Job seekers on Langverwacht and Station roads in Kuils River are literally now left stranded, after the project aimed at helping these men on the side of the road under the jurisdiction of Subcouncil 21, has been canned due to insufficient funding. This announcement was made by Samuel Chademana, an official of the Department of Economic Development (DED) during last week’s local subcouncil meeting. Chademana mentioned this fact during his presentation on the issue of job seekers. He said after going through the

documents on the project for the job seekers, he has decided the way the project is formulated, is not addressing the real issue. Chademana said the fact that the overall concept was not sound; short-term in nature; did not provide sustainable security for people, and was based on the policing of people off the streets where all reasons for the project to be discontinued. He highlighted the need for a programme which looked at long-term skills development and job security. Chademana mentioned an example of a similar project that was launched in Subcouncil 22, aimed at skills training and employment.

“I would suggest this programme as a replacement for the Men on the Side of the Road Project.” He said this new project would aid in securing more permanent jobs for these people. The challenge however was sourcing the funding for the project. Chademana said the DED had to source funding for all new projects as no funding was forecoming from the subcouncil as was the case in the past. Last year TygerBurger reported on the Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) organisation halting its work in Kuils River. One of the main reasons for their withdrawal from the area, given by

Peter Kratz, director of the organisation at the time, was also the lack of funding from the subcouncil. TygerBurger spoke to some of the job seekers in Langverwacht Road to get their opinion on the discontinuation of the project. Some of them come from as far as Eerste River, Mfuleni and Blue Downs to seek employment. Most agree they have an urgent need to provide for families and are therefore not in favour of a longterm training project. “I decided to come here to look for work, because if I go to companies, the security at the gate immediately tells you there are no jobs. You can’t even get to see the people in the office, to drop off your CV. So this is

why I come here,” said Gerhard Beukes, a qualified Code 10 driver. He says at the moment standing on the side of the road looking for work is the only option he has as the only breadwinner for his family. Mark Hendricks, another job seeker is a qualified plumber and equally despondent. He registered with the Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) project a few years back when they attempted to work in Kuils River by adding all the men’s details to their database. “They were going to introduce us to people who we could work for,” Hendricks said. “Nobody helps us now, we don’t get work here. We stand here the whole day.”

Huise loop deur onder diewe week suksesvol ’n inbreker op heterdaad in ’n woning betrap het, nadat ’n waaksame buurvrou van die Voëlvlei-gebied die polisie ontbied het, toe sy hoor haar bure se huisalarm gaan af. Die polisie het met hul aankoms die inbreker binne die huis aangetref, die sakkies met gesteelde goedere reeds gepak. Die inbreker het toegang tot die woning verkry deur een van die vensters te verwyder. Hy is nog met handskoene aan sy hande deur die span in hegtenis geneem. “Mense wat enige verdagte persone sien, moet ons bel. Laat weet ons net, al kom ons verniet uit,” is Daniels se versoek. Die ander probleem is nog steeds die roof van mense op straat. “Mense moet nie eeneen loop nie maar verkieslik in groepe.” Volgens Daniels is daar nog steeds mense wat op selfone loop en praat wat beroof word. “Daar is steeds mense wat waardevolle artikels in motorvoertuie los,” sê Daniels oor die aantal diefstel uit motorvoertuie wat hulle ondervind.

Eiendomsgerigte misdade blyk nog steeds die grootste kommer vir die Kuilsrivier-polisie van die sektor twee-polisiëringsgebied te wees. Met die aantal huisbrake, rowe en diefstal uit motorvoertuie, sê sektorhoof ao. Gerome Daniels, is dit nou selfs belangriker vir inwoners om waaksaam vir verdagte optrede te wees. Sektor twee se gebiede sluit in: Kalkfontein, Sarepta, Oakdene, Navic Park, Deshampton, Brandwood, Mabillepark, Marindapark, Voëlvlei en Kuilsrivier se sakegebied. The athletics track at the Bellville Velodrome will not be excluded from the development currently under way, but the option to re-locate the track in future is a possibility. This option is being investigated so as to adequately respond to the city’s desire for a new CBD node. Hein Ehlers, managing director of the Velodrome developers, Devmark, said this

