Living life to the fullest Tiana-Leigh Smith (13) was diagnosed with a rare lung disease at just three weeks after birth. This sparked the initiative to launch the Tiana-Leigh Lung Foundation, which helps with her medical costs, as well as that of other children with rare lung diseases. A fundraiser to boost the foundation will be held on Friday 28 February. See full story on page 3.
KOEBERG ROAD: A HEALTH CONCERN
Rotting waste piles up KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
F
uming business owners and residents were left with overflowing refuse bins in Koeberg Road, Brooklyn which have allegedly been standing idle for days.
The bins, meant to be emptied three times a week - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - have been uncollected since Monday 17 February and only emptied on Saturday 22 February, according to the business owners. The escalating problem has affected various businesses and residents in Koeberg
Road, amid spiralling complaints which fuelled health concerns. According to Fay Vogel, a resident and community leader, they struggle to cope with a build-up of rotting waste that remains uncollected. “We have reported the issue to the waste
department, but nothing is being done. Even though they emptied the bins, it was still done after a week and it’s a constant occurrence. There is never a set time when the service trucks come and we cannot leave our bins outside at night as it gets stolen.” V To page 2
