ix out of 10 homeless people who visit The Haven Night Shelter in Kraaifontein, are never rehabilitated and will continue to roam the streets. This shelter, the only one to serve Kraaifontein, Brackenfell and Durbanville, commemorated International Homeless Day on Friday with an open day to create awareness for the the plight of the homeless. Senior supervisor Charlene Florence explains the work they do. “When the homeless person enters our gate, we firstly provide him or her with social services such as food, clothing, a toiletry pack and a hot shower. We will then begin counselling and trying to track the person’s family,” she says. The success rate of reunification with family according to social workers at this facility, is about one out of every 10 people they care for. “We often find that families of the homeless don’t want them back for several reasons, be it personal or economic,” she says. For those who can’t be reunited with their

families, social workers at the haven will assist them with continued counselling over an unspecified period and help them procure employment in order to reintegrate back into society. In this case only three out of 10 homeless people are successful. “Many show a willingness to find work, but in a tough economy it is not easy, resulting in their unrelenting circumstances,” she says. For the rest, they will continue to stay on the streets returning to the shelter for meals and a roof over their heads. Furthermore they also provide care for many homeless who are mentally ill or too old to work. The Haven Night Shelter opened its doors 11 years ago, the only night shelter in the far northern regions of the city, providing up to 100 persons with breakfast, supper, and shelter every night. They have 77 rooms in two dorms, male and female, but are forced to create floor space for mattresses during the winter months. During this time, not an inch of space remains in the shelter. To fight this scourge more facilities, social workers and government and private sector involvement is necessary,” said Beronique Saal a student social worker who is currently finalising her practical phase of studies at the shelter. Another challenge is substance abuse. “Again there is a shortage of facilities, and most rehab centres have very long waiting lists. Rehab treatment is costly but centres do sponsor the homeless who are serious about rehabilitating,” she says. Renate Scott (not her real name) is a retired nurse who was abandoned by her family and has lived at the shelter for a year. “My children dropped me here saying it would only be for two months, but never came back to fetch me again. What can I do, I’m too old to work now,” she says. The shelter is subsidised by the provincial government but according to social worker Lizelle Coetzee, these subsidies are not sufficient thus leaving the shelter at the mercy of donors from the private sector. One such company is Verso Financial
Services in Bellville, who have supported the shelter for four years and recently refurbished their bathrooms. “We are thankful for all the help we re-
ceive, but continuously rely on the community for more exposure and assistance,” said manager Cedric Fryer. V The shelter can be reached at 021 987 1967.

Licence centre closed for now The City of Cape Town will be carrying out an upgrade of the Brackenfell Driving Licence Testing Centre’s (DLTC) yard facility, starting on 21 October 2013. The driver testing centre will therefore be closed for driver testing until 22 November 2013. Alternative arrangements have been put

Die Stad het op 28 Maart verlede jaar die aansoek voor die Wes-Kaapse hooggeregshof gebring en ook ’n interdik bekom dat geen konstruksie in verband met die tolprojek mag voortgaan voor die finale beslissing van die hof gegee is nie.