week an athletics track in the centre of a planned central business hub will be out of context, which is why provision to exclude the track from the Velodrome is made only for the distant future. Uncertainty whether or not the athletics track will survive the development of the Bellville Velodrome has prompted a local councillor to submit a motion to halt the project. The motion was submitted by Andrea Crous, councillor of Ward 70, at a subcouncil meeting last week. An application for the rezoning of the Velo-

drome was approved by the De Grendel Subcouncil in May 2011. At the time, it was stipulated in the Broader Tyger Valley Urban Design Framework and Guidelines that the existing athletics track at the Velodrome continue to function as an outdoor recreational space. It was suggested its existing size be reduced and converted into a series of terraced public open spaces that link Carl Cronjé Road and Willie van Schoor Avenue. When the same application was brought before the subcouncil just more than a year later, the wording was changed to such an extent that the proposal indicated the existing athletics track was to be converted into a series of terraced public open spaces. “We had meeting after meeting about the timeframe of the development and when the sport clubs can start to move back, but meanwhile they (city officials) are making fools of us,” Crous said last week. At the council meeting, Crous asked the process to be brought to a halt, until answers have been obtained as to what the truth is. She blames city of Cape Town officials, as they were responsible for tender conditions, the rezoning application and the compilation of the broader Tyger Valley framework. “If the Bellville track was to disappear, where would athletes practise?” she asked. Crous is very concerned that this will result in the suburb losing many of its star athletes.

Doreen Swiegers (75) se “kopstories” is nou beskikbaar vir almal wat graag amusante staaltjies geniet. TygerBurger het by dié skrywer gaan inloer. Doreen, tuis by die Andante-aftreeoord in Kuilsrivier en geklee in ’n diep koningsblou sy-en-satyn-uitrusting, skep onmiddellik die indruk van ’n interessante, kunstige siel. Haar helderpienk halsnoer verklap ook ’n vrydenkende en ondeunde mens wat nie vir oudword skrik nie. Doreen se boek Die vrou met die Rooi Baret is pas uitgegee. Doreen, oorspronklik van die Oos-Kaap, wat ná haar aftrede in Tergniet (in die Suid-Kaap) gaan woon het, se boek bestaan uit 25 kortverhale. Dit is juis hier in die Suid-Kaap waar sy weens haar dinamiese en vermaaklike storievertellery bekendgestaan het as die “storievrou”. Sy is egter nie ’n groentjie wanneer dit by skryfwerk kom nie. Haar kortverhale en versies het al verskyn in die 1960’s in die Die Voorligter, vandag bekend as die Lig-tydskrif. Sy het ook vroue-rubrieke geskryf en radio-voorlesings van haar eie skryfwerk gedoen. “Al die jare skryf ek stories, die goed kom net in my kop. My brein vergeet niks, hy stoor alles diep en word gewoonlik geprikkel wanneer daar spesifieke goed gebeur,” sê sy oor die oorsprong van die inhoud van haar boek. Doreen, wat ’n agtergrond in toneelspel (veral eenvrou-vertonings) en afrigting het, sê boeke en musiek is van haar grootste passies. Die dag toe die eindproduk van haar maandelange werk deur haarself en die redigeerder en uitgewer van die boek, prof. Lizette Rabe, op 16 Mei verskyn het, was vir haar ’n onvergeetlike oomblik. “Ek is baie dank aan Lizette verskuldig. Sy is ’n ongelooflike vrou wat my baie gehelp het met die manuskrip.” Haar boek bevat snaakse verhale wat handel oor katte, oudword, maskers, liefde en sommer maar net snaakse lewenservaringe.

‘Simposium ’n belewenis’ CARMEN JACOBS

“Dit was vir ons ’n belewenis. Ek was spellbound. Terwyl ek na die jongmense geluister het, het dit by my opgekom dat die fokus op die politieke betekenis van Jeugdag is. Dit is reg so, maar daar is so baie ander dinge ook.” Só sê Marius Burger, skoolhoof van die Jan Krielskool vir leerders met gestremdhede in Kuilsrivier. Hy voel dat die jeug met gestremdhede ook een van die fokuspunte van Jeugdag moet wees. Die Jan Krielskool het vanjaar tydens Jeugdag op 16 Junie die eerste keer ’n jeugsimposium by hul skool aangebied. Die jeugsimposium het ’n propvol program gehad, waartydens leerlinge van skole regoor die Kaap byeengekom het om meer oor leerders met gestremdhede te leer. Marius sê die leerlinge van die ander skole moes in rolstoele sit, hul oë is toegemaak en hulle moes ervaar hoe jongmense met gestremdhede leef.

