Projek gaan gestremdes help MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Bigger, better, Kleinmond blues A host of local blues names will be taking over Kleinmond in March for the Big Blues Music Festival. Organisers are determined to offer a bigger and better show this year, with an even stronger lineup of SA’s most talented blues musicians on one stage over the weekend. Firm favourites like Boulevard Blues Band, Dan Patlansky and the Blues Broers will perform again, alongside blues songbirds such as Natasha Meister, Charlie King and Monique de Jager. There are some surprises in the line-up such as Vusi Mahlasela who will highlight the roots of blues and will certainly inspire. Bands from up north like The Black Cat Bones, Southern Gypsy Queen and the legendary Piet

Botha and the Lyzyrd Kyngs will also be part of the action. Crowd pleaser, Gerald Clark will perform with Henry Steel Jnr and Peter Hoven as Tony and the Trailer Cats, who will have just returned from their American tour, invited by The International Blues Challenge in Memphis to take part in the biggest blues event on the American calendar. And as if that’s not enough, the festival takes place in the spectacularly upgraded Kleinmond Harbour, with restaurants, bars and interesting shops in the adjacent Harbour Road. Partnering with Paul Bothner Music, the festival will offer a guitar workshop and vocal workshop for aspiring blues musicians, hosted by two of the most popular art-

ists. The festival will once again offer value for money packages and offers include accommodation, entry to the area’s major tourist attractions and a range of additional discounts. General festival facilities include a 1 050 square metre marquee for shade, safe parking, a buddy-bus to get you safely home, a kiddies’ club, arts stalls and more. Cabins epitome of ecofriendly CERRIN HENDRICKS

“Here we can forget the trouble of the city life and enjoy the nature that the Cape has to offer.” This is what Professor Aubrey Redlinghuis had to say at the opening of the Oudebosch cabins at Kogelberg Nature Reserve last Friday. The cabins are the result of several years of planning to create an eco-friendly tourism offering in the Western Cape, and boast wise water usage, low carbon emissions, and indigenous plants to ensure that tourists and locals alike can enjoy the natural beauty of the Cape. Anton Bredell, the provincial minister of local government, environmental affairs and development planning, gave a speech and thanked all those involved in the planning and development of the cabins. “We need to all take steps to ensure that our children can enjoy nature in the future,” said Bredell, adding that, “From today onwards all the people of the Western Cape can enjoy this pristine Heart of The Cape Floral Kingdom in style.” The new cabin area also contains South Africa’s first commercial Eco Pool, which uses no chemicals, and filters through a

Other innovations include solar water geysers and high efficiency appliances, which make each cabin use around two kilowatts of energy per day, which is about 10 percent less than the average South African household. Water usage is also being kept to a minimum, with low-flow showers and composting eco toi-

lets being used. The entire setup will also create jobs for the entire area, and employees will be hired from Kleinmond and other local areas. “We have gone completely local with this project, from the construction phase to the operation of the reserve and cabins. In the future we would like to continue doing this,” said Redlinghuis.

The Blues Broers will be part of the lineup at this year’s Big Blues Music Festival.
