alkfontein Primary School was an array of green last Friday when the learners of the school took hands with Mpact members and tackled much-needed projects to make the school a picture perfect learning area. All the feverish activity was in support of the Adopt-a-School Foundation, which started in 2002 and aims to address inequalities in rural and disadvantaged schools. “Our plans include long-term involvement at the schools to improve both the quality of education and the school facilities to the benefit of learners,” says Bruce Strong, CEO of Mpact. The sounds of laughter and clatter was heard clearly as the learners helped the Mpact staff with many necessities including the installation of burglar bars, repairs and improvements to the playground, expansion of the vegetable garden and planting of trees.

Key concerns Celia Leibbrandt, member of Mpact said, upon approaching Principal Marius Vercuil of the school they put heads together and identified key concerns which had to be addressed. One being, theft. “There have been many break-ins at the school especially during weekends, because there are no burglar bars on class doors and it’s easy to jump over the walls. Often accessories in classrooms are stolen, which teachers pay from their own pockets,” Marius says. The Mpact members installed 40 burglar bars, erected 97 windows and nine security gates to try and eliminate the theft problem. Another need identified at the school was the expansion of the vegetable garden, which out of 1 100 learners could only feed half. The Mpact team together with Stodels then cleaned the garden area and planted an assortment of vegetables. Vercuil says that he immediately picked up the sincerity Celia had and feels grateful that they gave the school this opportunity. As learners pitched in and shuffled soil, picked up garbage and planted trees they expressed their gratitude. V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 Learner, Damian Baron says: “My friends and I have been helping since this morning. We don’t mind pitching in. We are making our school beautiful,” he says. Other projects included the school field being cleared and trees being planted around the field. The pre-primary playground was tidied up and two sandpits were built for kids as well as the parking lot which was cleaned and beautified with plants. The learners were also spoiled with a boerewors roll and Coke. Celia says that what they have done today is only Phase 1. In the near future they are planning on painting the school, upgrading the school hall as well as the sport field. “All 80 members of our team did this from their heart and for these kids. We aren’t always focused on business and money, through our business we want to make a difference,” she says.

According to MCSA national co-ordinator, Judy Olivier, figures released by the SAPS Missing Persons Bureau, indicate 1 460 children are reported missing each year. “Of the 550 or so cases that MCSA handles annually, about 83 % are found alive and three deceased. The other 14 % are yet to be found,” she says. According to her, stranger abduction, or kidnapping, accounts for nine percent of their cases. “This may not sound a lot, but one mis-
sing child is one too many. Human trafficking is a reality and we are hearing about it more every day,” she says. There will be many activities during the day: games, a fun area for children and lots of prizes to be won, including for the best dressed person in red, black and white. About 200 children from schools in the area will also attend the event. Chairman of the MCSA board actor Nico Panagi will visit the centre at about 12:00 to share his sentiments with the community. “There is no worse crime than one perpetrated against a child,” he told TygerBurger.

A parent’s greatest nightmare. You look up from your shopping trolley, turn around and your child is gone. He was there only seconds ago, tailing along while you pondered the array of toothpaste brands on the shelves in front of you. Within seconds this child, if abducted by a human trafficking syndicate, will have been taken out of the shop. Within minutes he will be in a car leaving town and with every ticking second, chances of ever finding him again diminishes. In South Africa, a child goes missing every six hours and according to official record-keeping that was introduced in 1994, more than 900 of these children reported missing have still not been found. A massive campaign to create awareness around the issue of missing children and to raise funds for Missing Children South Africa (MCSA), will be hosted and sponsored by Pick n Pay Hyper and several of their suppliers in Brackenfell, on 25 May. On this day – which also marks International Day for Missing Children – Missing Children South Africa, in conjunction with numerous community organisations, local businesses and the Kraaifontein and Brackenfell police stations, will aim to cast light on the topic. “We want to educate parents on preventative measures and how to act and what to do in an emergency situation, where a child goes missing in a shopping centre,” says Captain Gerhard Niemand of the Kraaifontein police. To illustrate, the police will simulate a real-time incident of a child going missing in the hypermarket on the day between 10:30 and 12:30. Niemand invites the entire community to join in the fight against human trafficking.