Die spesiale gas, Michaela (Chaeli) Mycroft van die Chaeli-veldtog, het die jeug toegespreek. “Ek was van plan om nie na die hele dag se program te luister nie, maar toe ek hoor wat die leerlinge kwytraak, het ek gebly. Daar het by my soveel trots en waardering vir ons kinders opgekom. Dit was ongelooflik,” het Marius gesê. Die jeugsimposium se tema was “Tata stigma” en hy sê daar is persepsies oor leerlinge met gestremdhede verander. “Wat ons betref het ons Jeugdag-vieringe beslis ’n ander kleur gekry.” Die Jan Krielskool in Kuilsrivier vier vanjaar hul 75ste bestaansjaar en die jeugsimposium was die hoogtepunt en afsluiting van die vieringe. Martin Samuel, koördineerder van die dag se program, het saamgestem dat die simposium ’n reuse-sukses was. Die program het ook arbeidsterapeute, voormalige leerlinge van Jan Kriel en ook ander gaste gehad wat die behoeftes van gestremdes bespreek het en hoe om so ’n leerder te identifiseer in ’n hoofstroomskool.

Van die leerlinge van die Jan Krielskool by Michaela (Chaeli) Mycroft. Michaela het die jeug gemoti veer met haar toespraak van hoop.

Jeug op dwelmgevare gewys Die vrolikheid van die Jeugmaand en Jeugdagvieringe het ook in die strate van Sarepta weerklink. Jeugdagverrigtinge van die sektor 2-subforum in samewerking met die plaaslike gemeenskapspolisieforum (GPF) het op Saterdag 16 Junie op ’n koue wintersoggend afgeskop met ’n optog deur lede van die forum, buurtwag en gemeenskapslede. Die optogroete was deur die strate van Sarepta tot by die Mimosastraat-speelpark. Die groepie optoggangers het hul misnoeë op plakkate uitgespreek oor dwelmmisbruik, een van die grootste euwels wat die toekoms van die jeug kniehalter. Past. Martin Burke, voorsitter van die sektor 2-subforum, sê oor die Jeugdagprogram: “Die doel was hoofsaaklik om die jeug bewus te maak van dwelms, alkoholmisbruik en bendegeweld.” Hy sê hiervan is dwelmmisbruik die grootste probleem onder jeugdiges. “As ons kyk na die misdaadstatistiek dan glo ons die outjies steel en breek in om hul dwelmgewoonte te bevredig. Dit

is hoekom ons die jeug van die gevare wil bewus maak en aan hulle wys dat hulle verder in die lewe kan kom.” Hy sê hul boodskap aan die jeug was ook dat hulle nie dwelms moet gebruik nie, hulle moet vry voel om op te staan teen dwelms, dit nie in hulle buurte te verdra nie en dit aan die lig te bring. Dwelms veroorsaak dat baie jongmense nie hul drome verwensenlik nie. “Ons het ook die samewerking van die polisie en die gemeenskap probeer uitbeeld. “Die gemeenskap moet vry voel om met die polisie te kom praat as hulle probleme ondervind.” Burke sê sprekers vir die dag is gekies om spesifiek oor dwelmmisbruik, die gevare en nadele daarvan te praat en die jeug bewus te maak dat daar wel hoop vir hul toekoms is. Die demonstrasie deur die honde-eenheid was die groot trekpleister van die die dag, sê Burke. Hy sê hulle sou graag die opkoms van jeugdiges wou verhoog om sodoende die boodskap wyer te kan uitdra.

