MILNERTON LAGOON: RESIDENTS THREATEN TO SUE

City to clean up its act TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Several ratepayers’ associations are calling on the City of Cape Town to clean up its act and deal with the polluted Milnerton lagoon.

Milnerton Central Ratepayers’ Association (MCRA) together with other neighbouring ratepayers associations, including

Camps Bay, Milnerton, Summer Greens, Milnerton Ridge and Table View call on the City of Cape Town to do the right thing and protect the water and environment.

The associations accuse the City of ignoring the pollution at the Milnerton lagoon, despite identifying the problem years ago.

The pollution at the lagoon is an end result of what has been happening in other water

bodies that feed to the lagoon.

The ratepayers are demanding urgent action or else they will go the legal route to hold the City accountable. Residents as well as environmental activists have tried for years to get the City to clear pollution in the lagoon.

In 2017, TygerBurger reported on a project to clean the lagoon (“A blue lagoon soon?”,

30 August 2017), but more than two years later, the problem still persists.

At the time the City said R3 million had been set aside to clean the lagoon, while a mega project to eliminate the pollution was going to cost R161 million.

When the MCRA raised the issue this time round, the ward councillor responded.

Caroline Marx, who runs the environmental portfolio of MCRA says the City has repeatedly failed to allocate funds for seven projects identified in their own 2011 report called Improving the Quality of Stormwater Discharging into the Diep River.

“What the City does not acknowledge is the fact that they were well aware of the issues and had identified the need to do something about it, documented the projects required and then did nothing else. The fact is that this disaster has happened under their watch. And it has all been documented. Despite knowing that there are significant problems and challenges the City has not allocated budget to address the issues they identified in their own report,” she says.

Budding chef off to Georgia C

hef Johan Vorster (22) from Table View will be jetting off to the United States this month after being offered a job at a prestigious hotel in Georgia.

Vorster graduated from Capsicum Culinary Studio this year with a diploma in patisserie, and was voted the best student, quite an achievement considering the school has six campuses throughout South Africa.

He has since been offered employment at the newly opened JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District and will be working in different sections of the kitchen.

Talking about this passion for cooking he says: “I used to cook from the age of 10 with my mother and both grandmothers and I knew even then that I wanted to become a chef.”

Vorster first studied towards a diploma in food preparation and cooking at Capsicum, Boksburg in 2017. He worked at various establishments including Mimosa Lodge, 22 Church Street restaurant in Montagu and most recently at The One and Only Hotel in Cape Town, before returning to Capsicum in Cape Town to study for his diploma in patisserie.

He explains: “Over the last few years I decided that I wanted to specialise in pastry.

I love the fact that you can express your creativity and produce breathtaking and tasty

products with even the simplest ingredients such as a crème bruleé.”

He is delighted with what he has achieved this year – a top award and a job at a leading hotel.

“I believe in hard work and that one should never wait to be asked to help, go the extra mile and show that you care and you are dedicated and that you want to learn. Love what you do and put your love and passion into everything you take on in life.”

Vorster says those that want to make a career in the hospitality industry must always remember failure is the key to success.

Adventure club invests in youth TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

T

he Adventure Youth Club held its annual graduation ceremony at Maitland High School on Saturday 7 December. Members were awarded certificates for completion, leadership and outstanding achievements.

The club is a non-profit-company (NPC) for children of all ages.

Started by Maria Strachan in 2013, the club welcomes anyone up to the age of 18.

It started out in Maitland but now has members from Brooklyn and Ysterplaat.

Donald Strachan says the main objective of the club is to uplift the youth.

“Our program consists of weekly Friday afternoon meetings during school terms, where members learn a variety of life skills and talks from guest speakers about a range of topics, such as the dangers of gangs, challenges faced by handicapped people, how to be a good leader, various career choices. We also take them on monthly outings to places of interest or places that they usually would not get to go to,” explains Donald. He says the children learn how to conduct themselves, care about their communities and environment, how to be good leaders and public speaking.

Donald says his wife (Maria) is the passion and drive behind the club.

“For many years she fought a personal battle against addiction and was able to overcome that. She started the club because she desperately wants to prevent children from making similar mistakes, and hopes to show them that they can rise above whatever challenges life may throw at them,” he says.

