Eerste konsert as dirigent

Die Tygerberg-kinderkoor se jaarlikse prestige-konsert is op Saterdag 8 September in die Endlersaal op Stellenbosch gehou. Dit was die eerste konsert met Karina Erasmus as dirigent. Haar rol as dirigent behels koorafrigting, musiekkeuse, asook om ’n verhouding met die koorlede te bou sodat hulle goed kan saamwerk. In dié koorkringe is sy reeds ’n ou bekende. Erasmus het in 1999 al uitgehelp toe haar eie leerders van die Laerskool Goodwood Park vir die koor begin sing het. Sy is in 1991 as hoof van die Laerskool Goodwood Park se musiekafdeling aangestel.

The recent case being that of 19-year-old University of Cape Town student, Uyinene

Mrwetyana who went missing for a week after visiting a the Clareinch post office in Claremont to enquire about a parcel she was due to receive.

Mrwetyana was found raped and murdered in Khayelitsha a week later.

Her accused murderer has since been kept in police custody where he is awaiting trial.

Outcome of mediation awaited DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he outcome of a mediation meeting between the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) and the City of Cape Town regarding electricity tariffs, is eagerly expected this week.

The mediation meeting between the City and disgruntled customers followed a complaint lodged to Nersa by lobby group Stop COCT on behalf of 13 400 members a fortnight ago.

The meeting took place in Bellville yesterday (Tuesday 10 September).

Various issues escalated to Nersa, were deliberated on.

This includes the home user

surcharge implemented by the City; the basic charge on prepaid electricity; the relationship between the municipal bylaws and the Electricity Regulation Act and electricity distribution licence conditions that must be complied with. According to a memo from Vuyelwa Poswa, dispute resolution officer of Nersa, these issues stem from complaints and questions posed to Nersa by City customers.

“We are looking to provide more clarity and also capacitate customers on how electricity regulations work within our mandate,” she said.

In a fact-finding meeting on Monday, Stop COCT was given an opportunity to clarify issues with Nersa.

Co-founder of Stop COCT Sandra Dickson said the meeting was fruitful.

“I am hopeful that mediation procedures with the City will be successful,” she said on Monday 9 September.

Issues raised by Stop COCT in recent weeks centres around the affordability of electricity to residents of Cape Town. Should mediation fail, the legal process of arbitration will follow, according to Nersa legal adviser Mmboniseni Murathi.

Media was not allowed to attend the closed mediation meeting. At the time of print, TygerBurger was still awaiting the official outcome.

Computer lab makes learning fun THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

here was great jubilation at Wallacedene Primary School when the school launched its brand-new computer lab on Friday 6 September.

Dubbed Reading Eggs, the lab is part of non-government organisation Click Foundation’s literacy programme, which seeks to ensure that learners learn in a fun environment.

The Click Foundation deploys online English literacy programmes in under-privileged primary schools across the country.

The programmes offer young learners the opportunity to work at their own pace through fun and enjoyable activities, navigating their learning journey by means of technology.

Regional coordinator, Xoliswa Hulla said the foundation has launched the program-

me in over 68 schools across the province, many of them situated in the Winelands.

“Now we are expanding into the metro.

We have already launched in 22 schools in the metro and we are now looking to expand into the rest of the province,” she said.

Hulla said many children that start school do not make it to Grade 12 because most of them cannot read.

“Many kids cannot determine the different pronouns. They miss the questions and end up not making it through to Grade 12.”

The programme focuses on Grade 3 learners, most of whom will start Grade 4 the following year. “We concentrate mainly on the foundation phase and extend it to the next grade every year because Grade 3 learners have a transitioning problem and they struggle when they get to Grade 4.”

Hulla said she was proud of the school staff who showed enthusiasm and support in the establishment of the lab.

The school’s principal Wendy Mbude said the lab will help encourage the learners to look forward to learning.

“Technology is the best way to introduce children to take an interest in learning, I have no doubt that the learners will look forward to learning on these computers,” Mbude said.

Deputy chief education specialist for the metro east education district, Marie Engelbrecht, said ever since they (the education department) started to work with Wallacedene Primary, success has been guaranteed.

“The school met all the Click Foundation’s criteria in establishing this lab. Wallacedene Primary is one school that is leading in the systemic IsiXhosa schools. That is one of the deciding factors in choosing the school to be on the list of schools to receive the lab,” she said.

