Buildings at cemetery in dire state

Vagrants setting up camp between the trees on the open field next to the Kuils River cemetery have become a regular sight. There are also structures right next to the cemetery fence. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX

esidents and especially members of the Langverwacht and Surrounds Safety Watch (LSSW) are concerned about the state of the buildings at the Kuils River cemetery as well as the increasing number of vagrants putting up structures in the vicinity. Marshall Kiewiet of LSSW said they have

lodged various complaints with the City and have escalated their concerns to the ward councillor, Desiree Visagie, and JP Smith, Mayco member of safety and security, but to date have not received a response. “The current state of Kuils River cemetery is dire. It has been overrun by vagrants and drug abusers making it unsafe and basically impossible for people to make use of the facility,’’ said Kiewiet.

He said the major issues were the two public toilets that were vandalised and the old keeper’s house which is now “a drug den, used by local vagrants and drug abusers as a place to go smoke mandrax, tik and drink.” The house has been vandalised, with wires and pipes stolen, walls full of graffiti and waste everywhere, he said. Kiewiet sent a video clip of the watch members repairing a damaged water pipe in

the house themselves in January this year. He said general housekeeping at the facility is non-existent. “It took the City more than a year to have the fence (bordering Van Riebeeck Road) repaired damaged by a car accident.’’ He said as a neighbourhood watch they do what they can to keep people out by logging calls with the City and even going to clean up themselves.
