PARTNERSHIP: BANKS AND CITY

New access to housing

ANDRÉ BAKKES

T

he times of low to middle income earners being unable to afford a house might soon be a thing of the past if the City of Cape Town can partner with more banks and provide affordable housing opportunities. Last week the city officially launched a new affordable housing development in Brooklyn called Silver Meadows. It will target those who earn from R13 000

upwards per month. The chairperson of the Portfolio for Human Settlements, James Slabbert, elaborates: “My son earns about R15 000 a month. He can’t get a house! “The city mostly only caters for the market below R3 000 a month. The Housing Institution, such as Communicare, provide social housing, but up until recently nobody catered for the market between R3 000 to R15 000. We are providing a subsidy from government, so in effect they are getting a

very nice house at let’s say R100 000, yet in effect it is worth R300 000.” The partner in the Silver Meadows project is Nedbank and in another project in Maitland (where 300 units are provided) the partner is Standard Bank.

Inspired Slabbert hopes that the involvement of these banks could inspire others to also get on board. “We won’t force them, we will be part-

ners,” he adds before continuing: “There is a need for people to move upwards! Ravensmead residents moves into Parow, Parow to Welgelegen, Welgelegen into Plattekloof. We must provide people mobility.” Silver Meadows will consist of 115 units made up of 16 one-bedroom apartments, 76 two-bedroom units, and 23 three-bedroom, semi-detached homes. Each unit will be spaced out and will have an allocated parking bay. V To page 2.

Educators to lead the way The third Community of Learning Principals (CoLP) session for the year will be held at the School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape on Tuesday 28 May between 15:00 and 17:00. This initiative, established in June 2011, is a value adding platform which facilitates meaningful information sharing between educators and business leaders. It was formed as principals are continuously challenged in their role as leaders of a school community. The current education landscape in South Africa is varied and dynamic, requiring senior level educators to display various personal and professional skills to lead the way as thought leaders, innovators and change agents in their schools. The session offers a choice of three topics. V To book, phone Melissa on 021 913 3507, fax 021 913 3187 or email melissa@symphonia.net.

Mayoral committee member for human settlements, Tandeka Gqada, said at the sod turning last week: “Silver Meadows is well suited to young families and new couples as it is right next to a well-kept park. This is the kind of space in which our children deserve to be growing up – safe, green and with necessary amenities close by.” It is on the main Koeberg route and is one block from the IRT bus route to Otto du Plessis Drive. Century City is only 8 km away and it is roughly a 10 minute drive to other major centres, including the CBD. “Hopefully, as this development rolls out and more affordable homes are created, we will see more projects of this kind in the years ahead. “We are pleased that Nedbank has partnered with us in this scheme and have said they will grant 100 % bonds to applicants who meet the banks’ lending criteria. For their invaluable contribution on this project they must be applauded.” Ward councillor Bernadette le Roux says she will watch the progress of this project very keenly. She concludes: “Catering for ‘gap housing’ is a very new concept and the city is once again at the forefront of this innovative

Domestic violence support Domestic violence is a problem that is plaguing our society, with more and more cases being reported to the police each month in the Table View area. As part of the 100 days of activism campaign initiated by the police to end violence against women and children, further efforts are being made to create awareness about domestic violence. After much planning and collaboration, the Community Intervention Centre (CIC), under the auspices of SADAG (the South Af-

rican Depression and Anxiety Group) and in conjunction with Table View police, started up a support group for victims of domestic violence. The first group meeting was held in the police station’s trauma room recently and on the evening only three women turned up – even though over 50 women have been contacted. These women have reported cases of domestic violence in the last few months. At the first meeting, two issues were high-

lighted: these women feel that talking about their problem doesn’t help, and they need drastic action taken to protect their lives. The women also feel that the legal system has failed them. They feel that a protection order has no value, because they suffer brutal beatings at the hands of their perpetrators, even with the protection order in place. This pattern forms part of a vicious cycle where victims return to abusive relationships. Two of the main reasons for this pattern are fear and finances.

Ride MyCiTi buses for free on Sunday On Sunday 2 June trips will be free all day for passengers travelling on all MyCiTi routes. This is being done to celebrate the second anniversary of this very popular service. Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater elaborates: “The free rides are a way of

thanking all of our passengers for taking the bus. Each one of you has played an important role in making the service a success. We also want to encourage new passengers from across Cape Town to try out MyCiTi, to get a taste of what is to come as the service expands.” He urges everyone to bring their friends

Sean van Wyk, who has been homeschooled since Grade 1 by his mother, Fiona, was placed third in literacy in South Africa in the same category of the competition last

year. He then also received a medal and certificate for his achievement. “This year he was incredibly motivated again and was determined to do better than last year,” said his mother. Great was their surprise when they received his medal and certificate, informing

Wilskrag laat Cindy goue medaljes wen JANA BEKKER Cindy Jacobsz van Boston glo as ’n mens regtig iets wil doen, kán jy. (“Argus eindig seer”, TygerBurger 21 Maart).

huis in Boston.

