lans for a new school in Table View are underway and if all goes according to plan, it will be up and running come January 2020. The school, which will be on the corner of Gie Road and Circle Road, will be temporary as the department of education says they had to make a quick decision to put up the school as there is a great need in the area. The entrance to the school will be from Circle Road. Due to the fact that this is a temporary school and the school will be located on a piece of land owned by the department of public works, the consultants didn’t have to go through the lengthy process of public participation and doing an environmental impact assessment among other things. All this will be done when they construct a permanent structure on the land, which is earmarked for a primary school and a high school with a shared sports field in the middle. Department of education officials held a public meeting to inform the residents about the temporary school as well as to hear their input regarding the school. The meeting was held at Church on the Rise on Tuesday 22 October.
The school will have 10 classrooms, a feeding room, two ablution facilities, a water cooler, storage containers, 12 parking bays and an administration unit. It will cater for Grade R to Grade 3 at the start with the department looking to accommodate up to Grade 7 later. There will be a permanent fence around the field so that it is not illegally occupied. The school will not be a dual-medium school as the current schools don’t have enough learners to fill up a class and sustain an Afrikaans class. Infrastructure project manager for the education department, Ismail Jakoet, says it has never been the objective of the department of education to provide temporary schools. However, they are forced by the urgent need and speed of delivery. “We have to see to the needs of the children and there is a great need in the area. To deliver a brick and mortar school takes about 10 to 14 months. For us to deliver this school before Christmas is not possible because we don’t have the luxury of time. This comes at a huge cost for the community because they feel they are not being involved,” he says explaining that there is minimal work involved. However, few people from the community, about five with a maximum of 10, will be employed for this project. V To page 2.
