it was soos ’n greep uit een van Hollywood se beste aksiefilms – ’n kaping, jaagtogte, heen-en-weer-skietery, botsings en R400 000 se buit – alles gisteroggend in Durbanville se strate.

Drie vermeende rowers is uiteindelik vasgetrek ná ’n skietery waarin sowat tien skote tussen die vermeende rowers en Fidelitywagte geskiet is, terwyl hulle in Durbanweg afgejaag het.

Woorde neem jou op magiese reis ESMÉ ERASMUS Die eensame geroep van ’n dikkop in die nag, die skel geraas van ’n hadida en ’n reis na ’n wonderwêreld van die melkweg, paddaprinse en ander stories is waarmee Durbanville se eie voordragkunstenaar jonk en oud bekoor met haar nuwe CD, Kom vlieg...

Hoewel sy altyd besig was met skryfwerk of die Afrikaanse taal en eers as afgetrede dosent begin het om haar woordkuns te toonset of laat toonset, het Helena Conradie nou reeds haar negende CD op haar kerfstok.

Die CD, Kom vlieg..., is haar derde kinder-CD. Sy het haar eerste kinder-CD, My ouma het ’n Skeffie Beffel, in 2005 gemaak uit verlange na haar kleinkinders in die buiteland. Kersfees hier by ons met besonderse Kersliedere is ’n paar jaar gelede vrygestel.

Helena verkneukel haar in die leefkamer van haar huis in Durbanville Hills oor die voëlgeluide en klanke wat haar woordkuns so perfek aanvul. Die geluid van die Piet-my-vrou se geroep en die hadida en dikkop sluit aan by die tema van vlieg, verduidelik sy. Elke stukkie musiek is spesiaal deur Francois le Roux geskryf vir die lirieke. Die gebruik van ’n tjello, klavier en ander instrumente vleg die stories saam in ’n wonder-verbeeldingswêreld.

Sy het meeste van die lirieke vir die verskillende liedjies geskryf, terwyl ’n paar gedigte van Philip de Vos, J.M. Gilfillan en ’n teks van Hennie Aucamp ook op Kom vlieg... verskyn. Karli Heine, met haar klokhelder stem, sing meeste liedjies, terwyl al die ander storie-gediggies deur Helena op haar kreatiewe manier voorgedra word. Karli het so pas ’n kykNET-Fiestatoekenning ontvang vir beste vroulike byspeler vir haar rol in die drama Op dees

Aarde.

Die gediggies en stories en gepaardgaande toonsettings is so vars, dat dit deur die bekende letterkundige, dr. Rensia Robinson, as “’n magiese reis vir kinders van 5 tot 80” beskryf word.

Helena is egter veral bekend vir haar besondere CD’s in samewerking met musici, waarmee sy ’n luisterervaring skep met die vertolking van die woorde van bekende digters. Haar eerste woord-CD in Afrikaans was Makie Mooigoed Staan met werke van Boerneef in 2000, waarvan sy meer as 2 000 eksemplare verkoop het. Ander wat gevolg het, was Ek Word Tintelend Wakker,met gedigte van Sheila Cussons, Die Vensters Gaan Oop met gedigte van T.T. Cloete.

In 2008 het sy, in samewerking met ander, George Weideman met Doepa! gehuldig. Dan is daar ook haar eenvrouvertoning MONAloog, onder regie van Marius du Plooy en met die musiek van Valiant Swart, wat van 2004 tot 2006 op talle verhoë opgevoer is. Speelman is haar mees onlangse volwasse CD en bestaan uit gedigte van verskeie digters. Dit is in 2009 vrygestel.

Helena het ’n graad in drama aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch behaal, maar toe vir ’n onderwysdiploma gaan studeer.

Haar betrokkenheid by drama het egter altyd deur haar lewe gevleg. Selfs as onderwysstudent is sy deur die dramadepartement gevra om in die stuk Yerma van Lorca, wat deur Uys Krige uit Spaans vertaal is, op te tree.

Sy het sulke uitstekende resensies gekry dat Kruik haar probeer werf het, maar sy het ’n onderwysbeurs gehad en moes eers gaan skoolhou. Sy het toe haar kreatiwiteit gestort in skooldramas. Sy het daarna getrou en haar gesinslewe het vir eers eerste gekom. Sy het later ’n honneursgraad

The key to weight control ANDRÉ BAKKES What 16-year-old Kristin Hill from Table View lost in weight, she has gained in confidence.

