council will soon enter into discussions with Cape Town-based business incubator company Bandwith Barn (BWB), on how it could assist entrepreneurs in this field.

A business incubator is exactly what the word implies – a place where a young business or even an idea can be “hatched”, to grow and flourish.

BWB is a fully networked busi-

ness incubator serving the ICT industry in South Africa, and has recently received a grant from the World Bank to roll out an incubator manager training programme throughout the continent. The company was launched in 2000, but entered into a partnership with the City of Cape Town in 2006.

It is funded among others by Telkom and the provincial govern-

ment of the Western Cape.

“It is important for entrepreneurs in this sector to know that they are not alone. We provide the support and guidance in several programmes to help them succeed and grow in the industry,” says Chris Vermeulen from BWB. “If you are still working for a company but have a trailblazing idea and want to start a company,

or you have a young business, or wish to introduce a revolutionary new product or service, we can help you to accelerate.”

The aforesaid programmes are designed to firstly study the feasibility of an idea or product, and then to help the entrepreneur to build on it by providing the required business support. . To page 2.

‘Rapist’ can be rehabilitated DESIREÉ RORKE

“All sinners fall short of the glory of God. This man has never shifted the blame ... He is remorseful and I believe he can be successfully rehabilitated,” said pastoral counsellor Michael Eihmig, at the last sentencing hearing of the Brackenfell man accused of raping his two underage daughters and friends last year.

According to Eihmig, who has been a counsellor for three years, the accused is a sex addict, a condition similar to alcoholism, and should be treated as such.

Eihmig was of the opinion that the psychological treatment the accused received before his arrest in May 2011, (and before the last assault), was not effective as it treated only the symptoms of the problem. Eihmig felt that he, in his capacity as a pastoral counsellor would be able to identify the core problem and treat it.

He furthermore witnessed that the ac-

cused was sexually and physically abused by his grandfather between the ages of eight and nine, and that this trauma triggered the crimes he is standing trial for.

He stands accused of over 400 counts of among others sexual assault, rape and being in possession of explicit child pornography produced by himself.

“Because he suffered emotional trauma and did not get the right treatment at the time, he became an offender. In many cases victims of sexual offences becomes sexual offenders,” he said.

Eihmig also said the accused suffered many blows in personal relationships with the women later in his life, including his wife, it could have compounded his problem.

Another postponement was requested and granted for 12 June, in the Blue Downs Regional Court yesterday for a psychological report to be submited, but Magistrate Johan Beyers said this would be the last postponement.

’n 52-jarige man is Maandagoggend by sy huis in Brackenfell in hegtenis geneem vir die moord op ’n plaaslike onderwyser, Sulene de Klerk (51). Volgens ’n TygerBurger-bron was die verdagte glo aan die oorledene bekend.

Ná ’n ondersoek van net twee weke is die man Maandagoggend om 08:50 deur die polisie se taktiese reaksie-eenheid vasgetrek.

De Klerk, wat vir 15 jaar aan die Laerskool Brackenfell verbonde was, is op 6 April om omstreeks 17:30 deur ’n vriend in haar huis in Waterlandstraat in Sonkring dood aangetref. Daar was ’n sny onder haar regterknie en ’n wond aan die agterkant van haar kop.

Sheer determination paid off for Nosipho Sheila Mdini, a 42-year-old domestic worker from Boston, when she received her National Diploma in Human Resource Management last week.

“Since I was little, I told myself I wanted to be a graduate,” says Sheila. This dream had to be put on hold when she fell pregnant in 1987, at the age of 17. As she had a child to bring up, Sheila could not complete matric, but the dream persisted.

In 2004 Sheila completed a computer course and in the following year, she registered as a part-time student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

This go-getter paid for her studies with her salary and when she received her diploma last week, her studies were paid in full.

“It wasn’t easy,” Sheila says. “After I completed the second year, I wanted to quit, because it was too much for me.” Sheila had five subjects in her first year and four in the second year and with a full-time job, she merely didn’t have enough time to juggle everything.

