Fundraising initiative a success Dressed in fairy outfits, members of non-profit organisation Fountain Angels Pantry, participated in a fundraising initiative at the traffic lights opposite Okavango Crossing Shopping Centre, with hopes of raising enough money to help provide food to 100 Kraaifontein and Brackenfell families. Hooting motorists participated, by donating cash to the “fairy godparents”. Pictured here are, front: Lynne Louw, Cheryl Wilson, Lesley Forbes and Annelie van Rensburg. he idea of creating a garden for Scottsville led to the polluted park on Frans Conradie Street being cleaned by residents. Residents assembled at the site over two days, Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August, to carry out their task. Friday saw the planting of trees as well as cleaning of the site while the public concluded the work by helping to remove garbage
out of the area. Project coordinator Shaun MacDonald says this was the second time the community cleaned the land which is located opposite Harmonie Clinic. “The first clean-up took place at the beginning of the lockdown period and because the debris was not cleaned up, the problem continued.” MacDonald says the council has been supportive of their project, supplying them with material they would need to carry out their tasks. “The ward council has been very suppor-

MacDonald says the commitment shown by the community’s younger residents was a sign the garden would be a good investment for residents. “We had children as young as seven years old coming to help with the planting of the trees. He says involving young citizens in such projects is important because it makes them aware of their role as residents of the com-

munity. “We loved having the children and youth there because they made up a big percentage of participants. These kinds of projects keep them away from being part of the problems caused by the social ills we face in the community.” MacDonald says they will be collaborating with the City’s solid waste management department in future projects. “The vision is to have a more active society. We invite residents to come out and get involved in community projects.”