Engelbrecht had no doubt that the programme will be successful.

Men in blue support Mickey Foundation: Kraaifontein police raised funds in support of the Mickey Foundation For Autism on Friday 30 August. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and non-verbal communication. It is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. The police bought more than 30 burgers to support the foundation and autism awareness.

Drug dealer arrested Kraaifontein police had a breakthrough in dealing with the prevalence of drugs and drug-related crimes in the community. This comes after police apprehended a 20-year-old suspect for drug dealing in Wallacedene during a crime prevention operation on Wednesday 4 August.

During the operation, police officers stopped the man and conducted a body search.

“The suspect led the officers to a house where they discovered 55 sachets of tik and 186 mandrax tablets with a street value of about R10 000 inside an installed safe as well as over R2 000, which was confiscated,” police spokesperson Capt Hein Hendricks said.

The man was arrested and detained at the Kraaifontein police station.

Two injured in accident A man and a woman, both in their 30s, suffered injuries after a motor vehicle and scooter collided on Darwin Road on Friday 6 September.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, the two patients were lying on the side of the road close to the scooter, said ER24’s Russel Meiring.

“Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the woman had sustained a serious injury to one of her legs while the man had only sustained minor injuries,” he said.

After being treated for their injuries, the woman was provided with pain relief medication before they were both transported to Cape Gate Mediclinic for further treatment.

With Daniël formerly belonging to a nearby church, he is well respected and people often still seek him for spiritual guidance.

Teresa Jones, who runs the children’s care centre called Shelter of Hope, congratulated the pair on their nomination and expressed her gratitude for the work they do for her organisation, and the greater community. “These two people are my spiritual parents. When we’re having events, all we have to do is pick up the phone and tell them what we’re doing for the children and they are always willing to give – always! Whether they have to make themselves short, they never say no. We are very proud of you Pastor Hoorn and Sister Minnie.”

The three women who work with the Hoorn’s to make the food are Zelda Arendsa, Alexia Smith and Kate Phiri, who also assist the community out of the kindness of their hearts, on a volunteer basis.

School loses a ‘family member’ CARINA ROUX

S

he was part of the Kuils River Primary School family for 25 years. Sadly Zondelia Lombard-Swartz (47), who became principal in January 2017, passed away due to cancer on Sunday 8 September.

Zonnie as she was affectionately known, is survived by her husband Anthony Swartz and their daughter, Zune (16), who live in Kraaifontein.

Hildegarde McCallum, deputy principal, said Lombard-Swartz “was a dynamic, strong and visionary leader who believed in empowering others. “Her mantra was to ‘walk in faith’ and that is what she did in her life every day.”

The school’s motto is “Grow to greatness” and at the inauguration of the school’s new building in February last year, LombardSwartz said in a radio interview the staff focus on family and family values. “We say that we are ‘fired up’ to grow to greatness.

The ‘fired up’ stands for our school’s values which are Faith, Integrity, Respect, Excellence, Diligence, Unity and Pride. And that is what we strive for every day.”

McCallum said Lombard-Swartz will be remembered for living these values she promoted and tried to instil in the learners.

“She always wanted the best for her learners and staff. Her beautiful smile mirrored her warm, inviting personality.’’

In a tribute statement issued on behalf of the school’s staff, they said they will remember Lombard-Swartz as ‘‘a wonderful leader in more way than one, for her sense of humor, compassion, motivation, support, kindness and the vision she had for our school and the broader community. ‘‘She was indeed a true inspiration to us all and taught us to cherish every moment and to live life to the fullest.’’

Lombard-Swartz started as a teacher at Kuils River Primary in January 1994. She became head of department in 2008 and deputy principal in April 2013.

In January 2017 she became the second female principal at the school since its inception in 1908, on which TygerBurger reported (“Kuils River welcomes principal,” 11/01/2017).

Hendricks also gave tips for parents to safeguard their children.

He said parents should always know where their children are, what they are wearing and who they are with.

Learners take a stand against femicide Members of the Kraaifontein Youth Unite programme had a fun day on their trip.

or the past few weeks the country has been faced with attacks on women; some were not lucky enough to survive.

In a community like Kraaifontein where it has been said that abuse on women and young girls is a norm, learners from Scottsdene High School have taken a stand against these attacks.