Digital pirates are fleecing SA industry ANDRÉ BAKKES A 27-year-old suspect was arrested last week after Maitland Police found R27 000 worth of pirated DVDs in his possession. Besides the 2 271 DVDs, the authorities also confiscated a laptop, computer, external hard drive and a “copy tower” with eight DVD writers. This equipment had allegedly been used to manufacture the pirated copies of DVDs. Maitland Police spokesperson W/O Siyabulela Vukubi elaborates: “Last week Wednesday at 07:45 we arrested the Cameroonian national in Voortrekker Road after responding to a tip-off from the community.” He continues: “I commend the community member who tipped us off. We can assure the

public that we take this type of crime very seriously! The DVD is someone’s intellectual property, so it comes down to stealing.” The chief executive officer of the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT), Corné Guldenpfennig, confirmed that piracy is a “big problem”. She told TygerBurger that the Western Cape is the third worst province when it comes to this multimillion-rand crime. “Just in the last year piracy cost our economy R200 000 alone. It affects job loss, taxes and revenue,” she explains. “Look, it is not out of hand. At least our country doesn’t have a fast bandwidth or it would be far worse. Our worst problem is still physical piracy, where someone will copy a DVD and not download it.”
She is also not surprised to hear that a national from Cameroon was arrested in this matter, since most of the times those arrested are from other countries. She continues: “There are many foreign syndicates who come to South Africa to make money. This exacerbates the situation, because the money made from selling pirated DVDs or music doesn’t stay in the country.” Guldenpfennig says that SAFACT statistics reveal some pirates make up to R12 000 a day. TAMSYN COERECIUS Die kleuters by Babbelbekkies in Kuilsrivier was vreeslik in hul noppies toe die Kuilsrivier-polisie verlede Vrydag by hulle gekuier het. Vele klein gesiggies het opgewonde gekyk hoe die vrou in haar blou uniform demonstreer hoe hul toerusting werk. As deel van die kleuterskool se weeklikse temas, was veiligheid verlede week die fokuspunt waaroor die polisie met die kleuters gepraat het. Die kleuters het geleer oor die belangrikheid om nie vreemdelinge te vertrou nie, om nie lekkernye by enigiemand te neem nie, om nie deure oop te maak en in vreemde motors te klim nie. “Hulle geniet dit elke week omdat hulle weet spesiale gaste sal vir hulle kom kuier,” sê Corloa Hyman, ’n onderwyser by die kleuterskool. Konst. Maria Kompion van die Kuilsrivier-polisie sê daar is baie voorvalle waarin kleuters wegraak. Sy sê hierdie programme is goed, sodat hulle op ’n jong ouderdom kan weet wat reg en verkeerd is.
Die kleuters het ook meer geleer oor polisie-uniforms en oor die werk wat polisielede doen en was nie teruggetrokke om self die flitse en boeie vas te hou en ’n veiligheidsbaadjie aan te trek nie. “Ouers vertel mos gewoonlik vir kinders dat die polisie hulle sal vang as hulle stout is. Ons wil hulle egter juis help om te verstaan dat as hulle in die moeilikheid is, hulle die polisie kan vertrou,” sê Maria. Die geleentheid was die skool se jaarlikse polisiedag, waar die kinders persoonlik met die manne en vroue in blou kon kuier. Die kinders is aangeraai om die polisie te bel as hulle slagoffers van misdaad is. Loretta Horne, kleuterskoolbestuurder, sê dat hulle jaarliks die polisie nooi om te gesels met kleuters oor veiligheid, omdat hulle so jonk en vatbaar is vir enigiets. “Die kinders is aangeraai om die polisie te bel as hulle slagoffers van misdaad is. Ons wil net daardie vertroue laat ontwikkel tussen kleuter en polisie,” sê sy. TB-joernalis bekroon met gesogte prys Desireé Rorke, ’n senior joernalis van TygerBurger, is Vrydagaand by Media24 se 2013-Legends-toekennings aangewys as plaaslike koerantjoernalis van die jaar. Boonop is Tanya Slabbert, ’n advertensieverteenwoordiger by TygerBurger, aangewys as naaswenner in die kategorie vir verkoopsverteenwoordiger van die jaar: plaaslike koerante. Die Legends-kompetisie, wat die afgelope vyf jaar aangebied word, erken en beloon uitmuntende prestasie in Media24 se koerante-afdeling reg oor Suid-Afrika. Media24 het landwyd sowat 50 plaaslike koerante, bykans tien dagblaaie, en vyf Sondag- Desireé Rorke koerante. Drie breë kategorieë bestaan: redaksionele toekennings, advertensie-toekennings en dienste-toekennings. Oor Desireé se werk het die beoordelaars gesê: “Sy wen die prys vir ’n reeks berigte, almal in die klassieke styl van gemeenskapsjoernalistiek, waarin sy skryf oor kwessies wat die gemeenskap na aan die hart lê.” Fergus Sampson, uit- Tanya Slabbert voerende hoof van Media24-Koerante, het by die geleentheid gesê die toekennings onderstreep die maatskappy se verbintenis tot die skep van die beste koerante in die land. “Media24-Koerante glo in die toekoms

