NATIONAL MONUMENT: PRESERVED FOR POSTERITY

Iconic bridge restored TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji The Woodbridge Island bridge which has undergone a multi-million rand upgrade was finally opened to the public on Friday 29 November. Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, said the wooden bridge is a provincial heritage site and the only surviving structure of its kind in South Africa. “As such, the City of Cape Town has an obligation, in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, to preserve this structure. It

is furthermore considered to be a landmark structure and once restored, will become a transport link to Woodbridge island.” Purchase said the delay in opening the bridge was because the City ordered the contractor to reinstall some of the safety railings to ensure that the bridge meets safety requirements before it is opened to the public. “The reinstallation of the 17 steel railings was completed on Thursday 28 November and installation of directional signage on 27 November,” she said. The construction at this 118-year-old brid-

ge started in April last year. Purchase said the bridge is listed as a national monument and the City was legally obliged to preserve this structure. “The wooden bridge, which had been closed for a number of years is being rehabilitated and it will perform as a fully functional non-motorised link for pedestrians and cyclists between Woodbridge Island and the non-motorised transport facilities and Integrated Rapid Transit bus route (MyCiTi bus route) that runs along Marine Drive,” she said. Purchase added that the restored bridge is

required to comply with all current and relevant codes and standards to provide a safe pedestrian bridge. “The scope of work consisted of structural timber and landscaping limited to the immediate areas on the east and west banks of the Diep River,” she said. Besides the rehabilitation of the bridge itself, the work included: . Improvements to the west embankment of the island-side riverbank. . Installation of new gabions on the edge of the embankment. . Work on the new retaining walls.
