Hawks arrest Crusader DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke A Kuils River man, believed to be linked to a right wing “terror group” was released on R1 000 bail on Friday.

Russel Esau (46) appeared in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court on charges related to terrorism activities.

The Christian Resistance Movement or Crusaders as they call themselves, had allegedly plotted terror attacks in shopping

malls, informal settlements and national key points.

The Hawks arrested Esau in Kuils River on Thursday 6 December, following an operation by the serious organised crime investigators and crime intelligence.

He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, explosives and explosive devices, according to Hawks spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi.

A firearm, smoke grenades and eight rounds of ammunition were found at his bu-

siness premises. “The suspect is believed to have links with the other four suspects that have already been arrested and charged for alleged terrorist activities elsewhere in the country,” said Mulaudzi in a statement last week.

Outside court, Esau denied having any links with the group.

The matter was postponed to March 22 for further investigation.

The group’s alleged leader, Harry Knoesen (60), Riana Heymans and brothers Eric

en Errol Abrahams were arrested in Middelburg and Johannesburg last Friday and appeared in the Middelburg magistrate’s court on Monday 2 December on charges related to terrorism activities.

Knoesen is a retired pastor and former member of the South African National Defence Force.

According to Mulaudzi the arrests follow a two-year intelligence led investigation into the group’s activities.

All four suspects remain in custody.

Stay safe this festive season The provincial minister for community safety, Albert Fritz has warned residents and holidaymakers to be safe during the festive season.

Fritz said there is often a spike in housebreakings during this time as homes are left vacant by owners and tenants who go away on holiday or are out and about.

Fritz gave some tips on how to stay safe.

These include: . Alerting your neighbourhood watch, police, security company, neighbours and street committees when you will be away; . Leaving lights on at home; and . Not letting your refuse bin or paper deliveries pile up whilst you are away.

“The City and the police have activated their festive season safety plans. This includes a heightened approach to safety and preventing break-ins, greater police visibility and close coordination with other safety agencies including metro police and neigh-

bourhood watches.

“At the same time, I urge that we prioritise the safety of our children. Every precaution must be taken to protect them when enjoying beach days, family braais, hikes, movie days at home, shopping and camping trips,” Fritz says.

Your child must be taught to keep doors and gates closed and locked, and that nobody can enter without permission from either a parent or responsible adult.

If you have a home security system installed, teach them how to activate and deactivate it, and to use other security devices like panic buttons, he urges.

“Your children should also have a list of emergency contact numbers saved on their cell phones and available at home near the telephone or on the fridge. These numbers should include the local police station, emergency medical service, a number for your neighbourhood watch, a trusted neigh-

bour, and your private security company,” he says.

Before visiting public spaces such as shopping malls, your children should know important information, including full names, home address and the contact details of one of their parents.

In addition, children should be taught about: . Stranger danger and sharing sensitive information, particularly on social media; . An evacuation plan in case there is an emergency at home; . Cooking and using kitchen appliances safely; and . To stay with groups when out with friends.

“Ultimately, each of us also has a responsibility to ensure safety within our communities and should continue to report crime and be vigilant, particularly over the festive break,” he says.

GET TESTED: In commemoration of World Aids Day, observed annually on 1 December, premier of the Western Cape, Alan Winde lead by example, getting himself tested for HIV/Aids on Thursday 28 November. The test was conducted by provincial health minister, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo. The focus of campaigns run this year is to encourage communities to fight the epidemic. “Knowing your status will not only help you to access necessary health care if required, but will also allow you to take steps to ensure that you do not infect others. The test today was quick and simple. We need to remove the stigma around this disease by ensuring that testing for HIV is as routine as other health checks like having your blood pressure or blood sugar checked,” says Winde. Mbombo says the health department conducted 1.7 million HIV tests and started 41 318 new patients on treatment in the last financial year. “A total of 87 846 residents belong to adherence clubs, which make it simpler for patients to collect their medication, and therefore remain on treatment. We cannot get complacent. Testing and treatment are key to us beating this disease.”

Rights for the disabled The Western Cape department of social development (DSD) along with the rest of the country commemorates national Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between 3 November and 3 December.

For the 2019/20 financial year, DSD has committed R160.9 million for programmes and initiatives for people with disabilities across the province.

In the 2009/10 financial year, the budget was a mere R50.85 million.

Between 2014 and the end of March this year, the department increased the access of “persons with disabilities” and their caregivers or parents and families to specialised support services from 55 323 to 99 800.

The current budget allocation has enabled the department to provide funding for more than 220 non-profit organisations (NPOs) including residential care facilities for adults and children with disabilities, day-care centres for both children and adults with disabilities, protective workshops and social service organisations.

“We are committed to the vision of the creation of a free and just society inclusive of all persons with disabilities as equal citizens. At present, our department provides developmental social welfare services to people with disabilities, their families and/ or caregivers and continues to grow services to people with disabilities, including services to people with moderate and high support needs (severe and profound) intellectual and physical disabilities,” says provincial minister for the department, Sharna Fernandez.

Generally, according to the department there is little statistical information and

virtually no baseline data on the prevalence of disability and/or on the quality of life of persons with disabilities prior to 1994. This goes even for the first term of democratic governance in South Africa. Some basic data was collected after 1999 by different government departments in relation to their specific areas of work.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t yet a social development specific disability act. Instead, there’s a White Paper on the rights of persons with disabilities. The White Paper on the rights of persons with disabilities was approved by the cabinet on 9 December 2015, for public information,” says Fernandez.

The department funds a few early childhood development centres (ECDs) that have managed to mainstream children with disabilities. Through the DSD disability mainstreaming strategy, the department continues advocating, striving for and ensuring that the disability element is inherent in every programme or project, and persons with disabilities are included as one of the beneficiaries or target group.