Almal word oud: sorg dus vir bejaardes Die grappie lui: “Wees nou goed vir jou kinders, want eendag gaan hulle jou ouetehuis kies.” As dit maar só was! Hoeveel bejaardes word nie die voorreg ontneem van goeie sorg in hul silwer jare nie? Hopeloos te veel! Baie vergaan in eensaamheid, ellende en armoede. Soms verstoot deur juis dié wat hulle met soveel opofferings en sorg grootgemaak het. Dit is maar een van die nare werlikhede van bejaardesorg in Suid-Afrika. ’n Toename in ouderdom gaan ongelukkig gepaard met ’n afname in flinkheid van brein, fisieke krag en beweeglikheid – iets wat vir elkeen van ons voorlê wat nog nie in daardie ouderdomskategorie val nie. Kom ons sorg vir bejaardes soos ons ook in ons later jare voor gesorg wil word. En juis daarom verdien bejaardes net die beste sorg denkbaar! Soos dié artikel in vandag se uitgawe oor Parow se Seniorsentrum net weer wys: wanneer seniors ’n tuiste gebied word waar daar liefde, deernis en begrip heers, is hulle gelukkig en blymoedig. Broodtrokke lewer af; ons lewer koerante af en groet hardlopers en mense wat met honde wandel; dronkbestuurders maak soms ongelukke; diewe breek in, ry motors weg of haal wiele af en veroorsaak chaos in die straat; diere word omgery en vir dood gelaat. Dromkrappers beproef jou geduld op jou roete; koerantverkopers begin plakkate op die hoeke opsit en sekerheidsmaatskappye doen hul werk in die woonbuurte. Wel, sommige werk en sommige parkeer in uitgesoekte hoekies in die buurt vir ’n vinnige slapie. Vanoggend se “hoekie” was redelik gerieflik – verste hoekie in Heuwelkruin, waar motors of voete nie beweeg nie, net vinnige mense soos ons wat “drop and go”. Is dit hoekom huise en motors so maklik toeganklik is? Omdat uitgeslape diewe die nagskedule van sekerheidspersoneel dophou en weet wanneer om toe te slaan? Stand up and stop the rot that is crime Referring to “Polisie vat nie blaam vir hoë misdaad, TygerBurger, 15 May), I would like to comment on our crime situation in this country. We moved from the southern suburbs to Kuils River about six months ago, I love it here. Our neighbours, well those
close to me, are very nice people, most of them work during the day. I am a housewife and we agreed to exchange phone details. If anything happens I would firstly contact the police, any strange cars or people in our road I would do the same. We had a burglarly not too long ago, the owners do not greet let alone give you a glance, they had the audacity to inquire details. With that kind of attitude one does not want to do anything for such people. What I am trying to say is your neighbour is the closest to you, do not judge people because of the colour of their skin, make an effort to get to know them, we are all South Africans. To curb the crime lets work together, stop complaining and blaming the police for every freaking thing. Today I just heard on the news they are so short staffed. Let’s look at the bigger picture, get out of your comfort zone and stop this rot, stand up for what you paying for. LYDIA SISSING Kuils River
Navrae oor vuishoue by stasie help nie Na aanleiding van die berig “Kankerlyer toegetakel”, TygerBurger, 15 Mei. Ek het die voorval daardie Vrydagoggend gesien en dadelik die polisie gebel. By die werk het ek weer die polisie gebel om te hoor of enigiemand gaan help het. Die vrou het gesê sy sien geen rekord dat ek tussen 06:00 en 08:00 gebel het nie. Sy het toe my selfoonnommer en naam geneem en gesê sy gaan my terugbel. Ek het egter niks van hulle gehoor nie. Ek’t Metrorail gebel en navraag gedoen en niemand kon my enigiets sê nie. Ek was só bekommerd oor die man. Dit maak nie saak wie en wat jy is nie, maar jy slaan niemand nie. Die arme man het nie eers teruggeslaan nie! Mense wat van die trein
geklim het, het hom kom help. Siestog, dis so sleg van die Metro-mense om dit te doen. Werk daardie mense nog daar? Ek’t een man van Metro gesien wat hom geslaan het, en die res het gestaan en kyk en nie gekeer nie. Daar is min kere wat ek op ’n trein was, dat die Metrorail-beamptes met daardie draagbare masjiene by hulle loop. Ek’t so ’n tyd gelede gehoor van ’n seun op die Claremontlyn, wat ook deur hulle geslaan is nadat hy die verkeerde kaartjie gewys het. Hy wou die regte een uithaal, maar hulle het hom nie ’n kans gegee nie en net geslaan. En die polisie het glo gesê hulle kan niks doen nie. Ons as vroue is bang vir hulle, want wat as dit met ons gebeur? Wat gaan Metrorail dan sê? Om jammer te sê, gaan nie help nie. MARI-ANGELIQUE ROBBERTS Epos
Respect parking bay for the intention I feel people need to respect the bays at shopping centres for what they are. Each time I try to park in the moms and tots parking bays with my new baby, I see that reps and other people park in these bays. Even government branded cars. I have spoken to these people and told them that you need to be either be a pensioner or a mom with a kid, to be able to park there. What they don’t understand is that one has a pram, and numerous baby goods that accompany bringing a tot to a mall. You also want to avoid them being in wind or rain, especially newborns. What really irks me is when people other than moms and pensioners, park here, like lazy housewives with teens, reps who just “pop in”, etc, and you see folk park there and there is no kid in the car. Werkloosheid met dié kursus gestuit Volgens Statistiek SA se arbeidsmagpeiling is amper 7 miljoen mense in Suid-Afrika werkloos. Van die land se werkloses is meer as 70 % tussen die ouderdomme van 15 en 34 jaar. Solidariteit Helpende Hand reken egter om entrepreneuries te dink, kan jongmense help om nie deel van die werkloosheidstatistiek te word nie. Helpende Hand stel daarom ’n entrepreneurskompetisie vir jongmense bekend waarmee ’n entrepreneursingesteldheid ontwikkel en vaardighede vir die sakewêreld verskerp kan word. Volunteer for Sanccob The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) is hosting a “local volunteer information open day” on 25 May at the Sanccob centre in Table View. Sanccob invites local volunteers from the greater Cape Town area to attend one of the two information sessions (10:00 and 11:00) to find out more about the various volunteering opportunities available. Sanccob is a world-renowned marine conservation centre and has treated more than 95 000 oiled, ill, injured and abandoned African penguins and other threatened seabirds since being established in 1968. As a non-government organisation, volunteering is at the heart of Sanccob’s operations. While they often require volunteers during an oil spill crisis, they also need individuals year-round who can assist with general tasks. Hoenderdis vir 60 mense Moes jy al vir ’n groot groep mense kosmaak, dalk selfs help met die kosvoorbereidings vir ’n troue of ander groot funksie? Ek het geleer dat die senutergendste deel is nié om só te beplan dat almal genoeg kos kry nie, maar om voorbereid te wees op die onverwagte. Spyseniering is slegs vir diegene wat sterk van gees, gemoed en spiere is en boonop senuwees van staal het. Ek is al geruime tyd betrokke by spyseniering en alhoewel mens baie ondervinding opdoen oor die jare, is geen funksie ooit dieselfde nie. Jy leer steeds met elke funksie en dié leerskool bied elke keer iets anders. Asbesverwarmers word met foelie oorgetrek, plat neergesit en vinnig-vinnig het jy ’n klomp verwarmingsplate om kos op warm te hou. En moenie die wondergom vergeet nie, ek het al menigte bruid se lewe gered met wondergom. Ek het onlangs die spyseniering by ’n troue gedoen waar die bye in vervoering was met die blommerangskikkings en die arme bruid en haar handruiker behoorlik toegetakel het. Die bruid was allergies vir bye, maar gelukkig het ek haar te hulp gesnel met ’n antihistamien-pilletjie uit my einste towertassie! Ek deel vandag ’n staatmaker-resep in grootmaat vir ’n verandering, aangesien ek gereeld hiervoor gevra word. Hoendergereg Genoeg vir 60 persone, gebruik 5 oondpanne Jy het nodig: V 10 kg gaar hoender, wat met speserye en knoffel gegeur is V 10 blikkies hoenderroomsop V 20 koppies gaar rys V 5 koppies mayonnaise V 5 pakke (150 g elk) gerookte bief of groenuie skyfies Só maak mens: Laat hoender afkoel en sny in klein stukkies. Maak die skyfies fyn, jy kan dit fyn druk binne-in die pak. Meng al die bestanddele liggies saam, maar hou die helfte van die fyngemaakte skyfies eenkant. Skep in gesmeerde oondpan en strooi orige skyfies oor. Bedek met foelie en bak vir ongeveer 40 minute by 180ºC. Hierdie gereg kan voorberei en gevries word voordat dit gebak word. Oud, maar beslis nog nie koud… ROWENA HENDRICKS Bejaardes is ook maar net mense met behoeftes, begeertes en wense, wat ondersteuning, liefde, geduld benodig en wat in die gemeenskap betrokke wil wees. Die werklikheid is egter dat hulle so maklik vergeet en afgeskeep word. Daar word so dikwels geglo dat, wanneer jy oud word, dit die einde van jou lewe beteken. By Parow se Seniorsentrum (PSS) word daar egter geglo dat bejaardes duursame juwele en skatte van die samelewing is.

