“R

emember Marco, no one is watching and you have nothing to prove. Stay above 150 feet...” These were the last words spoken to 22-year-old Marco Pheil by the chief flight instructor at Morningstar, Len Klopper. When Pheil never returned from his solo run last week Tuesday, Klopper alerted emergency services and it was soon discovered that Pheil had tragically crashed his gyrocopter on a farm near Bloubergstrand. Farm owner Seymour Currie, the first person on the scene, said Pheil’s body was “completely charred”.

“He still had his earphones on. It was horrific. I would never wish anyone to see what I saw,” said Currie. Just a few hours later Klopper took it upon himself to phone the the Bredasdorp commercial pilot’s parents. He knows Pheil’s parents well, and it was one of the worst things he’s ever had to do. Says Klopper: “I have kids as well. Nobody wants to outlive their own children... One thing is certain. Marco died doing what he was extremely passionate about. Flying was his life and he was a natural talent. He was a fully qualified commercial pilot and grew up in a family of aviators.” Klopper elaborates on the fateful morning when Pheil lost his life: “He was on six hours

flying solo. In the morning session we went up and I instructed him on a specific set of criteria in crop spraying. Then after the flight he took a break and probably had some coffee.” Pheil took off in reasonably windy conditions (10 to 15 knots), something not out of the ordinary at all. “When aeroplanes and helicopters are locked away, that’s when gyrocopters come out. Windy conditions are very favourable fir this type of aircraft,” he explains. The Civil Aviation investigation into what caused the accident is still ongoing, but Klopper is quietly confident that Pheil was not to blame. V To page 2.

ore than 500 years ago the Khoi-San culture dominated the shores of the Western Cape. Never quite proliferating, they lived and died without ever leaving significant structures behind for future archeologists to discover. Besides rock paintings and humble possessions such as pottery, the certainty of their existence can be tracked through history by their skeletons – a treasure in itself. When construction started on a house in Melkbosstrand, the last thing builders thought they would uncover was a human skeleton. They soon came across another and phoned the police, who seized the find until they could rule out any foul play. The Heritage Foundation was contacted once this was ruled out, and two weeks after the initial find University of Cape Town archeologist Louisa Hutten was at the building site looking for clues. “The police first thought they had three skeletons, but it turned out to be two – a women and a young child (most likely four or five years old),” says Hutten. While Hutten’s team were on the site they uncovered a third skeleton, which was just as perfectly preserved as the other two. Quite remarkle considering that it could be as old as 3 000 years. As opposed to the other two skeletons, this time the team could see in what position it was lying. Like the skeleton found in 1999 next to Otto du Plessis Drive, the male skeleton Hutten’s team uncovered was also lying in a foetal position with one hand resting underneath the chin. “Sometimes a hand is under the chin, but most of the times the hands are together,” explains Hutten.

The skeleton of a man, estimated to be between 500 and 3 000 years old, was discovered at a building site in Melkbosstrand earlier in April. There has been a lot of media attention dedicated to this latest find in Melkbosstrand, which surprises Hutten, because it is quite common to uncover evidence of Khoi-San existence – in particular finding skeletons buried in the sand. “The alkaline and salt in the sand and shoal are quite good for preservation, so many skeletons are uncovered along the West Coast.” When an archeologist comes across a skeleton, they carefully search the surrounding area, at the correct depth, for pieces of coal or shards of pottery. Finding any one of these would be a great indicator as to how old the skeleton is. In the latest discovery, pottery was found in the vicinity, which suggests that the skeletons were buried there between 500 and 3 000 years ago. “The pottery suggests that there has been contact with other groups further north.

They have most likely been exposed to material culture. The late Stone Age goes back to 40 000 years ago, but pottery in their culture goes back to about 3 000 years ago,” she explains. The skeletons were claimed from the police and unearthed from the sand, and now reside at the University of Cape Town. Soon the carbon dating process will begin and a more accurate age can be calculated. “Skeletons we have dated quite recently have ranged between 500 and 3 000 years old, so my estimate at this stage is indeed between that period. We will date a fraction of the rib. The age would eventually be accurate within 30 to 40 years either way.” Building was temporarily halted when the Heritage Foundation became involved, and according to Hutten it will start again promptly. She says an archeologist will hopefully be on site during the next few weeks.

Says ER24’s spokesperson, Russel Meiring: “When paramedics arrived on the farm they found the light aircraft completely ablaze and the surrounding veld burning rapidly. The pilot of the aircraft was already dead. Provincial services were on scene to extinguish the fire.” The local aviation industry is still in shock days after the tragic accident. Says Klopper: “A gyrocopter accident is very unusual. I have been a pilot for 30 years and trained over 70 pilots and have never come across something like this. If there is a technical issue with the craft at a higher altitude then it can be safely landed, but techniques such as crop spraying and game capture require one to fly at lower altitude and then it becomes dangerous because you’re on the ground before you know it.” Klopper insists that everything that could be done to ensure a safe flight for Pheil was done beforehand. “There is no compromise for safety,” he says. His attitude towards safety is backed up by an award he won last year, namely the Safety Award of the Aeroclub of South Africa. If all went according to plan then Pheil would have completed his training in about four more hours of flying solo.

