Parks receive a facelift H

omeowners and residents of the Whisperwood Homeowners Association in Langeberg Heights spent their Saturday to clean the Busato and Arab parks on 14 September.

This action was one of the residents’ preventative measures against the recent attacks on women and children.

“We have been promised on several occasions that the municipality will clean up the parks in our area as the grass and

weeds in and around the children’s play area had grown to an astounding 600cm high” said Donovan Marais, homeowner in the Whisperwood housing development.

He said despite several phone calls and written requests to the City of Cape Town and ward councillors from the owners around these parks over the past few months, nothing has been done.

hen her children left school 33 years ago, she decided to be of service to her community and fellow man.

Since the 1980s Margaret Voogt (83) from Blomtuin, Bellville, has dedicated her whole life to serving her fellow man and community – and is still doing it. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers.

“I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home.

She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do.

“I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries.

“Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect secondhand clothing and every three months we have a sale. My team and I usually stored the clothing in boxes at the hospital, but a storeroom was cleaned and we use that space as our storeroom,” Margaret said.

She visits Karl Bremer every Thursday and all the clothes that are not sold are handed over to Patricia Groenewald of Avondale, to hand out where there is a need.

Margaret Voogt (83) knitting bootees and bonnets for the premature babies at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals.

I am a volunteer catering coordinator at the Bellville East Reformed Church for the nongovernmental organisation, Koningskinders. This is a group of underprivileged kids that we take on a camping trip every term.

“The kids are from Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and the principal selects who attends the camps. The camp is over five days and is held at the Melkbosstrand Cultural Centre and matrics or college students are the group leaders. Each group leader has three children to take care of for the duration of the camp and the camp has a Christian theme,” she said.

The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community.

At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day.

“I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled.

Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild.

They used their own finances and rented two weed eaters and a large trailer to clean up the parks.

Marais said the weeds and grass were so high in certain areas that children were playing hide-and-seek in the brushes. “Street name signs were not visible and ‘discoverable’ as the grass surrounding these signs were cut away. Various bottles, paper waste and even two goose eggs were discovered by the residents who slowly but surely cut away the grass and weeds.”

A three-meter trailer filled with tree branches, grass, weeds as well as paper bags, wood slats and two beer bottles, were dumped at the Kraaifontein waste disposal center later that afternoon.

“We were so concerned for our children’s safety that they were prohibited to play in the park as we feared that someone might hide in the tall grass waiting for them. We are so grateful to the few Samaritans who took the initiative to clean the area which looked terrible before today,” a concerned mother said.

“It is very important for us to create a safe and neat-looking area for all the residents of Whisperwood and if the council and responsible parties thereof; who promised us service delivery. will not do it – we will.

“It is just sad that even the pensioners (one being 70 years old) and children had to work in the blazing sun for hours because the system we were promised prior to the previous election, failed us. One has to then ask, ‘why are we paying taxes?’” Marais added.

ith 151 murders in the last financial year, Kraaifontein police station, ranks number 12 on the list of the top 30 stations with the most murders in South Africa.

The national crime statistics for the financial year, from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019, were released by police minister Bheki Cele on Thursday 12 September.

Although 35 people less were murdered this year, in comparison to last year’s 186, murder rates remain high.

There was an increase in attempted murder cases, with 116 cases compared to 103 the previous year.

Elderly get houses after a 20-year wait Elderly residents from various locations around Cape Town received their historical title deeds during a handover ceremony held at the Atlhone Stadium on Monday 16 September.

The ceremony symbolised full and unambiguious ownership of houses to these residents; from Wallacedene in Kraaifontein, Langa, Atlantis, Joe Slovo, Kleinvlei, Wesbank and Mfuleni; some of whom have waited for over 20 years to receive these title deeds.

One of the City of Cape Town’s key priority areas to bring about redress is to empower residents who were previously denied access to property ownership.

“The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones. There is no greater pride than taking care of a house that you can call your own and turning it onto a home,” Mayco member for urban management Grant Twigg said.

The oldest recipient of a title deed, 79-year-old Paul Ostenhuizen from Beacon Valley in Mitchells Plain, was proud to receive his title deed on the day.

Grant said that many families still live as tenants or without ownership rights in houses they have lived in for many years.

“Handing over title deeds is a way in which the City is able to rectify the injustices of the past.”

“Service delivery is about improving the lives of people and adding value to their lives. It is part if the City’s commitment to building a caring city,” Twigg added further.

“Owning a home for many residents is something that they only dreamed of. We are pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality.

“The formal handover of title deeds is a remarkable event that trnsforms lives and empowers residents,” he concluded.

A total of 88 cases for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were detected, compared to last year’s 154 cases.

For drug-related crime, the number decreased by 32.1% with 2972 cases this year compared to the 4377 cases the previous year.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is still a concern with 408 cases this year compared to 355 cases last year.

Kraaifontein police says the crime statistics reflect on the state of affairs of crime in the community and allows for better strategies to be implemented in the combat against crime.

