The vibracrete wall along the R300 highway in Sarepta will now be replaced by concrete palisade fencing. The wall was meant to keep criminals out of the residential area, but due to vandalism it never served its purpose.
“People have easy access to the residential area from the R300 and they have an easy escape route via the R300,” said one resident. Shortly after the article “Criminals destroy freeway wall”, appeared in TygerBurger on 7 March, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) started working on replacing the wall
with palisade fencing. “Not only is this type of fencing more durable, but also more difficult for criminals to steal,” says Johannes Abraham from Lusasa Construction, the company subcontracted by Sanral for the maintenance of the wall. “This will ultimately save us a lot of money with maintenance costs and it will also be a lot safer
for residents,” he says. According to Abraham, the biggest problem they had with the maintenance of the vibracrete wall was with residents who stole the slabs. “To date we have spent in excess of R30 000 on repairing this specific wall,” said Kobus van der Walt, regional manager for Sanral. Ward councillor Jacob Ja-
cobs has made a number of visits to the area. He says even though the maintenance of the wall is not the responsibility of the municipality, he made every effort to stress the importance of the wall to Sanral. “We are now busy removing the old vibracrete wall and by Tuesday we will start putting up the new palisade fencing,” Abraham says.
