Regatta held at Aquatic Club The Milnerton Aquatic Club held their regatta at the weekend with participants braving the strong south easterly wind. Big entries with all kinds of yachts participated. One of the stand out yachts was through a volunteer-driven charity project to make sailing possible for people with disabilities. Pictured is the little optimists class, with an entry of 10 boats their first time participating in a formal regatta. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN
RAISING AWARENESS: STREET DWELLERS TREATED
Homeless Day celebrated KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
T
able View and Milnerton homeless were spoiled on World Homeless Day, an annual event held to raise awareness around those living on the streets. TLC Outreach Projects, a non-profit and welfare organisation, invited all those living on the streets to enjoy a warm meal and other treats. Colleen Pietersen from TLC Outreach Projects said the day was celebrated to bring hope in these trying times and encouraging
the homeless with a powerful word of God. “We celebrated over a lunch, gift bags and TLC cupcakes donated kindly by Diane Rodgers, a volunteer at TLC Outreach Projects, and her mom. “Thank you Lynn and Lynette from Sheltersuit Bags for the gifts. Reaching the homeless on Parklands main, beach front and locals, we introduced the Life Skills programme encouraging them to come off the street and start a new life,” Pietersen said. She said they meet the homeless daily to take their temperatures. “They all sign and complete the details. Hand sanitiser is used
and clean masks given on request. Giving them a cooked meal daily has sustained the homeless during Covid-19. We are hoping that a few will return to the 12 month life skills we offer throughout the year. This includes literacy, computer classes, learner’s, driver’s, job readiness applications, matrix outpatient, mental health issues, social responsibilities, core values and family reintegration,” Pietersen explained. One of the homeless who attended the celebrations, Nigel le Roux (52), said he has been living on the streets for 34 years. “You get to meet different people from all
walks of life. Colleen really does a lot for us roaming the streets of Milnerton and Table View. We are so used to being treated differently, but we all also know why we ended up on the streets. Life is not always easy, but we try to push forward,” Le Roux said. Western Cape Minister for social development, Sharna Fernandez, has also appealed to the public on Saturday 10 October, to join the celebration and help those living on the streets. “The homeless are human beings, like every other person who lives on the planet.