Sheila persisted, however. Mondays to Thursdays she went to class between 17:20 and 19:20 and still had to find the time to study for tests and exams, but she managed it. Despite being busy between work and studies, Sheila made time for love too and in 2007 she married Mxolisi Dala.

During exams though, she took time off to study.

Sheila Mdini Her employer of the past 12 years, Carin Human, is very proud of Sheila. “She is a real inspiration,” she says.

Sheila’s only daughter, Philiswa (21) is repeating Grade 12 this year, to obtain a better result for university exemption. “My daughter says I am an encouragement,” says Sheila.

Although she cannot wait to work in her field, Sheila’s set on doing it right. “I do want to work in human resources, but I will only leave my current job once I have found another position,” she says.

Meyer is na bewering deur twee mans saam met hom in aanhouding doodgeslaan en -geskop kort nadat hy deur onbekende mense in Renbaanweg in Durbanville gevind is waar hy glo besope in die pad gelê het. Die mense het hom by die Durbanvillepolisiekantoor afgelaai, het die polisie se mediawoordvoerder, kapt. Frederick van Wyk, gesê.

Hy het vroeër die aand by die Stones-kroeg by die Palmgrove-sentrum in Durbanville gekuier.

Die polisie het hom by die polisiekantoor gekry en in hegtenis geneem op ’n klag van openbare dronkenskap. Hy is saam met agt ander dronk mans in ’n sel toegesluit.

Twee van die mans het hom na bewering begin skop en slaan, waarna hy skaars ’n halfuur nadat hy in die selle gegooi is, aan sy beserings beswyk het. ’n Ambulans is glo ontbied, maar hy is met die ambulans se aankoms dood verklaar.

Volgens sy verloofde, Sylvia Hamman (45), het sy hom die oggend laas gesien toe hy op pad werk toe was. Hy was ’n klerk in die vragkantoor van die Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens.

“Hy was ’n baie rustige mens, maar jy moes hom nie onnodig kwaad maak nie,” het sy gesê. Sy het hom drie jaar gelede ontmoet en hulle het so pas oor Paasnaweek verloof geraak. Hulle sou in September trou. “Ons het ná ons ontmoet het, saam vir rehabilitasie gegaan en daar was daarna geen probleme verder nie,” het sy gesê.

“Ek weet nie hoekom hy weer gaan drink het nie en wat in sy kop gebroei het nie,” het sy gesê.

Sy motor is by die parkeerterrein by Stones gevind. Dit was nie gesluit nie.

Sy het gesê die polisie het aan haar ’n verklaring voorgelees van die mense wat hom opgetel het . Volgens familie ontken die polisie egter nou dat só ’n verklaring afgelê is.

Hulle het saam gebly by haar huis in Hildebrandstraat in Bellville, vanwaar sy ook ’n dagsorgsentrum, Voetspoortjies-dagsorg, bedryf. Volgens die eienaar van die Stoneskroeg, wat anoniem wou bly, het Meyer die

“If you let it go and it comes back, it’s meant to be yours.”

It’s a saying a Northpine resident can vouch for – his African grey parrot known as Nelson often flies away for a few days only to come back to his warm and cosy home.

The African grey parrot is regarded as one of the most intelligent birds and they feed primarily on palm nuts, seeds, fruits and leafy matter.

“It all started two years ago when I first opened his cage,” says Colin Adams, Nelson’s owner.

“Nelson came out and spread his wings a little bit, but then he just took off. I was so angry at myself for allowing him to come out of the cage. I gave up all hope and thought that I would have to make peace that Nelson was gone forever.”

But after three days Adams heard a sound and when he looked, it was Nelson who returned home.

“Three months later I decided to see what would happen if I let him out of his cage again. He flew away, only to return three days later. It was amazing that he left and always came back. Every three months I let him go and spread his wings.”

Nelson the African grey parrot who keeps re­ turning home after stretching his wings and flying off into the sunset.

He says he wanted to let people know that “if you give your pets a good home, they will always come back to you”.

Anton Odendal, a psychologist at Birdlife South Africa, says it is amazing that a parrot would come back.

“In all my years I have never ever heard of an African grey parrot who returns back home. Many leave their homes and just disappear, or they are captured and then returned, but never have I heard of one who comes back on his own.”