Says ER24’s Vermaak: “Members of the local National Sea Rescue Institute came across the incident and immediately started stabilising the rider before emergency services arrived. Paramedics from ER24 and Life Healthcare arrived on the scene and initiated advanced life support treatment. The rider sustained multiple injuries and was rushed off to a nearby hospital for further stabilisation.” The exact cause of the incident is not clear. According to Vermaak, bystanders on the scene said the rider crashed and was flung onto the side of the road.

wo horrific motorcycle accidents in Table View this Easter weekend left one person dead and another critically injured. In the fatal accident a man sustained “multiple amputations” when a BMW collided with his scooter on Marine Drive on Saturday morning. And on Friday morning a 35-year-old rider allegedly crashed his motorcycle on Otto du Plessis Road. A TygerBurger reader who prefers to remain anonymous witnessed the immediate aftermath of the fatal accident. “In a split second many lives were changed, bright futures shattered just because one person did not have respect for the rules of the road,” she reflected, before recounting the events that led to the traumatic experience. “On Saturday I went for a morning run at 05:15 on the cycle path at Sunset Beach. I heard a car approaching at a very high speed and then a light metallic luxury sedan flashed recklessly passed me in the direction of Table View. I still thought to myself that the driver is driving as if he intended to get someone killed. Five minutes later I noticed that the road barrier was bent and that there were debris laying in the cycle path. To my horror I realized the cylindrical object laying across the cycle path was a full length unclothed human leg with a sport shoe still attached to the foot.” According to ER24’s spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, the biker sustained “multiple amputations” and was declared dead on the scene. Says Vermaak: “The driver of the BMW was assessed by paramedics and found without any serious injuries. The local police that attended the scene later removed him. The exact cause of the incident is not yet

he Blue Gum trees along Blaauwberg Road will be getting a makeover from 5 May. Even though these alien beauties greedily guzzle water and pose a risk to MyCiTi busses, passing vehicles and pedestrians, the city is investing the time and money to prune them. “The entire pruning operation should take about six weeks to complete, weather permitting. A private contractor has been appointed to carry out the work,” says ward councillor Heather Brenner. She adds that the contractor has a “special talent” for pruning Blue Gums. She continues: “A large number of the trees have reached the stage where they pose a potential risk to the safety of properties, businesses and other road users in the surrounding community. It is also particularly important to prevent damage to the newly constructed infrastructure of the MyCiti public transport service.” These particular trees have a rich history, and Brenner says they have been there for as long as she can remember. Many would reason, however, that it would have been wonderful had there been an indigenous forest along the road instead of Blue Gums. When Brenner was asked about the city’s management of invasive species, particularly that of Blue Gums, she replied: “It’s a bit of a catch-22 situation because of the heritage value.” Brenner would not be drawn into further discussing the city’s stance. In 2011 the Environmental Resource Management’s biodiversity fact sheet indicated that Cape Town is home to largest number of threatened or extinct plant species in the world. It states: “Some 13 plant species that used to occur in Cape Town are now globally extinct in the wild. A further 306 of Cape Town’s plant species, and 27 of its animal species are in immediate danger of extincti-

Burn keeps fynbos healthy A controlled “biodiversity” burn on the eastern side of Intaka Island nature reserve in Century City was successfully completed in just over six hours last week Monday. Alan Liebenburg, Century City environmental officer, said the burn was required in terms of the Century City Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and endorsed by the Intaka Island Blouvlei Management Committee. “The EMP requires that the Sand Plan Fynbos on the northern half of Intaka Island has to be burnt every 15 years to stimulate new growth and ensure that plant and animal

communities remain healthy. Without fire, Fynbos becomes senescent and forest and thicket elements begin invading,” he says. “By managing the fynbos on Intaka Island, the Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA) plays a role in conserving the Cape Floral Kingdom, which is the smallest of the six floral kingdoms in the world, and is the only one contained in its entirety within a single country,” he concludes. On receiving a permit from the City of Cape Town, the burn was conducted by a professional service provider and monitored by the CCPOA during the procedure.