Kraaifontein police spokespersan Capt Hein Hendricks says the police need the as-

sistance of the community to fight crime in Kraaifontein. “The community plays a pivotal role in combating crime. The community must be the ears and eyes of the police because crime can only be combated through a joint venture by police and the community,” he said.

He further says although the deployment of soldiers to the area made a positive impact on crime in the area, the statistics released cover the period before the army was deployed in July. He encouraged the community to report criminal activities in the area.

“Crime can only be decreased if the community report crime. Reporting crime allows the police to plan better and to allocate the proper resources to the affected areas.”

Youth take a stand THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Members of Kraaifontein Youth Unite embarked on a peaceful protest around their neighbourhoods to address their frustrations over the lack of safety in the community on Saturday 14 September.

The protest started at Kraaifontein High School, through Wallacedene and ended at the Kraaifontein police station before proceeding through Summerville and Scottsdene.

The group invited roleplayers who ensure the safety of the community.

Ward 7 and 111 councillors Grant Twigg and the local community policing forum could not attend the initiative and only the police were present.

The learners proceeded to sign a memo-

randum to express their concerns.

“The memorandum will now be presented to all stakeholders at a date to be decided upon,” Alexis van Kervel of Kraaifontein Youth Unite said.

The protest action was a response to the recently released crime statistics, the prevalence of gender-based violence and the concern of the safety of women and children.

Van Kervel said that when trying to find solutions to the problems faced by the community, it is important to look at the root cause.

“It is because of this understanding that our learners decided to go out into the Kraaifontein community and ask men to stand in solidarity with them,” she explained. “The learners provided all men with an information pamphlet which contained

Church receives funds from City

Police treat the elderly: Kraaifontein police officers visited KSE Kraaifontein Home for the Aged in Scottsville on Tuesday 16 September. The men in blue presented a safety talk to the residents to empower them to guard against any form of abuse.

The residents were also informed about the dangers of smoking indoors as well as emergency evacuation. The home has 151 residents. The police also praised the staff of 70 who cares for the residents. eshua Covenant Church in Joostenberg Vlakte has received a R60 000 cash injection to spend on its various community development initiatives.

The church reacted to the City’s call for non-governmental and non-profit organisations to apply for the grant-in-aid funds that comes from the City’s ward allocation budget.

“The organisation applied after seeing the grand-in-aid advertisement in the Tygerburger on 23 July and being the only organisation to have responded to the advert, it was fitting that we grant them the funds,” ward 111 councillor Brenda Hansen said.

Reverend Samuel Dean of the church said the funds would come in handy for the church. He said the church is very grateful as this is the first time it has been allocated to them since 2013 when they first applied.

Being involved in several community development initiatives, Dean said the grant is strictly allocated for projects and will be used towards these projects.

The church will have to produce monthly progress reports including expenditure reports to the City.

“This will help us run various skills training such as women empowerment and positive parenting workshops among others.”

Hansen said registered community organisations are considered registered stakeholders of the City.

New first-aiders ready to assist THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

esidents from various communities in Kraaifontein attended a first aid training course held at the Yeshua Covenant Church in Joostenberg Vlakte on Thursday 19 September.

The training was aimed at equipping the community with basic skills on how to help someone in times of an emergency, while waiting for an ambulance.

The training was organised by the church in partnership with the Western Cape emergency services department and the Standing Rock Rehab Centre.

Jonathan Blankenberg from the emergency services department facilitated the training and said it was important for communities to know what to do in cases where someone is in a life-threatening situation and first aid needs to be performed quickly while waiting for an ambulance.

Blankenberg added the course is endorsed by the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University.

Euphonia Manyika from the Bavumeleni Children Centre said the training was a learning curve for her.

“Before the training, many of us used to think we need a lot of expensive material to perform first aid, but we were taught that we can use basic things we have in our houses to save lives. We were also taught how to perform CPR on patients who are in life-

threatening situations,” she said.

Another trainee, Dean Barker, said he found the training very interesting.

“What I found most interesting is how to identify when a person’s life is at risk. This means that we can now help members of our families; especially senior citizens who are prone to diseases such as heart attacks and strokes,” he said.

“Coming from backgrounds such as ours where finding employment is difficult, we are now equipped with skills that could make it easier for us to find jobs.”

Reverend Samuel Dean of Yeshua Covenant Church said the training was very necessary, especially with the increase of violence in Kraaifontein – one of the top 10 crime hotspots in the country.

“With increasing violence in our communities, it is important that the community is empowered with such skills as it focuses on saving the lives of the first responder as well as victims of crime, violence and abuse,” he said.

Dean further said the trainees were very appreciative and said the programme has added value to their lives.

“The young men from Standing Rock Rehab Centre said they would like to become paramedics.

The training motivated every person that attended.”

Each trainee will receive a certificates and an identity document, stating they are trained EMS practitioners.