From war, love blooms and flourishes CARMEN JACOBS

Cupid’s arrows were flying straight and true when the dashing British officer and the red-haired Afrikaner meisie met in 1941. Was it love at first sight? “Absolutely,” says Harold Coombes, an Englishman, as he reveals that on Wednesday 4 July he will be celebrating 70 years of wedded bliss to the girl of his dreams. It’s a love story that started in the dark days of World War II in 1941, and is still going strong. Harry (92), and his wife, Britta (90) reside at the Andante Retirement Village, in Kuils River, and when you meet them it’s easy to see the love in their union is stronger than ever. Harry says when he met Alberta or Britta, as she is known, he knew she was the one for him. “We just clicked,” he says about the Good Friday in 1941 when he first laid eyes on her. He was a member of the Royal Air Force at the time. Britta, born in Prince Albert, in the Karoo, recalls Harry was a bit hesitant to meet her, after his friends’ attempt to arrange a meeting between the two of them. When the pair finally met, Harry says: “She immediately felt the same way.” Britta wowed him with her natural beauty. “She had this beautiful long, red hair, so wavy and natural which I loved, and she was so natural,” he describes his first impressions of Britta. And what was it that made Britta fall in love with him? “She just loved me,” he says as Britta gives a knowing wink. Harry quickly adds that the deal was sealed when six months after they met, Britta took him home to Prince Albert to meet her parents. Her mother immediately approved their union. “Her mother was very Afrikaans but

somehow we communicated and it didn’t take her as long as 10 minutes to sum things up. “I went back to the dining room, her mum called her and said: ‘If you marry this man tomorrow you have my blessing’.” Harry is proud to say that this judgement of character proved to be everlasting. The couple wed on Britta’s 21st birthday in Mossel Bay and settled in George. This year she turns 91 as they celebrate their anniversary, and even though she suffers from Alzeheimer’s disease, the couple still enjoy a fulfilling union. Britta still enjoys singing and during the interview she was happily humming along. Harry says the first song she sang to him in her beautiful voice was, “My Hero chocolate soldier” - and the words of the song still ring true for them. Patricia Joubert, one of the caregivers at Andante says the true love the couple share is a sterling example to them. “They are a mirror to us who are still newlywed.” She added that the Coombes’ favourite pastime is to sing and listen to music together. The couple recall a number of highlights over the years, the birth of their children and their two visits to England, (when Harry could show off his beautiful South African wife) as some of the happiest times. Advice to younger couples for a happy and lasting union? “It’s about give and take, you constantly need to adjust to each other and remember there is more than one way of doing things.” Britta, who was more talkative than Harry was also good at making friends. “We were very fortunate to have good friends, she did most of the friend-making,” says Harry. The couple have two sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Die eerste Brackenfell-sakekamer het verlede Dinsdagaand die lig gesien onder die banier van die AHI Okavango-sakekamer, en terselfdertyd hul eerste bestuursraad verkies. Die AHI Okavango-sakekamer sal voortaan ’n netwerkforum bied vir ondernemings in die munisipale gebiede van Brackenfell en Kuilsrivier, en groot opgewondenheid heers oor die nuwe inisiatief. Volgens raadsheer Marian Nieuwoudt het dié inisiatief nuwe energie in die plaaslike georganiseerde sakeforum geblaas, met ’n jong en dinamiese bestuursraad. Aan die stuur van sake is voorsitter Phillip van Zyl van Bolt Risk Management, met Anna-Marie Alkema van Allmusic as sekretaris. Ingrid Coetzee van die AHI Tygerberg-sakeka-

mer sal as administrasiehoof optree terwyl Tienie le Roux, voorsitter van die Tygerbergtak as bestuurslid sal dien. Morné Louwrens, Ilse Els, Gabrie Spies, George Ferriera en Xavier Smith is die ander lede. “Ons onmiddellike doelwit is om plaaslike ondernemings te betrek by ons netwerk om sodoende ons sake te bevorder. Daarna kan aandag gegee word aan doelwitte van sakebelang op mediumtermyn,” sê Van Zyl. Een so ’n doelwit is die stigting van ’n stadsverbeteringsdistrik in Brackenfell se sentrale sakegebied. TygerBurger en Solidariteit Helpende Hand in Wes-Kaap het tydens Helpende Hand se 110 Doen-Goed-projekteveldtog saamgespan om die blyplek van verskeie inwoners van die Eric Miles- Cheshire-tehuis vir gestremde volwassenes in Milnerton op te knap. “Ons het opgelet dat die inwoners van die tehuis dikwels afhanklik is van die staat se karige ongeskiktheidspensioen,” sê Erika Botha-Rossouw, Helpende Hand se WesKaap-streekorganiseerder. Die Helpende Hand-streekkantoor het reeds in 2011 by die tehuis betrokke geraak saam met Liret Swanepoel en haar groep vrywilligers. Tydens die week van die 110 Doen-Goedprojekteveldtog het dié groep besluit om van