Op 18 Julie, Mandela-dag, het elke graad ’n “onbeskaamd eties”-eed afgelê en hul gemeenskapsprojek aan die skool voorgestel. Die graad 8’s het onderneem om kos en komberse vir die Fisantekraal Animal Welfare in te samel. Nie-bederfbare kospakkies wat die gr. 9’s ingesamel het, sal in die vierde kwartaal aan die Alta du Toit-sentrum in Boston oorhandig word. Die gr. 10’s beoog om die Fisantekraal Animal Welfare te besoek en te help om die diere te was en te versorg. Daar is ook al dierebenodigdhede ingesamel. Die matrieks het saam met Investec gewerk om geld vir die Stop Rhino Poaching in te samel. Hulle het bandjies verkoop en geld ingesamel. Die gr. 11’s het reeds die inisiatief geneem en die bul by die horings gepak deur bystand aan die Karl Bremer-verkragtingsentrum te ver-
leen. Hierdie sentrum se deure staan altyd oop vir getraumatiseerde verkragtingslagoffers van enige geslag en ouderdom. Twintig present van dié slagoffers is nog jong kinders. Daar is vyf dokters wat permanent aan diens is en in skofte van twaalf ure per dag werk. Op ’n sonnige Woensdagmiddag 18 September het ’n paar van DF se gr. 11’s ’n besoek aan die Karl Bremer-verkragtingsentrum afgelê. Ou speelgoed, klere en ander skenkings van onder meer ’n rusbank, faksmasjien en twee hospitaalbeddens is deur leerders ingesamel en aan die sentrum oorhandig. Bykans twintig ywerige leerders het ingespring en gordynrelings en gordyne opgehang en sommer ook die kleuterafdeling reggepak. More schools for Brackenfell Two new private schools are set to open in the fast growing Cape Town northern suburb of Brackenfell, following a massive wave of demand by young families to settle in the area. Baanbrekers sorg vir snelle ontwikkeling DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke
I
n 1980 was Brackenfell nie veel meer as ’n plattelandse dorp nie, met net die nodige plattelandse noodsaaklikhede. Stel jou dit voor: Grondpaaie, kleinhoewes, ’n spoorlynoorgang met hekke en ligte en selfs ’n plattelandse algemene handelaar waar jy alles van brood en melk tot kerse en veevoer kon koop. ’n Eerstydse burgemeester moes selfs help om sy ampsmotor met ’n tuinslang af te spuit voor amptelike funksies. Moeilik om te visualiseer as jy in vandag se Brackenfell, drie dekades later, woonagtig is. Dis juis dié ontwikkelingspotensiaal in die area wat in daardie tydperk deur ’n paar baanbrekers raakgesien is, en wie se volgehoue pogings oor die jare sou sorg vir die snelle dorpsontwikkeling.
Tagtigs Trouens, in die tagtigerjare was Brackenfell, soos vandag nog steeds die geval is, die vinnigste ontwikkelende dorp in die WesKaap, meen Kobus Brynard, eertydse burgemeester en oud-inwoner van Brackenfell. Brynard wat in die vroeë tagtigs al op die raad gedien het, het in 1988 onder-burgemeester geword en is in 1991 as onafhanklike kandidaat tot burgemeester verkies. Hy het die amp behou tot en met die instelling van die oorgangsrade in 1996, waartydens Brackenfell, Kuilsrivier, dele van Kraaifontein, en Bluedowns saamgesmelt het. In 2000, met die totstandkoming van die megastad, het Brynard uitgetree. “Dinge was so anders in daardie jare. Ons het alles wat ons gedoen het, gedoen vir die liefde van die saak. ’n Mens kan amper sê dit was op ’n vrywillige basis. As raadslid
was my salaries maar R600 en later as burgemeester R5 000 per maand. Dit was niks as jy dink aan die salarisse van vandag se burgemeesters nie,” vertel hy. Trouens, die toelaag is gebruik om lede van die publiek in die dorp te onthaal. “In die jare voor megastede – soos die Stad Kaapstad vandag – het alles nog ’n bietjie van ’n ‘personal touch’ gehad. Elke dorp het byvoorbeeld sy eie verkeersmanne gehad wat heeldag en aldag sigbaar was op die dorp se paaie. “Alles wat in die gemeenskap aangewend was, was met baie liefde gedoen en as burgemeester het ek gereeld direk met inwoners gepraat.” Hy onthou ook nog goed hoe hy en sy bestuurder die ampsmotor gereeld met ’n tuinslang moes afspoel, wanneer hy by sy huis in Vredekloof opgelaai is vir amptelike funksies. “Daar was net ’n tweespoorstofpaadjie voor my huis – een van die min huise in Vredekloof in daardie jare.” Brynard het veral saam met die voormalige stadsklerk, Wessel Visser, sy merk gemaak in die ontwikkeling van Brackenfell. “Ek onthou Wessel as ’n baie dinamiese man. Ons denke was baie dieselfde in die sin dat ons as administrasie alles in ons vermoë wou doen om ontwikkeling te stimleer. Ons het nooit gedink in terme van hoe ons dit kon stuit nie.” Min of meer dieselfde tyd het Lance Dickson die eiendomsmark in Brackenfell betree toe Dickson-Eiendomme sy deure vir die eerste keer in 1980 in Ou Paarlpad oopgemaak het. Sy persoonlike en sakeleuse was “eiendom is rykdom” en hy het geglo daaraan dat die geld wat in Brackenfell gemaak word, weer in Brackenfell spandeer moet word.
“Ek en my vrou het in 1968 op ’n kleinhoewe in Ruwari gewoon. Paying tribute to the great ABBA Mike McCullagh brings ABBA to life in a new tribute show at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar until 9 November, every Wednesday to Saturday. Skoolmeisies in Scottsville is Vrydagmiddig bederf met ’n pamperlangsessie, terwyl hulle bewus gemaak is van die gevare vir jong meisies in vandag se lewe. Die bemagtigingsprojek is aangebied deur die plaaslike organisasie, Talita Koum, van Scottsville se Metodiste Kerk. “Die meisies se hande, naels en hare gaan gedoen word, waarna hulle bietjie pret gaan hê met ’n handwerk-werksessie en lekker eetgoed. Ons wil graag die jong meisies in ons gemeenskap bederf en terselfdertyd waarsku oor dinge soos misdaad en dwelms,” sê Maureen Malgas van Talita Koum. Kapt. Gerhard Niemand van die Kraaifontein-polisie het die meisies toegespreek oor die gevare van dwelmmisbruik en aspekte van persoonlike veiligheid. Die naam van die organisasie is geskoei op Markus 5:41, waar Jesus die verlamde dogter aan die hand geneem het en gesê het: “Talita koum!” – wat beteken “klein dogter-