Want sien, die groen plakker wys jy is ve-e-e-e-e-r onderaan die lys van belangrikheid, so ver ondertoe dat jy tot vier uur kan wag voor iemand wat iets van die mediese wetenskap weet, jou vra waarvoor jy allergies is.

Die ontvangspersoon en vorm-intikker wat die eerste stop by noodgevalle is, is nie een van dié kenners nie.

Sy probeer belangstel terwyl sy luister na jou pyn, koors en ongerief en besluit daarvolgens of jy ’n rooi, oranje, geel of groen sticker kry.

Rooi sê die mens is tegnies dood. ’n Rooi sticker laat jou direk deurgaan na ’n kamertjie waar hulle probeer om die garingdraadjie waaraan jou lewe hang, in ’n staaldraad te verander.

Oranje sê jy kan tegnies nog gered word. Met ’n oranje sticker het jy ’n lisensie om binne tien minute gehelp te word.

Van geel af begin die belangstelling in jou mediese ongemak taan. Met ’n geel toestand van ongesteldheid, kan jy tot ’n uur wag, sê die plakkaat. Wat sal dit nou insluit? ’n Gebreekte been wat deur die vel steek, maar darem nie ook ’n aar afgesteek het nie? Hartkrampe, maar darem nie ’n fullblown hartaanval nie? Die vrou is in kraam, maar die baba sal darem nie binne, wel, ’n uur te voorskyn kom nie? Die mes sit nog in die wond vas, so die man sal darem nie doodbloei nie?

Die antwoorde sal my seker bly ontwyk.

Hoekom sal iemand op ’n Dinsdagmiddag

by NOODgevalle aanmeld as hulle dink dis nie ’n noodgeval nie? Sal jy nie andersins eerder na jou huisdokter toe gaan nie? Daar sal

jy sekerlik binne vier ure gehelp word, dan nie?

Dit behoort duidelik te wees dat my dogtertjie se toestand Dinsdagmiddag in die groen kategorie was. Al die geel en oranje wat oral uit haar lyf gekom het, en die rooi wange van die 40 grade-koors, het niks gedoen om die gespesifiseerde wagtyd te verkort nie.

Links van my het ’n vrou gesit wat baie gesond lyk, maar soveel pyn in haar rug gehad het dat sy nie kon beweeg nie. ’n Vriend het haar daar kom sitmaak, en nou is sy op haar eie – vir by die vier uur lank. Regs van my het ’n ander vrou maar kwaai bleek en beroerd gelyk en al dieper in die regop stoel ingesak. Ook op die groen vlak. Haar vriendin wou die tyd met koffie verkort. Die masjien was stukkend. Die watervlak van die filtreerder sou ons nie tot sesuur deursien nie.

Hulle was seker bang my kind gooi in die wagkamer op, want nadat ek haar hele geskiedenis, wat op twee jaar gelukkig nog besonder kort is, moes gee, kry sy darem iets om die koors te breek.

Terug wagkamer toe. Net as jy dink jy’s volgende om geroep te word, word ’n hartaanval van buite af deurgestoot. Mmm, dis seker oranje. Of ’n loeiende ambulans stop met skreeuende bande drie meter van jou af en ’n mens met ’n suurstofmasker word deur swaaiende deure verbygestoot. Die oë is nog helder oop. Nee wat, so by geel rond. Maar dis steeds nie ’n groen nie.

Ons wagtendes was eenvoudig nie siek genoeg om binne vier ure aandag te kry nie.

“Jy kom mors eintlik ons tyd,” sê die sticker.

“Jy het ’n groen plakker, groen vir “Go home!”

A workshop on drugs and substance abuse will be presented by the South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Sanca) on 21, 24 and 25 May from 09:00 to 16:00 at the Bellville Library in Bellville.

The cost of the workshop is R500.

The purpose of the workshop is to give the public in-depth information on the various forms of abuse, how to recognise the

symptoms and to understand the effects it has on people.

‘Patience, it will be worth the hassle’ “While the ground works for the new housing development have started in and around Scottsdene, residents will be experiencing some inconvenience for the next few months,”said Cllr Grant Twigg at last week’s subcouncil meeting.