The department is also working in partnership with the non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector on advocacy on access to services, policy development and availability of mainstream ECDs to persons with disabilities.

Some recent achievements of the services include the approval of the disability mainstreaming strategy, training of social workers on mental disability and a uniform referral pathway for holistic assessment and appropriate referral of persons with disabilities, parent support structures and capacity-building initiatives.

Seun met leerprobleme behaal uiteindelik sukses NIELEN DE KLERK

s jy vir Edith Thomas jare terug gesê het haar seun sou skool voltooi, sou sy seker weens ongeloof in trane uitgebars het.

Hierdie enkelouer van Bellville-Suid het immers jare lank byna alles gedoen om te verseker haar seun kry die gepaste opvoeding.

Sy kan nou nog hoës in die onderwysdepartement se name onthou, want sy het vir soveel van hulle briewe geskryf en gebel om te smeek vir ’n aksieplan.

Haar seun, Aurelien Thomas (18), het al van gr. 1 af gewys hy is intellektueel stadiger as die ander in die klas. Mettertyd, en sonder die nodige ingryping, het die probleem net vererger. Die ander kinders het deurgeseil na volgende grade, terwyl hy nooit kon byhou nie.

In gr. 6 was hy al 14 jaar oud en sy Afrikaans- en wiskundevermoëns was op die vlak van iemand in gr. 1.

Boonop is Aurelien vreeslik geboelie en het menige middag huilend by die huis gekom.

Daardie jaar, in 2015, het sy lewe egter verander. Sy laerskool, Bellville-Suid Primêr, het kort tevore ’n nuwe leerderondersteuningsonderwyser, Anetta Absolom, gekry en Aurelien is na haar verwys.

Absolom het dadelik aan die werk gespring en twee keer per week met Aurelien vergader. Aan die begin kon hy nie basiese konsepte onthou soos hoe die hoofletter “H” lyk nie.

Die twee het egter ure en ure lank gewerk totdat hy ’n deel van sy agterstand kon inhaal.

Hy het selfs op sy eie aandrang ’n “boek” geskryf. Dié boek van ’n paar bladsye lank – “Aurelien se motor” – handel oor Aurelien se perfekte voertuig (’n rooi een van gemiddelde vermoë, maar wat musiek hard kan speel.) Op 6 November 2015 het hy die boek voor die hele skool voorgelees.

Dit bly ’n hoogtepunt in sy lewe. Edith, wat in die gehoor was, kan nog onthou hoe baie sy op die dag gehuil het.

Edith sê hy het hope selfvertroue in die proses gekry.

Die boelies het selfs opgehou om hom te teister.

Daarna kon Aurelien met ’n groter mate van gemak by ’n hoërskool inpas.

Hy is eers na Westcliff-vaardigheidskool, maar nadat hy epilepsie ontwikkel het, is hy na Alta du Toit-skool in Kuilsrivier verskuif.

Absolom sê Aurelien se sukses wys geen leerder moet ooit afgeskryf word nie.

“Elke leerder kan leer. Transformasie is moontlik.”

Aurelien, wat eendag ’n akteur wil word, wil eers Vloot toe gaan.

Hy was onlangs by sy matriekafskeid en net soos in die boek wat hy vier jaar tevore geskryf het, het hy in ’n rooi motor by die plegtigheid opgedaag.

Dentico charity drive a success T

he second Dentico Charity Drive was able to feed and clothe close to 200 people in Kuils River recently.

Dr Nichole Hendricks was inspired to give back to the less fortunate in her community earlier this year after a heart-warming interaction with a man on the street corner near her surgery in Kuils River.

After providing a warm meal on a cold night, the man emphasised how important the exchange was at that very moment.

“He told he had prayed for a long time for someone to help him as he was really down and out. He was really happy when I showed up with some warm food. Faith is really important to me, so that really stayed with me and I was inspired to do more,” says Hendricks.

She exceeded her own expectations when

she launched the Dentico Charity Drive in August and managed to feed 125 people in Kuils River. She decided to do a second drive in December, which received a great response as she gathered donations that was able to feed and clothe nearly 200 people.

“We live in a very tough world and many are going through tough times. When you’re able to lend a hand, you should help those around you. I was very happy with the way people came together to support the Dentico Charity Drive.

“We made a positive difference in so many lives over the weekend. We provided non-perishable food and offered a warm meal to everyone we reached.

“We also provided toiletries and clothes for the young and old. Even nappies and other necessities for a pregnant woman, who

University of Cape Town scientist leads pollen project To hay fever sufferers spread across the Cape: you are not imagining it – the pollen levels are higher than usual.

According to associate professor Jonny Peter, head of the division of allergology and immunology at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Lung Institute, this has been a bumper year for tree pollen in Cape Town.

Based on the data collected since the start of the division’s pollen-monitoring campaign, tree pollen reached the highest level in seven years in Cape Town this September.

Peter adds that this comes on the back of the Mother City’s devastating drought in 2018, where grass and tree pollen were peaking at their highest levels in 10 years.

With pollen levels expected to increase exponentially in the country over the next two decades, the need for a formal nationwide monitoring process is necessary, says Peter.

A multidisciplinary project, called The Real Pollen Count, is currently being led by the division. The project is examining the fluctuating pollen levels in South Africa and the subsequent effects on the human body. It is anticipated that the findings of the project will fundamentally change the allergy treatment process and the way healthcare professionals respond to common allergies like asthma, hay fever and eczema.

In partnership with academics at several leading universities in the country, The Real Pollen Count continues to make significant strides when it comes to examining and responding to pollen levels to better manage conditions like allergic rhinitis, asthma and eczema by obtaining accurate data on the main pollen triggers and when they occur.

The pollen-monitoring campaign has been in place in the Western Cape for 20 years.