Hier is bejaardheid nie die einde nie, maar die begin van die mooiste deel van ’n mens se lewe. PSS, ’n liefdadigheidorganisasie in die hartjie van Parow, bied daagliks ’n ondersteuningsdiens aan sowat 190 bejaardes om hulle solank moontlik onafhanklik te laat leef. PSS is vanjaar een van die drie begunstigdes van TygerBurger se Want ons Kan!/Cause we Can!-konsert, wat op Sondag 28 Julie in die Bellville-burgersentrum gehou word. Al die kaartjie-inkomste gaan direk na die begunstigdes, wat self die kaartjies verkoop. Die hoofdoel van PSS is om bejaardes in die gemeenskap te ondersteun en voor te berei op veroudering met die nodige hulpbronne. Die sentrum huisves onder meer 55 bejaardes in die Hernus Kriel-behuisingskompleks in Parow, en bied ’n ondersteuningsdiens aan bejaardes in die gemeenskap wat steeds in hul eie wonings bly. Die sentrum verskaf ook sowat 190 middagetes daagliks aan die inwoners en dienslede. Tannie Issie Bergh (91), een van die oudste inwoners van die sentrum, sê sy is baie gelukkig by PSS. Sy woon al 19 jaar lank in die Hernus Kriel-kompleks. “Hier word baie projekte en aktiwiteite vir ons aangebied. Ons brei en doen elke dag naaldwerk. Ons skenk nog gereeld gebreide komberse en ander items aan ander behoeftiges,” sê sy. Sophia Martin, een van die nuutste inwoners van die Hernus Kriel-kompleks, sê sy bly baie lekker en gerieflik hier en voel baie veilig. “Ek het hier kom bly, want ek is nog