Beoordelaars krap kop om wentuin aan te wys Onafhanklike beoordelaars het verlede Vrydag hul hande vol gehad by die Primêre Skool Petunia toe hulle die wentuin uit tien pragtuine moes aanwys. Van die kriteria was oorspronklikheid, kleur, kreatiwiteit en tegniese uitleg. Die graad 5A-klas van Diane van RhynJulies het vir ’n tweede keer met die louere weggestap. Die graad 4B-klas was tweede en die graad 7B’s was in derde plek. Volgens Faizal Yon, die skoolhoof, was die kompetisie geesdriftig ontvang en selfs die ouers het by sommige van die tuine ingespring en gehelp.
Die Graad 5A-klas is saam met hul onderwyser, Diane Van Rhyn-Julies, by hul wentuin.

Inwoners van Brackenfell, Kraaifontein en Durbanville kan nou ook gereeld die wêreldbekende “whopper”-hamburger geniet. Burger King het gister om 12:00 sy deure by die CapeGate-winkelsentrum geopen. Dit is die vierde van die kettinggroep se restaurante wat in Kaapstad oopgemaak het – die laaste twee daarvan in Cavendish Square in die suidelike voorstede in Julie en in Tygervallei-winkelsentrum in Junie. “Vandat ons die eerste restaurant in Mei vanjaar in Kaapstad geopen het, het ons sukses geniet met die aanbieding van ons produkte, nes Suid-Afrikaners vir die eerste keer die ikoniese handelsmerk geniet het,” sê Jaye Sinclair, die uitvoerende hoof van Burger King Suid-Afrika. “Ons sal voortgaan met die bekendstelling van die handelsmerk in Kaapstad, maar sal vroeg volgende jaar na die ander provinsies uitbrei,” sê hy. Sinclaire het aan TygerBurger gesê dat hy opgewonde is oor die nuwe winkel in

