o more clogging up and blockages. This is the good news for Kalkfontein residents with regards to their sewerage and stormwater drainage systems. In the past, and numerous times this year, the drainage systems have overflowed, literally leaving streets soaking wet and reeking of sewage. Last week the city installed a sand trap that will now allow the city workers to remove rubbish from the sewer before it can cause blockages. Johannes Pula, chairperson of the Kalkfontein Development Forum said this surely is a relief to residents. In the past, Pula says, residents have complained about the unhygienic conditions caused by the overflowing of the drains. “They feel overjoyed, this will make a great impact on them as it was really not a pleasant story to have the drains overflow, almost every weekend.” Pula adds the council truck responsible for unblocking the drains was a hazard in the community. “Some of our children were fatally knocked by these trucks.”

Health hazard Other hazards caused by the overflowing of the drains he says are the damage to the roads, the plague of flies in the area and the children playing in the dirty water. Affected streets were a mess during the winter. Philemon Mashoko, director of the Water and Sanitation Department of the City of Cape Town said it is not a new drainage system, but only the installation of a new sand or rag trap installed by the city. “It is basically a big manhole, so designed that inappropriate materials in the sewage can settle out (sink to the bottom).” The sandtrap will collect rubbish in the sewer, which will be removed on a regular basis as the sandtrap will be cleaned regularly. Crackdown on motorists This past weekend 12 motorists were arrested in Kuils River for driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspects were arrested on Saturday 8 December by the City of Cape Town metro police and members of Kuils River police during a joint weekend operation. Officers arrested a total of 39 suspects for various offences and issued 259 traffic fines during patrols and operations across the Cape Metropole this past weekend.

property. The installation of the sandtrap was a three-day process and was completed in Kalkfontein last week by Amandla GCF Construction CC, subcontracted by the City of Cape Town. The same installation was done in Wesbank, outside Blue Downs, where residents had experienced similar problems.

Get free vehicle safety check

A sewage stench is apparently coming from the Kuils River and the river needs to be cleaned says a local resident.

In order to ensure the safety of vehicles on the roads this festive season, motorists can go for free vehicle safety checks. The City of Cape Town Traffic Services are conducting free basic vehicle safety checks at the following northern suburbs traffic centres: Bellville, Kuils River, Brackenfell, Hillstar, Goodwood and Durbanville, The checks will be conducted between 10:00 and 14:00 each working day from 26 November to 14 December. Roads in and out of the city are expected to be very busy during this festive season as many visitors – local and international, descend on the Mother City. Traffic Services will launch “Operation Exodus” which is aimed at clamping down

on unsafe vehicles leaving the city, with a particular focus on targeting long-distance public transport operators. A strong emphasis will be placed on the enforcement of public transport vehicles over the festive season, with the aim of reducing the accident rate on our roads. Various public transport interchanges, which include Joe Gqabi, Bellville/Parc Du Cap, Mfuleni, Langa, Du Noon, Cape Town Station, the R27 and Epping will also be manned by traffic officers. Vehicle check points and speed checks will be set up in the vicinity of the abovementioned interchanges. There will be increased traffic deployment around all of the beaches within the city.

‘Rotten river stinks’

Mfuleni police managed to secure a double murder conviction for a suspect apprehended by them. Hugene Simon (31), from Wesbank was found guilty of double murder on Friday 16 November by the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court. Simon was given a 14-year jail sentence for each murder. He will thus be serving 28 years in jail. The suspect was arrested by police after

he had stabbed two men in Wesbank on Sunday 29 November 2009. The two victims were declared dead on arrival of the ambulance. Simon’s bail was opposed and he remained in custody until 13 May 2011. Col Luyanda Damoyi, station commander of the Mfuleni police congratulated the members of the Mfuleni police who were involved in the apprehension and conviction of Simon.

The current condition of the Kuils River is not good and from it comes a horrendous sewage stench. So says local resident Jason Kannemeyer about the river which flows right past his doorway in Riverton, Kuils River. Kannemeyers says for the past few months he has been alerted to the stench coming from the water in the river, a stench he believes originates from the sewage plant in Sacks Circle, Bellville-South. He suspects the sewage is coming from a pipe that channels effluent water into the river, from the sewage plant. “What had made me report this situation, is my daughter had a school project about pollution in the community and here we have this big source of pollution in the community,” he says. In October last year, TygerBurger reported about the cleanup project launched by the City of Cape Town, specifically targeting rivers as part of the Kader Asmal integrated catchment management project. This project would see to the cleaning of 14 rivers in the Cape Metropole over a twoyear-period. TygerBurger enquired from the city about the cleaning of the Kuils River, which according to Kannemeyer has not been

done yet, which he finds very disturbing as the stench, he says, is not healthy to live with. “The only thing they do is come at the beginning of winter and mow the grass next to the river, but no cleaning is done to the river.” After hearing about the situation and the allegations of sewage in the Kuils River local ward councillor, Jacob Jacobs took it upon himself to investigate and report this issue to the authorities. “The matter has now been reported to Solid Waste and they will investigate to see what the situation is,” says Jacbos. He adds that previously they have received numerous complaints about this stench and this matter will now be urgently attended to. Osman Asmal, director of Environmental Resource Management Department, City of Cape Town says the river has been cleaned as phase one of the cleanup project, which includes the initial control of aquatic and terrestrial weeds and removal of tonnes of litter in the section between the N2 and Spine Road. He says phase two will be done which is the ongoing follow-up of invasive weeds and maintenance of the cleared areas. The work will now commence on the section between Fairtrees Road and the N2.

