Here is the Kuils River Technical High School Choir which hopes to make a difference in the community.

TAMSYN COERECIUS The saying, the future is in the hands of our children, is a reflection of the motto the school choir at Kuils River Technical High live by with their new outreach programme to disadvantaged communities. Not ones to rest on their laurels, learners Kim Smith and Byron Milton started the group and use their talent to make a difference. They sing songs that have a profound message and take time to incorporate story telling in their masterpieces of music. With their spunk and positive attitudes both Kim and Byron invited learners at the school to join their choir who were not occupied by other activities after school. “We decided to start the choir because previously it was not well established and for the love of music,” says Kim. Their outreach programme entails performances at old age homes, orphanages as well as motivational talks with learners from various schools. “I have sympathy when it comes to the poor and we do this from our heart to make a difference even in the smallest way possi-

ble,” said Byron. Byron who has had experience singing, plays the role as choir director and chooses songs that have a message. Their music style and songs are influenced by choral, African and traditional music with a youthful twist. “Singing takes you to another world. It brightens up your day and that is what we want others to experience when we sing,” said Kim. Kim also says that this is a good way to keep busy after school and not fall foul of something. Wayne Klaassen who is on the governing body of the school says: “There are miracles happening at this school and these learners are the example of it.” The many challenges these two have faced include administrative work for which they are responsible. They also describe how they are often demotivated because of failed attempts by previous choirs. Financial difficulties are the biggest concern, they say. The choir will be performing at the Alexander Sinton High School on 29 May. V If you would like to assist in helping these learners, phone Wayne Klaasen on 021 906 0040.