Summer Fiesta!

Other provinces have not been so lucky with Gauteng having not been monitored since the 1990s, while cities like Port Elizabeth and Kimberley had not had formal pollen monitoring campaigns in place at all.

Thanks to the campaign, there are now pollen-monitoring devices in seven South African cities: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Durban, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

Peter explains that scientists monitor pollen levels every week using a spore trap.

Thereafter, removing the strip and analysing its contents under a microscope to identify each pollen grain is what is most complex and requires the eyes of trained, expert aerobiologists.

Using a mathematical equation, scientists then calculate the amount of pollen in the air each day to provide the daily counts.

This, he explains, needs to be done for each of the seven spore traps nationwide and requires a team at each university.

To ensure the data is easily understandable for the layman, scientists use the traffic light system to communicate weekly pollen results on the Real Pollen Count website.

Red indicates pollen levels are very high in a specific region and potentially dangerous to pollen allergy sufferers, especially asthmatics. Orange indicates that pollen levels are high, and allergy sufferers should keep outdoor activities to a minimum and use medication to minimise effects.

Yellow and green indicate moderate to low levels of pollen.

“This year, the temperatures rose quite quickly in the early weeks of September, and that probably led to the very high and rapid flowering of certain tree species,” he adds.

Scientists suspect that climate change has a big role to play in the increase in pollen levels in Cape Town specifically. But the team needs to survey data over an extended period to verify this theory and draw accurate conclusions.

Koor ‘dankbaar’ ná onstuimige jaar NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

ie Stadskoor Tygerberg het ’n uitdagende jaar agter die rug.

Nie net moes koorlede in Maart hul leier van sewe jaar groet nie, hulle moes ook ’n nuwe koorleier kies en tussen-in nuwe lede probeer werf en ook hul reünie vier.

Die koor, wat weekliks in Parow repeteer, tree al sedert 1977 op en is een van die bekendste kore in die noordelike voorstede.

“Die situasie het in meer as een opsig onsekerheid gebring oor wat voorgelê het vir die jaar,” vertel Hester Heunis, koorlid en lid van die koorkomitee.

Tog het alles ten goede uitgedraai.

Nadat Linda Claasen aan die einde van Maart die koor verlaat het, het die koor vir Peter Roux op 1 Mei as nuwe leier verwelkom.

“Ons kan met dankbaarheid terugkyk op ’n suksesvolle koorjaar en is opgewonde oor wat vir 2020 voorlê,” beaam Heunis.

Roux is bedags ’n ingenieur by die SuidAfrikaanse Weerdiens, maar het ook ’n lang verbintenis met kore en veral die Tygerberg Stadskoor, waar hy jare lank self ’n lid was en later assistent-dirigent geword het. Bo en behalwe sy werk by die Weerdiens en die Stadskoor is hy ook die musikale bestuurder (Musical Director) van die Cape Town Male Voice Choir en rig hy die Hoërskool Tygerberg se Meisieskoor af. Hy sing ook self in die Schola Cantorum Chamber Choir.

By die Stadskoor het Roux ’n paar veranderings te weeg gebring.

“Peter se visie vir 2019 was om die koor se repertoire te vergroot om buiten klassieke werke ook ligter genres, soos pop enligte jazz in te sluit. Meer gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid was ook deel van die beplanning,” vertel Heunis.

Daarom het die koor vanjaar by twee aftree-oorde, Oude Westhof en La Provence,

Die Stadskoor Tygerberg opgetree en beplan om volgende jaar spesifiek by aftreeoorde in minder bevoorregte areas op te tree.

Ander hoogtepunte sluit in hul deelname aan die Symphonic Praise-konsert saam met die Cape Town Gospel Choir, Kaapse Filharmoniese orkes en die Gugulethu Tenors.

Hulle het ook by “Carols by Fairy Light”, by die Reddam House-skool in Durbanville, opgetree en by die Tygerberg Koorfees by die NG kerk De Tyger. Hul laaste optrede was einde November saam met die Cape Town Male Voice Choir by hul jaarlikse “Summer Celebration Concert” in die Bishop’s Kapel in Rondebosch.

In Oktober het hulle ook vir die eerste keer in 40 jaar ’n reünie gehou.

Sowat 135 mense het by die Skilpadvleiwynplaas byeengekom om die koor te vier.

Hulle het onder meer staaltjies vertel en na ’n uitvoering deur die huidige koor geluister. Party van die stigterslede het ook die verrigtinge bygewoon.

Die koor het al groot planne vir volgende

jaar. Hy gaan onder meer aan die “Last night at the Proms” en “Symphonic Praise”-konserte deelneem. Hulle is ook deur twee komponiste vir konserte genader.

“Een (is) uit Italië, Marcos Vinicius, en (ons is ook genader deur) die bekende SuidAfrikaanse komponis en dosent, dr. Salome Hendrikse, om van hul werke te sing en op te neem, wat in die tweede helfte van die jaar sal plaasvind.”

Die koor is nou hard aan die werk om nuwe lede te werf sodat hulle groter produksies kan uitvoer. Hulle is veral op soek na jonger volwassenes en mansstemme.

Roux hou op 9 Januarie tussen 18:00 en 20:00 oudisies vir voornemende koorlede by die NG kerk De Tyger, Hannes Louwstraat, Parow Noord.

Dit is ook waar die Stadskoor op Donderdagaande van 19:00 tot 21:00 oefen.

iving the gift of unconditional love may seem like a wonderful idea but often the novelty of a puppy or kitten can wear off when the responsibility of pet ownership becomes a reality, says the SPCA Cape of Good Hope.

During the festive season, children are often gifted with new pets – birds, puppies, fish, rabbits and kittens – by their parents.