die manlike inwoners se kamers te verbeter. Ingeboude kaste met werkstasies, klein yskassies, gordynrelings en nuwe beddegoed is verskaf. Die Lions se Tygerberg Hills- en De Grendel-takke het verf geborg en TygerBurger en Hirsch’s het drie platskerm-TV’s met TV-arms geskenk. “Ons is nog op soek na iemand wat maandeliks vir die mans toiletware kan verskaf en hulle heffings kan betaal,” sê Botha-Rossouw. “Ons wil graag nog 30 kamers by die tehuis opgradeer en is op soek na borge wat hiermee kan help.” Die borge se name sal op ’n plaatjie by elke kamer aangebring word en Artikel 18A-belastingsertifikate kan uitgereik word vir die skenkings. Groot sonde teen kinders gepleeg Aan die een kant het ons kinders wat al hoe minder van skoolboeke afhanklik is. Aan die ander kant het ons kinders wat nog nooit skoolboeke gehad het nie. Eersgenoemde groep is so bevoorreg omdat die klaskamer en die huis al hoe meer elektronies word. Hulle spoed die moderne wêreld in, toegerus met al die gereedskap wat nodig is om dit te oorwin. Die ander groep het buiten handboeke, soms nie eens elektrisiteit en lopende water by die skool nie. Hulle gaan ook op ’n honger maag skool, nadat hulle baie ver gestap het om by die skool te kom. Hulle is nie net hopeloos toegerus vir die toekoms nie, maar het bykans geen hoop om ooit die inligtingstroom te haal nie. En die regering sê die wat het, moet hulle rykdom meer en meer verdeel, maar teen die middel van die jaar het al sy kinders, hulle wat nie kan stem nie, nog nie eens handboeke om basiese kennis mee op te doen nie. Regeringsamptenare is selfs daarvoor verantwoordelik dat skoolboeke in Limpopo verbrand word. Terwyl private maatskappye miljoene stort in die opheffing van skole, sit die regering terug en gee nie ’n flenter om oor hoe hy onskuldiges se toekoms opfoeter nie. Dis ’n groot sonde wat teen kinders gepleeg word, kinders wat geen kans het om ooit voor te kom in die voortsnellende lewe nie. En wie gaan dan na hulle kyk?

Honde beheer seuns Ek stem met ’n bekommerde ouerhart saam met vorige skrywers oor die hondekwessies. Ek is ’n tuisbly-mamma en gaan stap gereeld met my kinders in die area. Dit het nou al ’n paar keer gebeur dat ons tienerseuns met hulle pitboels raakloop. My hart gaan staan wanneer ek sien hoe hierdie honde eerder die eienaar beheer as andersom. Hierdie jongmanne sit ook met hul honde op die winkelstoep waar die pitboels vir ’n ieder en elk blaf.

Is dit nie aggressie aanwakker nie? En nog veel erger, hulle laat die honde los rondhardloop op die speelparkie (waar my kinders wil speel)! Ek moet nou 10 keer dink voor ons besluit om te gaan stap, ’n voorreg wat ek my kinders ontneem word omdat hierdie jongmanne “dink” hulle is in beheer van hierdie honde. Dis juis omdat hierdie honde in klein areas opgehok word en gesien word as ’n waghond, sonder genoeg menslike interaksie of liefde, dat hierdie honde aggressief raak. Ek het al groot honde vandat ek ’n klein dogtertjie was, en nog nooit het een van hulle aggressief geword nie. Hulle beskerm ons omdat hulle lief is vir ons en deel is van ons huishouding – hulle

At the new Engen garage and convenience store in Wellington Road in Durbanville, just look at what is parked in front of the disabled bays! I couldn’t resist taking a photo to show others that there is just no concern or common sense sometimes from able-bodied people. However, it is a great garage. Even the garage attendants laughed and agreed with me that it was really a daft place to place their boards. Help others in cold winter Winter is definitely upon us. As temperatures drop and the rain gets heavier, I can’t help but spare a thought for the people of Cape Town who will be left out in the cold. I am thankful for my warm bed and the layers of clothes and blankets I can pile on – I wouldn’t want to put on a heater, that would be wasting electricity. While I wish I could help every homeless person in the peninsula, I know I, like many others, cannot afford to.

