A memorable sendoff for Hugo STEHAN SCHOEMAN

After 19 years of competitive golf, Hugo du Toit describes his final round on the Old Course St Andrews as “the perfect sendoff” to an incredible journey. Du Toit, who plays off a 12 handicap with one arm, placed 24th out

of 75 competitors. “This was my last World One-arm Open Championships. After hitting my tee shot on the first and walking down the fairway I was very emotional,” he said. This year golfers from 27 countries played in this the 75th edition of the tournament which was originally founded to accommodate soldiers wounded in World War I. “To play my last competitive round of golf on the most famous golf course in the world, was truly

a special moment that I will treasure for the rest of my life,” he said. Du Toit is disabled in the left side of his body. He won the South African One-arm Championship in 1998, 1999 and 2003. With treacherous winds and rain and icy cold weather, conditions were less than ideal. “If the course isn’t difficult enough we had to battle the elements as well. The rough is very thick and deep and some of those bunkers are almost unplayable.

“Holes 12 through 15 are very difficult, to say the least. I can tell you that the 15th hole par 5 is the most difficult I’ve ever played and I have played some very tricky courses around the world. “The ground is so hard it is very difficult to take a divot. The bounce and roll is something to behold over there. It is nothing for me to hit a 7 iron from 180 metres out. “I remember on this one par 3 I was thinking of hitting an iron into the green. The caddy just shook his

head and said ‘take the old kitchen sink’ referring to my driver. I barely got there. “I think it was on the eighth hole as I bent over to repair my pitchmark, I hurt my back that has given me problems in the past. After I hit my putt I just had to lie down and stretch my back out. “All I was saying to myself was that this is my last round and that I have to pull through. As I walked of the 18th with one of the best 83’s I ever shot I thought to myself I gave it my best shot today.” he said.