While the child’s happiness is paramount at the time, all the responsibility that comes with the gift of a pet should be seriously considered first.

Belinda Abrahams, communications manager at the SPCA, explains that Janu-

ary is the month in which the highest number of unwanted pets are surrendered to the SPCA. “In January 2018 and 2019 we saw respectively 1 344 and 1 075 unwanted animals come through our doors; and while the reduction in numbers is encouraging from one year to the next, the numbers are still gravely concerning.”

The situation is the same – if not worse – for exotic animals. Steve Meighan, a Glencairn-based snake conservationist, says it is not uncommon for him to be called to rescue snakes that have been cared for by someone who has not researched the correct diet and habitats of their new pets. “Each animal has needs and those needs are life-long – not only for Christmas. Some reptiles live 15 years or

more, so it’s a long-term commitment.”

He recommends that proper research be carried out before taking the big step. He also says speaking to experienced pet-owners is a good measure to gauge what you’re in for when taking on ownership of a pet.

“If you rush off to buy a reptile without knowledge of what it needs, it will not eat and it will die,” he adds.

Abrahams says the following must be considered before acquiring or gifting an animal: . Can you or the potential owner afford to own a particular animal? This consideration must extend to not only food but also annual vaccination costs, parasite control and unexpected veterinary expenses. . Does the recipient want a pet and the re-

sponsibility associated with pet ownership?

Gifting a pet into these circumstances would result in some serious welfare concerns, and a well-intended “gift” may well face a life of misery and neglect. . Does the potential owner have sufficient space for the animal to live a life where they can express their normal behaviour? . Will adequate shelter be provided? Will the pet be allowed to be part of the family? . Does the potential owner have the time and energy that must be invested in pet ownership to ensure that pets remain stimulated? This is so that they do not develop behavioural problems that will likely end in an animal being given to a shelter.

Most importantly, Abrahams says, pet ownership is a big responsibility. “Animals have little choice as to where they find themselves and it is the owners’ responsibility and duty to ensure that they do not take on animals that they cannot care for effectively and responsibly”.

Motorshow draws thousands Thousands of people flocked to Killarney Raceway on Sunday 8 December for the Killarney Motorshow.

With motor vehicles from all eras and designs for all tastes on display, along with

passenger rides, stunt shows, demos, parades and even some racing the day had something on offer for everyone.

Riding demos and balancing competitions were held in the Nomads Trials section at the motorshow.

is nou al meer as ’n week sedert ’n man van Parow spoorloos verdwyn het, en daar is steeds geen teken van hom nie.

Stephan Albertyn Greyling (39) het op Saterdag 30 November sy ouerhuis in Wrenchstraat, Glenlily in Parow verlaat en is sedertdien as vermis aangemeld.

Sy pa, Dirk Greyling, sê hy is erg bekommerd oor sy seun se welstand.

Stephan is slank, het donker oë,

bruin hare en is 1,9 m lank. Ten tyde van sy verdwyning was hy in ’n grys broek, swart trui, baadjie en sandale geklee.

“Ons het nie gestry of baklei nie,” sê Dirk.

Stephan is sy enigste kind.

Dirk het reeds sy kind by die Parow-polisie as vermis aangemeld.

Hy het ook die hulp van die Pink Ladies, ’n nie-regeringsorganisasie wat vermiste mense help opspoor, ingespan.

Dirk sê hy vermoed Stephan is nog êrens in die noordelike voorstede.

“Hy het nie gesê waarheen hy gaan nie. Hy is ’n baie eenkant-persoon en het nie eintlik baie vriende nie.”

Die Parow-polisie het bevestig dat ’n persoon by hulle as vermis aangemeld is, en dat die ondersoek steeds aan die gang is. Teen druktydis hy nog nie gevind nie.

Wanneer vrees jou pootjie Dit maak my altyd ietwat angstig as mense my vra waarvoor ek bang is.

Dis ironies, ek weet: ek’s bang vir ’n lys van dinge waarvoor ek bang is.

Want sien, die meeste mense het een of twee goed wat hulle nagmerries gee. In my geval het ek lyste en lyste van bangmaakgoed. Soms is daar selfs sublyste (party spinnekoppe maak my bang – die a-lys spinnekoppe, maar nie alle spinnekoppe nie – die b-lys spinnekoppe).

Dit is meestal die bekende vrese wat my ook bang maak: slange, hoogtes, misdaad, vinnige karre, groot honde, vlieg, salmonella, vertrappings, donderstorms...eintlik maar alles behalwe narre.

Sit vir iemand ’n rooi neus aan en kleur sy hare helder en ek’s heeltemal fine.

Maar moenie te trots op my raak nie. Ek was ook al bang ek word bang vir narre.

Vrees is meestal ’n nagmerrie (see what I did there?) maar soms, net soms, maak bang(ge)maakstories die beste stories.

Soos die keer toe ek en my man op ons wittebrood Thailand toe is.

Soos genoem, is ek nie mal oor vlieg nie. My man, wat in daardie stadium nog nooit in ’n vliegtuig was nie, het heel heldhaftig belowe om my op te pas. Ek’s byna 100% seker sy presiese woorde was: “Ek sal jou hand styf vashou.”

Ons was skaars in die lug of die kajuitpersoneel kondig aan dat daar groot donderstorms is (nog ’n vrees) en dat ons ’n ruk lank turbulensie sal ervaar. Byna dadelik begin ek hiperventileer en gryp ek die naaste papiersak waarin ek kan asemhaal. Asem in en uit.

Ná ’n oomblik hiervan onthou ek dat ek my man se hand kan gryp (hy’t immers belowe), maar waar my man se hand moet wees, is niks nie. Net ’n gekreun. Daar het my man toe erge vliegsiekte.