Ons lei hulle op om hul loopbane by Burger King SA te begin,” sê hy. Intussen het bouwerk aan die eerste burgerpattie-fabriek in Suid-Afrika ook in September in Elsiesrivier begin. Volgens Sinclaire sal die fabriek ultramodern wees en werk verskaf aan sowat 40 mense. Nadat vyf restaurante volgende jaar in Johannesburg oopmaak, sal nog drie winkels in die Kaap volg – in Kennilworth, Stellenbosch en Kuilsrivier. Honderde sweet ten bate van Kersfonds DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke
Honderde Brackenfellers en stappers van wyd en syd het Maandagoggend met ’n gesug en ’n gebrul – vol pyne en skete – by hul verskeie werkplekke opgedaag. Die rede hiervoor was die marathonstap, wat op Sondag by die Brackenfell-sportterrein ten bate van Die Burger-Kersfonds plaasgevind het. Die stap was ’n reuse-sukses waartydens 332 stappers altesaam 1 840 km afgelê het. Daar was ook twee rolstoelryers en ’n stapper wat die 5 km-roete met ’n loopraam voltooi het. Die jongste stapper was die 2-jarige Zanelle van Rooyen wat die roete voltooi het. Die hoogtepunt van die dag was die TygerBurger/Bok Radio-uitdaging, waarin die twee gedugte spanne gelykop geëeindig het met 26 rondtes elk – ’n hele 130 km per span. “Dit was drie ure se pret, en om die trofee te deel, is seker nie die einde van die wêreld nie. Volgende jaar maak ons weer so!” het Stehan Schoeman, TygerBurger se spankaptein, gesê. Die trofee vir die man wat die meeste kilometers afgelê het, het gegaan aan Rayno van der Westhuizen vir sy 55 km. Hy is lid van die Brackenfell-atletiekklub en Brackenfellmannenkin-pis-vasbytspan. Laurentius en Bouwer Schoonwinkel en Wherner Smuts was kort op sy hakke.
Hulle het ook almal vir die Union Cyclespan gestap. Die ander twee maatskappy wat spanne ingeskryf het, was Ital Oven en Rovic. Die vrou wat die meeste kilometers afgelê het, was Gerda de Kock met 20 km en die kind wat die verste geloop het, was Streicher van der Westhuizen, ’n 7-jarige graad 2-leerder van die Laerskool Fanie Theron, met 15 km. ’n Bietjie humor was later in die dag ’n pleister vir baie nerwe, toe Heinrich “Triple H” du Plooy, die vroue se arms omhoog laat skiet het met ’n veiling vir ’n afspraak met hom ten bate van die Kersfonds. Die plaaslike sangeres, Amoré, was die gelukkige wenner met ’n bod van R265. “Ons was oorweldig deur die belangstelling van die publiek en almal wat ’n donasie kom maak het. Dit is net weer eens ’n bewys dat die gemeenskap omgee en daar nog baie mense daar buite is wat ’n hand, of in dié geval ’n “voet” sal uitsteek om te help. Ons bedank die gemeenskap daarvoor,” sê Laurentius Bouwer, wat die projek vier jaar gelede van stapel gestuur het. Borge wat vanjaar bedank is, is Union Cycles, Bolt Security, 3D Crystal Creations, asook die Brackenfell-atletiek- en -krieketklubs. Hugo Nieuwoudt, Amoré Rudman, Jaques G, Charl Kruger en Dirkie van Dyk het gratis as gaskunstenaars opgetree, terwyl Ettiene Jonas die klank behartig het.

TWEEDE AANVULLENDE WAARDASIELYS TOT DIE 2012- ALGEMENE WAARDASIELYS (SV02), VIR DIE 2013/2014-BOEKJAAR Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(i) van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Eiendomsbelasting (Wet 6 of 2004), hierna die “Wet” genoem, word daar hiermee kennis gegee dat die tweede aanvullende waardasielys van die 2012- algemene waardasielys (SV02) vir die 2013/2014-boekjaar vir die publiek by die lokale hieronder ter insae lê vanaf 21 Oktober 2013 tot 29 November 2013. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by hierdie lokale beskikbaar. Die waardasielys is ook vanaf 21 Oktober 2013 op die Raad se webwerf beskikbaar (adres hieronder). Eiendomme word ingevolge artikel 78(1) van die Wet op die tweede aanvullende waardasielys van die 2012- algemene waardasielys (SV02) geplaas indien dit: a) foutiewelik uit die waardasielys gelaat is; b) na die laaste algemene waardasie by die munisipaliteit ingesluit is; c) na die laaste algemene waardasie onderverdeel of gekonsolideer is; d) ‘n wesenlike toename of vermindering in markwaarde ondergaan het sedert die laaste algemene waardasie; e) in die laaste algemene waardasie aansienlik verkeerd gewaardeer is; f) om enige ander buitengewone rede herwaardeer moet word; g) waarvan die kategorie verander het. Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil, binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar by die munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte van eiendomme wat op die SV02-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV02-waardasies in kennis gestel word via die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is. Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ‘n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ‘n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verband moet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokale hieronder genoem beskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ‘n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

