Toll plan put on hold
If the City of Cape Town gets their way to have Sanral’s project regarding toll roads on the N1 and N2 in Cape Town canned, motorists will hopefully be able to avoid stopping at another toll plaza en route to a holiday destination. Plans to toll highways in the Western Cape have been placed on hold, according to deputy transport minister Jeremy Cronin. He reasoned that they do not see it as a priority in tolling the N1 and N2 in Cape Town, SAPA reported. However mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Brett Herron, says
there is still uncertainty surrounding the statement. “We don’t know whether it is temporarily (placed on hold) or cancelled. prevailed with a realisation that roads can be financed through more efficient means, as has been done for decades in the past.” Herron, says the matter will be in court in as soon as six months. “When we declared an inter-governmental dispute on the matter earlier this year, the city committed itself to resolving this issue through all available channels and in the best interests of all parties,” said Herron. . process takes its course. Wayne Duvenage, chairperson of the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, recently welcomed the decision to shelve tolling plans for the urban routes within the Western Cape for the time being. “Clearly the pressure and uproar around the tolling of Gauteng’s freeways has been a catalyst to this decision, along with the uproar from the Cape Town residents themselves. “Possibly, some sanity has also