When she weighed 98,4 kg, she was treated remarkably different from one year later when she reached her goal of losing 30 kg.

This says as much about society’s obsession with weight as it does about the difference confidence can make in the world’s consequential perception of others.

One year on the Weigh-Less programme, culminated in relative stardom after Kristen has apparently become the youngest to lose such a substantial amount of weight in the world in a year.

She has recently been interviewed by SABC 2 live TV show Hectic Nine to get her to share what so many want to know.

TygerBurger jumped on the bandwagon and now possesses this secret as well.

It is… No, wait… all good things come to those who wait.

Before the big revelation, let Kristin set the scene: “I was always very heavy as a child and I used to adore biscuits and cakes.

I was constantly eating and I was getting chubbier all the time.

“Being overweight had a major impact on my life.”

She adds that it used to be very difficult to make friends. Suffice to say, horrible names such as “elephant” trampled her selfesteem.

After unsuccessfully trying to lose weight she gave Weigh-Less a belated chance.

One year later...

She supposedly made history.

Overcoming moments of extreme temptation was, in effect, like a metaphorical desert that energised her will to go on.

“Oh! My biggest temptation was when I went out for pizza with my friends! It was an all-you-can-eat-pizza special man! It was horrible. I sat there thinking to myself, ‘No. Let’s think this through. I could eat this whole big pizza and keep it coming or I can rather feel better tomorrow knowing that I actually said no to something’. And in time it actually becomes easier to say no,” she

Now the Blouberg International School’s pupil is bubbling with self confidence and her epic battle has become one of legend.

Three managers who have a drive for success, stay true to their roots and give back to the community. Dhakir Christians, Lennox Kilana and Patience Bvudzijena, managers at Debonairs in Zevenwacht Mall started a project in aid of the underprivileged.

Their new project, “Dough for good” started recently and offers something to eat to different charities and organisations.

“When it comes to running a business people tend to think it’s only about making money. We are here to give back,” said Dhakir.

These managers take their work savvy and caring hearts to show that in the business world money isn’t everything.

They recently took hands with a charity organisation, The Ark. The Ark provides temporary shelter, food and clothing for underprivileged women and men who are addicted to drugs, and abandoned children.

Precious says that it is extremely difficult for her to see the daily struggles these women and children have to face.

Their cause, “Dough for good” provides 100 bread buns to The Ark every Wednesday and Sunday. “Seeing the look on their faces just to receive something we often take for granted is amazing,” said Lennox.

“We didn’t want to just throw the extra dough away, so we decided to start this and give it to people who really need it,” said Dhakir.

Gaynor Fortune who works at The Ark calls this project a real blessing. “We really appreciate what they do for us and receive it with open arms,” she says.

Dhakir who has been involved in the community for years thrives on making others smile. The three managers plan on starting more projects to help the underprivileged. “We believe that success comes from giving back,” Dhakir says.

‘Bom’ in straat laat inwoners skarrel DESIREÉ RORKE Pandemonium het Vrydagoggend in Edenpark losgebars toe ’n “bom” in Sederstraat gewaar is.

Mense het behoorlik rondgeskarrel toe hulle bewus geword het van ’n verdagte swart boks – stewig toegemaak en met ’n dik staalketting vasgemaak aan ’n lamppaal op die hoek van Sederstraat.

Maar die netjiese mediumgrootte industriële plastiekboks was toe darem nie die houer van ’n bom nie, maar het tot die verligting van die inwoners net ’n pak tydskrifte bevat.

“Dit was baie vreemd en ons het nog nooit só iets in enige van ons strate gewaar nie, en ek was regtig skrikkerig oor die eienaardige gedoente,” sê een inwoner wat anoniem wil bly. Sy het egter dadelik die Brackenfell-polisie in kennis gestel en minder as ’n halfuur later, omstreeks 11:30, was die polisie en die honde-eenheid op die toneel.

Die gebied is dadelik afgesper en baie gou het ’n doodgewone rustige oggend in Edenpark bedrywig geraak.