This was probably the biggest parkoff in Africa, says organiser Garth Hendrickse. He said there was a count of 634 Hondas at the event, with the intention to break the Guiness World Record of 569 Hondas. “To break the record we needed more than 570

Honda cars to take a 3.2km drive on a public road with traffic control. But when the drive started it was chaos and people exited at the wrong entrances. Traffic officers were also confused with the planned route. However, we had a good turnout.”

Young and old benefit from tutoring service AVRIL FILLIES

F

our residents from Kraaifontein are trying to make a difference in the area by offering a variety of services to learners and adults to improve their academic and computer skills.

“We started the company, MJS Tutoring Services, to help the learners in our area that needs it the most.

“Our launch was in July. Posters were put up at local businesses and public libraries in the community,” said Meshika de Smidt, founder of the organisation.

Services on offer include homework assistance, private tutoring in selected subjects as well as basic adult computer training.

“We also have reading and phonics sessions for our younger students as there was a definite need for us to increase the reading capabilities of children.

“Due to the fact that we don’t have marketing material to go to

schools, we opted for posters. Everything is coming out of our own pockets as we want to plough back into our community,” she said.

According to her, they have a home-based office where the services are offered and it is quiet and gives the student the ability to focus on the task at hand.

“Between the four staff members, we have a range of qualifications, including great academic achievements with 80% or more in subjects.

“Ilse Anderson has a teaching degree and years of experience and I believe this makes us a dream team,” De Smidt said.

Her mom, Judy de Smidt, has been a social worker all her life.

She is now retired and helps watch over students when they are doing their homework or studying. Anderson has a foundation phase diploma.

“Keenan McDonald forms part of the management and marketing team. He also keeps the office in

good maintenance.

She said before starting the company she tutored her family.

“I applied for my foundation phase degree at Unisa but has also invested my time in doing my TEFL course part time,” De Smidt said.

The homework assistance is for those who struggle with homework or who need help with projects or oral preparations. Sessions are normally only 30 minutes long.

“This is to assist those with reading and dialect problems. Due to the sessions being short the assistance is very helpful for the student.

“Thus far we’ve produced everything from our own pockets and we do not have any sponsors to help us move forward faster,” she said.

Thanks for keeping us on our toes A former editor once told me the quickest way to find out if people still read your newspaper, is by deliberately printing a typo in the headline ...

While that was not the case on page 2 of TygerBurger (with the exception of the Tyger Valley edition) last week – “Surcarge (sic) by City is unregulated” – the number of readers pointing it out via email, WhatsApp, Facebook and telephonically showed us how important their weekly dose of TygerBurger news still is.

Even more importantly, that language and grammar, contrary to the way the majority of people speak these days, are still high on our readers’ list of priorities.

If I may comment on some of these letters: Yes Antje, it is indeed “most embarrassing”. To Jeff, considering the production team left the office at 22:00 last Monday (due to an earlier deadline) after a 14 hour shift of staring at words the whole day, it was most likely not only the proof reader, but also the journalist, layout artist, second-line proof reader and yours truly that were “asleep”.

While we take every comment to heart, of which many were tonguein-cheek, some were downright nasty.

Calling the journalist “incompetent” or “not qualified”, or claiming we “think our readers are stupid” are uncalled for.

Anyone that has ever worked in a newsroom will tell you it’s a miracle how little mistakes actually make it into print considering how much newsrooms have shrunk and the immense pressure we work under to put out the best possible product week after week.

At TygerBurger, copy from 10 journalists as well as sports, entertainment and property contributors finds its way onto the pages of 14 zoned editions – from planning each page separately to subbing and final proofing every single article and copy thereof – within two days. That is a minimum of 100 news items (roughly 40 000 words) that has to be planned, double-checked and triple-checked before the 14 editions of the newspaper, which vary from 12 to 40 pages, can be put to bed. Many of our journalists also wear more than one hat – writing and gathering news from Wednesday to Friday, and then putting on a production hat on Monday and Tuesday.

By the end of day two of production the psycholinguistic hypothesis that the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole, starts to ring true and two letters that are swopped around, or the “h” button on your keyboard getting stuck, can easily be missed by tired eyes staring at a sea of words.

So yes, we have made our fair share of mistakes and so has many other publications – like a daily newspaper that misspelled the name of its CEO on the front page, or one of our sister publications that accidentally reported on Dildo (instead of Dido) Valley.

And yes, it is super embarrassing when you open the paper the next day and find that typo glaring back at you. However, we ask the “errorists” to remember we are human – so please keep us on or toes, but spare us the personal attacks. We put our hearts into giving you the best read possible every week.

To borrow a line from a former colleague: “If you were to look at our error rate (we’d confidently put it at less than 1%), we’re doing better than the airline industry”. – Cecilia Hume (Editor)

Justice system is failing us We can write and complain about crime in our country until we’re blue in the face (“Genoeg is genoeg”, TygerBurger 11 September), but the situation will continue to deteriorate until the police and the prosecutors get their acts together and work in unison.