“This is as a result of new roads and maintenance to other roads that is in progress and we will appreciate the patience of the community in this regard.”

According to Twigg this phase of work will take approximately another three months but that it will be a long-term solution when done.

“We desperately needed this road infrastructure and when complete it will solve a lot of the current traffic flow problems in the area,” he said. The intersection at Eoan road will boast a new traffic circle.

Quick action leads to arrest The quick thinking of a Kraaifontein homeowner led to the apprehension of a suspected burglar, following an attempted break-in at a house in Belmont Park last Friday.

At around 11:50 that morning, ADT Security armed response officer Johannes Philander was patrolling in Van der Bijl Street when he was flagged down by the visiblyshaken woman who told him that she had just interrupted someone trying to break in to her house. After speaking with the homeowner and advising her to return indoors, Philander began making his way around the

area looking for the suspect.

In Fourth Avenue Philander spotted two men, one of whom fitted the description he was given. The officer made his way to the opposite end of the street where he waited for them and apprehended the suspected burglar who was handed over to the South African Police Service for arrest.

In the wake of this incident, Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security Western Cape says experiencing someone trying to gain entry or break into your home while you are present is traumatic.

“As soon as your suspicions are roused, it is imperative that you contact the South Af-

rican Police Service or your security company. Try to provide them with as much detail as you can, including what the suspect was wearing and anything else you may remember as this could help officials in their efforts to apprehend them.”

If confronted by an intruder in your home: . Try to escape if possible and lock yourself in a secure room. . Do not hinder or try to apprehend a burglar if they want to leave. . Do not follow the suspect outside. Rather close and lock the door immediately before calling for help or activating your home alarm system.

Now thieves targeting locks ESMÉ ERASMUS

First the manholes, now the brass padlocks are popular among thieves. This is due to the high monetary value of brass and copper.

Dr Les Rencontre, director of electricity services of the City of Cape Town, said because of the theft of the padlocks, the city has received numerous complaints of open electricity kiosks.

He responded to a complaint by a Durbanville resident, James Black, who found an open electrical kiosk outside his house on the corner of Paul Kruger and Hibiscus streets.

Although the city locked the box after he complained, he said it is not the first time boxes have been left unlocked.

“I want someone to sit up and do something to make sure nothing like this is repeated. Can you imagine what would happen if a child played there?” he asked.

According to Rencontre the “department is in the process of replacing brass padlocks with nylon padlocks”.

This is the state in which a resident found an electrical box outside his house in Hibiscus Street in Durbanville recently.

City must provide ‘requested’ sports DESIREÉ RORKE

The City of Cape Town must focus more on what communities want in terms of sport and recreation facilities, before allocating the funds for such.

So says Cllr Grant Twigg, chairman of the Bergdal Subcouncil and DA caucus leader in the city.

According to Twigg many sporting facilities have been built in the past, but today stand unused and derelict, because the community in question did not want it from the outset.

One such example is the cricket facilities in Wallacedene, which stand neglected and unused, years after being built.

“We have to consult with the community and ask the people what they want before we build it. It does not make sense to build a swimming pool in Bloekombos where the community have on previous occasions made it very clear that they don’t want a swimming pool. Rather build them a facility that they expressly want and will use,” he said.

It was this very swimming pool issue that resulted in Twigg being quoted out of context in the Cape Times on 12 April.

In this report “Two Grants to slug it out at DA’s ‘Mangaung’”, the reporter stated: “Twigg is understood to have shocked some

party members when he said at a recent discussion on recreational facilities in the city that developments should be built in coloured areas rather than black areas.”

According to Twigg, who is also a member of the city’s sport and recreation committee, this is not the case at all.

“A recent research study commissioned by the city to determine the sport and recreation needs of the city shows that the city does not sufficiently consult with the citizens before providing facilities,” he said.

In this recreation study compiled by research company Mthente, it is stated that community members prefer sporting disciplines such as soccer, netball, dancing and hockey above swimming.