“For me personally, it has been very re-

warding being involved with the club. Children don’t have the biases and filters that we as adults adopt over the years. They see the world through eyes of hope and wonder, and it is really quite fun taking them on outings,” he says.

Donald says the past year was a good one for the club.

“We were able to secure sponsored transportation through Springbok Atlas, which drastically decreased our travelling costs and has made it possible to take members to places we would otherwise not have been able to. We have had a number of very enjoyable outings, for example, the Zip Zap Circus, hikes up Table Mountain and a fun day at Monkey Town. We have been very fortunate to have support from various individuals and organisations, however, it has been quite challenging at times raising funds. We also became an officially registered NPC this year,’’ he says.

They are already planning for the new year and hope to increase membership at the new Brooklyn chapter, and expand to more schools.

“We are on a mission to guide our youth on to positive life paths. We are convinced that we can change our societies for the better by focusing on our youth, as they will in turn bring about positive change through their lives.

“This really is more than just an investment in a club, it is an investment in our communities and our society as a whole.

Changing the life of even one child for the better can have massive positive implications down the line, and we aim to reach out to as many children as we are able to,” he says.

Knitting for the love of others TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

N

utty Knitters, a group of socially conscious women who either knit or crochet for charity has become a beacon of hope as well as a place of laughter, joy and comfort for the members.

Nutty Knitters was started by Melodie Potgieter in October 2010 when her daughter-in-law passed away, members also offer each other a shoulder to lean on.

“Over and above the fact that we get together to knit, we also talk, laugh and generally socialise. In fact, it would be true to say that Nutty Knitters has been a life saviour for many women who have lost their partners and are feeling bereft and lonely.

“Nutty Knitters provides a home from home for everyone who attends and many firm friendships have been forged among women who were mere stranger, prior to joining our club,” she says explaining that she could not get over her daughter-in-law’s death and tried every treatment known to man.

“Eventually I decided to take control of my life and together with five close friends, I founded Nutty Knitters. Membership is open to everyone who wishes to knit or crochet for charity.

“The only proviso is that they are able to pay our subscriptions of R30 per meeting to cover the purchase of wool, hire of the hall and refreshments.

“We welcome not only highly experienced knitters and crocheters but also those who are novices and wish to improve their skills.

“There are always those who are more than willing to teach and share their know-

ledge,” she says.

Potgieter explains that their objective is to make warm garments to assist those less fortunate.

“We get requests for warm clothing from many sectors and try, insofar as is possible, to help them all.

“The women, (I call them the Nutties) are all extremely passionate about our initiative and always look for ways to assist. In addition to the garments we knit, we also collect used clothing, which is distributed in Wolverivier settlement.

“We also collect stationery, which is donated to the singing policeman, Capt Cyril Dicks, who works extensively with the youth in Atlantis.

“He constantly runs competitions to enable learners to ‘win’ stationery.

“Then we also collect sanitary and toiletery items which are donated to teenage girls. We try to make their goodie bags more appealing by adding a little bling to each one.

“Lastly, we collect non-perishable food items which is distributed to the needy,” she says.

They have a number of beneficiaries like Little Lambs, Ruyterwacht Seniors, Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals in their oncology departments and Karl Bremer and Tygerberg Hospitals in their maternity and premature baby departments.

They meet every second Saturday afternoon at the Milnerton Lions Club House, 109 Milnerton Drive, Milnerton, at 13:45.

Their meetings will resume on Saturday 11 January and they would really welcome anyone who is interested.

‘Entrepreneurs don’t have to go it alone’ TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

eing an entrepreneur can be lonely, tiring and hard work.

Due to lack of support and some with lack of guidance, brilliant ideas never make it.

With all the challenges that entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SME) face, First Business Wellness (FBW) says entrepreneurs and those with ideas don’t have to walk the journey alone. FBW helps and gives guidance to entrepreneurs as it is passionate about enabling SMEs to achieve sustainable growth by offering holistic and affordable service through the expertise of professionals across all business disciplines.

To enforce their commitment to help those in business, FBW launched the Breakfast Club at Dolphin Beach on Thursday 5 December. Entrepreneurs from different areas attended the launch.

The aim of the Breakfast Club is to reach out to entrepreneurs and offer them the opportunity to become part of the growing FBW value chain. FBW chair, Neil Smith, says the aim is to grow entrepreneurs. “SMEs are the muscle of South Africa. They will not give up.