There are too many reports of shoddy police work and uncaring officers – but let me hasten to add that our local Durbanville cops seem to be a cut above the rest – and when the cops do get it right, judges and magistrates often get it wrong, usually to the benefit of the criminals.

A case in point is the murder of an Eversdal woman by a friend of her son, as reported in the TygerBurger. In his infinite wisdom, the judge declined to impose even the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years. As a result, this killer could be back on the streets in a few short years. I am shocked that the prosecutor has not appealed this sentence. Of course, if we had a government that could get the economy off its deathbed, and appoint properly qualified, experienced and incorrupt persons to the justice cluster, that would also help matters.

Doodstraf ís die oplossing Met verwysing na die brief “Doodstraf nie die oplossing nie” van C.C. de Beer in TygerBurger van 18 September die volgende: In Suid-Afrika is die doodstraf noodsaaklik.

Sommige moordenaars en

verkragters moet permanent uit die samelewing verwyder word. Rehabilitasie van sekeres is nie moontlik nie.

Lewenslange tronkstraf is nie wat dit sê nie en na parool gaan die skuldige weer moor en verkrag.

Die doodstraf sal gewis geweldenaars afskrik as hulle weet dit is hul voorland.

Teenstanders van die doodstraf het nog nie aan eie lyf die pyn gevoel na ’n gewelddadige aanval op ’n familielid nie.

Die Stad Kaapstad onderhou meeste van die tyd nie meer woonbuurte se sypaadjies nie, die inwoners doen dit. Hoe los ’n mens die probleem op?

Stad se somme klop nie Eiendomsbelastingkorting vir die boekjaar 2019 ...

Graag wil ek dit onder die aandag bring van eienaars wat aansoek gedoen het vir die herwaardasie op eiendomme wat te hoog gewaardeer is.

Ek het aansoek gedoen dat my waardasie moet hersien word. Hulle het toe my eiendomswaardasie verlaag met R15 000 – van R1 230 000 na R1 215 000.

Dit beteken ek moet nou belasting betaal op die nuwe waardasie van R1 215 000 minus die eerste R300 000 van jou eiendom se waarde, wat die Stad Kaapstad aangekondig het ons nie belasting op gaan betaal nie.

Groot was my verbasing dat hulle my eiendomswaarde na R1 215 000 verlaag, maar toe trek hulle die R15 000 weer af van daardie R300 000 waarop ons veronderstel is om nie belasting te betaal nie – dit verander dus nou na die eerste R285 000. Enige mens wat ’n bietjie rekenvaardig is kan sien die Stad Kaapstad verneuk ons!

Na ’n naweek van rondry is my bakkie se een voorband beskadig.

Ek het dit met die spaarwiel omgeruil en verlede Woensdag (11 September) het ek by High Q in Brackenfell ingery om die stukkende band te laat herstel.

Die wiel moes daarna weer gebalanseer word en dit is teruggeplaas op die bakkie.

Die tegnikus het aan my gesê hy is nou klaar en ek het na die toonbank gegaan om te betaal. Met my geld in my hand het die vriendelike persoon agter die toonbank vir my gesê dis gratis, ek kan maar ry. Ek was uit die veld geslaan, maar hy het volgehou dat dit ’n klein werkie was en dat hulle dit vir my sommer gratis gedoen het.

Nadat ek almal bedank het, het ek met ’n groot glimlag met my Hilux uitgery.

Ek wil net my diepe dankbaarheid teenoor High Q in Brackenfell uitspreek.

Daar is darem nog ondernemings wat die pensioenaris in ag neem met ewigdurende stygende pryse rondom ons.

Music academy gives hope LISA LOTTERING @demilottering

T

he Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy, which began in 2013 with one student receiving informal music lessons in a living room, today tutors 170 students.

Trevino Isaacs, principal of both the academy in Mitchell’s Plain and the Kraaifontein Academy of Music, grew up in New Woodlands.

The academy, which tutors students from the northern and southern suburbs, aims to train, educate and empower those that do not have the means to pay for training at established institutions. Its mission is to provide high-quality yet affordable music tuition to all students.

“We want to give the community hope with one vehicle being music,” he said.

According to Isaacs, the high demand for lessons necessitated a move to a bigger space. “Lessons are now offered at Woodville Primary School,” he said.

Isaacs said they started out teaching piano, drums and the base guitar.

Students come from as far as Tokai, Heideveld and Ocean View to attend the academy. “We expanded to the northern suburbs about a year and a half ago to accommodate more people,” Isaacs said. “Students from Brackenfell and Parow attend lessons at our branch in Scottsville, Kraaifontein.”

He said although many people still don’t know about the academy in Kraaifontein, awareness is growing.

“We are all about working in the communities and are there to shed light on music,” he said. Isaacs is self-taught and started playing instruments at the age of nine.

He also studied classical music at Stellenbosch University and has a diploma in financial management from the Stellenbosch Business School.

Besides the art of playing a chosen instrument, the academy also teaches students what it means to be a musician from a business perspective.

Dié boetiekbier is nie net lekker nie ...

