COMING OUT FOR SUMMER: DON’T KILL, CALL WRANGLER

Watch out for snakes RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

W

ith the summer season upon us many people will be making their way to the icy waters to cool off. So too will some of mother nature’s slithering creatures. This time of the year it is common for snakes to make their appearance in, or near residential homes – mostly those with sufficient shade or swimming pools for the animals to cool off in.

Kelvin Irvine, member of the Monte Vista and Plattekloof Glen Ratepayers and Residents Association, last week sent out a warning to residents to be on the lookout for them. Irvine tried to save a juvenile Cape cobra from the street last week when a car drove over it, killing it. “If you encounter a snake on your property please do not kill it, but rather contact me or the neighbourhood watch or a certified snake handler to remove it safely. “Snakes do not attack, their first line of de-

fence is to escape and secondly to scare,” Irvine pleaded with residents on the organisation’s social media page. Renier Smith, a registered and permitted snake wrangler, says there are a few things people should do, and not do when confronted by a snake. “Never approach the snake and always remove pets and children to prevent unfortunate encounters and incidents. “Try your best to keep eyes on the snake to make the snake wranglers’ job easier to find, catch and relocate the snake.

“Try and take photos of the snake to assist the snake wrangler to make a positive identification, as it could assist with additional cautionary measures and feedback to residents and lastly advise snake wranglers soonest to allow them to get to the site or request alternative authorised persons to assist,” he says. Smith says they have recently encountered a lot of mole snakes which are non-venomous, but can inflict a nasty bite, and Cape cobras which are highly venomous, on callouts.