Passengers on bakkies not on! In the past week I was overtaken by two heavily loaded bakkies with passengers sitting on top of the actual load. This not only contradicts the seatbelt law but also goes against reasonably sized vehicle loads. For the amount of emphasis placed on wearing a seatbelt, how is it okay to carry passengers on the back of an open top bakkie? Personally, I have had an issue with bakkies or smaller utility vehicles carrying passengers in urban areas for a long time but I don’t feel that people quite grasp the dangers. According to Arrive Alive the restrictions enforced against transporting passengers on the back of an open top bakkie is for those seated, the rear door must be 350 mm in height and when the passengers are standing a minimum of 900 mm in height is required. This seriously needs to be reconsidered: if for some reason this vehicle has to come to an emergency stop, what price are those on the back of the bakkie going to pay? CONCERNED DRIVER Email
Boelies slaan toe, skool trek skouers op Ons kind is regdeur sy hele laerskoolloopbaan geboelie. Telkens word ons deur die skool verseker dat “alles” uitgesorteer is – naïef glo ons dit. Die boelies word verskeie keer gewaarsku, maar geen aksie vind plaas nie. Die ouers van die boelies word volgens die skoolhoof ook nie in kennis gestel nie, “want dit los nie die probleem op nie”. Miskien ná die vyfde oortreding… Om die departement in te kry, was vrugteloos. Ons kind moes ’n sielkundige sien –
“dalk lê die fout by hom!” Die fout was toe nie by hom nie, hy is “normaal.” Vriende het saamgestaan, ons moet koerante toe gaan. Gou is ons deur die, duidelik geirriteerde, hoof ingelig dat dit “naamskending” sou wees. Dit, ongeag die jarelange naamskending wat ons kind moes deurstaan. Die skoolhoof: “Ons rûe is teen die muur!” Wat van die slagoffer? Saans bid ons kind vir genade en beskerming. Daar word vir die boelies gebid. Soggens herinner ek: Moenie vrees wys nie – boelies teer op vrees; alles is oukei, jy’s veilig. Hierdie week het ek weer eens aanskou hoe drie leerders ons kind op die krieketveld aanrand en vloek. Geen onderwyser in sig nie. ’n Prefek het giggelend toegekyk. Ons het dadelik die onderhoof gaan sien. Die leerlinge is ingeroep en gewaarsku, maar die ouers is nie ingelig nie. Nog nooit is daar van die boelies verwag om om verskoning te vra nie. Wat het geword van “keuses het gevolge”? “Ek is baie jammer”, het volksvreemd geword. Voor skole nie werklik ‘n “no tolerance”-beleid het nie, sal boelies seëvier. Hoekom word die regte van die slagoffer nie beskerm nie? Hoekom is onderwysers te bang om meer daadwerklik op te tree? Taking away my train ticket illegal I am an official of the National Transport Movement (NTM). It is sad to witness how Metrorail staff abuse commuters by taking their monthly tickets if they are found in first class coaches without a Metroplus ticket. Say the person stays in Eerste River, the monthly third-class ticket costs R179.
The commuter is then found in a Metroplus coach without a Metroplus ticket. His/her monthly is then confiscated and it must be fetched from Cape Town plus R40 for a fine. The commuter is now at risk of losing his/her job because he/she must struggle to get a single to Cape Town. For a student who writes tests its worse. What they are doing is robbery because the monthly ticket they confiscate is the commuter’s legal property and it is unlawful to take it. There are legal processes in place how to deal with commuters who do not have tickets. What Metrorail staff are doing is criminal. Staff are not trained properly by accredited tutors in what to do in such situations. They must stop with these wrong and illegal actions. Just imagine a traffic officer issues you with a parking ticket, takes your car and keeps it until you pay your fine what inconvenience you will suffer. Do not allow your constitutional rights to be abused. Commuters issued with such a booking fee must insist on a receipt. Hundreds of commuters are removed from trains each month during Metrorail’s fare recovery actions. The cost of non-compliance can be high, as scores end up being prosecuted as a result. Some 185 offenders are prosecuted every month for rail-related offences. In terms of the Legal Succession Act, Act 9 of 1989 commuters must have the correct ticket for their travel class: Our employees are obliged to apply the law without fear of favour.