D

aar’s ’n paar woorde in Afrikaans wat net nie ’n eweknie in ’n ander taal het nie: soos “lekker” en “moer”.

Nou’t ’n slim entrepreneur ’n sakeonderneming van dié woorde gemaak en dit sommer gepatenteer ook!

Neels Kleynhans, eienaar van die Moerop-Als-produkreeks, het onlangs sy sakeryk uitgebrei en ook sy eie bier laat brou, wat nou op winkelrakke pryk.

“Ek’s mal oor bier,” vertel Neels. “En net soos met my eie sous, wou ek ook graag my eie bier ontwikkel.”

Sy paaie het gekruis met dié van Johann Baker, eienaar van South Cape Breweries in Mosselbaai, wat sonder aarseling ingestem het om vir Neels sy eie bier te brou.

Dié brouery vier vanjaar sy sewende bestaansjaar en is die tuiste van Glenhoff-boetiekbier.

“Hy’t die potensiaal in die handelsmerk raakgesien en my gevra wat my gunstelingbier is. Toe sê ek Castle Light en Lion Lager.

“Toe brou hy vir my die perfekte bier ... en ek’s vol nonsens!”

Om alles te kroon word die bier volgens die Reinheitsgebot gebrou en bevat dit geen preserveermiddels en chemikalieë nie.

“Moer Lekka-bier is ’n kuierbier wat nie anders begin proe ná die tweede een nie. En dis glad nie bitter nie,” vertel Neels.

Johann Baker het vir Neels sy droombier gebrou. Hier spog die twee met die heel eerste bottels Moer Lekka-bier.

Die terugvoer tot dusver was nog net positief. “Almal wat proe sê: ‘sjoe dis lekker ... nee, dis moer lekker.”

Neels doen alles self, van die bemarking

tot die verspreiding, en sê hy’t vroeg-vroeg besef persoonlike aandag is die sleutel tot sukses. “Dis hoekom my selnommer op die etiket is. Ek wil hê mense moet my kontak

en terugvoer gee.” ’n Gehalteproduk is ewe belangrik, só ook die handelsmerk.

“Ek’s trots Afrikaans en Suid-Afrikaans.

Dis in ons DNA om te braai. En braai en bier en kuier is perfekte pasmaats,” vertel Neels.

Danksy ’n goeie netwerk wat hy oor die jare opgebou het, het Neels daarin geslaag om die nasionale kettinggroep Spar te oortuig om sy bier te verkoop.

“Dis nou by sekere Tops-winkels in die Wes-Kaap beskikbaar en hopelik ook binnekort landwyd,” sê Neels.

Neels se reis as entrepreneur het as fotograaf begin – ’n fotograaf met ’n reuse-liefde vir braai.

Toe hy nie ’n braaisous na sy smaak op die winkelrakke kon kry nie, het hy sy eie gemaak – eers in sy kombuis, later in sy motorhuis en nou in ’n fabriek.

Hy’t dit Moer-op-Als (MOA) genoem want dit was vir hom so lekker, hy’t dit op alles gegooi. Neels het intussen ook ’n MOA-klerereeks begin.

“Ek’t net weereens besef hoe belangrik ’n sterk handelsmerk is. Die lekker ding van MOA is dat Afrikaanse mense nie sommer die naam sal vergeet nie. Die naam breek onmiddellik die ys,” skerts Neels.

Dié strooitjie geen strooi-storie nie DESIRÉE RORKE

“Ons gebruik verskillende basisse vir die drie reekse – gelatien vir die gewone strooitjies, plante vir die streng vegetariese reeks en vrugte vir die gesondheidsreeks. Die streng vegetariese strooitjies met ’n bessiegeur verkoop baie goed. Ons het ook framboos- en sjokoladegegeurde strooitjies.”

Die terugvoer van die studente-klante was so positief dat Siljeur nou beplan om haar produksie te verhoog om aan sakeondernemings op Stellenbosch en in ander dele van die land te kan verskaf.

“Ons wil een groot bondel aan verskillende ondernemings verkoop. Ons ideaal is om ons strooitjies aan groot kitskoskettings soos KFC en McDonalds en ook gesondheidswinkels te verskaf. As ons aan hierdie soort kettingwinkels kan verkoop, behartig hulle die verspreiding en sodoende raak dit nie die verbruiker se sak direk nie.”

Met hierdie uitvindsel het sy R50 000 in die onlangse Allan Gray Orbis Stigting Nasionale Jamboree losgeslaan en werk sy tans saam met die US se Consulting Society en Accenture in Kaapstad om ’n klein onderneming te begin.

“Ons is tans in die proses om industriële masjinerie vir groter produksie te ontwerp,” sê sy. “Ek glo die produk kan wêreldwyd bemark word, maar vir eers gaan daar gefokus word op die plaaslike mark.”