Wikipedia helps local learners four cellphone companies in South Africa saying they had heard that in some other African countries such as Kenya and Uganda certain cellphone providers were offering their customers free access to Wikipedia and requesting they do likewise for South Africa. None of the cellphone companies responded, but their letter did get picked up on the internet by Wikipedia Zero Team staff (Wikipedia’s global outreach programme that aims to get internet and cellphone service providers to waive data charges for Wikipedia users). Victor Grigas, a story teller with the Wikimedia Foundation, who is in South Africa with his camerawoman Charlene Music, said that this was the first time they

Funds needed for new home The non-profit organisation currently based in Milnerton, Boyes Helping Hands, is looking to raise funds for a Transition Centre where abused women and children can find refuge. A property in the Morning Star area, with a hectare of land can be purchased in the vicinity of R1 950 000. Founder and CEO of Boyes Helping Hands, Deborah Boyes, and her husband will be putting the proceeds of the sale of their home into the purchase of this land, so they need to raise another R550 000 to be able to purchase the identified property. Says Boyes: “A dwelling already established on the land. This is an advantage as it makes plumbing and electrical far easier when the building of the cottages for the abused women and children begins. This land has already been levelled

out, is established with fencing and is quiet, peaceful and tranquil. This is just what we have been looking for. It is situated in the midst of an equestrian haven and we plan to use the horses as therapy for the women and children. Doing so is wonderful for occupational therapy and also for children.” Having come from an abusive background herself, Boyes understands the need for a place such as this. On this land there will be six three bedroomed cottages housing six people per cottage, a house-mother, a chapel, a workshop where lessons in computer literacy, photography, various arts and crafts and sports will be available to teach the ladies to be self-sustaining. V Boyes can be contacted on 071 328 0124 or at debbie@boyeshelpinghands.co.za. Go to www.boyeshelpinghands.co.za for information.

School pregnancy and HIV targeted In the last survey done in 2009, 45 276 school girls were reported pregnant. Of these, 109 were in Grade 8 alone. To address this critical issue, the Connect-Ed team of ambassadors recently visited Scottsville High School. Connect-Ed is a high school campaign which aims to reduce the transmission of HIV and STIs and unplanned pregnancies among youth in South Africa. Sarika Modi, manager of Connect-Ed says: “The lack of safe sexual practices among youth leaves sub-saharan Africa as a region with the highest rates of HIV and STIs in the world.” The campaign has some serious messages to youth, who are encouraged to abstain – this is safest; plan ahead – for safer sex, take responsibility and ask for support. O

Dié voertuig is later verlate gevind. New cancer scanner at Tygerberg ROWENA HENDRICKS

T

he Cancer Treatment Centre at Tygerberg Hospital got a double boost recently with the official opening of a brand new computer tomography unit at the hospital. The Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, launched the new R6.1 million Big Bore CT Scanner, the first in an institution in South Africa, and the newly upgraded Cancer Research and Training Centre at the hospital. At the opening Botha said the benefit of the new CT scanner and newly renovated centre, is that it will take less time for more accurate planning and treatment of cancer. “This will result in a higher probability to provide a curative treatment regimen, with fewer side effects to surrounding normal tissue,” says Botha.

Accuracy According to Dr Magda Heunis, clinical head of Radiation Oncology at Tygerberg Hospital, the new CT scanner is a more sophisticated machine than normal scanners used thus far in the planning of treatment for cancer patients. “The new Big Bore CT Scanner will help tremendously in planning more accurately for radiation treatment in cancer patients to treat the cancerous tissue in a patient and cause as little as possible damage to normal tissue,” says Heunis. The Philips CT Scanner has the largest available tunnel to accommodate the patient to be scanned in the exact treatment position. The patient can be set up with the stabilisation devices used during treatment and CT scanned in the exact same way. This improves reproducibility of patient set up and improves productivity and patient throughput. The main benefit of the multi-million rand scanner to the public is that the 16 slice CT

5

is capable of respiratory gating, which improves for example lung tumour delineation by determining the movement of the tumour in the lung while the patient is breathing. This Big Bore CT scanner is also the only equipment in the country that can help suitable patients with lung cancer undergoing curative radiation therapy either alone or in combination with chemotherapy. “The public will benefit from the newly installed CT scanner by receiving more accurate planning of treatment in a fraction of the time that previously was required. More accurate planning will result in a higher probability to provide a curative treatment regimen, with fewer side effects to surrounding normal tissue,” says Dr Heunis. The newly upgraded Cancer Research and Training Centre includes: comfortable and modern area for registrar education; computer room for research; rest area for visiting lecturers; and high-quality conference facilities.

Training “The new ‘teaching and research block’ will further emphasise our commitment towards excellence in the two respective fields. “Our responsibility remains ever growing due to the fact that the Division of Radiation Oncology is the single South African Regionally Designated Centre (RDC) authorised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations (UN) body dealing with nuclear energy. “As such, we train and educate a large number of foreign supernumerary registrars in clinical and radiation oncology from numerous African countries,” says Prof Branislav Jeremic, head of Radiation Oncology. According to statistics more than 2 000 new patients are treated at the Tygerberg radiation and clinical oncology per year, which include all types of cancer such as gynaecological, lung, skin, sarcomas, etc.

Invitation to free workshop on legal issues The Legal Independent People’s Corporation (LIPCO) has decided to take the law to the people with the launch of Legal People’s Workshops. For an entire week, from 27 May, South Africans from different provinces, of which Western Cape is one, will receive free workshops to help with any legal questions they

might have. “Getting to understand how you are protected legally at your work place, in your marriage, as a citizen, etc. is perceived as complicated and expensive and that’s why LIPCO has decided to hold the workshops,” said Simone Steinmair, legal mediator from LIPCO.