Tubby Nel, ’n inwoner van dié straat wat aan die spits van die verkeerskalmeringstryd is, het TygerBurger gekontak nadat die chevron-teken wéér getref is. Nel sê Mitchellstraat loop veral deur onder motoriste wat van plaaslike kuierplekke huis toe ry en dan in dié straat jaag. TygerBurger het telkemale berig oor die aansoek vir spoedwalle in dié straat. In die laaste berig oor die kwessie het die Stad Kaapstad dit duidelik gestel dat die Stad se paaie- en vervoerafdeling die straat geëvalueer het en dat dit nie kwalifiseer vir verkeerskalmering in die vorm van spoedwalle nie. In terugvoering het die Stad redes aangevoer oor hoekom die straat nie goedgekeur kan word vir verkeerskalmering nie, maar net vir bykomende waarskuwingstekens.

Van die redes het ingesluit dat die straat as ’n klas 5-residensiële straat geklassifeer word; dat dit in ’n mediumdigte residensiële area is; dat die verkeersvolume nie hoog is nie en dat die verkeersvolume deur die straat se kapasiteit gedra kan word. Nel het dit egter nie aanvaar nie en het hom weer tot Brett Herron, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir vervoer, paaie en stormwater, gewend en ’n aansoek ingedien. Van die punte wat Nel in sy aansoek noem, sluit in: “Chevron-tekens is reeds etlike jare gelede in Mitchell- en Hoekstrate aangebring, maar het tot nou nog nie ons probleem opgelos nie. Die meeste ongelukke vind plaas as gevolg van spoed, wat nie deur chevron-tekens voorkom kan word nie. Dit is net ’n wonderwerk dat iemand nog nie noodlottig beseer is nie.” Jacob Jacobs, wyksraadslid van die gebied, het gesê hy het die toneel besoek en die nommerplaat is aan verkeer oorhandig om dit te ondersoek. Intussen is die aansoek vir verkeerskalmering in Mitchellstraat weer op 21 November by subraad 21 ingedien as ’n aansoek van prioriteit. Volgens die subraadagenda is hierdie aansoek saam met andere aan die departement van vervoer, paaie en stormwater ingedien. Die aansoek is tans hangende.

New Kuils River school for 2013 News on the local education front is that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will open a new school in Kuils River in 2013. Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for Provincial Minister of Education, Donald Grant, from the WCED says Soneike High School, in the Metro East District will be a new temporary mobile school in Kuils River which will later move into the Silversands High School building, once their new school is

completed in June next year. Soneike High School have enrolled 130 learners for the 2013 school year in Grades 8 and 9. For enquiries contact 021 900 7100/7154. Schools open on 16 January and the WCED urges parents to note the following: V Parents should buy uniforms and stationery in December and should not wait for their January salaries to do so. As of 26 November until 2 December, the three police stations which fall under the Kuils River cluster namely Kleinvlei, Kuils River and Mfuleni, arrested 522 suspects. Of these 39 were arrested for the possession of drugs, 36 held for common assault, 18 for assault to cause grievous bodily harm and 14 for domestic violence.

Don’t use con when the city offers refuse service Be careful of being ripped off by a young man with a blue or grey bakkie who offers to take away your garden refuse. His quote was much higher than the usual guys, who come round – always asking a fair price, but because its nearly Christmas, I agreed to pay him. As I was still in my dressing gown, he took a chance and left most of the rubbish behind – leaving some of it trailing into the road. He also asks if you have any scrap metal, which he is willing to take away for nothing. This guy works alone and is reasonably welldressed. I urge people not to use him and maybe that will keep him out of the Durbanville area. The city does not provide a collection service for garden refuse specifically. If, however, your wheelie bin is not filled to capacity with regular refuse, you may place bagged garden refuse in the bin to be removed on the normal collection day. The resident must bear in mind that this is limited to grass and small cuttings, and does not include tree branches and stumps. Money could have helped many Natalie Mayer’s sad tale (“Can you help brave puppy make it”, TygerBurger 5 December) of Bella, the labrador puppy with parvovirus who was rescued and treated at a vast and apparently unaffordable cost since her rescuers are now asking for financial help to pay for the vets fees, raises a number of important questions about the work that animal welfare groups do for the canine population. Natalie’s letter appeared to be inherently critical of these groups, suggesting that they would act in an unfeeling and uncaring way by destroying the dog, and while it is true that, in all probability, they would have had the dog put down, it is worth remembering that none of these welfare groups exists by right and that they all have to raise funds through tireless

