FARMING PROJECT: CULTIVATING SKILLS AND PRODUCE
Growing success DESIREÉ RORKE
A
farming empowerment project in Kraaifontein has become a beacon of hope for a group of formerly unemployed people in Wallacedene. While the project is set to fight the abject poverty that exists in this township, it also serves to be a pilot for what can become a new economic order of land demands in the Western Cape. On Monday the minister for agriculture in the Western Cape, Gerrit van Rensburg, accompanied ward councillors and members of Parliament to the farm for a site visit to
listen to the story of the project first-hand. Four years ago, Wiseman Bozene, desperate and without an income, approached farmer Alfred Borchard on the neighbouring farm Avondrust.
Farming “Wiseman and a small group of people wanted land from me to start farming on, a vision I could clearly share on condition that the land remained productive,” says Borchard. Realising the long-term benefits he agreed, provided that Wiseman and his group worked the land with the aim to be trained as commercial farmers under his
mentorship. “Instead of subsistence farming, I opted for commercial farming in order to strengthen the food supply chain in the Western Cape, while giving these people an opportunity to make a living off the land,” he said. Albeit that the group of prospective farmers had no experience and skills in agriculture, Borchard made a few hectares of land available to them at no cost. Soon the first group got themselves organised, obtained funding from the provincial government and in March last year, the first crops of vegetables were planted. V To page 2.
V Kaartjies is by Computicket beskikbaar.
SMS’e kos R1,50.