On a chart in the report, soccer is listed with a 62 percent interest, whereas swimming is listed with a 4,1 percent interest.

“In the meeting referred to in the Cape Times article I referred to the research study and pointed out the fact that the community of Bloekombos didn’t want a swimming pool, and should be provided with what they want and need,” he said last week.

Discussions around how grants will be utilised in providing sporting facilities, started on Friday and are currently under way. “... we will also discuss what other facilities are needed across the city. This will include a few swimming pools, but mostly synthetic soccer and hockey pitches,” he said.

This number – 0800 872 201 – according to Cornelia Finch, district head of the City of Cape Town’s social development sector, was rolled out as part of the Give Responsibly campaign.

This campaign, launched last month, aims to discourage members of the community from giving irresponsibly.

According to Finch the call centre will be manned by four dedicated staff members, and she advises the public to phone the call centre, instead of the police or ward councillor, in cases involving street people.

Cape’s high teen pregnancy rings alarm DESIREÉ RORKE

Break the sex network and stop the cycle.

This was the core message at the youth conference of the Metro East Education District, hosted at Scottsdene High School on Saturday.

The high rate of teenage pregnancies in the area is perpetuating a cycle of socio-economic circumstances, which in turn could lead to other social ills.

The statistics are frightening.

According to Western Cape social services, in Scottsdene and Scottsville high schools alone, 40 teenage pregnancies occurred during 2011.

Moreover, statistics in South Africa show that one out of every three girls will have a baby by the age of 20. One out of every 10 teens will contract a sexually transmitted disease, as 95 percent of teenagers don’t use protection.

Anita Louw from the non-governmental organisation Choices, says four out of 10 condoms aren’t effective, with dismal consequences.

“Since abortions were legalised in South Africa in 1997, one million legal abortions have been performed, deduced to be roughly two legal abortions daily in the Western Cape,” she says.

In addition, the emotional consequences that go along with teen pregnancy, abortion or adoption leaves a scar for life.

“There is no condom for your heart. Nothing that can protect you against the heartache you will go through.”

According to Louw, it is likely that the child of the teenage mother would also one day become a teenage mom, but that this cycle can be broken by making the right choices.

“We are not animals. Yes, we all have a normal sex drive but we can say no, We can wait, and break the sex network.”

Lee-Anne Felix, who became pregnant in her final school year at the age of 17, also shared her story with the youth.

“I didn’t have the guts to tell my parents and I kept it between me and my boyfriend for six months. It was a terrible experience. I was fearful and worried that I would not be able to finish matric and would be a single mother with-

out an education. Everyone was disappointed in me, and I was disappointed in myself.”

Lee-Ann, with the support of her school, friends and family, kept her baby, finished matric, furthered herself in her chosen career and is happily married today with three children. Her message to the youth was: “Use your failures as stepping stones to success.”

Badisa moes noodgewonge van sy projekte kanselleer (waaronder die No Limits-program vir straatkinders) en die Suid-Afrikaanse Jeugkoor staar sluiting in die gesig.

Die aankondiging is ook pas gemaak dat die Varingfees, wat die afgelope agt jaar in Brackenfell aangebied is, nie vanjaar gaan plaasvind nie weens ’n gebrek aan geld.

Die sogenaamde “groot” maatskappye, wat in die verlede verdienstelike projekte en organisasies ondersteun het, het doodeenvoudig nie meer geld om mee te “speel” nie.

Die ekonomie knyp en dit word orals gevoel. En soos die geld minder raak, so raak die nood al groter.

Wat kan die middelklas-mens-op-straat doen om die nood te help verlig? Eerstens help dit nie om met oogklappe deur die lewe te gaan en te dink die probleem sal weggaan as ’n mens dit ignoreer nie.

En ja, die sêding “charity begins at home” is inderdaad waar. Maar as ’n mens nog duur speelgoed kan bekostig en gereeld kan uiteet, kan ’n mens maar gerus die beursie oopmaak en help om iemand anders se nood te verlig. Dan kan ’n mens met trots sê dat jy ’n waardevolle bydrae tot die samelewing lewer.