Ek het baie vriendinne en hulle bied só baie vir ons hier aan, soos uitstappies, vermaak- en oefenprogramme, asook gereelde sosiale geleenthede. Dit als hou ons jonk en gesond,” sê Martin. Volgens Annaleen Nel, bestuurder, is Parow se Seniorsentrum in 1984 gestig. In 1994 het die sentrum die huidige gebou betree, wat voorheen ’n laerskool gehuisves het. Die sentrum verskaf onder meer dienste aan bejaardes in Parow, Bellville, Ravensmead en Goodwood. Die sentrum word bestuur deur ’n beheerraad van tien vrywilligers uit die gemeenskap. PSS is ’n program van Badisa en sal in 2014 sy 30ste bestaansjaar vier. Nel sê die grootste uitdagings is om ’n volhoubare en bekostigbare diens aan die gemiddelde inkomstegroep van seniors in die gemeenskap te lewer. “Die meeste van ons dienslede en inwoners is selfversorgende pensioenarisse. Die sentrum is daarom feitlik heeltemal afhank-
lik van geldinsamelingprojekte, borgskappe en vrywilligers vir die daaglikse werking van die sentrum. Sy sê die sentrum se basiese maandelikse uitgawes beloop derduisende rande. “As ons nie ons hande elke oggend en saans in die hand van die Here sit nie, sal ons nie oorleef nie. Dis dan ’n verlore stryd. “Ons kan dit beslis nie alleen doen nie. Ons het ook die ondersteuning, hulp en betrokkenheid van die gemeenskap, organisasies en maatskappye nodig om te oorleef en belangrike dienste te kan lewer,” sê Nel. Sy sê die beste deel van haar werk en betrokkenheid by bejaardes is dat hulle altyd eg is, want “wat jy sien, is wat jy kry”. “Dis ’n lekker gevoel om te weet jy maak ’n verskil in die laaste jare van mense se lewe. Ons is soos een groot gesin hier en saam trek ons die wa deur die drif,” sê Nel. SAPS Edu Trust cycle success After a seven-day long journey on their bicycles, the cyclists who took the streets in aid of the Brackenfell SAPS Education Trust arrived at the Brackenfell sport grounds last Tuesday. They were worn out, but overjoyed at their achievement of cycling 605 km in aid of a good cause. The cyclists gathered and were treated to snacks as police officials expressed their gratitude. Zelda Smits, who participated, says the journey was very tough, but was mo-
tivated to continue by all policemen who passed away in the line of duty. Members of the Brackenfell police will be hosting a fundraiser, “Oor die kole met Kobus” with Kobus Wiese on Wednesday 22 May at the Palms in Bottelary Road in Brackenfell. Bryan uses sleight of mind
LOUISA STEYL “It’s that little kick in the head I like.” Illusionist Bryan Miles says he simply takes what people don’t understand and presents it theatrically on stage. “What I do isn’t all magic, but I fall into that bracket,” Bryan says, explaining that he merely predicts and influences his audience’s behaviour. “There’s nothing supernatural about what I do,” he says. “I’m a people watcher.” Bryan Miles Bryan draws on elements of psychology, suggestion and hypnosis in his performances, but he makes no secret that what he does is a skill, not a special power. “Extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence,” Bryan says, pointing out: “I’m always honest about my dishonesty.” His love of illusion developed from a love of theatre and a desire to know how things work. “I’ve always been one of those kids that took things apart,” Bryan says, adding: “The minute you understand how they work, you can manipulate things.” As a schoolboy, Bryan was already playing mind tricks with his peers.
After high school, he travelled to America where he worked at a Theatre Arts Camp while he learned everything he could from American performers. “I met some strange people,” Bryan recalls. He says he spent his time there “just absorbing everything I could get.” While in the States, Bryan also visited the legendary Magic Castle in Hollywood. “That was a big thing for me,” he says proudly. He points out that there are very few South Africans who are illusionists. “It’s a very specialised art,” Bryan says, adding: “That gives you the idea of the refinement that this needs.” Bryan points out that what he does isn’t definitive. Bellville proe ’n eerste A-sege SAREL BURGER In ’n ietwat teleurstellende naweek vir die Tygerbergse rugbyspanne in die WP se Superliga was Durbanville-Bellville, Bellville en Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege die enigste wat met blymoedige harte Saterdagaand huiswaarts gekeer het. Bellville (voorheen Bellville Tech), wat met sy debuut vanjaar in die A-afdeling sover gesukkel het om behoorlik op dreef te
kom, het wel in sy jongste wedstryd vir die eerste keer ’n oorwinning geproe toe hy Helderberg met 36-32 getroef het. Dit was ’n goeie wipplankstryd, waarin Bellville se beter agterlynspel die knoop deurgehak het. Durbanville-Bellville het hom teen ’n besonder vasberade Belhar vasgeloop, maar toe die Durbies in die tweede helfte beheer verkry het, het hul uiteindelike sewe drieë ’n sege van 47-26 bewerkstellig. Tygerberg-klub het eweneens in sy wed-
stryd teen die Maties die studentespan aanvanklik goed lamgelê. Dit was totdat die besoekers se groter slaankrag in die agterlyn meegebring het dat die Floridapark-span met 34-17 die kous oor die kop gekry het. In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland se span onverwags kwaai teenstand van Hamlets gekry en moes hy genoeë neem met ’n gelykopuitslag van 17-17. Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege het darem

