OFFICER’S DEATH: SA’S TOP COP COMFORTS FAMILY

Mourning a brave hero RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

“O

ur country lost a hero.” These are the words of comfort national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega gave a family from Blackheath after the death of a 30-year-old police constable. Constable Rozelle Witbooi from the Kraaifontein police, was on duty on Thursday 13 February in Bloekombos, when she was gun-

ned down. The provincial police said in a statement the deceased and a colleage were pursuing armed robbers. A shootout ensued and Witbooi was shot in the head. Both robbers were also injured. One of them is still at large at the time of going to press. Witbooi, a member of the police’s crime prevention unit, died on the scene. Phiyega and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Arno Lamoer visited the deceased’s grieving family at their

home in Dennemere, on Friday. “To us she was a hero. She now joins all the others in blue. She could have chosen a different career, but she chose to be a police officer. “Now the Lord has decided you have done what I wanted you to do, but now I want you near me,” Phiyega consoled the family. She said it is a difficult time for all. “Any member in this field does not know his or her hour and day. She did not know what was going to happen that day, she just

responded to a call. ” Phiyega said the deaths of police officers is a war that all need to help fight. “It is our choice as a nation to allow the criminals to do what they do, but, we must continue the fight. “If you do not appreciate your life, you will be selfish and take someone else’s. We must carry the baton she has dropped and continue the fight. Be brave, if she could have fought back, she would have done so,” Phiyega said. V To page 2.