“It comes as no surprise considering the horrific Marikana shooting in August last year, with the death of 34 platinum miners still under investigation, constant strikes for wage increases...” said Steinmair. Steinmair believes the fact that experts warn that strikes will eventually lead to fewer entrepreneurs, fewer jobs, less invest-

ment by foreign investors and an overall worse-off economy is not enough reason not to strike. South Africa has the worst employer-labour relations in the world according to the World Economic Forum. Family travels around world in 13 years

Honderde kilometer later is sy weer afgelaai by haar huisie in Atlantis – vol dankbaarheid en splinternuwe herinneringe. “Ooo! Dit was só spesiaal! Toe ek 12 jaar oud was, het ek my eerste paar skoene gekry. “Ek is nou amper té opgewonde, want ek gaan na my wêreld! As ek tog net kon gestap het.

“Ek moes varkhokke was, skaap oppas, gans oppas, vark oppas! Ek verlang egter elke dag! Dis my plek! My trane en my sweet lê daar.” Sy was baie sterk.

A bit nutty but very generous

ANDRÉ BAKKES The nifty Nutty Knitters don’t just knit. They commit to a cause, knit till they’re knackered and then they donate it to the deprived. The latest beneficiaries of this non-profit organisation (known as Nutty Knitters) were 97 elderly people at Huis Zonnekus. Each of the knitters knitted knee rugs, a beanie and bed socks and then last week these were handed over to the grateful residents. According to the woman who inspired Nutty Knitters, Melodie Potgieter, it took the group of dedicated members two months to complete the project. “All of this happened in spite of me, not because of me,” laughs Melodie. They have helped many others with knitted material and even foodstuff, so the residents at Huis Zonnekus might’ve felt left out. But the wait was worth it, since the 80 members really excelled themselves in the art of knitting and caring. And they certainly had a skinnering time getting there! Says Melodie: “My husband always says that when we meet at the Lions Club in Mil-

nerton then it’s like 500 on the Richter scale due to the noise! They laugh and chat and enjoy themselves tremendously. We meet every second Saturday because I need my sanity!” Members from all over the northern suburbs will knit at these meetings and then

knit at home – sometimes with donated wool and sometimes with their own. After all, to give brings pride, but to knit and then give brings pride and joy. V For more information about the Nutty Knitters one can contact Melodie on 021 557 9661 or on 082 877 5431.

Have a good laugh for a good cause If laughter is the best medicine what better way to sweeten the prescription than by supporting a good cause? Capetonians have the perfect opportunity to laugh their heads off for charity by attending a special performance for the Arch at the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival on 12 June at the Baxter Theatre. All proceeds from the show will go to the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation to support projects empowering women and girls. “The manner in which society treats girls and young women is no laughing matter,” says executive director of the Foundation, Rev Mpho Tutu. “But to laugh is to be human, it is part of the joy of life. We invite our friends to join us in our quest to instill a sense of optimism about the potential of South African youth – particularly its girls, the future nurturers

N1 City Mall has invited various Goodwood schools to participate in a second N1 City Mall activation. The activation, called the “Litter to Glitter” student competition, will focus on teaching the children about the value of “caring”, with a special focus on caring for our environment through recycling. As a centre, N1 City Mall places a strong internal emphasis on recycling. In 2012 the centre recycled 5 971 litres of waste. During this competition that leads up to Youth Day (on Sunday 16 June), students have been asked to either decorate, or create, fashion items made from recycled materials. The recycled entries will be created during two in-centre workshops, held on Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June. All activities will culminate in the centre on 13 to 18 June during N1 City Mall’s “City Fashion Week”. Here the student creations will be displayed, along with the latest tenant fashions. The public will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourite “Litter To Glitter” student creation and win a R4 000 make-over. TygerBurger scoops top local media awards Top honours were again this year bestowed on TygerBurger at the 2012 MDDA-Sanlam local media awards, which were held in Johannesburg on Friday night. This prestigious competition recognises and rewards distinction in local print and broadcasting media. More than 500 entries were received in this year’s competition and reflected the laudable work being done on all levels of local media. TygerBurger walked away with two coveted awards as well as two nominations. The first in the writing category of hard news, was scooped by senior journalist Desireé Rorke. According to judges, a large number of high-quality entries were received in this category leaving them faced with a challenge when it came to short listing candidates. Judges described Rorke’s reporting style as “…good journalism in terms of ethics, fairness and accuracy alongside style and language.” In addition TygerBurger walked away with the award for best front-page in the corporate owned free sheets category. Winning covers were described by judges

as having the ability to instil a sense of curiosity in a potential reader and have him or her ask, “What’s happening here?” That’s exactly what the paper achieved with its winning front page in the Milnerton edition for 30 May 2012. TygerBurger photographer Carina Roux was nominated as a top three finalist in two categories, being features and portraits and press photographer of the year. Finalists in these categories produced photographs of exceptional quality and Roux’s photos stood out for their artistic skill and flair. “…Sanlam believes local media plays an important role to educate, inform and thereby achieve transparency in communities. The company is therefore proud to again be part of the prestigious MDDA-Sanlam Local Media Awards,” said Sanlam group chief executive Johan van Zyl. Chief executive officer of the MDDA (Media Development and Diversity Agency) said: “Access to information empowers citizens and assists in advancing the country’s democracy…We must ensure responsible journalism and that our media is transformed to reflect South Africa in every respect.”

Illegal dragsters bust drunk driving The City of Cape Town Traffic Services arrested 61 suspects for illegal drag-racing and drunk driving this weekend. Women take back their place ANDRÉ BAKKES

Young women and girls of Brooklyn and surrounds enjoy one of the Queen Esther Project workshops at the Old Day Hospital.