weer op die wenspoor gekom deur sy buurman, Goodwood, met 48-10 af te ransel. Brackenfell (25-32 t Villager) en Kuilsrivier (22-46 t Primrose) kon nie die mas opkom in hul wedstryde nie. As gevolg van die Stormers-wedstryd eerskomende Saterdag op Nuweland is net enkele spanne in die Tygerbergstreek in aksie – en wel reeds Vrydagaand (tuisspan eerste): Helderberg t Belhar, Schotsche Kloof/Walmer t Bellville, NNK t Hands & Heart, UWK t Valsbaai.
Tiere sorg vir ’n klein opskudding SAREL BURGER Die Hoërskool Tygerberg se eerste rugbyspan het die afgelope naweek gesorg vir ’n klein opskudding deur die Seunskool Wynberg op eie werf met 39-36 te klop. Dié verrassende oorwinning was inderdaad veel meer oortuigend as wat die telling aandui. Die Tiere het hul teenstanders veral voorlangs behoorlik laat les opsê. Stellenberg het in ’n ewe aanskoulike wedstryd, danksy beter afronding, betreklik maklik met 38-19 met Mosselbaai se HS Punt afgereken, terwyl Durbanville onverwags met 22-34 teen die wisselvallige HS Bellville die knie gebuig het. Die Durbies is uitermate kwaai deur die skeidsregter gestraf. Op Kuilsrivier het Brackenfell in sy uiters taai gelykopstryd net genoeg gedoen om De Kuilen met 18-17 te klop, terwyl D.F. Malan sy jarelange oorheersing van HTS Bellville voortgesit het met ’n oorwinning van 24-17. Monumentpark is met 50-0 bloedneus gespeel deur HS Strand, maar President het op sy beurt die Hamiltons-klub verniel met ’n telling van 52-6.