In ’n vorige onderhoud met prof. Peter Peter Ryan van die marienebiologie-departement van die Universiteit van Kaapstad, (“Oceans drowning in plastic” TygerBurger 20 June 2018) word daar beraam dat daar sowat vyf miljard stukke plastiek in die wêreld se oseane ronddryf, met Suid-Afrika op die top20-lys van wêreldbesoedelaars.

“Strooitjies vorm deel van die ‘dirty dozen’, ’n term wat verwys na die 12 plastiekprodukte wat die meeste op ons strande gekry word,” sê hy.

Volgens Ryan kan plastiekprodukte tussen 400 en 1000 jaar vat om te af te breek.

anksy die pogings van ’n student by die Stellenbosch Universiteit (US) om verbeterde eetbare strooitjies te ontwerp, staan seelewe ’n beter kans om behoue te bly vir die nageslag.

Nadat sy ’n inskrywing op Facebook gesien het oor ’n seeskilpad met ’n plastiekvurk in sy neus, was Leila Siljeur, ’n tweedejaar chemiese ingenieurswese-student (19), so diep geraak dat sy besluit het om aksie te neem om plastiekbesoedeling te bekamp.

Sy het omgewingsvriendelike strooitjies ontwerp en op kleinskaal aan medestudente begin verkoop.

In ’n onderhoud met TygerBurger sê Siljeur dié foto het boekdele gespreek en haar genoop om aksie te neem.

“Ek was nog altyd passievol oor omgewingsvolhoubaarheid maar het nooit besef hoe ons plastiekafval die oseane benadeel nie. Dit het my diep geraak,” sê sy.

Siljeur neem ook deel aan verskeie strandskoonmaakprojekte wat haar tot die besef gebring het dat die krisis handuit ruk.

“Strooitjies is so klein, maar dit is skrikwekkend om te sien hoe vinnig dit ophoop en hoe nadelig dit vir ons seelewe is”.

Volgens haar word sowat een biljoen plastiekstrooitjies daagliks wêreldwyd gebruik.

Die geregistreerde handelsnaam van Siljeur se strooitjies is Eat Me Straws en bestaan uit drie reekse – gewoon, gesond en vegan.

Die voordeel van hierdie strooitjies is dat hulle nie pap word wanneer jy dit in ’n vloeistof sit nie. Siljeur glo dit is ’n verbetering op die ander soortgelyke strooitjies wat verkoop word.

“Hoewel maatskappye bio-afbreekbare strooitjies vervaardig, beland baie daarvan nog steeds in die see en hou ’n gevaar vir ons seelewe in,” sê sy.

Die tekstuur van haar strooitjies is ’n mengsel van droplekkers (liquorice) en gedroogte vrugte.

“Aan die begin van die ontwerpproses het ek met verskillende bindingsmiddels rond-

gespeel omdat ek nie ’n taai strooitjie wou hê nie. Die strooitjie kon ook nie die smaak van die drankie beïnvloed nie,” sê Siljeur.

“Die strooitjies kan gekleur en gegeur word volgens ’n klant se spesifikasies.

Engines to rev at Killarney Raceway Start your engines for the fourth annual Killarney Motor Show, at Cape Town’s home of motorsport, Killarney International Raceway, on Sunday 27 October.

The organisers are taking the revs up again with close to 1 300 vehicles on show and more than 100 stalls selling just about anything you can think of for your car – and your tummy, with a huge variety of watering holes serving ice-cold drinks, sit-down eateries and takeaway vendors.

Antiheld keer terug in ‘Vloek’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

“H

ou die vlugsout reg,” het die resensent Jonathan Amid oor Rudie van Rensburg se jongste misdaadroman, Vloek, geskryf.

Dié roman, wat skitterende resensies gekry het, is op Donderdag 19 September by The Daily Coffee Café in Willowbridge bekendgestel.

Bettina Wyngaard, die wenner van die Jan Rabie Rapportprys, het by die bekendstelling met Van Rensburg oor sy nuwe spanningsverhaal gesels.

Die hoofkarakter in die boek is Carl Bester, ’n enigmatiese en aantreklike gevalle oudspeurder wat lesers leer ken het in Van Rensburg se debuutroman Slagyster. Die boek eindig waar Carl landuit vlug ná hy geld gesteel het waarop daar in ’n dwelmsaak beslag gelê is.

In Vloek is Carl terug. Ná ’n dekade word hy skielik gevrywaar van vervolging. Hy kan terugkom Suid-Afrika toe, maar teen ’n prys: hy moet ’n saak van internasionale belang help ontrafel – ’n saak in die Moederstad wat met lyke besaai lê.

“Ek het altyd geweet ek wil weer vir Carl terugbring, maar dit was blote toeval dat hy terug is in Vloek,” sê Van Rensburg.

Lynn Rudolph is raising funds for her studies in England.

alented musician, Lynn Rudolph refuses to give up on her dream of doing her master’s degree in England – she’s been organising fundraising concerts, taking out study loans and working very long hours to make it happen.

Lynn, who lives in Kraaifontein, was accepted to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to further her studies. The challenge is to raise enough money to pay for her flights, accommodation, additional living costs and a portion of the tuition fees.