Hy moes met alle mag probeer om nie op te gooi nie, terwyl ek met alle mag probeer het om nie te huil van die vrees nie. Ons arme, arme medepassasiers.

In Thailand aangekom het ek toe ontdek ek is bang vir tsunami’s. Nee, regtig. Een aand word ek wakker en is vas oortuig ek kan ’n tsunami hoor aankom. Die lug maak dan sulke golfgeluide. “Daar’s ’n tsunami,” fluister ek en maak my man wakker, ’n pantoffel al aan my een voet. My man steur hom skaars aan my. “Dis die aircon,” mompel hy. So was dit toe.

(Ter verdediging wil ek net sê dit was ’n baie lawaaierige aircon.)

Elk geval, later daardie week gaan ons op ’n romantiese uitstappie waarin ’n man ons op ’n vlot deur ’n rivier in ’n Thailandse woud begelei.

Die man verstaan nie Engels nie en ons verstaan nie Thai nie, maar dit keer hom nie om vir ons interessanthede uit te wys nie.

Een woord wat hy byna die heeltyd herhaal, is iets wat soos “Mia” klink. Hy sê dit so dikwels, ek neem net aan dit beteken “mooi”. Toe nou nie. Halfpad deur ’n uur lange uitstappie, besef ek hy wys na slange. Nie jou gewone slange nie. Sulke helder swart-en-geel slange – wat meestal in takke bo ons koppe is.

Natuurlik krimp my hele lyf ineen en ek gee sulke klein beangste gilletjies. Ons toergids vind dit toe verskriklik snaaks en besluit om nog meer moeite te doen om die “Mias” uit te wys.

Dit was nou nie meer elke 50 m dat ons een sien nie, maar elke 15 m en elke liewe keer draai hy om en lag terwyl ek gril.

Dit is seker maar wat ’n mens moet doen (ná die tyd) – om te draai en te lag vir jou eie vrese (terwyl jy regmaak vir nog). - Nielen de Klerk

So nou sit hulle maar in die donker en bid om genoeg bestellings uit te kry om minstens einde van die maand vier werknemers se salarisse te kan betaal.

Moenie almal op straat geld gee Wanneer sal mense leer om nie vir bedelaars geld te gee nie? Ek het onlangs weer verby ’n bekende bedel-gesig geloop terwyl hy hom in ’n hoekie met een of ander middel inspuit (ek twyfel of dit insulien was).

Dié man is een van die ouens wat dikwels by die verkeersligte naby Tygervallei-winkelsentrum staan en penne verkoop.

Let us end femicide in 2020 Let’s be honest, 2019 has been a rollercoaster ride for South Africans, especially women.

Femicide often topped the Twitter trends lists after one more woman went missing or was found dead at the hands of a man they knew.

As a man, I am disgusted that I am most probably put in the same “men are trash” category with these men that commit such hateful crimes.

But then again, as a gay man, I am relieved that I am seen differently from “straight” men.

You see, growing up in a small township, I was often mocked for being different from other boys. I hated running after a soccer ball or playing with miniature cars, but I did that anyway because I did not want to be teased.

But playing with the boys did not stop them from teasing me because I sucked at those games, I would rather spend my time watch-

ing YoTv, reading a book or helping my grandmother cook. Back to the femicide issue, I am relieved as a gay man that women are more comfortable around me.

Having a drink with my lady friends, they feel comfortable enough to leave their drinks with me because they know that I would not, in any way, try to take advantage of them.

I can pick them up to go out and drop them off at their houses in the early hours of the morning and not once would they feel that I would abduct and/or kill them.

You see, stories of women like Anene Booysen, Karabo Mokoena, Uyinene Mrwetyana and many other women who have died at the hands of men have made men look like creatures. My wish for 2020 is that men do better, gay men included. I hope we do better to protect women and teach young girls that they should not sacrifice their safety for the sake of love.

Die tyd in verkeer is tyd wat ’n mens eerder met jou gesin of familie kon deurbring, of ten minste beter kon benut. Dis regtig onregverdig dat ons as publiek vir die foute van die regering moet boet.

EMS gearing up for festive season RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj The festive season is a time of year when people make their way to the beach, theme parks, holiday homes, nature reserves, restaurants and bars – just about anywhere where fun is to be had.

It is also the time when there are more cars and pedestrians on the road, people consume more alcohol and tend to let their hair down.

Sadly though, it is also the time of year when people lose their lives on the road.

It is for this reason the Western Cape government’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is preparing for a busy season.

At the emergency communications centre on the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital in Parow, up to 10 trained staffers man the switchboard – your first point of call in an emergency.

That single call could be one of close to 1 500 incoming calls they receive on the day.

The calls vary from car accidents, to pedestrians knocked down, heart attacks, respiratory problems and birth complications, all classified as priority 1, or P1 incidents. Then there are also the less serious cases. These include a cut to the finger or dizziness which are as a priority 2, or P2 incident.

The different categories help the call takers, dispatcher and ambulance personnel prioritize emergency cases.

This is one of the ways EMS try to use its strained resources, one of the supervisors told TygerBurger during a visit to the centre last week.

“Once the call is received by the operators and the details are logged, it gets transferred to the dispatcher who then relays the information to the ambulance nearest to the emergency,” the supervisor says.

There are 50 to 64 EMS ambulances across the metropole – stretching from Sir Lowry’s Pass and Gordon’s Bay to Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Philippi (the so-called red zones) to Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester in the Boland, the South Peninsula and Atlantis on the West Coast.

“Our team has a turnaround time of 15 minutes from the time we receive the phone call to the point where it gets transferred to

the dispatcher and ultimately the ambulance itself to respond to the call. This however is not the case on some days. Often the response time can take between half-an-hour to an hour.”

According to the supervisor, it is important that when people call, they share the exact details.