Many businesses have been started, may have failed and there are many that have succeeded. They don’t work normal hours and for most, it is not about the money. SMEs are driven by passion and belief. This has been a dream of mine, to support entrepreneurs,” he says.

Smith explains that many entrepreneurs operate in silos. “Most professionals and expertise are not available, accessible and affordable to small and medium enterprises and operate in silo environments. A brand strategist, lawyer, accountant, PR, and

others focus on their areas of expertise and cannot advise business owners on other critical success factors. That is where FBW comes in. We take a holistic approach with our members. The good news is that entrepreneurs don’t have to be on their own,” he says.

FBW’s fist member, Arnaud Brunel, managing director of Spectoclean, says the support he got from FBW when he was starting his business was top class.

“When I came to South Africa, I had an idea for starting a business. For most people, if you can’t find the support it can be a deal-breaker. When I first met Neil, I was looking for branding for my company. Neil introduced me to FBW. When starting a company, you have to meet different people at different times, but with FBW, it was a seamless collaboration as they have everything under one roof. The lawyers,branding and many other services and you meet them all at the same time, saving lots of time. This allowed me to focus on my business. They really helped me,” he says. “I get to network and be introduced to other members and I’m happy to say that I’m about to finalise another big contract because of the help, connections and the networking that I got through FBW. They help you throughout the way and ensure your business grows,” he says.

The bigger idea with the breakfast club is to give entrepreneurs an opportunity to engage, have an opportunity to network and be able to brainstorm ideas. Smith concludes by saying: “We take care and we hope to take care and help each and every member in the next year and help others as well.

Looking after the beach for the better of everyone.

Getting hands dirty to clean Sunset Beach TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

F

amilies, individuals and groups of friends came out in numbers to clean Sunset Beach on Saturday 30 November.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Trash Bash receives support and help from the Beach Co-op, a non-profit organisation driving behaviour change regarding single-use plastic through surveys and beach clean-ups.

Despite Sunset Beach being littered with only very small pieces of plastic, volunteers managed to collect 43kg of plastic. The top three items from last year’s clean-up also topped the list this year.

These were lollipop sticks - 1 090 found, earbuds - 705 found and individual sweet wrappers - 615 found.

There is a proportional increase in items like chip packets, drinking straws and water bottles after the winter rains, which the organisers believe is an indication that much of the litter on this beach is washed into the ocean with stormwater run-off.

Aquarium says as always, Trash Bash was well-supported.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us this past year and would like to invite them to join us again for Trash Bash 2020,” she says.

Leeuwner says those cleaning stumbled upon several different items. “There were lots and lots of plastic bits, small pieces and larger pieces.

“An inordinate amount of styrofoam and so many earbud sticks and lollipop sticks, it gets difficult to count them after a while. Also, many cigarette filters,” she says adding that is incredibly important to look after the beaches.

“Without a healthy ocean, we cannot have a healthy life on earth. The ocean is the heart of the planet. When we are neglecting or abusing the heart, the whole planet suffers,” she explains.

In 2018 Trash Bash was launched at Sunset Beach and four clean-ups were done there.

“In 2019, we finished off the year’s Trash Bash campaign by returning to Sunset Beach. In 2020, we will again be moving around, and the line-up of beaches has not year been finalised,” she says.

TLC Outreach Projects hosted Christmas parties like no other for the children in three communities they serve on Saturday 7 December.

TLC founder Colleen Pietersen says in Wolwerivier they had over 300 who received a Christmas gift, lunch and lots of fun.

“We had an amazing time with the children as we shared the love of God with our community. Breakfast and lunch were also included.

“Children who attended the party also took home goodie bags with a toy, sweets,

colouring book and crayons. We are blessed to be the change in our communities,” she says.

TLC could also send 75 children to the annual Christmas party hosted by the Rotary Club of Milnerton. “The children had so much fun and were treated so generously.

It is a privilege to partner with organisations that have a heart for the community,”she says.

The other party was in Olive Close were chidren in their programme attended.“We are with these children every week running different programmes so this was a celebration of the work that we do with them and also celebrate Christmas,” she says.

Wanneer vrees jou pootjie Dit maak my altyd ietwat angstig as mense my vra waarvoor ek bang is.

Dis ironies, ek weet: ek’s bang vir ’n lys van dinge waarvoor ek bang is.