Darting my cat was a disgraceful act I live in Protea Village and I woke up over the weekend to find my black and white cat sleeping in its usual place and then noticed something like little fluffy pods sticking to its fur.

On closer inspection however I was shocked to discover that they were in fact small pigmy darts of the kind fired through a thin tube placed in the mouth.

There were a number of these little darts and I literally had to pull at them to get them out of the cat’s skin.

On my way to the kitchen I found more of these little darts laying about the house.

The cat must have pulled these out by itself.

Some had broken off and left the tips stuck under the skin.

I have no idea who would want to abuse an animal like this, but I would like to point out to him or her that the abuse of animals is a criminal offence.

Chances are that this was done by children as I can’t see any adult in his or her right

mind doing something like this.

I would just like to appeal to all parents to please educate their children about this sort of thing, even if you think that your child would never do something like this.

Of course, there also exists the possibility that this was done by an adult.

If my cat has entered your property and you do not approve, that is to be respected.

However, shooting it with darts is not justified.

I mean, what would have happened if the dart had hit the poor cat in the eye?

Would it be okay for the cat to go blind in one eye just because some kids were having fun or because the cat intruded on somebody else’s property and they felt that it deserved to be darted?

Nobody wants to see their pets mistreated like this and quite frankly, it is disgraceful that we still have people in our communities who does this sort of thing.

Not enough cop cars, then?

We often hear that the police do not have enough vehicle resources to get to everything.

Interesting because I’ve been visiting my friend in Kraaifontein Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on all three days two police vans were standing in two yards opposite each other near The Palms. This is now in the evening and right throughout the day. So maybe the officers are off but surely these vans should be at their stations? Would love to hear what the explanation for this is.

WO Erica Crous, Brackenfell police spokesperson, responds: The Brackenfell police urge residents to report such incidents as above but to please provide the specific police station the car is from, (and registration number), which will be indicated on the side of the car.

Police members from across the peninsula live in the area and it would be easier to investigate such matters if they can determine where the vehicle is from.

In certain cases officers have authorisation to take a vehicle home in case they need it early the next morning.

Ek persoonlik ry in die oggende op die N1 en in Voortrekkerweg tussen Parow en Kuilsrivier, en moes al bo-op die sypaadjie ry om my voertuig so gou doenlik uit die pad van aankomede verkeersmotors te kry. Dit is ligte en sirenes wat padverbruikers dwing om uit die pad te kom en sommiges ry oor ’n rooi verkeerslig of gaan staan in die middel van die kruising om ruimte te maak, wat tot nog ’n ongeluk kan lei. Alle motoriste probeer om ten alle koste ryvoorrang aan hulle te verleen, maar soms teen ’n prys.

Ek het ook al ’n geval of twee beleef waar drie tot vier verkeersmotors na dieselfde ongelukstoneel jaag net om uit te vind dat daar reeds ’n verkeersvoertuig en ambulans teenwoordig is.

Is die voertuie dan nie met radio’s in verbinding nie? Of kan daardie verkeersbeamptes dan nie liewer verkeersligte en kruisings beheer nie?

Die verkeersvoertuie word letterlik tot op die ongelukstoneel tot stilstand gebring en ’n swak poging word aangewend om die verkeer te beheer. Die gevolg is ’n opeenhoping van verkeer by die ongelukstoneel. Sommige verkeersbeamptes staan rond en praat met mekaar, min gepla met motoriste.

Vra jy of hulle nie kan hulp verleen met die verkeer nie, word daar vir jou gesê: “Ry, moenie probleme veroorsaak nie”.

Steel trolliestoters?

Ek verwys na TygerBurger van 18 April, die foto van die trolliestoters met die matras op die trollie (“One man’s trash, another’s bed”).

Ek hou die tendens al ’n geruime tyd dop en ek wonder of dit regtig weggooigoed is en of dit gesteelde goed is. Sover ek weet sal geen vullislorrie ’n matras wegneem nie. Die rooi plastiekhouer lyk ook in ’n baie goeie toestand. Dit is ’n merkwaardige inisiatief van die trolliestoters, steel ’n trollie vol goed op vullisdag by enige huis in die straat en word nog daaroor bejammer ook.