Part of the city’s draft budget proposal currently under review includes the restructuring of policies for rates relief to poor residents. Johan van der Merwe, head of the city’s finance portfolio committee, explained how the city policy would be structured during the next fiscal year which starts on 1 July, provided the provisional budget is accepted. “Part of the concept budget is the concept policy on indigent relief. When the concept budget is approved at the end of May, we will have concrete figures to consider for approval regarding policy for poverty alleviation,” he said. “The figures in the draft policy reflect that which can be revised after public participation process has been completed, and will be effective as of the new financial bookyear. “We care for the poor and vulnerable,” he said. He said the financial form this “care”

would take, once the provisional budget and policies were accepted, was as follows: VFree basic services to those with properties valued at less than R400 000. VFree basic services to those with a gross monthly household income of R3 500. VSenior citizens qualify for rates rebates if their gross monthly household income is less than R12 000 per month. VIndigent grants provide a 100% rates rebate, an additional 4,5kl of water and a free 240 litre refuse bin for all households with a gross monthly income of R3 500 or less. V75% rates rebate for residents with an income between R3 500 and R4 000. V50% rates rebates for residents with an income between R4 000 and R4 500. V25% rates rebate for residents with an income between R4 500 and R5 000 for 2013/2014. Van der Merwe said in general the electricity tariff blocks apply per calendar month and not per purchase. He advised consumers to only purchase the necessary amount of energy they need in a month. “This will keep the amount paid as low as possible.”

Some starve, some die from exposure, dehydration, or suffocation, and others try to chew through their own limbs. Mankind’s cruelty towards animals is undeniable. After a Phoenix resident witnessed the slow and painful death of a rodent, she is now attempting to get rodent bait banned. The resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, elaborates: “Having witnessed firsthand the suffering of these creatures, it will haunt me forever. I want to redeem myself for my bad decision to use these baits (sheets of glue).” The resident doesn’t know why there are so many rats and mice in Phoenix recently, but she guesses that it could be due to the canal that was closed, overcrowding in neighbouring Joe Slovo Park or overflowing sewerage pipes. She just knew the time has come to start ridding the suburb of rodents. She turned to baits and now she is haunted by the picture of the rat “squirminig and crying for hours until it died a painful death”. Her neighbour saw a rodent chewing off its own limb. SPCA’s spokesperson Lise-Marie GreeffVillet says baiting of rodents is a difficult topic. “The mandate of the SPCA is to prevent cruelty to all animals, and none of us want to see even a rat experience the painful death of poisoning.” The Animals Protection Act (APA) states that a person will be committing an offence if the person “lays or exposes any poison or any poisoned fluid or edible matter or infectious agents except for the destruction of vermin or marauding domestic animals or without taking reasonable precautions to prevent injury or disease being caused to animals”. Greeff-Villet continues: “According to the APA one is allowed to use poison to destroy vermin if you do it responsibly and take all reasonable precautions to prevent the poison from affecting any other animal (or human). However the reality is that for the layman to use poison in a controlled and zero risk environment, is almost impossible. Death by poisoning is arguably the most cruel and inhumane way to kill an animal, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA strongly advises that more humane methods of trapping (passive trapping) and destruction be used. We are also vehemently opposed to glue traps and any mechanical traps – both instruments that cause immeasurable and prolonged suffering before death.”

Small business feels the pinch We have a small business. We work day and night to keep our business going. Most months we earn enough for a basic living, but sometimes we do not have food on our table. I just read in a local newspaper about a company – a small business like ours – that was sued by a client for not doing the work the way the client wanted it done. The client says within 24 hours the owner of the business was there to do the job. But after it was done, he struggled to get the business owner back to fix minor things. As customers we are told to complain about everything. But, we are forced to start small businesses because we are unable to find work in our country. We have to jump at every work opportunity that comes our way. We do not always have money to go back to completed jobs, as we have to jump to the next job to survive. The business owner I mentioned had to pay a large sum back to the client. He did not pay until the client threatened with further legal action. I bet he did not have the cash to pay straight away. We also live from one job to the other, with no cash in between. Please consider small business owners’ positions. Do not fight and threaten legal action on every little aspect. We want to make you happy, but sometimes things go wrong. Help us grow and do not try your utmost to break us down. If your dog poops, use a scoop We have recently moved to the Big Bay area from Johannesburg. One of my greatest new-found pleasures is taking my dog and joining the other dog walkers for a brisk walk along Melkbosstrand Beach early each morning. What a beautiful area this is and how lucky we all are to live so close to the beach. I marvel daily at the spectacular sight of mountain and sea. Unfortunately, I can’t gaze up for too long – I must continually look out to check I don’t step in any dog poop! It makes me sad to think that people seem to think nothing of allowing their dogs to relieve themselves on the grass or on the beach itself, and not have the decency to pick it up. What an outcry there will be the day the city enforces the “no dogs allowed” rule simply because dog owners don’t pick up after their dog. People walk here and kids play here – do you want to step in poop? There are many bins along the Melkbos beach front; there really is no excuse. It’s as simple as this: grab a bag before you leave home; if your dog poops use the bag as a glove and grab the poop; turn the bag inside-out; knot it and drop it in the bin. Circus is ‘nothing but amazing’ We recently visited the circus and were met by a handful of protesters at the robots. We enjoyed the show and it was well attended. We even had the opportunity to feed the animals, which was something my daughter will never forget. We are in full support of the circus and will always welcome them back to Parow. Maybe the people at the robots should have taken 10 minutes to see for themselves. This circus is nothing but amazing and made me think of my childhood, when we also visited the circus. The Circle of Friends did it again! Their fourth year of Easter for the Elderly Project was once again a rip-roaring success. The seniors at Milnerton’s Huis Zonnekus, Huis Ysterplaat and Huis Pikkie were treated to Easter eggs, gift packs and plenty of smiles on Monday. The Circle of Friends could, of course, not do it without their supporters. Good natured people in the community donated the items that were distributed during the day. A total of 241 gifts were ultimately delivered to the three homes. Volunteers also joined in the festivities and helped the three ladies of Circle of Friends to distribute the gifts. Says Circle of Friends’ Lucy Walsh: “Hats off to the volunteers for their hard work with all the deliveries today. You guys rock!” Walsh concludes: “A special thanks to each and every one who donated towards this worthy cause - without you this project would not have been possible. It would be remiss of us if we didn’t thank those individuals, organisations and companies who made cash donations. “The money was wisely and responsibly spent and helped to bless our Elderly during this Easter season.”