In a video posted on Facebook on Tuesday 3 September, the Columba Leaders of the school came in solidarity to show support to all the victims.

In under 24 hours, the video clip was shared over 250 times.

Speaking to Tygerburger, creative arts teacher, Clirene Lottering said the idea to do something with the learners came after she saw posts about slain University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana on social media.

“After seeing what had happened to Uyinene, I thought that it is fitting that we do something to create awareness on abuse and femicide,” Lottering said.

She was touched by the story, mostly because these are the kinds of things that

frequently happen in the community.

“I wanted the learners to make people, especially government, aware how we have been affected by what has been happening in society and the learners were the perfect voice.

“I thought that if the learners became that voice, people will listen,” Lottering said she did not expect the post to be so wildly shared on social media in such a short space of time.

“The fact that we also have children at our school who have been through abuse, I have hopes that this post will get people speaking up against abuse.”

Principal Peter Links said when he saw the video, he felt proud of the learners for taking a stand against abuse.

“Whenever one reads the newspapers or watch the focus is always on other people, but here at our school we have learners who have been victims of abuse,” he said.

Links said these sorts of things happen frequently in the community.

“I am proud that children from this very same community have raised their voices and took a stand against abuse.”

Youth leaders treated THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Members of the Kraaifontein Youth Unite Programme had an exciting day of learning which focussed on key areas such as leadership, respect, listening and teamwork among others, during a recent trip to the Jack Muller Park in Bellville.

According to Alexis van Kervel, a Grade 8 teacher at Kraaifontein High School who organised the event, this was a way for the learners to be rewarded while having a lot of fun.

“The trip had a very positive effect on the children, they did not want to go home,” she said.

Activities that took place aimed at getting the children out of their comfort zones while focusing on the importance of teamwork and communication.

“Although group leaders were chosen, we also emphasised that we are all leaders in our own right. Many of these learners face extremely difficult challenges both at home and in the community. That is why it was

important for them to just play in a clean and safe environment while just being kids.”

Van Kervel adds the trip came just at the right time as these learners were looking forward to their next outreach programme at the Scottsdene Youth Centre, which was postponed to a later date.

“It was amazing to see how confident and ready they were while preparing for the event. They were so eager to ask their own questions, but unfortunately, to their disappointment, the outreach programme was postponed.”

Despite having a limited budget, the children enjoyed the day while indulging on delicious eats and treats.

“We had to make the best with the little resources we had. I funded the trip on my own with the help of the community. The cleaning staff at our school also made some vetkoek. They (the learners) were very appreciative.

“We welcome donations, but working with what we have also teaches the learners that you do not need much to make a difference in someone’s life.”

Chester al 37 jaar deel van my rugbylewe Ek was nie voorbereid op die skielike heengaan van Chester Williams nie, want ek ken hom al sedert 12-jarige ouderdom.

Die werklikheid moet nog insink, maar sedert ek Vrydagaand 6 September van sy afsterwe gehoor het, sukkel ek om dit te verwerk, want ek en hy het nog die vorige week gepraat oor die Dubai 7’s, wat ek sedert 2012 gereeld bywoon en dan het ons mekaar daar ontmoet.

As rugbyskrywer by Die Burger was hy en wyle Tinus Linee die eerste twee spelers oor wie ek geskryf het. Ons het mekaar by die o.13-proewe vir die WP-liga se Cravenweekspan op Avonwoodpark in Elsiesrivier ontmoet vir die onderhoud. Albei was nog onbekend en het eers begin naam maak toe hulle die o.19-proewe op dieselfde veld in 1988 as senterpaar gemaak het. Ons is almal vertroud met die opgang wat albei in rugby gemaak het totdat albei in dieselfde jaar (1993) Springbokke geword het.

Chester was die skaam een, maar Tienie het nie geskroom om my allerhande vrae te vra nie.

Ek het altyd gehoor van die gesegde dat ouers nie kinders begrawe nie, maar met Chester se afsterwe begrawe ek my tweede “rugbykind”.

Wat ek van hom sal onthou, is die glimlag wat altyd op sy gesig was, die papiertjie of hoed van jonk en oud wat hy met die einste glimlag geteken het en ook ’n geselsie aangeknoop het. Veral tydens die Dubai 7’s het hy nooit níé vir ’n foto geposeer of ’n program geteken nie. Hy het selfs tot op sy hurke gesak om sy bewonderaartjie in die oë te kan kyk. Agterna het ons dan ons geselsie voortgesit en hy was altyd verbaas dat mense hom nog onthou.