Pasop, hulle steel ons rot en kaal!

Help Little Fighters fight cancer REYANA STEYN

Fighting for children who have been diagnosed with cancer – this is why the Little Fighter Cancer Trust was formed.

The trust, which gives relief to cancer babies and their families, has been selected as one of the beneficiaries for the ’Cause We Can!/ Want Ons Kan! charity concert featuring some of the top names in the

The amazing concert is set to take place on Sunday 29 July and will showcase artists such as Laurika Rauch, Andriëtte Norman, Alan Committie, Zanne Stapelberg, ADAM, Heinz Winckler, Koos Kombuis, Wicus van der Merwe, Lize Beekman, Brandon October, Emo Adams and Take Note, Pedro Kruger and Dowwe Dolla.

“We are trying to raise money to help the families of the children who have been diagnosed with cancer,” says Mandie Erasmus from the Little Fighter Cancer Trust.

“Cancer is not a thing that happens to a person of a certain age. We need to create awareness in South Africa as more children are being diagnosed and these families need support.”

She says some of the parents lose their jobs and businesses because of the medical bills and because they want to give their children the best medical care.

“These people need petrol money, food, clothes and money for hospital and doctor bills and that is where we come in and try to assist.”

The trust was started in 2010 by Tania Goslett and Thomas Engela in Paarl.

They were offering support to

families but then they realised that they needed to be a bigger trust to offer assistance to more families. In less than a year they were offering support to 40 families all over Cape Town and even Johannesburg.

The trust shows support to any child diagnosed with cancer under 18, but if the child is over the age and still has cancer, the relationship will continue.

Erasmus came on board after her mother, grandmother and grandfather died of cancer.

“Cancer patients have always been close to my heart. I started reading the trust’s Facebook page and after Tania and Thomas asked me to get involved I started doing fundraisers.”

From these fundraisers outreach programmes were started and the Bag of Hope project was born – the trust makes up food parcels for the families of the cancer children, they also refurbish the beds and drawers. Families also receive bags containing cereal, noodles, coffee, tea, sugar, shampoo, conditioner, toiletries and other things they may need.

Children receive bags with clothes, shoes, stationery, toys, toiletries, juices, a blanket – all the essentials they may need.

“That’s where we come in: we distribute bags to the mothers with nice feminine goodies and flowers.

We will also be cooking a nice lunch for them on the day.”

She says it is “heartwarming” to be one of the beneficiaries of the ’Cause We Can!/Want On Kan! concert.

“We are very humbled to have been selected as a beneficiary.”

Varingfees word afgestel DESIREÉ RORKE

Die gewilde Varing-musiekfees wat die afgelope agt jaar in Brackenfell plaasgevind het, is afgestel.

Die aankondiging is verlede week deur Adéle de Jager van Sanlam se groepsbemarkingsdienste gemaak.

Volgens De Jager het faktore soos die swak ekonomie, kunstenaarstariewe en die afwesigheid van ’n hoofborg die komitee genoodsaak om dié besluit te neem.

“Die feeskomitee het by ’n kruispad gekom oor die suksesvolle voortbestaan van die fees in die formaat soos al ons getroue en lojale ondersteuners dit oor die afgelope agt jaar leer ken en waardeer het. Dit was ’n uiters

moeilike besluit, maar een wat wel met groot omsigtigheid gemaak is. Die opsies wat ondersoek is, sou tot gevolg gehad het dat ons dit waarvoor die fees bekend geword het, naamlik ons land se gewildste kunstenaars en ’n lekker veilige atmosfeer, op die spel moes plaas,” sê sy.

“Die besluit is eenparig geneem dat ons die fees op ’n hoë noot wil afsluit en nie ons standaarde in die proses wil prysgee en sodoende ons ondersteuners teleurstel nie.

Volgens De Jager werk die komitee nog saam om voort te gaan om ander geleenthede van soortgelyke standaarde aan te bied. Een so ’n vertoning van Die Broers sal in Junie/ Julie by die NG gemeente Proteahoogte plaasvind. Hou die webwerf www.varingfees.co.za dop vir meer hieroor.