Singer and songwriter David Meulen has given himself the space to explore his acoustic side on his new album and first solo project, @davidmeulen. David used to front the band Dividable Grand, who enjoyed success with their album The Buzz, which resulted in them performing alongside some of the country’s biggest rock acts. “We had a good run,” says David of his former band, pointing out that they toured the country a couple of times. “I’ve always had an acoustic side to me and Dividable Grand was much more a rock band,” he says. “The music I’m making now is much more alternative acoustic vibes, more the indie side of things,” David explains, although there are still traces of his rock influence. After Dividable Grand broke up, David took a solo road trip along the Garden Route. It took a while for him to “get into his stride” but it was when he made the decision to write for himself and not an audience, that the songs started taking shape. David traces the start of his music career to when he was just six-years-old. He had got a guitar for his birthday after hearing a Beatles song on the radio and loving it. He says being a musician is all he ever wanted to do and has “never really considered any other career”. Producer Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw, who worked on The Buzz, produced, engineered and co-wrote some of the songs on @davidmeulen. “We had a ton of really great people come in and play on the album,” David says. Johnny Clegg’s drummer Barry van Zyl and Dirty Skirts bassist Maurice Paliaga are just two of the big names who can be heard on David’s new offering. “The two of them together- it’s just the best rhythm section you can imagine,” he says,

They fight out of REPS Fitness powering Rico Hattingh’s MMA academy in Bellville. Luke (lightweight) from Goodwood and Nathan (featherweight) from Kuils River are both excited about entering the hexagon for what is their first step towards glory. According to their trainer Rico Hattingh, both these guys have what it takes to make it to the top.

Massive future “I am so excited about these guys. Luke has a massive future ahead of him. He is only 19-years-old and he puts his heart and soul into this. I sometimes have to tell him to stop to prevent him from burnout. His dedication is phenomenal.” Luke trains three times a day for six days a week. “I simply love what I do. Besides my busy training schedule I help Rico with the training of children at schools,” said Luke. Nathan reckons having the experience of Rico in his corner will have a calming effect. “Rico brings a lot of experience and expertise. For now, we are conditioning and prepping for anyone. When it gets announced who we will face, then we will sit down and look at the opponent’s strong and weak points. But the mindset is that we will be ready for anyone come 5 June,” said Nathan determinedly. “Nathan gets underestimated a lot, when

you stand in front of him he doesn’t look intimidating. But let me tell you he is as hard as nails. He has the right mindset, he is humble and a helluva all-round fighter. “So far I am happy with our preparation, the guys are looking good, they are fit and don’t have any niggling injuries. We should know early May who their opponents will be. The gameplan for now is to strengthen their weak points and to improve their strong points even further,” said a confident Rico.

With hometown racers enjoying a good run, the locals are looking to extend several championship advantages. One class where Cape drivers dominate in the opening round is the open Rotax Max Challenge 125cc class where local ace Eugene Denyssen (TonyKart) defends his narrow championship lead from fellow Capetonians, Kosmic mounted Luke Herring and Julian van der Watt (Zanardi). Another local ace to watch is Jonathan Aberdein (TonyKart) and only a fool would ignore Birel driver Jurie Swart who moved up from Junior Max this year.