“Die honde het glad nie reageer op die boks nie, waarna ons die bomeenheid ingeroep het,” sê ao. Erica Crous, polisiewoordvoerder.

Toegerus met die nodige beskerming het lede van die bomeenheid eers probeer om die boks oop te maak, maar kon nie daarin slaag nie.

Die boks is toe oopgeskiet met ligte plofstof. Nadat die rook gaan lê het en lede van

die bomeenheid van nader kon ondersoek instel, is ’n pak tydskrifte al wat hulle kon vind. Die sug van verligting onder inwoners wat in groepies rondgestaan het, was amper hoorbaar.

Die advertensietydskrifte wat in die boks gevind is, word al meer as twee jaar in Brackenfell versprei. “Die verspreider maak die tydskrifte in bokse aan pale vas, omdat dit te swaar is om saam te dra tydens aflewering,” verduidelik Ronel du Toit, uitgewer van die tydskrif.

Volgens haar het die verspreiders reeds verlede jaar met dié metode van aflewering begin, maar nog nooit enige openbare klagtes ontvang nie. “Die swart bokse het gewoonlik plakkers gehad met die maatskappy se naam en nommer, maar as gevolg van die onlangse reën het dié plakker afgekom,” verduidelik sy.

Volgens Crous is die eienaar van die verspreidingsmaatskappy, Lance Lighton, deur die polisie gekontak om vas te stel of hy die nodige munisipale toestemming het vir die metode van verspreiding. Sy het bygevoeg dat die maatskappy hulle volle samewerking gegee het.

“Hulle sal dadelik aansoek doen by die munisipaliteit en die bokse sal in die toekoms duidelik gemerk word,” sê Crous.

Lighton het gesê dat hulle tans ander maniere van verspreiding ondersoek. “Ons moes die bokse aan pale vasmaak omdat bergies dit al voorheen gesteel het. Ons beplan om in die toekoms die bokse op privaat eiendom te los, terwyl ons aflewer,” sê hy.

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk van die Kuilsrivier-polisie sê huisinbrake in Kuilsrivier het geweldig gestyg, omdat die gemeenskap dit so maklik maak vir skelms.

“Daar is baie maatreëls wat ons vir mense gee om te volg, maar steeds maak hulle dit so maklik vir enigiemand om toegang tot hul woning te kry,” sê hy.

Lede van die Kuilrivier-polisie het gaan kyk in die gebiede en die probleemareas geidentifiseer.

Hulle het gevind dat sektor 1, wat Highbury en Highbury Park insluit, die grootste hoeveelheid huisinbrake toon.

Van Niekerk sê dat diefstal van motorvoertuie by die Kuilsrivier-spoorwegstasie

en die Shoprite Mall ook toegeneem het.

“Hulle teiken is gewoonlik ou motors soos Mazda’s en Toyota’s, wat maklik bekombaar is.”

Hy moedig die gemeenskap aan om hul voertuie met Gorilla-slotte te sluit.

Die polisielede se nuwe inisiatiewe sluit in die uitdeel van pamflette, asook gesprekke oor veiligheid. Die gemeenskap word aangemoedig om nie vensters oop te nojhou nie, om altyd veiligheidshekke te sluit en diefwering by skuifdeure aan te bring.

“Wees ook op die uitkyk vir verdagte mense in jou omgewing, want ons weet dat die skelms die gebiede dophou,” sê Van Niekerk.

Sers. Jakobus van der Walt doen ’n beroep op die gemeenskap om by buurtwagte aan te sluit om die gemeenskap veilig te hou.

Daniël se herstel wonderwerk DESIREÉ RORKE Ná 169 dae in die hospitaal is klein Daniël le Roux (3) van Uitzicht uiteindelik huis toe – sterker en gesonder as ’n jaar tevore.

Dit is ’n wonderwerk vir sy ouers en gemeenskap wat hom onderskraag het en ’n mediese deurbraak, wat dalk nog honderde ander lewens kan red.

Daniël is verlede jaar in Mei gediagnoseer met Leigh-sindroom, ’n uiters rare, maar dodelike siekte wat die motoriese neurons in die breinstam stelselmatig vernietig.

Iemand met dié sindroom kan later nie meer beweeg, asemhaal of sluk nie, en die toestand lei binne enkele jare tot die dood.