There are however organisations that can help us help others. Blankets 4 Cape Town for instance are in their third year of collecting blankets for the greater Cape Town area. Headline acts sign up David Kramer and Elvis Blue are the latest artists to jump aboard for this year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert. In its 10th year, the concert takes place on Sunday 29 July with a whole lot of firsts in the line-up for the show at the Bellville Civic Centre. First-timers on the bill include Laurika Rauch, Adam, Idols winner Heinz Winckler and of course, Elvis Blue. TygerBurger is the media sponsor for the concert, now a fixture on the Cape Town calendar, which raises funds for different charities each year. Kevin het ’n sagte plekkie vir bejaardes Doen aan ander wat jy aan jouself gedoen wil hê. Dit is die sanger Kevin Leo se lewensmotto. En dit is hoekom Kevin sy Godgegewe talent gebruik om mense se lewens te verryk. Dit is veral bejaardes wat hom na aan die hart lê. Van 2009 af het Kevin gemiddeld 25 keer per maand gratis by aftreeoorde opgetree. En elke keer was die terugvoer fenomenaal. Kevin vertel van een voorval wat hom net weer eens laat besef het hoe musiek grense kan verskuif en lewens kan verander. “By die een aftreeoord waar ek gesing het, was daar ’n oom in die gehoor wat vir tien jaar al nie ’n geluid gemaak het nie. Niemand kon tot hom deurdring nie. Ek’t ná my optrede gehoor die oom het terwyl ek gesing het, begin saamneurie. En toe begin hy saamsing. En toe, ná al die jare, begin hy weer te praat. Dis hoekom ek doen wat ek doen. Ek wil met my sang mense se lewens verryk, vir mense hoop gee.” Kevin is deesdae ’n Mosselbaaier ná 20 jaar in Gauteng. Hy was net homself. “Ek voel eintlik skuldig dat ek betaal word om net myself te wees en pret te hê op die koop toe!” Kevin se lewe is duidelik volgepak, maar hy’t aan homself belowe dat hy nie sy “liefdadigheidsprojek” – die baie keer vergete bejaardes in ons samelewing – sal afskeep nie. ’n Eersterivierinwoner, Julian Davids, is die eerste wenner van die Stad Kaapstad en Tra ceOnline se veldtog waar bewoners van stad skemahuise ’n kans staan om pryse te wen. Hier ontvang Julian haar prys van John Wil lemse van TraceOnline en die akteur Marlo Minnaar.

‘Betaal vir jou verblyf en wen’ Die eerste wenner van ’n veldtog vir bewoners van stadskema-huise is onlangs bekendgemaak. Met die afskop van die veldtog, Let’s Pay to Stay, deur die Stad Kaapstad en die maatskappy TraceOnline, staan eienaars en huurders van munisipale huise die kans om pryse te wen indien hulle huurgeld betaal, reëlings tref om agterstallige bedrae te skik, of aansoek doen om ’n deernistoelae. Die veldtog bestaan ook uit roadshows wat elke Saterdagoggend by verskeie winkelsentrums in die Skiereiland gehou word. Hier kan mense groot pryse wen as hulle hul ID-dokument en bewys van betaling kan verskaf. Die heel eerste wenner was Julian Davids van Kleinvlei, Eersterivier, wat ’n mikrogolfoond gewen het. “Ek het gewen want ek is nie ’n free rider nie,” het Davids oor haar prys gesê. Die volgende roadshow sal by die Promenade-winkelsentrum in Mitchell’s Plain op 7 Julie tussen 11:00 en 12:00 gehou word. Die bekende sanger, Doctor Victor, sal tydens dié byeenkoms optree. Almal wat stad-skemahuise gekoop het of huur, word genooi om hul ID-dokument en bewys van betaling saam te bring na die Promenade-winkelsentrum om ’n kans te staan om van die groot pryse te wen. Die Stad Kaapstad en TraceOnline wil met die veldtog verhoed dat huurders en eienaars nie hul huise verloor nie. You can’t help but do just that when this jazz band starts playing. Their combination of sultry vocals and technical playing forces you to stop and take in their modern sound. Mamela, the resident jazz band at Plaasteater, is made up of Marius Doubell on bass, Fred Koch on keyboards, Romeo Jacobs on drums and Johan Seim on guitar, with his daughters, Raylene on sax and Rozane on vocals. The band has been together for about four months and when asked how they got together, Fred says: “Slowly.” The short version is that Marius was asked to put a band together for jazz events at Plaasteater. He made contact with Johan and his daughters and met Fred and Romeo at Plaasteater, and the rest, as they say, is history, Now the band plays monthly, on the third Saturday of every month, for Jazz jive opi plaas, at Hazendal. “We are holding back,” Marius points out. He says Mamela wants to grow their repertoire and polish their performances before they play outside the Plaasteater. Their first gig away from the venue will be in September when