Deur die jare het ons mekaar by rugbygesellighede gekry en hy wou altyd weet hoe gaan dit met my en my twee seuns. Hy was verbaas om te hoor Gilroy werk en woon in Dubai.

Chester se werk in die gemeenskap van die Paarl is nie altyd aan die groot klok gehang nie, want hy het nie eintlik van publisiteit daaroor gehou nie. Hy wou liewer die jeug aanmoedig om by sport betrokke te wees as om af te dwaal en by sosiale euwels betrokke te raak.

Toe Tienie bedlêend was, het Chester hom nie versaak nie, maar bygestaan tot sy dood.

Vir my is Chester die verpersoonliking van die gesegde: dit is beter om te gee as te neem, want hy het ’n oop hand gehad vir diegene wat minder as hy gehad het.

Ek was die eerste een wat die scoop gekry het toe die verfilming van Invictus in Kaapstad begin is. Hy het my net laat weet, kom na die rugbyveld van die Tuine-Technikon; ons is besig om tonele hier te skiet. Ek was toe ook bevoorreg om die Hollywood-akteur Matt Damon, wat die rol van Francois Pienaar in die fliek speel, te ontmoet en my selfie te neem.

Tydens sy tyd by die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland as afrigter van die span – eers vir die Varsityskild en nou vir die Varsitybeker, kon ek hom enige tyd bel of e-pos om te vra wat hy nou doen vir ’n storie vir die koerant.

Deur die jare het hy nederig gebly, ondanks sy rugbyprestasies.

Die grootste kompliment wat ek ontvang het, was by die presidensiële geselligheid in Tuynhuys in 1995, toe Madiba my gevra het of ek sy verloofde is en Chester geantwoord het dat ek sy “rugbyma” is. Rus sag, en jy en Tienie sal altyd my eerste rugbykinders wees.

They need to be hanged It is so good to see that finally there are some young people standing up for the abuse, rape and murders of women and children.

It is high time the death penalty is brought back, and the “fat cats” need to be made aware of it. They do not want to bring it back, because they continue to protect their “ex-corrupt” and current party members.

I take my hat off to all who protested on Thursday 5 September at parliament.

The president’s answer to the petition handed to him is not good enough. They cannot just talk the talk, and not act. He cannot say, that men found guilty of rape, murder and abuse, will be sentenced to life, without parole.

No, they need to be hanged, the death penalty has to be brought back. Why must those guilty men stay in prison for life? At the taxpayers’ expense?

No, they have no place in society, nor in prison where they still get lots of privileges. If they think nothing of women and children, they do not belong here either.

Mediese personeel doen hul bes In Augustus was my pa twee keer vir bykans twee weke in die Karl Bremer-hospitaal.

Daar het hy die Sondagoggend onverwags inmekaargesak. Tuis was ek onbewus van sake. Toe ek uiteindelik na my selfoon kyk, was daar twee oproepe en stemboodskappe om die hospitaal dringend te kontak. Onderwyl ek sukkel om ’n oproep hospitaal toe te maak, stop die polisie buite en lig my man in dat ons dringend na die hospitaal moet gaan.

Daar aangekom, vind ek my pa in ’n bed in die noodeenheid. Terwyl ek daar staan, verkyk ek my aan dokters en verpleegsters wat, ondanks ’n beknopte werkarea, te min beddens, ambulanse wat kom en gaan ens. steeds hul bes doen om almal te help.

Ek kom en gaan vir besoektye en sekere gesigte raak vir my bekend. Ek besef: hier word lang skofte gewerk en baie gedoen om lewens te red. ’n Week later word hy tuis siek en gaan in ’n diabetiesekoma. Die ambulansdiens se flink optrede kry hom weer wakker.

Hulle is knap en weet presies wat om in die situasie te doen, terwyl ek paniekbevange is.

Hul kalmte maak dat hy sonder enige teëstribbeling weer per ambulans hospitaal toe vervoer kan word.