Another supervisor says the information supplied to the centre operators such as names, surnames, age, gender, address, con-

tact details and the type of injury are automatically shared with the dispatcher and ambulances via their computer system. These details assist ambulance personnel to get to the scene as soon as possible and informs them about what type of emergency they need to prepare for.

“Sharing landmarks in the area with the EMS also helps us travel to the scene faster,” the supervisor says.

According to the team leaders all operators undergo stringent training to enable them to handle stressful emergency calls.

They know exactly how to obtain information required to dispatch an ambulance, and are trained in first aid.

Some of the operators have even assisted in child birth.

It is also important that they know how to handle hysterical phone calls.

“In this case, the first thing they have to do is to calm the caller down.

“Then they need to get as much details from the caller and assist them in any way they can, while also making sure that the ambulance services are on its way,” the supervisor explains.

Working as a call taker at the emergency communications centre or being a dispatcher is by no means a nine to five job – in fact, they work 12 hours daily.

“The centre is currently experiencing a staff shortage. Combined, there are between 12 to 15 operators and dispatchers on a shift.

With the festive season in full swing, staff are worried about an increased workload as it goes hand in hand with road accidents, drownings and knife or gun attacks.

It is important to know emergency numbers, or keep it nearby. . The EMS is divided into four components – ambulance operations, emergency communications, rescue and healthnet.

F

or many Christmas is a time to be with loved ones around the table eating all sorts of homemade dishes and treats. A time when gifts are placed neatly beneath the Christmas tree, given or received on the

special day to make someone special smile.

For some people out there though, more specifically homeless people, this is not always the case.

There are however ways the public can help brighten their day, by dropping off donations at non-profit organisations which assist the homeless.

One such place is the City of Cape Town’s Safe Space in Culemborg in Cape Town.

“The City advocates responsible giving and does not support direct handouts to street people,” says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health.

Festive season donations of food and clot-

hing can be dropped at the City’s Safe Space.

The provincial department of social development also supports non-government organisations that look after the homeless.

“As part of its day-to-day business, the department gives funding to NGOs that work directly to get people off the streets,” Esther Lewis, spokesperson, told TygerBurger.

Reptiles take over at expo in Bothasig RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Reptile enthusiasts from across the Cape descended on Bothasig this past weekend to take part in the inaugural Cape Town Reptile Expo.

The expo was held on Saturday 7 December and Sunday 8 December at the Abe Sher stadium, Bothasig.

The expo featured a variety of reptiles and reptile products for sale.

“The idea started about five years ago when I got involved in the reptile hobby.

There were expos in Johannesburg and Durban, but nothing in Cape Town.

“After speaking to some people, they all advised me that it could not be done due to permit restrictions in the Western Cape.

I stayed involved in the hobby and finally decided in 2019 that I am going to pursue it.

“I created a group on WhatsApp called ‘Cape Town Reptile Expo’ just to see the response from the reptile community.

Needless to say, the response was great and everyone was really excited about the idea of having an expo,” says Bothasig resident, Keith Lourens.

He teamed up with Marc Heath of Reptiworx to organise the event which featured interactive reptile shows.

“We decided to host the event to bring awareness to the public about reptiles. Our focus is on education, and getting the young ones involved,” Keith says.

In 2017 Keith managed to get South Africa listed on the ever-popular website Morph Market.

“This is a website where people can post various reptiles for sale. I knew a lot of the breeders here in Cape Town and tracked some others down via this website.”

Visitors over the weekend could also enjoy the educational talks that covered various topics related to reptiles.

Some of the reptiles at the expo included ball pythons, red tailed boa constrictors,

reticulated pythons, king snakes, milk snakes, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos and king cobras.

“In most ecosystems, reptiles are the vital part of food chains and they play a huge role, both as the prey species and the predators in ecosystems. They also play the role of a pollinator. Many serious agricultural pests were eliminated by the reptiles.

“Snakes help balance the ecosystem, without snakes we would be overrun with rodents, a lot of wild rodents carry bacteria that is fatal to our average pets. Not only do snakes keep out ecosystems balanced, they too help protect us and our pets,” Keith says.

Walk honours diabetic daughter NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

D

iabetes can strike anyone and isn’t necessarily about unhealthy lifestyles.

Sometimes it can claim the life of otherwise healthy 18-year-olds.

This is part of the message Anthea Usher hopes people will take to heart after the first memorial run honouring her daughter at the end of November.

Anthea’s daughter, Caylee (18), died in March 2018 from diabetic complications – six years after being diagnosed with type 1.

She was born into a family with diabetes and inherited the disease, which saw her injecting herself four times a day.

Before her death, Caylee, who lived with her family in Goodwood, worked at Art Jamming in Willowbridge shopping centre. She was hoping to study journalism this year.

During the last gruelling years of her life, Caylee and her family realised there was a lack of support and information regarding type 1 diabetes.

To deal with her pain and to raise awareness, Anthea organised the Caylee Usher Memorial Walk at Jack Muller Park on 23 No-

vember.

“When I first thought about arranging a walk, in memory of Caylee, during November, it was mostly an emotional call to action and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to achieve,” Anthea admits. “I do know that anything that I ever do, will always be in memory of our beautiful eldest daughter. We will forever miss her gregarious nature, her amazing laugh and smile, her fierce personality and loyalty.”

With time her motivation for the walk also evolved. “I also realised then that this walk isn’t only about Caylee, my family and I, but about all of us who have lost a loved one to diabetes and all of us who live with diabetes.”

The walk was attended by around 130 people including Dr Lyndon Bouah, chief director of the department of sport and recreation, and his team.

Speakers like insulin pump specialist Michelle Wridgway gave insights into the challenges faced by those living with diabetes.

Anthea thanked all the sponsors who helped during the day and people who attended.