Lynn, a music graduate from the University of Stellenbosch, attended a live audition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in November last year, where she played the viola.

She was immediately accepted into the master’s programme.

According to Lynn, the scholarship only covers 70% of the tuition fee.

Since receiving the good news, Lynn has been working tirelessly to make sure she raises enough money to realise her dream.

She has already taken out two loans to secure her spot.

“I need to raise about R92 000 more before I leave. I cannot expect my almost retired father to use his last earnings on funding the trip as it is their (and her mother’s) only income,” says Lynn.

She says studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire is an opportunity not to be missed. She’ll be attending the conservatoire for two years.

The opportunity came at a time when she was at a crossroads with her career;

“I have always dreamt of this (completing her master’s overseas) but knew I’ll never be able to afford it without a scholarship. I have been passionate about music since the age of six.

“It is creative and a form of expressing yourself. You always learn something new,” says Lynn.

She hopes to gain tons of experience while studying overseas, which she wants to plough back into the community on her return home.

She’s very grateful to her friends, who have been assisting her with her fundraising efforts and Lynn says “they’ve been doing a good job so far”. Thanks to their help, Lynn has already raised around R60 000, which excludes the proceeds from the past weekend’s concert.

B’fell a magnet for young families B

rackenfell has become one of Cape Town’s top performing residential areas, highly sought after among a younger generation of home buyers.

New shopping malls, coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, schools and convenient medical facilities abound, all set within a leafy suburb with an abundance of open spaces, providing a magnet for young families and creating an ongoing demand for residential accommodation.

“This is evidenced by the fact that notwithstanding the slowdown in house price inflation being seen in many parts of the city’s residential property market, over the past decade prices of houses and sectional title properties in Brackenfell have almost doubled,” says Keimpe Weistra, Pam Golding Properties’ area principal for the suburb.

He attributes the solid performance of this relatively new suburb – Brackenfell was only established in 1913 – to its comparative affordability as well as the emergence of business and industrial nodes in the area.

“Brackengate business park and the completion of the new Haasendal Village Square has stimulated commercial activity in the area, and created more jobs. The knock-on effect has been the expansion of Brackenfell’s housing market, as more young families and first-time buyers move into the area,” explains Weistra.

Brackenfell also offers a range of school options, making it appealing to young families. With primary and high schools offering English and Afrikaans tuition, Brackenfell has broad appeal. With Stellenbosch in close proximity, this suburb is equally attractive

to buyers thinking about tertiary education.

With easy access to the R300 and the N2, as well as the N1 if commuting to Cape Town central, Brackenfell is well located.

However, as the trend to work remotely from home or from shared working spaces gathers momentum, more buyers look to enjoy the benefits of living in the northern suburbs without having to commute in traffic congestion to the city centre. Hope on the horizon for landlords

After 18 months of minimal growth, landlords may not be feeling particularly optimistic about their rental investments.

However, the latest PayProp Rental Index shows trends may finally have ceased its downward trajectory. Jacqui Savage, national rentals manager of the Rawson Property Group, says this is good news for landlords, but not necessarily a sign of a market turnaround yet.

“Rental growth over the last six months has been virtually flat,” she says adding that the first quarter’s 3.85% increasing to 3.86% in the second quarter of this year may not seem particularly positive for landlords, “but when taken in con-

text with moving average trend lines dating back to 2017, it shows the first reliable sign of an end to the national rentals growth decrease”.

While a flat trend line is unlikely to get anyone’s pulse racing, Savage says the majority of rental assets are still delivering solid returns over the long term.

“It’s easy to overlook the fact that we had long periods of higherthan-inflation rental growth as recently as 2017,” she says. “In order to remain sustainable, these periods of high growth need to be balanced by slower growth to maintain tenant affordability.”

With consumer purchasing power under heavy pressure as a result

of high unemployment, prolonged below-inflation income growth and increasing living expenses, tenant affordability has, indeed, become an issue. Reports indicate weakening tenant credit metrics, despite relatively stable credit scores, and an increase in the frequency of tenants in arrears.

This, Savage says, has made it essential for agents and landlords to implement stringent vetting procedures for all tenants and, ideally, repeat these processes on lease renewals. “It’s this balance that landlords need to keep in mind when times are tough,” says Savage. “In order for rental growth to recover, tenant affordability needs to recover too.

How to add charm to a vacant property When selling your home, should you show it “as is” with all your furniture and belongings in place, or wait until it is empty so prospective buyers can see the actual size of the rooms?

“Strangely enough, buyers generally react better to homes that are occupied and furnished – because that helps them to visualise how they might live there themselves,” says Gerhard Kotzé, managing director of RealNet. “In an empty home, they often have trouble making sense of the layout or working out whether their furniture and appliances will fit into certain spaces.

“A home that has been empty for some time could also come across as neglected and cold; and an overgrown garden, dusty floors and dirty windows are likely to add to that impression.”

He says this is why developers will often go to the expense of furnishing a show unit.

