TYGERBERG RACEWAY: RACING COMMUNITY DEVASTATED
Where to from here? DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzie
T
he destruction of Tygerberg Raceway during violent protests has left competitors and spectators in oval dirt track, or stock car racing as it is also known, utterly shocked and saddened. The first race of the new season was set to take place on 26 August, with the first practise run on 8 August, a week after all the amenities at the track were burnt and torn down to the ground by protesters. Known as the fastest, longest and broa-
dest oval racetrack in South Africa, stock car enthusiasts flocked to the club since its opening in the late nineties. In the more than two decades that followed, the club nurtured two generations of talented sportsmen at club, regional and national level. In 2013 the club bought the rights to Oval Dirt Racing to become the official promoter of the sport in South Africa. Reigning club champion Jacques du Plessis Jnr (20) from Brackenfell says the destruction of the raceway has not only left him with uncertainty in the sport but
has wiped out a legacy for everyone involved in the club; some 100 members and their families. “We could not believe the bad news. I was speechless and overwhelmed with sadness. I grew up next to that raceway, watching my father and uncles compete “Many a Sunday in my childhood was spent first on my mother’s lap on the stands and later behind the wheel when I took up the sport at the age of 16 along with my cousin Jean-Pierre du Plessis, also a multiple club and SA champion,” he says in an emotional interview with Ty-
gerBurger. “My entire family is involved in the sport, either as racers or spectators.” With the new season starting in less than two weeks he is uncertain as to where he and other club members will continue to race. “At this stage we have the option to race either on the track at Worcester or Saldanha, but it will never be back on our home track”. Dad, Jacques Snr, also a former club champion, says this is a loss for the sport. V To page 5