“This is only the start,” Anthea promised. “There is more awareness to come.”

Ways to spot a good rental agent Jacqui Savage of Rawson Property Group shares easy-to-check attributes when looking for a good rental agent.

Using a good rental agent is one of the most frequently recommended ways to ensure the ongoing health and growth of a rental asset, particularly in today’s challenging property market.

Not all rental agents, however, provide the same level and quality of service.

So how does one go about finding the right rental partner?

Rawson Property Group’s national rentals manager, Jacqui Savage shared four easy-tocheck attributes when looking for a good rental agent.

Credentials and ongoing training Savage says every rental agent in the country is legally required to have an annually updated Fidelity Fund certificate and be registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board.

She further says South African rental regulations are known to be complex and, according to her, having a rental agent who stays up to date on the latest legal and procedural developments through ongoing training is the best way for landlords to protect their interests and stay on the right side of the law.

“Ongoing training is a great indication of a rental agency that is dedicated to staying

on top of its game. It is also a good way to spot an agent who is willing to go the extra mile to make sure your rental asset performs,” she says.

They have an active presence in your neighbourhood Checking out other rental properties in your area is always a good way to start gauging your local market, but Savage says it also helps highlight the rental agents who are most active in your area.

“A big part of being a successful rental

agent is understanding the various market micro-climates within a neighbourhood.

These can vary significantly by street and property type and make a real difference to rental potential.

“An agent with an active presence in your neighbourhood is far more likely to be in tune with these dynamics and able to place and retain tenants more successfully than those without.”

They have a good reputation Being active in an area may be a good sign,

but it is no guarantee that an agent is keeping their landlords 100% happy.

For this reason, Savage also recommended getting word-of-mouth referrals or references from other local landlords whenever possible.

“It is always a good idea to talk to someone who has dealt with a particular agent or agency before to get a first-hand report of what they are like to work with.

“Independent word-of-mouth referrals are first prize, but if you do not know any other landlords to chat to, a good agent should be able to put you in touch with plenty of happy past and present clients.”

They have stringent standards for background checks and tenants Savage further says it is a sad fact that levels of defaulting tenants are on the rise as the economy puts increasing pressure on the South African pocket.

She adds that rigorous background checks are an absolutely vital service from any good rental agent – preferably paired with security-conscious viewing process and a pool of pre-vetted tenants.

It is also a good idea to ask how your property will be protected during the viewing process.

Duo combine to shine for Bothasig SEAN CAMPBELL

wo home runs by Dayle Feldtman helped Bothasig Knights maintain their unbeaten run with a 10-6 victory over second-placed Bellville Tygers in their Cape Town Baseball Federation fixture played at the PP Smit Sports field on Saturday 7 December.

Feldtman batted 3/4 including the two home runs, combined with Jared Elario’s eleven strikeouts set up the victory for Bothasig.

Feldtman first homered in the third inning and then again in the nineth inning.

Teammate Justin Lazarus also homered in the third inning.

For Tygers, Jonathan Phillips also homered in the third inning and Wesley Greeff in

the sixth inning. Benjamin Smith (3/5) and Darren Boltman (3/4) were Bothasig’s other top hitters. Jonathan Phillips 3/4, Wesley Greeff (2/4) and Haydn Matthee (2/5) did well for Tygers.

Elario pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and walking two.

He was replaced by former VOB Macaw player Kieran Moore. Moore pitched three innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out two hitters.

Tygers started with usually reliable Kevin Townend who gave up six hits and six walks in his 4.2 innings pitched.

Anthony Phillips pitched 3.1 innings with Jonathan Phillips pitching for the last out.

The win gives Bothasig a four-point lead at the top of the log.

At the Rooikrans Sports field in Grassy

Park, home team Grassy Park Crusaders squandered a 4-0 lead to lose 7-4 to VOB Macaws on Saturday.

Crusaders made six errors compared to the three from VOB. Crusaders also recorded four double plays compared to the two of VOB. Derick Baylis (4/6), Lance Gordon (2/5) and Josh Rich (2/5) came out top for VOB with Liam Samuels (2/4), Sergill Thompson (2/4) and Fabian Matthee (2/4) hitting well for Crusaders.

Both teams utilised three pitchers.

In other Major League results, the home teams took the points.

Athlone A’s beat Van der Stel 9-3 and Maitland Giants had the better of Durbanville Villains 13-2 in a match mixed with controversy and emotions.

In the Promotion League, Helderberg Pirates beat Thistle 10-2 in a close game at Radloff Park in Somerset West.

Seven runs from five hits, one error, a walk and a hit by pitch swung the game in Pirates favour after they held a slender 3-2 lead.

Kieran Clackett and Darryn Chalmers shared the pitching duties for Pirates. Revan Plaatjies, Gavin Jefferies and Keagan Watson did duty for Thistle.

In other Promotion League results, Lansdowne Eagles beat Silvertree Titans 14-4 and Westridge Yankees beating Battswood 21-5.

The upcoming weekend sees teams playing on Saturday 14 December and Monday 16 December, which is a public holiday.

Thereafter the teams take a short festive break.

Surprise personal grading for MMA studio Learners at the CJA Jiu-Jitsu Academy perform push-ups during their grading ceremony recently.

Jiu-Jitsu grading takes place The biggest Jiu-Jitsu grading to be held in South Africa transpired over the weekend of 29 and 30 November.

More than 238 people ranging from five years to over 50 graded for from first (white) belt to black belt.

Combat Jiu-Jitsu Academy (CJA), the oldest Jiu-Jitsu school in South Africa, hosted the event.

A typical grading lasts about an hour, but someone wanting to grade for their black belt needs to do so over five days.

This year two students graded for their black belts while one graded for a brown belt.