Romeo Jacobs is absent. they play the Citrusdal local food festival. “If you look at Plaasteater, it’s a theatre, which allows us to discipline ourselves before we go out there,” Rozane says. “It’s good stage experience,” Marius says. Mamela plays a mixture of originals and covers, which they rearrange to fit their style. “We have a mature sound,” Marius says. Many of the originals were written before and brought to the band who then tackled arrangements together. “Every individual has their own experiences,” Marius points

out, before rattling off the list of names the band members have played with. The list ranges from Anton Goosen and Mungo Jerry to the late Robbie Jansen and Tyler Perry. They have included a Jazz Jam to their shows at Plaasteater, where they provide the opportunity for people who want to play, but have no place to, to get on stage. Their next performance is on Saturday, from 14:00. There will be food and drink for sale, as well as braai facilities on offer. Entrance is free. Die aanspreek van voedseltekorte is die kern waarom ’n private groentetuin-projek, die geesteskind van ’n Bellville-inwoner, draai. Met dié projek van Johann van den Heever, wat hy Veggie Services noem, sluit hy aan by die Wes-Kaapse landbouafdeling se geïntegreerde voedselsekuriteitstrategie. Dié strategie bepaal onder meer dat voedselprodusering en -handel verhoog, voedsaamheid en voedselveiligheid verbeter, en dat inkomste gegenereer en werk geskep moet word. ’n Ooreenkoms is gesluit tussen Johann en die Wes-Kaapse landbou-afdeling om ’n inkomste-geleentheid vir opgeleide stedelike boere daar te stel, in ruil vir hul kennis, tyd en ondervinding. Volgens die ooreenkoms om van die stedelike boere gebruik te maak en vir die diens om te realiseer, het Johann nodig om met die hulp van inwoners, ’n minimum van 100 groentetuine in ’n gemiddelde en hoëklasgebied te begin. Betrokkenes wat hulle eie groente/vrugte wil verbou, word tans in twee groepe gevisualiseer – inwoners wat deur Veggie Services ’n regvoorbereide groentetuin by hul huis begin en dit dan self wil bestuur, en mense wat ’n bykomende maandelikse bedrag betaal vir ’n groentetuin wat by hul huis begin en dan deur ’n stedelike boer onderhou word. Johan verduidelik hoe die groentetuin-projek werk. “Jy kies ’n metode waarvan jy hou. Daar is verskeie om van te kies en kan wissel van ’n tonnel na ’n verhewe groentetuin of selfs ’n Aquaphonic-stelsel.” Aquaphonics behels die kweek van vis en plante saam in ’n gekonstruktueerde, hersirkulerende ekosisteem, deur die gebruik van natuurlike bakteriële siklusse om visafval na plantvoedingstowwe om te skakel. Die beste gebied word dan in ’n persoon of meenthuis se tuin gekies, waarna die tuintjie