Empowering women & girls Yet again the Queen Esther Project is sweeping through the community of Brooklyn, Rugby and Maitland with music, dances and fashion. The well-designed show entertains and empowers girls in the community. Following two successful shows hosted last year, the Queen Esther team members are bracing themselves for a bigger and exiting event this year. They have double the number of participants this year. This year’s programme focuses on achieving tangible results in line with their vision of empowering despondent young women and girls to be role models and leaders in their communities. The two-month training kicked off on a high note on 13 April at the old Day Hospital building in Justin Street, Brooklyn.

Workshops to date have covered subjects such as goal setting, basics of public speaking and interview techniques, community upliftment and youth entrepreneurship. Other subjects include health and hygiene, sexual education, life skills, coaching, rape and self defence, HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, selfesteem and body image, human rights and community participation. Anyone can attend the workshop free of charge every Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00. The Esther Project team believe that this year training will have a very positive impact in the above communities. V For more information on how to assist or be a volunteer in this project contact Karen Kwalie on 073 567 5932.

“Woman take back your place!” This was the theme during Youth on the Move (YoM) and Milnerton police’s event at the station this Saturday. YoM CEO, Maggie Griffiths, elaborates: “I coined the phrase ‘woman take back your place’ because some women have given up on life and don’t see any other way than to keep living their lives the way they are presently.” Domestic violence is a scourge of the country and the Milnerton police precinct is no different. This disturbing fact inspired Griffiths and the local police to host a day jam-packed with discussions, music, games and prizes. Griffiths continues: “Rozanne Visagie from Save the Rhino and Debra Bouwer sang for us and Camps Bay Christian Life Church delivered the Word of God and the community police forum’s chairperson, Leon du Preez

was one of those who talked. “Egoli actress Chanelle de Jager (aka Des) was also there to brighten up the day. The focus fell, of course, on women who have endured domestic violence. Many who shared their experience have experienced the trauma of abuse. One woman was raped for hours and then stabbed 22 times... She is the victor today!” Griffiths reckons the programme had a very positive impact on those who attended. Apparently the tears rolled, but she maintains the belief that domestic violence victims will “stand up” once again. YoM is a registered organisation working with, among others, youth and substance abusers by assisting them with rehabilitation. YoM also assists families with foodstuffs, clothing and financing, so they regularly depend on sponsors. V Contact Maggie Griffiths on 082 462 0279 or at grifmags@gmail.com. A child goes missing every six hours Children are the most precious gift one could ever receive. Therefore, when a child gets hurt or worse even, dies, all of us are in mourning. Just the idea of losing a child, is enough to drive any decent parent absolutely crazy. Children shouldn’t die; they also shouldn’t experience the dark, cruel side of life. Children should be loved and protected and therefore free to play and explore in safety. This week is National Child Protection Week in South Africa. And it’s not only about protecting our children against physical dangers that is in the spotlight. It’s also about protecting our children against abuse, verbal or physical. It’s about keeping our eyes open to read the signs of sexual abuse or drug use. It’s about informing and educating them about the dangers of life, while instilling solid values and open communication. It’s also about keeping them safe from getting lost. In South Africa a child goes missing every six hours, adding up to 1 460 children per year. More than 87 % are found within the first week – 13 % are lost forever, some to child trafficking which is very real in South Africa. According to Unicef, 1,2 million children worldwide are being trafficked every year and sold for either forced, cheap labour or sexual exploitation. Without this paralysing us with fear, let’s rather just do everything to protect our children – they are the most precious things we will ever own.

ANONIEM Epos

How many cyclist deaths will it take? The recent deaths of cyclists are worrisome. (“Man doodgery by skool”, TygerBurger, 22 May) Cycling is a preferred sport and recreation for many. But the risk of injury and even death has made it a contact sport. During the past two years I had the opportunity to ride in some foreign countries. In Europe and New Zealand I was warned by friends that cyclists are sacrosanct. So much as touch a cyclist with your vehicle and you are in for the high jump. Why can it not be the same here? I submit that we fail on two

scores: First, we have a general disregard for the law in this country. But that aside, people do not respect laws, and hence each other, any more. If we make a law that a distance of 1,5 meters from any cyclist should be maintained, will people respect it? Not a chance, as things are now. And cyclists should start to behave too. A few are affecting the rest of us. The second point is that we are just not interested in what happens outside our vehicles. Forget about teaching learner drivers to swivel their heads around like poppies in the wind. Teach them to observe other road users instead. In order to be proactive. A friend failed his European driver’s test because he passed too close to a pedestrian standing at the side of the road. How many more deaths will it take? Build us some decent cycling roads, for heaven’s sake! THEO Email

Children should use crossing properly Don Sheasby from Rugby provides an emotional argument, “Young or Free Flowing Traffic?”, TygerBurger, 22 May. I present a logical one. The tragic death of Esther Kalenga is a result of anarchy and stupidity. Child gets knocked over by taxi. Was this unexpected? Why are young children permitted to walk about in a major arterial road without being alert to the very real probability of being killed or maimed by a taxi? A few metres away from the crossing where this young girl was killed is a pedestrian traffic light. Ironically, the children walk past this light (after they have crossed) and randomly press the button disrupting the traffic for the second time. These children should be

compelled to cross the road at that point. A little further in the other direction are more traffic lights providing further opportunity to cross. This illogical system must take some of the blame for this fatality. Installing speed bumps will disrupt traffic, increase pollution levels, congestion, travel times, and waste fuel. We cannot disrupt the economic activity of hundreds of thousands of people so that children can occupy the road in a random ill-disciplined fashion. Pedestrians have superior rights in traffic but the children must be disciplined, orderly and aware. PD BOTHA Brooklyn