fundraising. It is how they spend these funds, which in most cases are preciously small, to the benefit of all dogs that their actions differ from Bella’s student Samaritans. Parvovirus, apart from being exceptionally contagious and inducing terrible pain and suffering in the animal, is extremely expensive to treat. The R10k cost of Bella’s intervention could have vaccinated 500 animals against the disease, or treated 40 dogs with biliary, infections or lacerations, or a dozen dogs with fractures, or sterilised a vast number of strays. In other words the money the vet charged to cure Bella had the potential to save many more canine lives and that is why it is important to support such welfare groups, where one can, through donations of food that they can sell, or by putting that spare 10 cents in a collecting tin. While I wish them well in their appeal for money to pay the vet’s bill, maybe they might consider, how the money they have spent could have made a difference to not one, but hundreds of equally deserving canine friends and that that is the real work of those hard-working welfares. Proposals, including one for our white elephant stadium The city I hear on the news are requesting that we, Jan Publiek come forward with ideas on how to make the Cape Town Stadium economically viable. This statement actual surprises me because when we give proposals on how to create employment there does not seem an interest then but now we are good enough to try and play Einstein to help the city saddle the white elephant. My response to that call is sell the stadium to a consortium from across the seas. Now back to we the unemployed; let me place a proposal that may just make our unemployment queue shorter. We are a African country with traditions and cultures that can never be changed no matter how Western we try and want to be. Here in the Cape Flats we have the hawker business person, standing on the pavement selling their wares and goods. We had the horse and cart team doing exactly the same. Both last mentioned created employment and created business. I went to a fleamarket this past Sunday and I admired how people were using a trailer which they conveyed with a vehicle to sell their wares. I could not get this picture out of my head and saw a potential for our youth who cannot find work to operate trailer orientated businesses. Making (very) cool memories ANDRÉ BAKKES There were moments in the Arctic icebox where one fully expected to see an emperor penguin doing his happy feet dance on the other side of a tiny frosty glacier. Snow World in Canal Walk, the first of its kind ever seen in South Africa, is a must for kids and adults who are looking for some wonder in their lives. It is also the ideal place to experience a nippy winter in a sweltering hot summer. “Nippy” is perhaps an understatement. The temperature wasn’t so much “nippy” as it was piercingly penetrating and bitingly brisk. The whole surreal undertaking will undoubtedly leave one cool memory in its place. There were ice slides for everyone, ice thrones for the regal wannabes, ice climbing for the brave, ice sculpting for the curious and ice for snowmen.

Suffice to say ice was ever present in the icy world of blue fingers and goose bumps. Gloves would have been handy. The TygerBurger photographer’s index finger could not stop pressing the shutter release button, partly because of the myriad amount of magical moments and also his finger was frozen to the button itself. To put the cherry on top of the ice cream cake, kids can have their picture taken with Santa Clause in a realistic frozen cave. Snow World is a complete 300 m² indoor snow environment right in the middle of the shopping centre, which includes a play area for the little ones, a thrilling toboggan slide, a six-metre ice climbing wall and a toddler dragon slide. It is open from 10:00 to 22:00 every day until 6 January, so when the summer sun gets too much to handle, there is only one place to go! V For more information about Snow World contact 021 529 9699.

Combination of heavy and beautiful goes up the river LOUISA STEYL Wakato is the Japanese word for “people of the harmonious song”. It took the local band who use the name a few years though, before their name became a perfect fit. The band was formed in 2007 and after many changes, the line-up now includes Stephen Jones on vocals, Riaan van Niekerk on rhythm guitar, Arrie du Toit on lead guitar, Eduan Coetzee on bass and Morne Kleyn on drums. Riaan started the band with his friend, Andor Scholtz, and slowly members started falling in and out of the band. “Later, they ran out of options, so they got me on drums,” Morne jokes: “And then I dragged the rest in.” “We were all in different bands together before, so we know each other,” he says. The name was the idea of their first

drummer, Michael Jones. “Our name is actually perfect for us,” Morne says, adding: “finally the puzzle is right.” When asked to describe their sound, Eduan says: “aggressively diverse.” “It’s the perfect combination between heavy and beautiful,” Riaan states. The band are currently hard at work practising for their performance at the Rock the River festival over New Year’s Eve. Bellville (167/5, gesl.) het met behulp van William Hantam (75), Handré Theron (41*) en Chris Russell (4/17) vir Pinelands (122) met 115 lopies in die stof laat byt, terwyl Durbanville (129/2) ’n agtpaaltjie-sege oor Mitchells Plain (144) bewerkstellig het, danksy veral Mark de Stadler (6/41), Jaco Castle 61*) en Wesley Thomas (53*).