CJA has a strong ethos of giving back, and once again, a donations trailer was placed outside the grading venue, Durbanville Primary School.

The trailer was filled by the generous parents and students of CJA, and the donations will be given to U-Turn homeless ministries.

The Boa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) studio had a surprise personal grading with Prof Nathan Raaths recently.

“We are an affiliation of Prof Marcello Monteiro de la Riva system of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” says Graham “The Boa” Turner.

He explains that, at present, there are only three black belts in this system on the African continent and that he is honoured to become the latest black belt in this system.

Turner has been involved in martial arts for 35 years and has a fifth degree black belt in combat Jiu Jitsu, having competed in the 1990s in bare knuckle vale Judo competitions, moving into mixed martial arts and professional Thai boxing.

martial arts, de-stress and meet new friends. We are open all through December except on the public holidays. We have a saying here – ‘no matter you as big as a house, small as a mouse, tall as a wall or round as a ball; the boa studio has a place for you.’ I am so proud of every one who graded us,” he says.

Biggest youth T20 tournament set to start

Awqaf SA, in association with Primrose Cricket Club, will host the fourth annual T20 youth cricket tournament from Monday 16 December to Thursday 19 December.

A record 68 teams from the u.11 to u.17 age categories for girls as well as 150 mini-cricketers will take to the field in what has become the largest T20 Youth Cricket Tournament of its kind in South Africa.

This year’s event is of added significance as it will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death in detention of Imam Abdullah Haron.

“Imam Haron was not only a religious leader and political activist who gave his life in advocating social justice, but he was also an avid sportsman who played a significant role in non-racial sport,” Awqaf deputy CEO and tournament convenor, Mickaeel Collier, explained.

The T20 Youth Cricket Tournament started in 2016 and is hosted in association with Primrose Cricket Club and held under the patronage of Cricket South Africa vice-president, Beresford Williams, and Western

Province Cricket Association CEO, Nabeal Dien.

Collier said the tournament is aimed at giving equal opportunity to our youth, irrespective of their economic and social backgrounds.

“In this day and age so much participation in sporting events is reserved for only those who have the funds. Our tournament is a family-friendly event that aims to embody all the positive values of post-apartheid South Africa… we have deliberately chosen to remain at grassroots level.”

“The four-day tournament aims to promote social cohesion and is designed to give the young players a sense of cricket heritage that instills within them the values of social justice via sport,” he said. He called on the community to come out and support the young cricketers who will play at the Primrose Cricket Club and neighbouring fields in Chukker Road in Kenwyn and Rylands.

Blitzboks to ignite CT Sevens

Ready, set and go for this year’s 37th annual end-of-season endurance race for lightweight motorcycles.

End-of-season race this weekend The 37th annual end-of-season endurance race for lightweight motorcycles on Saturday 14 December, on Killarney International Raceway’s 1km karting circuit, is set to provide all the thrills and spills – usually involving some famous faces - for which this long-running event is known.

The eight-hour race began as a two-hour experiment at the end of the 1983 short circuit season, to see whether the temperamental little two-strokes which were at that time standard for this discipline would last long enough at race pace to bring tactics into play.

They did, but the race almost immediately became a two-hour sprint, and was soon stretched to four, then six and finally eight hours. Today, nearly all the entries are drawn from the CBR150 onemake series, and have to conform to the strict class rules.

With a few safety-related exceptions, the machines must be mechanically standard – which makes the racing even more intense.

Also permitted are 200cc Chinese-built motorcycles, which must also be mechanically standard, and two-stroke singles of between 48cc and 85cc, which may be freely modified; the use of 80cc motocross engines in circuit racing chassis is also permitted, provided they were made before 2007.

Entry is open to teams of two, three or four riders, and no competitor may ride for longer than 45 minutes at a stretch – with a minimum break of 10 minutes before they go out again. Riders must be at least 13 years old on the day of the race – except that the organisers may grant permission to race to riders from 11 years and upwards, as long as they can provide proof of at least two seasons’ circuit-racing experience.

However, you’ll also see teams of former champions such as John Craig, who has competed in this event every year since its inception in 1983. The eight-hour is known

for attracting top-class competitors, including former Grand Prix riders, from all over the world, as well as the cream of South African Superbike, Super600 and Super300 contenders. Among the entries are two from the UK, underscoring the international flavour of this longrunning event. It is one of the few motorcycle races in the world to retain the traditional endurance racing “Le Mans Start”, with the motorcycles lined up on one side of the track, each held upright by a crew member, and the riders lined up on the other.

When the flag drops the riders sprint across the track, fling a leg over the saddle, start the bike and ride away.

At one stage in the early 2000s the RST team qualified on pole for several years in a row, only to have their no 17 CBR150 refuse to start, resulting in their bike being last away. Not that it stopped them from winning – it just made the race more interesting for the spectators. The top crews take the eighthour very seriously. Each year motorcycles are built specially for this race, and international riders form “dream teams” to try to beat the local hotshots. This is, however, a punishing event for riders and machines; the top teams will complete up to 550 laps of the onekilometre circuit during the eight hours, and even the top teams will crash at least once during that time. The best part of it for spectators, however, is that the pits are open to the public all day. The New Pits Lounge and Karting Cafe are also open throughout practice and racing for light meals and drinks, with live music and a beer garden offering plenty of shade, so make a day of it. Gates open at 07:30am, racing starts at 10:00 and goes on nonstop till 18:00. Entry is R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12.

Coming off a tournament victory at the Dubai Sevens last week, Seabelo Senatla, who returned to the Blitzboks team this season, will hope to help the Blitzboks emulate their success when they take to the field at the Cape Town stadium this weekend for the South African leg of World Rugby’s Sevens World Series. The tournament hosts last won this event in 2015, when the tournament was first staged at Cape Town stadium.