“Even if the furniture in the show house is not what potential buyers like, it gives them a feel for what goes where, and whether the size and layout of the units would suit them.”

However, home-owners will sometimes find themselves having to sell an empty property – possibly after a tenant has

moved out – so here are some helpful tips for giving it some extra appeal: . urbanville and DF Malan High schools were placed third and fifth overall in the Western Cape finals of the 2019 Spur Schools MTB League and will be competing in the national finals this week.

Kenridge won the primary schools division.

The Western Cape wrapped up an exciting 2019 Spur Schools Mountain Bike League (SSMTBL) season with a record number of 1025 entries.

Host school Paul Roos Gimnasium continued their winning streak of the past 11 years and walked off as the winner in the boys and overall categories with a seasonal total of 1985 points. This victory was spearheaded

by Ben Puddu, who ascribes their success to the absolute commitment from the riders and the fact that mountain biking is accredited as an official school sport at Paul Roos Gimnasium. “We have consistently developed the sport over the past 11 years and have managed to build great depth in the team with 30 new intakes signing up for mountain

biking this year”, said Puddu – a teacher at the school and keen mountain biker himself.

Another league stalwart, Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West finished second overall with 1155 points with the boys placed second and the girls finishing in fourth position. Durbanville High School took the third slot in the overall competition with 808 points with their boys third on the podium and their girls team placed fourth.

Rhenish Girls’ High School showed great consistency this year and won the women category of the Western Cape leg with 237 points followed by HTS Drostdy in second with 157 and Durbanville High School in a close third with 155 points.

Filling the fourth to tenth slot overall were HTS Drostdy, DF Malan High School, Montana High School, Hermanus High School, Rhenish Girls High, SACS College and Curro Hermanus. The boys’ teams from HTS Drostdy and DF Malan have also qualified for the national finals.

et die onverwagte maklike oorwinning van 36-7 wat Durbanville-Bellville op Saterdag 21 September in die halfeindronde van die Presidentbeker-klubrugbykompetisie oor die Universiteit van Kaapstad behaal het, het die Durbies ’n dubbele slag geslaan.

Nie alleen sou Durbell gister, op Erfenisdag, in die eindstryd van die topafdeling teen die Maties te staan kom nie, maar as die voorste nie-universitêre klub sal hy nou ook vroeg aanstaande jaar weereens die WP-verteenwoordiger in die nasionale Goue Bekerkompetisie wees. Die uitslag van die Presidentbeker-eindstryd was met druktyd nog nie beskikbaar nie.

Die klub Valsbaai, wat saam met Durbell in die wedloop was vir deelname aan die Goue Beker-kompetisie, het in die ander halfeindstryd met 21-26 teen die Maties vasgeval. Saterdag in die halfeindstryd teen die Ikeys het sake aanvanklik nie heeltemal na wense verloop vir die Durbies nie.

Hulle is lank in hul eie halfgebied vasgepen, maar danksy goeie benutting van hul puntekanse het Durbell met rustyd met 15-0 voorgeloop.

Wat die Kraaie des te meer die hoenders in gemaak het, is dat hulle nie vooraf deur die WPRU hiervan in kennis gestel is nie.

Hoewel Scottsdene met sy sege van 44-18 in die ander halfeindstryd sy plek in die eindstryd bespreek het, was dit weens die debakel met die Hands & Heart-wedstryd met druktyd onduidelik wanneer die eindstryd in die C-afdeling sou plaasvind.

UCT triumphant in intervarsity tournament Hundreds of students braved the weekend’s inclement weather to attend the annual Western Cape Intervarsity games hosted by Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) at their Bellville campus. The tournament saw CPUT, the University of Western Cape (UWC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (US) and Varsity College putting each other through their paces in sports such as soccer, basketball, water polo, table tennis, badminton, fencing, ultimate frisbee and tennis.

The chilly and rainy weather disrupted outdoor codes such as cricket, netball, beach volleyball and tennis. Last year’s overall champions, US relinquished their title to this year’s champions, UCT, who won the event, scoring 50 points.

Stellenbosch was second with 45 points and UWC came third with 30 points.

CPUT, which dominated soccer as both their men’s and ladies’ teams won the finals, came fourth with 26 points and Varsity Col-

lege fifth with 13 points. The tournament started in 2016 and was held at UWC, while CPUT hosted it for the first time this year.

CPUT sports and culture manager, Siyabulela Mkwalo, said: “I am very excited with what we achieved today despite the bad weather. We are disappointed that we had to cancel some sporting codes. Overall, I am happy we have achieved the strategic objectives of the event which was to create a platform for the students to have fun and enjoyment. The best team won, although the tournament was not about winning but participation,” said Mkwalo.

CPUT men’s soccer team captain, Bongumusa Mbali, said winning the soccer section of the tournament can open doors for them and hopes that the CPUT management will increase their support for the team. “I’m very grateful for the guys that played and those who didn’t play for the support we got both from the CPUT team and other teams,” said Bongumusa.