Complaints about road to deaf ears The taxis do see them, believe me! (“Traffic light’s high price”, TygerBurger, 15 May) We have a crossing for our children in Boundary Road Milnerton, and the taxis and cars try to even knock down the poor traffic guy there. I’ve complained to the traffic department about this road and nothing was done. I even complained about the robot manned pedestrian crossing where the taxis and racing cars try to knock you over when robots are red in Koeberg Road in front of the hut but they ignored that too. Even though other people have been knocked over there, they simply are not interested. The cars and taxis race down Koeberg Road and jump red robots. The traffic department actually stand in full view now and again so they can see them. They should be in private vehicles and clothing then they will catch them. TANYA Email

Task Team take aim at Seli 1 again The South African Navy has resumed Seli 1 wreck reduction activities this week. The Multi-Agency Task Team is pleased with the outcome of the initial reduction efforts by the SA Navy’s Operational Diving Team (ODT). Follow-up assessments undertaken by the ODT have revealed substantial weakening of key areas of the wreck (as initially intended), as well as the resultant breaking up of the wreck in the weeks since the operation concluded. The assessments have, however, identified additional areas requiring intervention. Accordingly, the decision to resume wreck reduction activities was made in order to reduce potential pollution risks. All necessary precautionary measures are being implemented by the Task Team to ensure the protection of the surrounding environment and minimum disruption to the public. As from this week the public are required to adhere to the following safety measures until further advised: the entire beach and dune area opposite the wreck will be closed to the public, and demarcated parking areas will be offlimits; a radius of approximately 1 000 metres surrounding the wreck will be off-limits to all vessels and water users during the operation; and access to the airspace surrounding the wreck will be prohibited and no aircraft will be allowed to operate in the vicinity.

Action was a ‘wonderful man’ JANA BEKKER The cyclist that was killed by a Golden Arrow bus last week (Man doodgery by skool, TygerBurger 22 May) has been described as a “wonderful, wonderful man.” Tsepiso Dlamini, or “Action” as he was affectionately known, was gifted at dealing with animals, especially horses. So says Aurora resident Jenny van der Hoff, a previous employer of Tsepiso. At the time of his death, Tsepiso worked for Theresa Perotti on a small horse yard just outside Durbanville. “Tsepiso was on his way to work when the accident took place,” says Jenny. She said Tsepiso had gone to see his family in Wesbank on Monday night – the evening before the accident, to take them money and clothes. On Tuesday 21 May, he left at 05:40. “He preferred to cycle, rather than taking a taxi. Tsepiso said the taxis had been overfull since the bus strikes and he felt it important to start with ‘his’ horses early in the morning,” said a sad Jenny last week. Action came to the Western Cape in 2004, where he worked as a polo groom until 2011. “He could sense a colic before the horse could – he would spend nights up with a sick horse, nursing it through its problems. He could load any horse – they simply followed him,” says Jenny. Although he was only 31, Action was the “father” of the family. He is survived by his wife and three children, of which the youngest is five months. He also looked after his younger brother. Tsepiso spoke four languages: Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans and English. From an early age, Action worked for Springbok Polo Player Selby Williams in Matatielle, where he schooled polo ponies. “Action was a natural, he had the most gentle hands with horses,” says Jenny.

She says to Tsepiso every horse was a possible polo pony and no horse was trouble. “I think it was he that was good!” she says. According to Jenny, a more cheerful, charming and willing person would be difficult to find. “Whether it meant quickly welding up a metal post or sewing up a saddle, Action made it happen,” she said. His wife, Zama, their three children and his brother-in-law of only 22 have left to Matatielle, in the mountains of Zululand, where Tsepiso is from, where he will be laid to rest. Jenny and Theresa have established an account to assist the surviving members of the family. The details are The Action Fund, Nedbank savings account 2005 735 833, branch code 198 765. Items that can assist the family are S26 milk, number three or bigger Pampers nappies, Cerilac or Nestum porridge or oats. Items can be delivered to 28 High Street, Aurora. “There will be no administrative costs regarding this account and no monies will be paid to the signatories of the account,” said Jenny.

The late Tsepiso Dlamini, or “Action”. V Eyewitnesses to the accident, specifically Mark Cornell, are requested to contact Detective Riaan Basson at Durbanville Police Detective unit at 021 970 5600.

Tragic cycler death raises questions Many questions remain unanswered following the tragic accident in which a cyclist was killed (Man doodgery by skool, TygerBurger, 22 May) Jenny van der Hoff, a previous employer of Tsepiso Dlamini, the victim, says the question of how safe the intersection is, is raised following the tragic incident. “How can the speed limit be 70 km/h, past a school, with sports fields on either side?” she says.

Jenny asks how it can be possible to have bus stops so close to an intersection? She speaks highly of investigating officer Detective Riaan Basson of the Durbanville Detectives Branch. “He was the most compassionate person to deal with. He always went out of his way to make things easier for the family. All accolades to him,” she said. She asked why, at the scene, the body was not shielded from onlookers, for the deceased’s dignity.

“As jongman was ek baie uit voeling met my medemens. Enige pyn was vir my lagwekkend.”