In Oktober verlede jaar het Daniël in ’n koma verval en dokters by die Rooi Kruis-kinderhospitaal het sy ouers voorberei vir die ergste. Hy kon glad nie meer op sy eie asemhaal nie en ’n ventilator het hom aan die lewe gehou.

“Hulle kon niks meer vir hom doen nie en vir ons is gesê om eerder die masjiene af te skakel,” vertel sy ma, Lianie.

Sy kon haar kind se lot egter nie aanvaar nie. “Terwyl daar nog tekens van lewe in sy brein was, kon ek hom nie laat gaan nie,”

vertel sy ma. Daniël is oorgeplaas na die Mediclinic Cape Gate, waar die pediater, prof.

Pieter Fourie, hom volledig ondersoek het.

In die kritieke stadium het Fourie te hore gekom van die nuwe middel EPI 743, wat in Amerika ontwikkel is vir behandeling van Leigh-sindroomlyers en hy het dadelik in kontak gekom met die Amerikaanse farmaseutiese maatskappy, wat die middel ontwikkel het.

Daarna moes Fourie aansoek doen vir Daniël om deel te neem aan die proefbehandeling. Die Amerikaanse farmaseutiese owerheid (FDA) het Daniël se behandeling onder baie streng voorwaardes goedgekeur en in Oktober verlede jaar het die medikasie in Suid Afrika geland.

“Dit was op sigself ’n wonderwerk, omdat nie sommer enige pasiënt aanvaar word vir die proefbehandeling nie en Daniël reeds so siek was met geen hoop op oorlewing nie,” sê Lianie.

Nou ná meer as vyf maande op die medikasie, het Daniël se toestand só verbeter dat hy huis toe kon gaan en selfs vier ure per dag sonder die ventilator kon klaarkom.

Op ’n onlangse besoek aan sy huis het TygerBurger van nader kennis gemaak met dié

klein woelwater. Afgesien van die feit dat sy lyfie nog baie bewe en hy nog nie heeltemal op sy eie kan loop nie, is Daniël so aktief soos enige ander seuntjie van sy ouderdom.

“Hy is baie lief daarvoor om buite te speel en veral om vuil te word. Hy is mal oor musiek en sing graag saam en klap hande op sy gunstelingliedjie, Oom Karolus,” vertel Liana, terwyl Daniël vir my snaakse gesiggies trek om my te laat lag.

Hy is ’n merkwaardige klein seuntjie wat ’n dapper stryd veg. Daniël sal nog tot in Junie die medikasie in die proeftydperk ontvang, waarna daar weer aansoek gedoen sal moet word vir die medikasie.

“Hy sal die middel vir die res van sy lewe moet kry en sodra die produk deur die FDA goedgekeur is en in Suid-Afrika geregistreer is, sal hy vir die medikasie moet betaal teen markverwante pryse,” sê Fourie.

Volgens Fourie is die proses vir registrasie uiters kompleks, maar is die FDA baie opgewonde oor Daniël. “Hulle beskou hom as een van hul sterpasiënte. Die medikasie was uiters suksesvol. Hy lewe, hy is gesond en verbeter elke dag.”

Affordable homes community winner GARY VAN DYK Affordable housing in middle income groups is making positive changes in communities.

The findings of an independent study have just been released to show how new affordable housing developments in SA (and especially in the Cape) are changing the social fabric of the country.

The research, commissioned by International Housing Solutions (IHS) – a private equity funder of affordable housing in SA which has already invested in more than R8,4 billion worth of developments throughout SA – was conducted by Francois Viruly, property economist and UCT professor.

Speaking at one of the company’s projects

in Belhar last week he pointed out that this was the second year in a row that the study had been undertaken.

“It shows interesting year on year trends on the impact of affordable housing on communities and includes factors such as job creation, employment and access to transport.

“In-depth interviews were conducted in households in more than 20 developments that was done by the company and conclusions suggest that tenants and owners continue to experience significant benefits from this type of housing compared to available alternatives in the housing market.

“The affordable housing sector is still a relatively unknown entity among South Africans, with focus having fallen almost ex-

Sanral sets record straight on tolling The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has dismissed as grossly misleading allegations that it will implement the same Open Road Tolling system in Cape Town as it has in Gauteng.