Ons familie wil ons dank betuig aan die dokters en

verpleegpersoneel van die hospitaal. Ek haal my hoed af vir hulle wat met soveel empatie en simpatie omgaan met pasiënte. Vir hulle is lewe kosbaar, en elke pasiënt belangrik.

Baie dankie ook aan die Kraaifontein-polisiediens en die staatsambulansdiens vir hul hulp.

Manne en vroue in uniform, julle speel ’n baie belangrike rol in hulpverlening aan die gemeenskap. U diens word waardeer.

Why not employ more firefighters?

Regarding the firefighting crisis (“Firefighting crisis may lurk”, TygerBurger 4 September): My son matriculated more than 10 years ago and he really wanted to join the firefighting team.

He told me, “daddy I want to become a firefighter” and he did everything required from him in order to apply for this job.

Sadly, after so many attempts and applications he could not get in, for no reason.

Now here’s a solution to the problem. Why let these guys work so many hours overtime when a quarter of the country’s youth are unemployed with a matric certificate?

Why not employ more firefighters?

What do you get out of tired, frustrated staff?

Ricardo a true guardian angel I refer to the letter of the elderly couple who had car problems where the steam was coming out of there bonnet and a guardian angel appeared out of nowhere (“Ricardo is our guardian angel”, TygerBurger 4 September).

I had the same problem recently and a guy stopped also with a bottle of water and his name was Ricardo. I can recall him mentioning he lives in Summer Greens. He gave me his card as he also does catering. I lost the card but I am so sure it was the same person. He was my hero on that day and his act of kindness I will never forget.

arl Bester, die gevalle oudspeurder wat lesers in Rudie van Rensburg van Welgemoed se debuutroman Slagyster ontmoet het, maak ná ’n dekade weer sy verskyning in Van Rensburg se nuutste spanningsroman Vloek.

Frans Swart se produksie Gé Sing: Hoor my lied! is te sien in die Grand Arena by GrandWest op Saterdag 28 September.

Kunstenaars soos André Schwartz, Louis Loock, Arina de Witt, Jannie Moolman en Tasché Burger, wenner van vanjaar The Voice, sal met die ondersteuning van ’n volledige orkes hulde bring aan Gé met ’n vars interpretasie van sy werk. ’n Vertoning op ’n groot skerm sal hoog-

tepunte uit Gé se lewe as kunstenaar, pa en man wys.

show,” sê Rothman.

Karlien van Jaarsveld gaan ook twee van haar nuwe liedjies sings. Majozi gaan fokus op bekende liedjies waarmee die gehoor kan saamsing. Dit sal Arno Carstens se eerste optrede by Liefde by die dam wees.

Liefde Wen samel ná afloop van die konsert komberse in vir minderbevoorregtes.

Pierre Greeff van Die Heuwels Fantasties en een van die organiseerders, sê: “Ons help graag ander; bring jou kombers en los dit na die konsert agter. Liefde Wen sal seker maak dit kry die regte huis.”

Greeff sê Meerendal is die ideale venue vir die Kaapse konsert. “Vanjaar sal daar meer ruimte wees vir konsertgangers en daar sal ook meer kroegfasiliteite wees.”

He shares the stage with Charl du Plessis (piano), Juan Oosthuizen (guitar), Werner Spies (bass) and Peter Auret (drums).

Beethoven’s work performed The UCT South Africa College of Music orchestra along with the Symphony Choir of Cape Town, will be performing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at the Sarah Baartman Hall at UCT on Tuesday 15 October at 19:30.

Beethoven spent about four years composing the work when he was at his peak and invested much of himself in it.

He apparently undertook an intensive study of religious music of the past, from monastic chants to Handel’s Messiah (he incorporated the melody of “And He Shall Reign” into his “Dona nobis pacem”) and

of Mozart’s Requiem.

From the meditative “Kyrie” to the ecstatic “Gloria”, through the “Credo” to the softly personal “Sanctus”, which evolves into a rousing “Benedictus”, and finally the theatrical “Agnus Dei”, a full orchestra and choir will sweep the audience through a panoply of emotions. The composer himself wrote the words, “From the heart – may it return to the heart” on the manuscript. The conductor will be Alexander Fokkens.