‘We Luv Wine’ for worthy charity DESIREÉ RORKE Cooking 64 000 meals per month is no easy feat – even unfathomable some would say! But for the dedicated staff at Shiloh Food Relief in Brackenfell, it’s a daily labour of love. For hours every day, Joleen Evers, Arlene Adams-Roslind, Tembela Ntungwa and Lumka Solani, chop up copious amounts of fresh vegetables to brew wholesome healthy stews in gigantic pots. These meals are then packed, frozen and distributed across the Western Cape to alleviate widespread hunger among the poor. This worthwhile charity organisation was chosen to be the beneficiary of the inaugural “We Luv Wine” festival to be held at the CapeGate Shopping Centre in June. TygerBurger is a proud media sponsor for this event, which promises to become an annual feature on the festival calendar. Leading up to the event local chef Shaun Schoeman from well-known restaurant Fyndraai at Solms-Delta winery near Franschhoek, visited the kitchens of Shiloh Relief on Thursday where he shared some insights with the kitchen and cookery team and judged the efforts of personnel who were invited to create their own meals, using typical ingredients from the Shiloh weekly menu. Three of the kitchen staff and driver Pieter Kleinhans impressed Shaun with their own individual versions of Cape traditional dishes such as curry and rice and tomato stew. But in the end, after a difficult decision it was Pieter’s cabbage and samp and Arlene’s breyani that won Shaun over.

“These people can cook! I loved their interesting combinations,” he said after the judging concluded. Shaun has been executive chef at Fyndraai for for four years where he is well known for his trademark traditional South African dishes. He will host the two winners for lunch at Fynbos this week where the “We Luv Wine” festival, will be launched. The wine fest takes place at the Cape Gate Shopping Precinct on Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June from 17:00 to 21:00. More than 100 wines from the Orange River area, Worcester, Paarl, Stellenbosch and the Swartland region will be featured, with a wide selection to suit every palate and wallet, ranging from red, white, dry and sweet right through to port, bubbly and pot-stilled brandy to ensure that everyone enjoys the evening. Some of the wineries participating are: Avontuur Estate, Groenland, Hidden Valley, Koelenhof, Du Toitskloof, Landskroon, Orange River Cellars, Riebeek Cellars, SolmsDelta, Two Oceans, Croydon, Checkers Oddbins, Quoin Rock, Vergenoegd and Lourensford Wine Estate. Many exhibitors will present related products like cheese, olives, olive oil and chocolates at their wine stalls. Comfy lounge seating and and a café-style eating area are yours to enjoy. V Tickets cost R50 per person which includes a tast ing glass and are available at the information desks in the CapeGate Centre and at www.ticket break.co.za. Tickets will also be available at the door. For more information contact Cobie van Oort at 021 981 0216 or cobie@cvomarketing.co.za.

Youth integration through local drama Cape Town youth are set to get an enormous boost from this year’s highly entertaining, stimulating and diverse Youth Festival, particularly the much anticipated debut production, Fietna Lekka Jy, the African Initiative Workshops and the DCAS Youth Celebration Showcase. The festival, to be held from 12 to 16 June at the Artscape Theatre, forms part of the Artscape Educational Youth Development Programme that is designed to promote social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts. “The youth programme aims to contribute to social cohesion, integration and inclusion of previously disadvantaged communities and to contribute to transformation in our society. The new challenge facing our youth is the acquisition of skills and only through learning new skills can

they add value to themselves, their future careers and their communities,” says Marlene le Roux, director for audience development and education for Artscape. “We would therefore like to appeal to the public to support our youth by making their bookings for these exciting events through Computicket or Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695,” says Marlene. Fietna Lekka Jy, is a social community comedy drama in Afrikaans. The story is set in the Boland in the 1980s and is about the true friendship of three boys who grew up in a rural farming envi-

ronment where culture and politics had a huge influence on their upbringing. These boys share similar identity crises that were ignored in the community such as dynamics caused within family relationships and friendships that were influenced by all the political and social struggles of the times. The “Fietna” stories, (gossip or trouble stories) still prevail in communities today. In addition to Fietna Lekka Jy, Artscape will also be hosting the following activities. V African Theatre Initiative Workshops – An initiative to put African dance and

drama firmly on the international stage will start with a symposium and series of workshops to be held during the festival. V DACS Youth Celebration Showcase – The Department of Arts and Culture and Sport will showcase a selection of their developmental youth projects. This will include performances in the genres of choral, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary African dance and indigenous music. Artscape has scheduled most of its productions in June and July to give a platform to young people to experience the performing arts, and to express themselves through this universal medium. This deliciously dark and intensely flavoured sauce is not quite the traditional sweet and sour sauce one might expect. But it is a personal favourite of mine – and very moreish! It can be served hot or cold as an accompanying sauce or dip with meat, chicken or fish. You will need: V 125 ml (½ cup) water V 45 ml (3 tablespoons) treacle sugar (previously called soft brown sugar) V 15 ml (1 tablespoon) white vinegar V 25 ml (5 teaspoons) soy sauce V 10 ml (2 teaspoons) tomato paste V 5 ml (1 teaspoon) freshly crushed

teaspoon) water into a paste. Stir into the sauce. Cook through, stirring continuously until the sauce has thickened slightly. This will only take about one minute. Do not cook the sauce for too long – it should not become too thick. The sauce will be very dark with a glossy appearance. Serve hot or cold as a sauce on the side with pork fillet, chicken kebabs, beef steak, grilled or pan-fried fish. Also perfect as a dip with mini meatballs, chicken breast fillet strips, chipolatas or any cocktail sausages. What to do with the rest of the tin of tomato paste? Use in pizza sauce, bolognaise sauce, soups or stews. Makes 100 ml (a bit less than ½ cup) of a sauce. V Dalene is a recipe developer. Contact her on 082 562 9787.