Sanral’s head of communications Vusi Mona said: “Firstly, whereas in Gauteng we went out to borrow money to build the road, with Cape Town we will be appointing a concessionaire on a build, operate and transfer basis. This means the concessionaire will finance and maintain the road, returning it to the state in a specified condition after the concession period.

Electronic system “Secondly, there will be toll plazas along the N1 and N2, unlike in Gauteng, with an option for motorists to either pay manually or use a lane that will require them to slow down as they approach a toll booth, enable an e-tag fitted in their car to be recognised by the technical equipment at the toll plaza, deduct the required tariff from a motorist’s e-toll account, lift the boom and allow the motorist to pass through without having to stop. The payment takes place electronically. That is what e-tolling means – a method of paying your toll fees electronically.”

The system has been operating at the Bakwena Toll Plaza for the past 12 years, Mona indicated, providing a convenience to those who value their time and do not want to stop at a toll gate. The Gauteng e-tag system has been operating at Bakwena since the beginning of September last year, offering interoperability that is the first in the world.

“This means toll customers can pay for travel and related services across provinces with a single account. We are moving towards a one account system serviced by a

transaction settlement system open to multiple toll operators. All our concessionaires are co-operating with us in this regard. If you are a Cape Town motorist driving in Gauteng or on any toll road, you will be able to use one account if you have opted in to use the e-tag system,” said Mona.

The brouhaha created around e-tolling was unfortunate, he said.

“At times it is unclear whether one is dealing with opposition to tolling as a principle or opposition to the method of collection.

Tolling was first introduced in South Africa in 1984 and e-tolling is not a new phenomenon in the country. So, what people may be against is the tolling of urban roads.”

The recent release of the Tom Tom Congestion Index shows Johannesburg and Cape Town as the first and second most congested cities in South Africa. Mona said it was necessary to toll urban roads both as part of travel demand management and as a source of revenue for the financing of road infrastructure.

Budgets “Sanral’s allocation from the fiscus is about R10 billion per annum and the N1/N2 Winelands Project requires just about that amount. We obviously can’t allocate our entire budget to national roads that pass through one city. The fiscus is under pressure and we have to find alternative ways of financing road infrastructure. Tolling is one option. The fuel levy is inflationary and not sustainable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sanral has confirmed that e-tolling in Gauteng is set to commence within two months. This came out of discussions Sanral recently had with government.

City details 5­year development plan DESIREÉ RORKE Urbanisation is underscored in the City of Cape Town Integrated Development Plan (IDP), for the next five years.

In plain terms, the IDP is a plan for how the city will spend its money for the next five years, on what, and where. It is a plan to help them set their budget priorities.

Because it is an agreement between local government and residents of the entire city, a fine balance needs to be struck in allocating scarce resources.

Interspersed throughout the new five-year blueprint is the focus to create a more inclusive society.

Starting with opportunity, the city aims to attract much more investment as a means for economic growth and development. An Economic Development Forum was launched and several catalyst projects such as the rollout of a fibre optic network in the CDB, along with it.

Going green Also in this regard the city administration will in years to come look at green technology in commerce and industry as well as investigate ways to privatise underutilised state owned assets. The key markets in all of this will remain tourism, agriculture, major events and shipping.

Insofar as housing development is concerned the IDP will focus on integrated human settlements informed by a densification policy to prevent the formation of isolated communities. The core principle here is to build communities close to opportunities and social infrastructure.

Moreover, services will be extended to backyard dwellers on City-owned land and

services to informal settlements will continually be monitored.

In the next five years the City aims to improve public transport and a survey is already under way throughout the city to determine the need.

Restoration Plans to restore historical sites and buildings is under way and community facilities in areas with backlogs will be prioritised.

Executive mayor Patricia de Lille says that the result of urbanisation as experienced in recent years, has placed a big demand on the city to provide more services.

“This demand will grow as the city grows…But we must as a city position ourselves to embrace these realities…to maximise growth while providing services,” she says.

“The world is changing. As the global economy shifts, the developing world is generating financial forces with greater strength and frequency than ever before. This has brought numerous changes and challenges, and greatly accelerated the processes of urbanisation. Now, more people than ever live in cities in search of a better life... As a city we must do all we can to make sure we are part of this economic shift taking place. Only innovative policies can help us manage urban environments,” she says.

