some house-, pet- or baby-sitting during the day. V If you are creative or quite handy, repair your clothing or update them with a contemporary twist. V Help out at places where volunteers have

gone on leave. V Read a book and start reading newspapers. Being informed and well-read will never hurt your chances. V Spend quality time with family and friends. Everything changes when you start studying, but the relationships that will hold you up when things are tough are the ones you should nurture now. V Sort through your school books and give some away. But keep those you may need next year. V Clean out your cupboards and give stuff away. Getting rid of the old (for a good cause) frees up space for wonderful new things to enter your life. V Create a photo album or scrap book of your matric year. If you don’t do it now, you never will. V Update the contacts on your phone and save them on to a computer. If you want to keep in touch with friends that you will not see so often any more, don’t trust their details to a phone that may get stolen. V Surprise everyone and write a thank you note to the teachers who got you this far and the family that supported you. It is said that people who actively engage in gratitude are generally happier. V Study the maps of the campus you are going to and of the town if you are moving. V Do a free on-line course. Because it’s good for you… and it’s free!
