POLICING: NATIONAL STATISTICS REVEAL WORRYING TRENDS
Keeping ’em in stitches
Crime in Parow is on the rise MAGRIET THERON @magrietron
C
rime in Parow is officially on the rise, according to the national crime statistics for 2014 released by national police commissioner Riah Phiyega last week. The figures were for the period between 1 March 2013 to 28 February 2014. The total number of crimes reported for Parow in 2014 was 7704, almost 600 more than 2013. It is also the highest in ten years (see graph on page 2). Crimes that are heavily dependent on police action have dropped from 650 in 2013 to 620 this year. These crimes include drug related crimes, the unlawful possession of firearms, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and are only recorded once an arrest is made. “That means it is a good sign when the figures rise because those are the arrests made. All other statistics are based on cases that were reported at the station,” said Parow police spkesperson W/O Jacques Mostert. In 2004 the number of arrests in this category recorded was 124 and it peaked in 2012 with 1017 cases (see graph on page 2).

Murder capital Sub-categories forming part of aggravated robbery like carjacking, hijacking and robbery at residential and non residential properties almost doubled from last year. The figure is now at 89, whereas it remained under 20 cases per year from 2004 to 2007. In 2008 this figure started rising. Lizette Lancaster, analyst at the Institute for Security studies (ISS), said between April 2011 and March 2012, police recorded more murders in Cape Town than in Johannesburg and Pretoria combined. “This means Cape Town residents are almost twice (1.8 times) as likely to be murdered than Johannesburg residents. “We also need to improve our service delivery to the communities...we need to improve our police stations,” she said. The Western Cape saw the biggest increase in murders countrywide in 2014. Murder, attempted murder and common robbery increased countrywide over the last financial year. V To page 2.

Contact crimes Contact crimes and contact related crimes have risen from 1652 cases in 2013 to 1797 in 2014. This category has seen a steady increase since 2009 when it was at its lowest for the past ten years at 1214 cases. Property related crimes have risen to 3016, from 2732 last year. This figure is almost double what it was in 2008. Other serious crimes, including commercial crime and shoplifting, increased from
2611 cases in 2013 to 2726 in 2014, but compared to figures over the past ten years, show a downward trend. Other crime categories, including culpable homicide, public violence, crimen injuria, neglect and the ill-treatment of children, and kidnapping, decreased from 108 cases in 2013 to 76 in 2014. This is also the lowest it has been in the past decade. Although kidnapping has gone up from five cases last year to 12 this year, there were no reported cases this year of neglect and ill-treatment of children.