According to De Lille development over the next 20 years will be driven by a multitude of mid-sized cities such as Cape Town.

“Our regional position renders us well placed as a gateway to African markets. Our unique strengths, including our smaller size, better infrastructure...and sophisticated higher-education network, make us ideally suited (to be competitive),” she says.

Northlink College open day for career seekers The Northlink College Parow Campus will be hosting its annual open day on 19 and 20 April at the campus grounds from 09:00 to 14:00.

This will take place simultaneously with the other six Northlink campuses that are all situated in the northern suburbs of Cape Town namely: Belhar, Bellville, Goodwood, Protea, Tygerberg and Wingfield in Goodwood.

Schools and communities are invited to attend these fun-filled days.

The open days give the college an opportunity to show prospective students, who have completed their Grades 9 or 12, what career paths are available to them.

Some of the activities that will take place at Parow campus include: A flag hoisting ceremony by the safety in society students; an exhibition and live demonstrations by the hair care department; some can relax with a massage at the massagathon; nail art will be for sale by the cosmetology students; and primary healthcare will look after the health of the community and do HIV testing, high blood pressure and TB testing.

There will also be sporting activities like

netball and soccer available to all.

The other six campuses are split into engineering, business and general studies.

Rene Bonzet, head of the department of communication, marketing and advancement at Northlink College, says the annual open day is a highlight on the college’s calendar. “The open day give prospective students a glimpse into not only the college, but the world of work,” says Bonzet.

The lecturers and support staff will be available to assist with career advice that will help prospective students to pursue their field of study.

Students can also find out about available bursaries and accommodation.

One lucky person will stand a chance to win an iPad mini.

Entry forms will be given to each person who attends the open day.

A shuttle service will only operate on the Saturday between the campuses.

Patients get hefty donation The pharmaceutical retailer Dis-Chem Cape Town recently made a generous donation of R40 000 worth of hygiene products to the Tygerberg Hospital.

The company made this once-off donation that included soaps, face cloths, deodorants, toothbrushes and more, to the hospital to maintain good hygiene to help patients recover better and prevent the spread of infections.

“The Dis-Chem Foundation is privileged to care for the community through the donation of essential toiletries to the Tygerberg Hospital. We hope that this donation will allow patients to be more comfortable and dignified during their stay at the hospital. We are delighted to be associated with an organisation which does such good,” says

Candice Osry, area administrative manager of Dis-Chem.

Theuns Botha, Western Cape Minister of Health, says they are also grateful for every contribution from the private sector.

“Government’s health budget simply cannot cover for all the needs of our patients.

We channel our budget towards healthservice delivery, and so a donation such as this from Dis-Chem is a wonderful gift,” he says.

Netball trip pulls in coaches

Jump­start your career with free workshop advice

More than 100 coaches from across the Western Cape turned up at the Netball South Africa Spar Proteas Support Road Trip which took place at the Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River last Tuesday.

The road show is a country-wide drive aimed at improving the standard of coaching.

“I’m really glad that we are having coaching of this magnitude at local level,” said Danlee Mathews, a coach at the Western Cape Sports School.”

The programme included coaching ethics, coach and player relationships, skills coaching and tactical play.

Spar Proteas national team coach, Elize Kotze said she was overjoyed with the turnout. Participants received a Mitre ball and a training DVD to assist when they return to their clubs and schools.

A free workshop will be held to help the youth jump-start their careers.

Juta & Company will host a workshop aimed at helping youth who did not complete matric.

The workshop will cover topics such as identifying education opportunities, how to find bursaries, how to draw up a CV and covering letter, finding work opportunities and preparing for interviews.

Young job seekers between the ages of 16 and 35 are encouraged to attend this information session.

The workshop will be held tomorrow at the Central Library at corner Parade and Darling streets from 09:00 to 13:00.

Few resources, big motivation for cycling club With only three track bicycles as resources, Trackcyclingsa Cycling Club started a programme to “bring beginners into the sport” a year ago.

With this in mind, the club has achieved a remarkable feat, when they recently won 15 medals at the National Track Cycling Championship, held at Bellville Velodrome between 27 and 31 March.

“It was the first time the club and most of the members participated at national championship level,” said Jaco Scholtz of the club.