Want sien, die meeste mense het een of twee goed wat hulle nagmerries gee. In my geval het ek lyste en lyste van bangmaakgoed. Soms is daar selfs sublyste (party spinnekoppe maak my bang – die a-lys spinnekoppe, maar nie alle spinnekoppe nie – die b-lys spinnekoppe).

Dit is meestal die bekende vrese wat my ook bang maak: slange, hoogtes, misdaad, vinnige karre, groot honde, vlieg, salmonella, vertrappings, donderstorms...eintlik maar alles behalwe narre.

Sit vir iemand ’n rooi neus aan en kleur sy hare helder en ek’s heeltemal fine.

Maar moenie te trots op my raak nie. Ek was ook al bang ek word bang vir narre.

Vrees is meestal ’n nagmerrie (see what I did there?) maar soms, net soms, maak bang(ge)maakstories die beste stories.

Soos die keer toe ek en my man op ons wittebrood Thailand toe is.

Soos genoem, is ek nie mal oor vlieg nie. My man, wat in daardie stadium nog nooit in ’n vliegtuig was nie, het heel heldhaftig belowe om my op te pas. Ek’s byna 100% seker sy presiese woorde was: “Ek sal jou hand styf vashou.”

Ons was skaars in die lug of die kajuitpersoneel kondig aan dat daar groot donderstorms is (nog ’n vrees) en dat ons ’n ruk lank turbulensie sal ervaar. Byna dadelik begin ek hiperventileer en gryp ek die naaste papiersak waarin ek kan asemhaal. Asem in en uit.

Let us end femicide in 2020 Let’s be honest, 2019 has been a rollercoaster ride for South Africans, especially women.

Femicide often topped the Twitter trends lists after one more woman went missing or was found dead at the hands of a man they knew.

As a man, I am disgusted that I am most probably put in the same “men are trash” category with these men that commit such hateful crimes.

But then again, as a gay man, I am relieved that I am seen differently from “straight” men.

You see, growing up in a small township, I was often mocked for being different from other boys. I hated running after a soccer ball or playing with miniature cars, but I did that anyway because I did not want to be teased.

But playing with the boys did not stop them from teasing me because I sucked at those games, I would rather spend my time watch-

ing YoTv, reading a book or helping my grandmother cook. Back to the femicide issue, I am relieved as a gay man that women are more comfortable around me.

Having a drink with my lady friends, they feel comfortable enough to leave their drinks with me because they know that I would not, in any way, try to take advantage of them.

I can pick them up to go out and drop them off at their houses in the early hours of the morning and not once would they feel that I would abduct and/or kill them.

You see, stories of women like Anene Booysen, Karabo Mokoena, Uyinene Mrwetyana and many other women who have died at the hands of men have made men look like creatures. My wish for 2020 is that men do better, gay men included. I hope we do better to protect women and teach young girls that they should not sacrifice their safety for the sake of love.

Sadly, it is alleged that on Friday, 29 November 2019, a woman was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection. I do not know whether or not she was the first victim to die there. Allegedly, the motorist sped through a red robot as they headed towards the direction of Omuramba Road. The car was speeding.

Remedial action by the authorities is required urgently.

Talle motoriste weet boonop nie hoe die “first come, first served”-konsep werk nie. Dis eenvoudig: As jy eerste stilhou, mag jy eerste ry.

Ek hoop ten sterkste dat die kragkrisis binnekort iets van die verlede sal wees.

Die tyd in verkeer is tyd wat ’n mens eerder met jou gesin of familie kon deurbring, of ten minste beter kon benut. Dis regtig onregverdig dat ons as publiek vir die foute van die regering moet boet.

The traffic intersection at Bosmansdam Road and Democracy Drive is now more dangerous to pedestrians than it was before Bosmansdam Road was widened. Since the improvement of this road, it seems as though there are people lurking at this junction in the form of speeding motorists waiting to pounce on innocent pedestrians who go to and from Sable Square.

The widening of Bosmansdam Road to allow free flow of traffic was a good idea.

However, some crazy motorists have found a new race track. Cars are seen speeding alarmingly on this road jeopardising pedestrians.

Life in a multi-generational home Multi-generational living is standard procedure in many cultures, but today’s living challenges are seeing families of all cultures and creeds embracing a co-living environment.