The word “genius” is often a much-prostituted term because like beauty, genius is in the eye of the beholder.

There is no doubt however that the highly gifted and master guitarist Louis Greeff of the band Omega Limited was a world-class musical maestro during the 60s to 80s and was said by many of his peers to be as brilliant as Jimi Hendrix.

Famous for their rendition of Tchaikovsky One, Omega Limited rocked Southern Africa and like the Idiots and The Alpha Set, had dance floors alight with their unique brand

of music.

The Omega Limited “act” was an aggressive and exciting show which included Louis setting his guitar alight, playing rock songs with his teeth and jumping off the stage to dance with his adoring fans.

The show was an extravaganza filled with excess, outrageousness and an unrestrained demonstration of musical talent. Omega Limited had it all. A good-looking frontman in the guise of Louis synergised by the likes of Mike Brand (drummer), Derek Gordon (vocals, guitar and keyboards)

and Weinberg on bass. Who would forget the Saturday afternoon soiree at the Coral Lounge where bell-bottomed and pop-art adorned fans would savour the ultimate expression of rock, a dash of free love and an ice cold beer?

Sadly Louis Greeff has fallen on hard times in terms of his health. The Fuzzbox will hold a benefit concerton Sunday at the Killarney Race Track (clubhouse) starting at 12:00.

Die Safari-halfmarathon, wat as een van die gewildste sportgebeurtenisse op die sportkalender beskou word, vier eerskomende Dinsdag (1 Mei) sy 25ste bestaansjaar.

Wellington huisves die marathon by die Hoërskool Hugenote.

Die 21.1 km-halfmarathon en die 10.5 km x 2 aflos begin om 07:10. Die 5 km-pretstap begin om 09:00 en die 10 km-stap om 09:30. Die halfmarathon word ook deur die Boland as ’n liga-byeenkoms aanvaar. Fondse sal volgens duidelike en vasgestelde maatstawwe toegeken word. Befondsing sal aan aansoekers toegewys word wat daarna streef om die uitvoerende en skeppende kunste te ontwikkel deur: • Praktiese en volgehoue programme • Vaardigheidsontwikkeling, mentorskap en die kombinering van nuwelinge • Nuwe innoverende projekte te skep of te konseptualiseer • Werke wat moontlik by kultuurfeeste aangebied sal kan word, en wat klem plaas op vroue, die jeug en mense met gestremdhede • Artistieke en skeppende projekte van gehalte • Die ontwikkeling van inheemse werke • Produksies en uitvoerings van uitnemende gehalte.

Durbies draf studentespanne kaf SAREL BURGER

’n Derde agtereenvolgende oorwinning die afgelope naweek maak Durbanville/Bellville tans die vroeë voorloper op die punteleer in die A-afdeling van die WP se Super-rugbyliga.

Maar dit was grootliks ’n teleurstellende naweek vir die spanne in die Tygerbergstreek, behalwe dat Noordelike/Northlink-kollege en

Bellville darem ook aan die wenkant was.

Nadat die Durbies verlede Woensdag ’n veelseggende oorwinning van 27-19 oor Universiteit Kaapstad behaal het, het hulle Saterdag ook 32-10 met die Victoriane afgereken. Die Ikeys se nederlaag was die eerste ná 14 agtereenvolgende oorwinnings sedert verlede seisoen in die Superliga. Durbanville se voorhoede het die studentespan deeglik laat les opsê.

Ook in die wedstryd teen die Victoriane is die studentespan voorlangs ore aangesit en danksy die Durbies se baie balbesit het hulle die meeste aanvalswerk gedoen.

Daarmee is ’n bonuspuntdrie ook bewerkstellig.

Hoewel Tygerberg-klub 18-34 teen Schotsche Kloof/Walmer verloor het – nadat hy met die draaislag nog 18-12 voor was – kon die Kaapse besoekers eers kort voor die einde ’n oorwinning verseker. Die Florida-

As gevolg van die komende langnaweek speel Tygerberg vanaand (Woensdag) teen die Victoriane, terwyl alle ander spanne in hierdie streek eers weer op 5 Mei in aksie sal wees.