Debbie Loffel-Dawson, Ryno Kotze, Hendrik Grobbelaar and Herman du Plessis also represented Western Province in the team events. Debbie won gold in the women’s elite team pursuit, as part of the WP team, while Hendrik and Ryno earned bronze in the master’s team sprint.

The 11th Carel du Toit 5 km Fun Walk, in aid of the Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children, will be held this Sunday 21 April.

The walk will take place at the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital, where the school is situated, at 09:00.

All the proceeds will go towards the Carel du Toit Centre, which is nationally considered as the leading educational institution for deaf children.

Here deaf children are taught to communicate with speech.

If a child is diagnosed with deafness early enough and fitted with the correct hearing aid, they can learn to speak normally, attend a mainstream school and reach their full potential.

Children who are diagnosed with deafness too late are unable to catch up on developmental delays. These children will stay outsiders to the community due to their lack of speech and language, being unable to ex-

press themselves sufficiently.

Carel du Toit is the only centre in the country that accommodates deaf children from birth.

The Centre also runs a support programme for parents of deaf children. This programme can be attended from the moment the child is diagnosed with a hearing disability, regardless of their age.

Dog-owners are also welcome to enter their dogs for this fun-filled event.

The route is also wheelchair and pram friendly.

Help a deaf child to talk and lead a normal life. The entry fees are R40 (adults), R30 (children u-12) and R30 (dogs). The first 500 entrants qualify for a goodie bag.

Spread joy of the written word For many the pure bliss of cracking open a new book is a rare experience.

Many schools simply don’t have enough books – new or second-hand. But you can change that, especially for schools and libraries countrywide experiencing a shortage of books due to a shortage of funds.

To feed the reading need, the Radio Sonder Grense/Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (RSG/KKNK) Book Collection campaign addresses this shortage by collecting books for underprivileged communities.

The 15-year-old campaign has thus far collected and distributed more than a million books.

Last year, the public’s generous donations saw 56 404 books amassed.

In support of the campaign, Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets countrywide are providing collection points for books customers no longer use, says a statement.

The public is invited to contribute to the campaign by donating all types of books – fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, children’s literature, encyclopaedias and reference books, old and new – until Tuesday 30 April.

The books can be deposited into branded golden trolleys at the entrance to the stores.

Books will be distributed to needy schools, libraries and community organisations by the Vryburgers Diensorganisasie.

Eerste musiekvideo vir Skelmbosch­driemanskap LOUISA STEYL Die plaaslike rockgroep, Skelmbosch, het onlangs sy eerste musiekvideo bekendgestel.

Die video vir sy liedjie, “Die Vierde Bedryf”, is ook die eerste poging van Sean Schoeman, die groep se basspeler, as redigeerder.

Die videoskote van die groep se lewendige optrede is op die D’Aria-wynplaas in die winter opgeneem, terwyl die res van die video in Rondebosch op ’n treinstasie afspeel.

Jakes Steenkamp, Skelmbosch se tromslaner, sê die treinstasie simboliseer die groep se reis in die musiekbedryf. “Dit is die begin van ons reis,” sê hy.“Ons is hier vir ’n doel,” voeg Sean by.

Sedert TygerBurger in November 2011 met Skelmbosch gesels het, sê Sean, werk die groep baie hard aan hul produk.

Neil Schoeman, die groep se kitaarspeler, sê Skelmbosch is ook tans besig om sy nuwe enkelsnit, “Formule van Deursigtigheid”, op te neem.

Neil sê dat Skelmbosch “per ongeluk begin het. Dit het skelm ontstaan,” sê hy grappenderwys.

Die groep het in 2010 bymekaar gekom,

maar het eers ’n jaar later die eerste keer opgetree.

Danksy hul naam neem mense aan dat hierdie ’n alternatiewe Afrikaanse groep van Stellenbosch is, maar Neil en sy broer, Sean, is eintlik oorspronklik van Potchefstroom. “Ek het dié naam in ’n koerant gesien,” verduidelik Neil van hoe hy op die groep se naam gekom het. Die woord “Skelmbosch” het verskyn op ’n plakkaat van die groep, New Holland, en Neil het eers gedink daar word verwys na ’n ander groep. Toe hulle besef dit is nie die geval nie, het hulle Skelmbosch vir hulself toegeëien. “Skelmbosch is ons eie plek wat ons geskep het vir onsself... en almal is hier welkom,” sê Neil bedagsaam.