Cape Town’s regional sales manager of the Rawson Property Group, Craig Mott, says it has become common place to see families of three or four generations sharing a home.

“From a financial perspective, it makes perfect sense to combine resources and share living costs, but it also enables families to share things like childcare and care of the elderly, which can be a challenge when people are working full time,” he says.

But that is not to say living with one’s parents or grandparents as an adult is without challenges – particularly if one has grown used to having your own space and are new to a communal living environment.

According to Mott, there are ways to make the transition and general experience much easier for everyone involved.

He shared some of the tips to make the transition easier: Plan your space “A single-family home and a multi-generational home should, ideally, look quite different since each generation really needs a space of their own in which to en-

joy some solitude and privacy.

“Of course, not all of us are lucky enough to have a convenient granny flat to provide easy separation when necessary, but a few minor renovations can be just as effective in a crunch,” he says.

Mott highly recommended adding a small kitchenette and an ensuite bathroom to a second bedroom or living space if possible.

“This gives the elderly, or young professionals living with their parents, the ability to do most daily activities without having to join in with the main house if they do not want to.”

Lay down the ground rules He says one of the biggest bene-

fits of multi-generational living is that all residents can contribute to the household.

According to Mott, those contributions do not always have to be financial, but should be planned and agreed to in advance.

“Unemployment and other financial difficulties are often the reason kids move in with their parents or vice versa. That means it is not always possible for everyone to share expenses and rent equally.

Make sure you discuss finances upfront, as well as other household contributions like cooking, cleaning and childcare, and make sure everyone is happy that they are doing their fair share to add value to the home environment.”

Have a plan in place for conflict resolution Human nature means no home is ever entirely without conflict and having a family member from various generations under one roof means disagreements are bound to arise. According to him having a plan in place for handling situations when they happen is important to keep the peace and make sure everyone feels like their concerns and opinions are being heard. “How you decide to handle conflict may depend on the living arrangements that you have. If one generation is footing the entire bill for the home and all its occupants, on the other hand, they may want the final say.”

Tips for selling a home over the festive season The holiday season can, traditionally, be a tough time to put your home on the market.

Most people’s focus shifts to friends and family and getting away for a well-deserved break, so buyer activity is not usually particularly high. Gauteng regional ma-

Coetzee further says that one’s outstanding loan balance will also help create a cushion against any future interest rate increases and give them more room to manoeuvre if they need to borrow against their home to pay a child’s

university fees or cover a medical emergency.

Other smart ways to spend one’s bonus, Coetzee says, include reducing the balances on high-interest debts such as credit and store card accounts, personal loans and car finance, because the less income one has to use to pay debt instalments, the better they will be able to cope with any increases in the price of essentials like water, electricity, food and transport next year.

“Many schools also offer discounts to parents who pay a year’s fees in advance, and that

can also be a great way to spend a 13th cheque.

“Alternatively, you can put at least part of your bonus into a savings account to provide for home maintenance and repairs.

“This will help you meet home ownership costs over the next 12 months without wrecking your monthly household budget.”

Coetzee says if one’s budget is free of high-interest debt and they have already set aside money for regular maintenance and emergency repairs, it could just be time to start making one’s home improvement dreams a reality.

wo home runs by Dayle Feldtman helped Bothasig Knights maintain their unbeaten run with a 10-6 victory over second-placed Bellville Tygers in their Cape Town Baseball Federation fixture played at the PP Smit Sports field on Saturday 7 December.

Feldtman batted 3/4 including the two home runs, combined with Jared Elario’s eleven strikeouts set up the victory for Bothasig.

Feldtman first homered in the third inning and then again in the nineth inning.

Teammate Justin Lazarus also homered in the third inning.

For Tygers, Jonathan Phillips also homered in the third inning and Wesley Greeff in

the sixth inning. Benjamin Smith (3/5) and Darren Boltman (3/4) were Bothasig’s other top hitters. Jonathan Phillips 3/4, Wesley Greeff (2/4) and Haydn Matthee (2/5) did well for Tygers.

Elario pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and walking two.

He was replaced by former VOB Macaw player Kieran Moore. Moore pitched three innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out two hitters.

Tygers started with usually reliable Kevin Townend who gave up six hits and six walks in his 4.2 innings pitched.