Get hands dirty for investigation More than 1 200 Grade 10 learners from 11 disadvantaged schools in the Western Cape are being hosted to a day of scientific investigation by the Intaka Island Environmental Education Centre at Century City as part of its Outreach Programme over the next few months. Leandri Van der Vyver, Intaka Island EcoCentre co-ordinator, said that the new Life Sciences CAPS curriculum for Grade 10 recommends learners do a scientific investiga-

tion of a local ecosystem and explore the interaction between the living and non-living components of the ecosystem. “Intaka is a thriving wetland ecosystem and as such it provides a perfect platform for this investigation, particularly given the centre’s diverse educational team, which is fully equipped to run these courses.” She said in so doing they were not only reducing the teacher workload required to prepare the investigation, but were also assist-

ing the learners with a real hands-on, outdoor educational experience in a safe and secure environment. It is a double win scenario.” Van der Vyver added that while the programme was very popular with schools, not all were able to cover the costs involved including transport and materials. “We are extremely grateful to Absa for sponsoring this programme enabling us to offer it to more than 1 200 learners from 11 previously disadvantaged schools.”

Get a blister to feed children LAILA MAJIET Every weekday, thousands of learners long for 10:30 when they are handed a plate of food. For some, their next meal will be 24 hours later, at the same time the next day. Malnutrition and a lack of energy spell a dark future for children filled with potential. Yesterday marked World Hunger Day and as food insecurity increases so more children end up going to school hungry. Three out of four children go to school hungry every day. The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) works tirelessly to help feed these hungry pupils. The association feeds two meals to about 330 000 children every school day. A total of 660 000 meals are served daily in the province. PSFA receives a subsidy from the Department of Education to feed 90 % of that total, while the remaining 10 % requires the association to raise R12m to avoid being forced to decrease the number of children being fed daily. However, the government subsidy will be terminated as of June. Fundraising co-ordinator for the association, Kate Hamilton, says children at 111 schools across the province benefit from the programme. Funding is essential to ensure children are fed. With the slash in government funding, the association has been forced to cut down on the number of children they

feed. It costs only R2 to feed a child two cooked meals a day. People are being encouraged to adopt a child for the year for only R395. As the association’s biggest fundraising event looms, the public is being called – now in its 44th year, Blisters for Bread is one of Cape Town’s calendar events. The Blisters for Bread race attracted a record number of more than 15 800 walkers, coming out in support of PSFA and feeding hungry children. All funds are directed to the school feeding programme. This year’s race will be held on Sunday 25 August. Entry cost is R42 (feeds 21 children for a day). V For more details, visit http://www.psfa.org.za/ blisters_for_bread.

Singing to younger generation LOUISA STEYL “With the type of music I do, I have to talk to the crowd.” So says jazz singer, Nizaam. “I’m a new kid on the block,” says the singer, who has been singing for just two years. Nizaam describes his music as pop-jazz for both young and old, but he hopes to bring jazz to a younger audience. “I’m trying to talk to that market,” he says. Nizaam’s career started at a karaoke night. He explains that his father owned a nightclub and he was singing karaoke in the club one night when someone came up to him and told him he should consider a career in music. “Since then I’ve just been moving forward,” he says. Nizaam has already released his first album, titled, The Jazz me Blues. The 14-track album was released about two years ago and Nizaam says he wanted to get a feel for being in studio. He recently recorded his first single “For Evermore”, which was produced by acclaimed producer, Helmut Meijer. The song has already been submitted to local radio stations. “It’s a huge achievement for me,” says Nizaam. He explains that he recently attended a songwriting workshop with international songwriter, Gavin Edwards, after which he set himself a goal to write a single. He has also written more than 200 songs

Kaartjies vir hierdie besondere konsert is teen R120, R100 (pensioenarisse) en R50 (studente) by Computicket (083 915 8000) of aanlyn verkrygbaar.

Social drama asks about wrong or right Milnerton Players will host their next social evening on Friday 7 June with a variety of entertainment on offer. Three drama students from Parklands College will be exploring the concept of whether anything is truly right or wrong or does it just depend on whether one agrees or disagrees? They illustrate the point, especially from a woman’s perspective, in mono-

logue, poetry and movement. Continuing the theme of “doing the right thing” is a short play entitled A Matter of Husbands after which the evening will be rounded off with musical items by Ralph Pearsons’ M & M group. V Entrance costs R10 or R5 for members. V For more information, visit www.milnertonplay ers.com.

Altesame 45 daarvan.

Uro Erichsen sit hier by die familiegrootte eetkamertafel in hul oopplankombuis.

When there’s no pill to swallow NADINE MOODIE Access to contraception is not just a woman’s right, it’s a human right. This is the view of an international organisation which lobbies for the rights of women to get contraceptives. And as the world celebrates International Day of Action for Women’s Health on 28 May – an initiative by the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights – access to contraceptives in South Africa remains a challenge. Founded in 1984, the organisation advocates for the rights for controlled methods of sterilisation, abortion and use of contraceptives. Their network consists of more than 1 000 member organisations in 105 countries. This year the network has launched the Call for Action 2013: Access to Contraceptives is a Human Right campaign. It aims to create awareness of the issue through conferences and launches across the globe. “In South Africa nothing is happening on May 28, because the contraception policy scheduled for that day has been cancelled for five years in a row,” says Marion Stevens, co-ordinator at Women in Sexual Reproductive Health (WISH). While some women point a finger at long queues and waiting periods to access these means locally, others blame hostile clinic or hospital staff. Religious views of staff have also come into contention. Berne Peters fell pregnant at 44. The pregnancy was not planned. “I stopped going to the clinic for my injection, because the queue was too long and I didn’t have the patience to wait to be attended to,” Peters says. “I’m 47 years old and have to care for my three-year-old child.” Despite contraceptives being widely available, Berne says women avoid getting the readily available birth control method, because of the extended wait. “Condoms are everywhere; you can find them at hospitals and NGOs. People are