Die groep se musiek kan aanlyn gratis afgelaai word.

“Ons musiek is gratis, maar kom na ons shows toe om ons te sien optree,” is volgens Jakes die groep se wekroep.

Comedy Central:

Epiphany are ready to release their first single.

Ready for road to stardom Fresh and funky local band, Epiphany, has recently recorded their first single, Place Called Home, and is ready to present their first piece of work to the public.

Started in December, Epiphany is the brainchild of Valentino van der Schyff (lead male vocal) and Tina Gordon (lead female vocal). The two had already played together and decided to start a new band that would play both covers and originals.

They met with Bradley Adams (lead guitar) who suggested the idea of a six-piece.

Having worked on the idea since mid2012, Tina and Valentino asked Bradley for help put a band together and so, Waldo Sam-

uels (bass guitar), Angelo Bagley (keyboard and synthesizer) and Julian D Maree (drums) joined the fold.

Within their first months of rehearsals, the band quickly became a tight act, adding songs to their repertoire.

Since the beginning of January this year, Epiphany has been performing across Cape Town. The band says they are able to play an array of music and accept song requests ahead of scheduled gigs.

Mclaren Circus is in town A treat this year is Misty, the rare white Bengal tiger.

She is the star of the mixed big cats act and even does the Micheal Jackson moonwalk.

Die Durbies, wat meestal in volle beheer was, kon inderdaad met beter afronding veel verder gewen het. In die B-afdeling het Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege en die Universi-

teit Wes-Kaapland albei 50-talle in hul eerste amptelike wedstryde hierdie seisoen op hul kerfstok geplaas.

Hoewel NNK aanvanklik goed opgekeil is deur Brackenfell, het die Parowiete geleidelik die oorhand gekry om met 50-14 te seëvier. UWK, ’n bevorderde nuweling in die Superliga, het op sy beurt sewe keer agter Villager se doellyn gaan draai vir ’n vreugdevolle sege van 52-13.

Kuilsrivier is goed vasgevat deur Hamlets, maar het net-net met 26-25 gewen. Goodwood (7-32 t Primrose) en Hands & Heart (2631 t Valsbaai) het egter op hul baadjie gekry.

Die komende naweek se program (tuisspan eerste) is: Durbanville-Bellville t Bellville, Belhar t Victoriane, SK Walmer t Tygerberg-klub, Valsbaai t Kuilsrivier, NNK t Hamlets, Goodwood t UWK, Hands & Heart t Brackenfell.

“Ons het die eerste wedstryd met 0-5 verloor en dit was chaos. Ons het ná die wedstryd bymekaar gekom en net gepraat en besluit om die wedstryd as nog ’n gewone wed-

stryd te benader en net te speel soos ons elke Vrydag doen,” vertel Regardt Laubscher van die span.

Die volgende wedstryd het hulle in die doodsnikke ’n drie gedruk en die volgende wedstryd met 6-0 gewen om hul plek in die halfeindronde te bespreek. Hulle het die Quicfic Raiders met 5-2 gewen en die Rabie Legends in die eindronde met 3-2.

“Die spanne teen wie ons gespeel het, is topspanne van reg oor die Kaap. Ons het net vir mekaar gespeel en die ouens het ongelooflike karakter gewys,” sê Laubscher.

ie Hoërskool Durbanville se eerste rugbyspan het die nuwe skoleseisoen die afgelope Saterdag op ’n hoë noot ingelui met ’n indrukwekkende oorwinning oor die Hoërskool Strand.

Die Durbies het met verreweg die meeste balbesit die besoekers vir die grootste deel van die wedstryd op hul agtervoete gehad en welverdiend met 18-7 gewen.

Die eindtelling in Stellenberg se nederlaag van 12-29 teen HTS Drostdy vertel gewis nie die volle waarheid nie. Die Stellies het aanvanklik die botoon gevoer – dit was net gebrekkige afronding wat verhoed het dat hulle met die draaislag (12-12) nie ’n stewige voorsprong gehad het nie. Ongelukkig kon die tuisspan nie in die tweede skof hierop voortbou nie.