Anthony Phillips pitched 3.1 innings with Jonathan Phillips pitching for the last out.

The win gives Bothasig a four-point lead at the top of the log.

Park, home team Grassy Park Crusaders squandered a 4-0 lead to lose 7-4 to VOB Macaws on Saturday.

Crusaders made six errors compared to the three from VOB. Crusaders also recorded four double plays compared to the two of VOB. Derick Baylis (4/6), Lance Gordon (2/5) and Josh Rich (2/5) came out top for VOB with Liam Samuels (2/4), Sergill Thompson (2/4) and Fabian Matthee (2/4) hitting well for Crusaders.

Both teams utilised three pitchers.

In other Major League results, the home teams took the points.

Athlone A’s beat Van der Stel 9-3 and Maitland Giants had the better of Durbanville Villains 13-2 in a match mixed with controversy and emotions.

In the Promotion League, Helderberg Pirates beat Thistle 10-2 in a close game at Radloff Park in Somerset West.

Seven runs from five hits, one error, a walk and a hit by pitch swung the game in Pirates favour after they held a slender 3-2 lead.

Kieran Clackett and Darryn Chalmers shared the pitching duties for Pirates. Revan Plaatjies, Gavin Jefferies and Keagan Watson did duty for Thistle.

In other Promotion League results, Lansdowne Eagles beat Silvertree Titans 14-4 and Westridge Yankees beating Battswood 21-5.

Surprise personal grading for MMA studio Learners at the CJA Jiu-Jitsu Academy perform push-ups during their grading ceremony recently.

Jiu-Jitsu grading takes place The biggest Jiu-Jitsu grading to be held in South Africa transpired over the weekend of 29 and 30 November.

More than 238 people ranging from five years to over 50 graded for from first (white) belt to black belt.

Combat Jiu-Jitsu Academy (CJA), the oldest Jiu-Jitsu school in South Africa, hosted the event.

A typical grading lasts about an hour, but someone wanting to grade for their black belt needs to do so over five days.

This year two students graded for their black belts while one graded for a brown belt.

CJA has a strong ethos of giving back, and once again, a donations trailer was placed outside the grading venue, Durbanville Primary School.

The trailer was filled by the generous parents and students of CJA, and the donations will be given to U-Turn homeless ministries.

The Boa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) studio had a surprise personal grading with Prof Nathan Raaths recently.

“We are an affiliation of Prof Marcello Monteiro de la Riva system of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” says Graham “The Boa” Turner.

He explains that, at present, there are only three black belts in this system on the African continent and that he is honoured to become the latest black belt in this system.

Turner has been involved in martial arts for 35 years and has a fifth degree black belt in combat Jiu Jitsu, having competed in the 1990s in bare knuckle vale Judo competitions, moving into mixed martial arts and professional Thai boxing.

Biggest youth T20 tournament set to start

Awqaf SA, in association with Primrose Cricket Club, will host the fourth annual T20 youth cricket tournament from Monday 16 December to Thursday 19 December.

A record 68 teams from the u.11 to u.17 age categories for girls as well as 150 mini-cricketers will take to the field in what has become the largest T20 Youth Cricket Tournament of its kind in South Africa.

This year’s event is of added significance as it will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death in detention of Imam Abdullah Haron.

“Imam Haron was not only a religious leader and political activist who gave his life in advocating social justice, but he was also an avid sportsman who played a significant role in non-racial sport,” Awqaf deputy CEO and tournament convenor, Mickaeel Collier, explained.

The T20 Youth Cricket Tournament started in 2016 and is hosted in association with Primrose Cricket Club and held under the patronage of Cricket South Africa vice-president, Beresford Williams, and Western

Province Cricket Association CEO, Nabeal Dien.

Collier said the tournament is aimed at giving equal opportunity to our youth, irrespective of their economic and social backgrounds.

“In this day and age so much participation in sporting events is reserved for only those who have the funds. Our tournament is a family-friendly event that aims to embody all the positive values of post-apartheid South Africa… we have deliberately chosen to remain at grassroots level.”

“The four-day tournament aims to promote social cohesion and is designed to give the young players a sense of cricket heritage that instills within them the values of social justice via sport,” he said. He called on the community to come out and support the young cricketers who will play at the Primrose Cricket Club and neighbouring fields in Chukker Road in Kenwyn and Rylands.