fter dominating the national track cycling championships last month and establishing herself as the number one women’s track cyclist in the country, the time has come for much stiffer competition. Maroesjka Matthee (24) leaves for Pennsylvania from 9 July to 31 August. Pennsylvania is famous for what is called T-town, the world’s best cycling track. The Lehigh County Velodrome situated in Trexlertown annually attracts some of the best cyclists from around the world. “I’ve had a successful career so far. Last month during the national championships at the Bellville Velodrome I won eight gold medals in 1 500 m, scratch women, sprint, keirin, 500 TT, points race and team sprint and pursuit. I took bronze in the individual pursuit.
Olympics “I also won gold in all my events during the provincial championships. I’m now at a point where I want to see how I compare to international opposition. My main goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. And in order for that to happen, I need to start competing on international level and collect points for national selection. Maroesjka currently trains six days a week on the road, averaging 50 km daily in the week. On weekends she tries to do 200 km. “To stay competitive and be on the top of your game you have to put in the hard yards. That is why Pennsylvania could be a massive stepping stone in my career. If I can get a win or two or podium finish I can qualify for the World Cup Track Cycling championships which is decided over three legs.”

The first of these takes place from 1 to 3 November in Manchester, the second leg from 5 to 7 December in Mexico and the grand finale from 17 to 19 January (to be con-

Athletes’ seminar for Battle of Titans There will be an athletes’ seminar on Saturday for the Battle of the Titans IFBB Western Province bodybuilding competition. The seminar will be held at the Bella Rosa Life Style Centre in Bellville from 11:00 to 13:00. Learn how to impress the judges on stage. Several aspects will be covered from the correct tanning methods to what the judges will be looking for on stage.

Tydens die onlangse Wildeklawer-toernooi in Durban het Stellenberg met verskeie van die land se voorste spanne afgereken. Om dié ranglysprestasie te vier, het die
Stellies die afgelope week twee baie oortuigende oorwinnings op hul kerfstok geplaas. Nadat hulle Durbanville met 46-13 gekou het, moes ook die HS Punt (Mosselbaai) Saterdag behoorlik deurloop toe Stellenberg die besoekers met 46-11 verniel het.