Tekkies klap by wedloop Die jaarlikse Medihelp Tekkie Challenge-wedlope het Saterdag 7 September by die Jan Krielskool plaasgevind. Buiten die “Battle of the sexes” oor 10 km, waarin die vroue voor die mans wegspring, was daar vanjaar ook ’n halfmarathon (21,1 km). Die 5 km-pretloop was gewild onder gesinne en vriende wat dit rustiger wou vat.

Tygerbergstreek se rugby storm voort SAREL BURGER

M

et die afhandeling van die laaste sarsie Superliga-klubrugbywedstryde die afgelope naweek in die WP is die kragtige bydrae van die Tygerbergstreek tot die Kapenaars se klubrugby opnuut bevestig.

In die topafdeling is vyf van die agt voorste spanne in die WP in die Tygerbergstreek gesetel. In die B-afdeling van die Superliga is Kuilsrivier (tweede) en Bellville (derde) netnet deur Hamlets van die wennerstrofee weerhou. In afdeling C is Kraaifontein se Hands & Heart as die kampioen gekroon, met Scottsdene (Kraaifontein) wat derde op die finale punteleer geëindig het.

Durbanville-Bellville was die Tygerbergse klub wat hierdie seisoen die beste gevaar het van die nie-universitêre klubs deur derde te eindig (ná die Maties en Ikeys).

Met die Durbies se nederlaag van 33-42 (vyf drieë teenoor ses drieë) Saterdag teen

die Maties – wat hulle ’n bonuspunt besorg het – het Durbell voor Valsbaai (vierde) ingeskuif op die punteleer.

Unie-Milnerton en Universitet van WesKaapland het ook vir die topses-kompetisie om die Presidentbeker hierdie maand gekwalifiseer, terwyl Brackenfell en Tygerberg-klub onderskeidelik sewende en agtste op die punteleer klaargemaak het.

Kuilsrivier, wat in die 2020-seisoen saam met Hamlets sal opskuif na die topafdeling, het kort op die hakke van die Mamre-klub in afdeling B geëindig, ondanks sy jongste oorwinning van 42-27 oor Goodwood.

Hands & Heart het bevestiging van sy wennerstrofee in afdeling C gegee deur Raithby Universals die afgelope naweek ’n loesing van 55-12 te gee. Maar Scottsdene moet gediend wees met die derde plek (ná Strand) ná hy 27-29 teen die einste Strand vasgeval het. Ook Kraaifontein-klub (24-40 t Kylemore) en Elsiesrivier (29-58 t Strand United) het Saterdag die tweedebeste daarvan afgekom.

Die WP-netbalkampioene is ...

Die Hoërskool Durbanville se eerste netbalspan het Saterdag in Bellville ’n haas uit die hoed gepluk en, dalk ietwat onverwags, vir Stellenberg in die eindstryd van die Kaapstad-Hoërskole-netbalunie se o.19A-superligakompetisie geklop.

In die onlangse interskole-kragmeting tussen hierdie twee buurskole was Stellenberg se o.19A-span bobaas, maar die Durbies het met die afgelope naweek se sege van 28-24 gesorg dat hulle vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar die WP-skolekampioen is.

In die uitspeelwedstryd om die bronsmedalje het die Hoërskool Bellville die span van Brackenfell met 32-24 koudgesit.

Dit was egter grotendeels ’n triomfdag vir Durbanville. Behalwe die o.19A-trofee het HS Durbanville ook die louere weggedra in die o.14A-liga, met Stellenberg tweede en D.F. Malan derde. Stellenberg was op sy beurt die kampioen in die o.17A-, o.16A- en o.15A-ligas, met HS Durbanville tweede in die o.17A- en o.16A-ligas. Brackenfell was tweede in die o.15A-liga. – Sarel Burger

Kampioene in gholf: Die Hoërskool D.F. Malan se tweede gholfspan het aan die Westelike Provinsie se C-liga-eindstryd by die Milnerton-gholfbaan deelgeneem en vir die tweede opeenvolgende jaar in die eindstryd teen ’n baie sterk King David Mowbray-onwikkelingspan van die suidelike voorstede te staan gekom. D.F. Malan is aangewys as die kampioen van die C-liga met ’n wentelling van 128 teenoor 125. Hier is (voor van links) Wihan Gaybba, Zacko Greeff en Helgard Rautenbach. Agter is André Olivier, André May en Henry Bothwell.