Slegs een persoon werk per gebied, wat beteken dat indien jy, jou buurman en ander persone in die gebied van die diens gebruik maak, sien dieselfde persoon om na almal se groentetuine. Wat koste betref, is die idee om jou huidige groentekoste eenvoudig te vervang met hierdie diens. Hierdie is ’n wen-wen-situasie, volgens Johann. “Al het jy nie tyd of groen vingers nie, het jy toegang tot vars vrugte en groente uit jou eie tuin, en dit met behulp van die stedelike boer se tyd en ondervinding. The City of Cape Town has launched a new travel programme to deal with growing exhaust emissions caused by commuters. The new programme, called Smart, is focused on getting commuters to use more sustainable options such as public transport, lift clubbing (carpooling) or active mobility (non-motorised options such as walking or cycling). “The increased congestion on our roads, particularly as a result of Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV) use, is not sustainable. SOVs are energy inefficient and contribute significantly to emissions, which impact on local air quality, our health and global climate change, not to mention to the huge hole they leave in the pockets of commuters due to the high price of fuel and parking,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater Councillor Brett Herron. The Travel Smart Programme aims to reduce SOV use, reduce the total kilometres travelled, reduce vehicle emissions, reduce costs for commuters and reduce the day-to-day stress of sitting in traffic. Youngest under21 hockey star Tarryn Glasby, a Grade 11 student at El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville, recently became the youngest person to be selected to represent South Africa in the u-21 South African Hockey Squad. The Junior World Cup will be played in India next year. After the recent national squad training camps and u-21 Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) held in Pretoria, Tarryn was selected to the 23-player squad to represent SA in the qualifying matches for the Junior World Cup. She is one of five representing Western Province. Tarryn responded to the news modestly, saying: “Hard work always pays off.” Tarryn’s mesmerising skill, executed with scorching pace and lethal finishing, made an impact in 2012 when she represented WP at the u-21 IPT in Pretoria, netting 10 goals for WP and resulting in Tarryn being named the top goal scorer and also the most promising player. Tarryn is no stranger to playing

in higher leagues, having played in hockey teams one or two age groups higher than her own since primary school. She has represented WP since 2007 and at the tender age of 14 made her WP Women’s Grand Challenge debut, turning out for the Durbanville women’s hockey team. In 2010 she was selected for the SA u-16 high performance squad. The following year she retained her SA u-16 status with a clinical 10-goal spree as vice-captain of the Western Province team at the 2011 IPT. She rounded off this remarkable achievement with three awards: IPT winner’s medal, top goal scorer, and the most promising striker. The inevitable call-up to the 2012 national u-21 women’s hockey squad training camps came shortly thereafter. Tarryn also represents her school team, where she is coached by her mother, Tracey Glasby. The hockey spokesperson for El Shaddai, Tess Rodrigues, said she is excited for Tarryn, and is looking forward to Tarryn unleashing her sensational strike-rate in the international arena.

For most golfers the dream of playing the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland will remain just that, but for Hugo du Toit this dream will become a reality this week. Du Toit (Bellville) will represent South Africa in the World One-arm Open Championship from 30 June to 6 July.

St Andrews is widely regarded as the cradle of the game. This year golfers from 27 countries will tee off in this the 75th edition of the tournament which was originally founded to accommodate soldiers wounded in World War I. Says Du Toit: “I’m cerebrally disabled in the left side of my body, so I can only play with my right hand. Golf is my passion in life and I will

be forever grateful for the opportunities this game has presented me. “I’ve had the privilege to work at Fancourt, Arabella and DeZalze which are some of the premier clubs in the country,” he says. “In previous championships we played on some spectacular courses in Ireland and Scotland. “I’ve made it to the semi-finals on three occasions and won our South

African One-arm Championship in 1998, 1999 and 2003,” he says. “The Old Course is something special, I have had the honour of walking on the course a few times but never played on it. “We also have the courtesy to play practise rounds before the tournament starts,” said Du Toit with a smile. Belhar, Kuilsrivier en Brackenfell se WP-Superliga-rugbyspanne kan van tevredenheid spreek ná ’n aangename naweek in die jongste reeks wedstryde. Durbanville/Bellville, wat ’n loslootjie gehad het, het darem ook nog gebak in die glorie om die vorige naweek die eerste helfte van die seisoen onoorwonne af te sluit, maar andersins het Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege, Bellville, Hands & Heart en Goodwood vanaf aanstaande maand ’n bult om te klim ten einde hierdie winter ’n redelik aanvaarbare een te maak. Belhar, wat hom maar net vir die tweede jaar in die sterk A-afdeling van die Superliga bevind, gaan duidelik van krag tot krag, geoordeel aan die oorwinning van 24-17 wat die Accordion Park-span oor Villager behaal het. Voor- en agterlangs was Belhar die tuisspan se meerdere en sy sege deur middel van vier drieë (teenoor Villager se enkele drie) getuig van ’n genoeglike uitstappie Kaap se kant toe.