Records smashed as fine wine snapped up Records tumbled at the 29th Nedbank Cape Winemakers’ Guild Auction held at Spier in the Stellenbosch Winelands recently with the highest sales ever recorded exceeding R8,4 million. The auction, conducted by Henré Hablutzel of Hofmeyr Mills Auctioneers for the 16th consecutive year, attracted 145 local and 18 foreign buyers. In total 3 218 cases were sold at an average price of R2 609 per case and an average price per bottle of R435. Neil Ellis Auction Reserve Pinotage 2011 was the third top selling wine based on an average price per case equivalent of 6x750ml for R4 910. W
ith a voice that will give you goosebumps, local singer, Selim Kagee, is the next big thing in Cape Town music. The 34-year-old, who had never sung on record until he was discovered, is gearing up to perform with a 22-piece orchestra at the Baxter Concert Hall on Saturday (19 October). “I was discovered by musician Clive Ridgeway, about two years ago,” Selim explains. “I was taking lessons in his guitar group knowing that he was a great producer and a songwriter but I wanted to get involved in recording an album.” Selim, who is classically trained, approached Clive, but says it took a while before he actually sat down and listened to him sing. “But when he did, fortunately he was impressed and he liked the sound of my voice,” Selim says.
Recording The two then started their recording journey together. The first song they recorded was a song called “Cry for Love”. “He came to me with this wonderful, anthemic song, very simply on his gui-
tar, and it had this enormous, powerful chorus,” Selim recalls. They developed the song further, having it arranged for an orchestra and translating half the song into Italian. Selim says that was the start of the album. “I didn’t actually always know I could sing,” Selim says, adding: “I thought I could sing, but I couldn’t.”
Theatre He says growing up, he didn’t know how to sing until he was about 19 or 20 and got involved with theatre. “In fact, in this one play, I was required to sing a song as a duet with someone else and I learnt the song, come rehearsal, I sang the song to the best of my abilities,” Selim says. After the rehearsal, the director said to Selim: “Rather let the other guy sing.” “Since that day I’ve made it my mission to learn how to sing and how to develop my voice,” he says. Selim then met his singing teacher, Jean Stuart, who worked with him for about 13 years. Through training, she helped Selim strengthen his voice, training him in a classical style of singing.“And that’s how I came to sing,” Selim says. Selim’s show at the Baxter will be his biggest to date, with performances at
17:00 and 20:30 and besides the orchestra, concert-goers can also look forward to lighting designs, visual projections. Selim will be sharing the stage with a group of hand-picked musicians including guitarist, Bienyameen Camroodien, who is widely considered one of South Africa’s best classical and flamenco guitarists. “The show is about nostalgic songs, romantic songs, some old songs, some original songs, but most of all it is about beautiful music,” Selim says.
Fundraiser The show will also be in support of two different causes. The main beneficiary is the Santos Football Club Youth Academy, while a portion will also be donated to eight-year-old Gareth Hawkins, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. After another lengthy and exhausting season for club golfers around the country, the finalists for this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge have been determined after the usual club competitions followed by the regional finals. At the age of 13, Connor Degroote (Kenridge Primary) who plays off a 6 handicap is the youngest player in the field. Jean Hugo who is currently in matric at Stellenberg will also stroll the fairways at Sun City. Jean plays off a 3 handicap. This will be the first time these two players from the Durbanville Golf Club get the opportunity to play the Gary Player and Lost City courses. They qualified via the Glacier by Sanlam Junior Series. A massive 36 067 participants – 29 645 men and 6 422 women – took part in the 21st edition of this competition.

magine cycling for 85 kilometres in windy weather. You see the fitter cyclists around you smiling and probably thinking: “This is what it’s all about!” You try and let your mind drift to family, work or anything but the pain is shooting through your legs. They call this the Tiletoria West Coast Express Fun Ride. Fun? Through all the pain you see the serene surroundings and come to the conclusion that the word “fun” is not at all out of place. On Sunday this event drew more than 1 700 keen cyclists from all over Cape Town. They cycled from Sunningdale on the R27, to Atlantis, to Mamré, through Melkbosstrand and finally to Big Bay. One of the more committed cyclists said he has participated in similar events and that this one is by far the best. For those who were not quite up for the 85 km race, there was the 65 km and the 19 km events. Some participants looked just like bona fide calf-muscle-herders but the shorter route
was reserved for the kids, the slightly heavier cyclists and those who wanted fun without the accompanying pain. Event organiser and chairperson of the Outriders Cycle Club, Rodney Beck, says the whole point of the event is to promote cycling to the broader public. “Top cyclists will cycle every day of the week anyway. We need to concentrate on the man in the street, who wants to get on his bicycle, enjoy his cycling and have a bit of a social as well,” he elaborates. Sunday’s event, which is the 10th West Coast Express, drew 1 872 cyclist. According to Beck there were more competitors this year than the last, despite various factors such as the absence of league riders. “We offered fantastic medical assistance on the road, 125 marshals and nine traffic officers, so this made it unbelievably safe for the cyclists,” he concludes. All this added up to an event to remember, and even the most unfit spectator would have wished they too could experience the fun and the pain of the West Coast Express.