Contraceptives like the pill are often inacces sible to women in South Africa. even using condoms to shine their shoes,” she says. “The long queues and the low spirits of the often unfriendly and overworked nurses at clinics discourage women from going for their injections every three months.” Bronwen*, a 25-year-old HIV-positive mother to a 10-month-old baby boy, did not know a variety of contraceptives existed. “I never used protection,” she says. She discovered her HIV status two months after she and a former boyfriend had had sexual relations. She chose to not abort, as she “knew my mother would take care of my son.” “I didn’t know he (my ex-boyfriend) was HIV-positive. I only found out when I was pregnant. There was nothing I could do, but to make peace with my situation and move on,” Bronwen says. “Once I was aware of my pregnancy and HIV status, I started seeing a doctor each month.” Thanks to the early detection and medication used during the pregnancy, her son did not contract HIV. A family medicine practitioner, Dr Kevin Stoffberg, says prescribing contra-

ceptives to patients becomes “complicated” when the patient is ill. “There are various contraceptive medications and often health professionals will give certain patients the injection instead of a tablet, depending on their medical condition,” he says. For unemployed Bronwen, life is difficult. Her unplanned pregnancy, medical side effects and the responsibility of having to raise a child add to her problems of living in an informal settlement. “My mother looks after the baby, because I don’t have the means to take care of him,” she says. “I use the three-month injection to prevent another pregnancy. I use my medication every day and visit the clinic for my monthly CD4-count test.” Bernedette Muthien, of Engender, an NGO advocating for gender and sexuality issues, says the idea of contraception becomes moot because of high levels of gender violence in the country. “There’s more access to contraceptives than before, but some medications – such as the pill and the injection – have hideous side-effects that people often want to avoid,” she explains. In the event of her death, Berne fears she will leave her toddler parentless. “I didn’t want to have this baby, but I have to live with the consequences. I did not get the injection and my partner didn’t use protection.” In South Africa a woman is said to be raped every 17 seconds. And many of these incidents lead to unwanted pregnancies. Abortion is always an option, but for many women this is taboo as principles, morals and religious views dictate their decisions. “At no cost you can have an abortion at Groote Schuur Hospital, but the nurses are sometimes religious and discourage women who don’t have the economic means to look after the child, from taking this route,” Muthien says. V *Her name has been changed.

V Vir meer besonderhede, kontak Robert by 076 909 9354.

TYGERBURGER | MILNERTON Woensdag, 29 Mei 2013

Eastern Rovers unyielding THOMAS CAROLUS Eastern Rovers come up against a confident Blue Downs Spurs side, all of who are in fine form at the moment. But coach Cyril Josephs said he is confident going into the anticipated Northern Suburbs Football Association Super League Knock-out clash at Symphony Park on Saturday. “We are not stressing about our opponent’s current form, but rather on how to walk away victorious in that match in order to advance to the next round of the competition,” says Josephs. “The other thing is that we are also really hungry for silverware. It’s amazing what winning does for a squad and for us it would restore the belief amongst the players going forward.” “First of all, as a club, as players and as the coach, we cannot be happy with this situation because we lost five league games so far this season. If you analyse these matches you will see we made a lot of unnecessary mistakes that cost us games and points. “I understand the frustration of the supporters because they want to see a winning

team, but as the coach I believe in the current group of players and we will keep fighting to get out of the slump.” The side started the new season brightly, ensuring they got out of the relegation zone. But now the boys in green and white want to make up for this. To the man, they believe they owe it to the supporters who have stood by them through difficult times the first nines games of the season. Coach Josephs has been trying out different combinations, some of which were forced through injuries or suspensions. He believes the team is not quite where he wants it to be, but has seen positives in the performance of the boys. He has given most of the players a run, and now the task is to find that winning streak, the click that will bring the side together and make them into a hard-playing unit. Fans have been urging the team to go out and fight, and are still confident that the coach is on the right track to getting Eastern Rovers back to where they belong, at the top. “This cup is very important because we know what it would mean to the supporters and the club as a whole if we win it.”

IAAF 6TH SPOT: EYEING OLYMPICS

Tiaan reaches for stars STEHAN SCHOEMAN

T

iaan Smit is currently ranked 6th on the IAAF world ranking for 110 m hurdles (youth) – his third consecutive year in the top 10. Tiaan is the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month winner. His extraordinary and successful career dates back nine years ago when he met his coach, Marcel Otto. The two has been together ever since. “I really couldn’t have asked for a better coach. In the nine years we’ve built a solid relationship and he knows how to get the best out of me. He surely deserves a lot of credit. If it wasn’t for him, I doubt that I would be where I am today.” said Tiaan.

Right track Back in 2011 when he still competed in the youth division he was ranked second on the IAAF rankings and last year fourth. This year however, it’s his first year competing as a junior and lying sixth on the log indicates that he is on the right track seeing as he has the whole of next year as well to climb the ranks. “It takes a massive amount of hard work

and dedication. We are talking six days a week preparing for competitions and five days in the off-season. “It involves everything from heavy weight training in the gym to explosive power exercises to stamina and endurance training to stay in top physical shape.” With the Africa Junior Championships in Germiston looming, he has his one goal in mind – beating his current Africa junior record of 13.51 seconds. “I’m going to give it my best shot. But I think it might be tricky given the cold winter conditions.”

Olympics This is his immediate goal. For the future the Olympics is definitely on the cards. Furthermore he would also like to qualify for the World Junior Championships taking place in America next year. Tiaan walks away with a pair of sunglasses sponsored by Bosman, McNulty and Du Toit Optometrists.