Golf day for accident victims to be held Simpsons Attorneys in Bellville is passionate about assisting victims of road accidents, and for this purpose, have chosen Goukam Health as the sole beneficiary for their upcoming golf day on 20 September at the Bellville Golf Club.

Goukam Health is a community programme that facilitates the reintegration of children and adults with disabilities into their respective societies. The creation of the pro-

gramme is aimed at providing for survivors of road accidents who have sustained brain injuries.

Die span was onoorwonne in 11 wedstryde en het op sy wenpad 38 doele aangeteken en 9 doele afgestaan. Paulene de Bruin (afrigter) en Santjie Harris (bestuurder) het na die span omgesien. Cara Timms, Mire de Jongh, Kayla van Loggerenberg en Victoire Davids wat almal in graad 12 is, het hul laaste wedstryd vir Stellies gespeel. De Jongh en Van Loggerenberg het ’n besonderse mylpaal behaal deur beide meer as 100 wedstryde vir hul skool se eerste span te speel. ‘Ball’ players join hands against femicide EARL HAUPT AND NOORE NACERODIEN Players, coaches, administrators, umpires and other members of both the Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) and the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) joined hands in their protest against femicide during peak traffic on the Kromboom Road bridge crossing (M5) on Friday 6 September.

Passing motorists gave their approval with continuous blaring of the hooters, extending the outpouring. “A sharp increase in recent cases of femicide has pushed South

African women to the brink. Protestors took to the streets of Cape Town to show their support for women and children and the atrocities they are subjected to. Our human right to be protected in society has been grossly neglected with the increase in crime,” says CTBF public relations officer, Diedré Marquard.

She adds that both the CTBF and CTSA are united in supporting the cause, because #enoughisenough.“We stood in solidarity in protest receiving support from all cars hooting as they passed by. As sporting federa-

tions, we continue to support this cause and pray for justice to be served on all those who disrespect the lives of others,” she adds.

Meanwhile, newly-elected CTSA chair Hayley Carolus was grateful for the turnout experienced at Friday’s demonstration.

“The executive committee wants to thank all members for joining us on Friday. It was stepping stone towards our end goal of creating awareness around gender-based violence. Enough is enough; we need to stand together for all those who are suffering,” she said.

Lorene Beukes, vice-president of CTBF’s administration hopes that the spirit of unification between the two sporting administrative bodies continues.

“It’s something we had to do and have to do. The turnout was awesome; enough to make a point. Thank you to softball, and to all the ladies who were there, because it is really important.

“This is the first time we’ve joined for anything. I hope that the next time we join is for a happier occasion and that our relationship keeps going and gets stronger.”

WOMEN’S RUGBY: THIRD WIN FOR TEAM

estern Province (WP) claimed a third consecutive South African Rugby women’s interprovincial A-section title in searing heat at City Park on Saturday 7 September, beating Border 38-32 in a dramatic final.

The Capetonians had to fight back three times during the match to stay in contention after a strong start by Border, which saw the visitors lead 17-10 at the break. Both sides scored six tries, but two in quick succession late in the second half proved decisive for the champions.

Star winger, Kimico Manuel dotted down in the opening minutes to hand WP an early lead, but a converted try by Border had them back in the lead five minutes later.

Border scored their second try with centre, Mophy Ngwevu, finishing off some good work by the forwards.

It was Manual who again ghosted past several Border defenders to score her team’s second try. Border scored their third try of the first half with Nosi Gada benefitting.

The second half was equally entertaining.

The home side drew level thanks to a Vuyo Maqholo try after a strong break by centre Shaunique Hess.

Border took the lead again though Akhona Dotwana. That 22-17 lead was soon overturned by a converted try from WP, before Border again took the lead with a try.

But the WP defence held out in the last frantic minutes to claim glory.

Die koste is R2 500 per vierbal, wat middag- en aandete insluit. Maatskappye word aangemoedig om deel te word van die dag en kan putjies koop om hul produkte te vertoon.

Spelers moet die Kuilsrivier-gholfklub skakel by 021 903 0222 indien hulle gholfkarretjies wil bespreek.

Twee gratis vierballe is op die spel, waarvan een vir juniors en een vir vroue is. Enige vier juniors (nie ouer as 18 jaar nie) kan ’n e-pos stuur en motiveer hoekom hulle die wenner van die gratis vierbal moet wees.

Dieselfde geld vir die vrouespan van enige ouderdom.
