arents of learners at Bloekombos Secondary School have raised their concerns over the alleged corporal punishment of learners.

According to *Lindelwa Nonti her daugh-

ter was punished for arriving late for school last Wednesday.

“My daughter came back home crying because she was hit for being late for school,” she says.

“This is not the first time she has told me about being hit at school. The last time it was over homework not being done,” she ex-

plains further.

Nonti says her daughter had asked her to change schools but she cannot afford it.

“If I could take her to another school I would, but there are other factors like transport to consider.”

Another parent, *Thandiwe Payi, says her daughter often does not want to go to school.

ie Wes-Kaapse departement van gesondheid het in ’n verklaring gesê die Covid-19 virus-geval wat in Parow aangemeld is, is vals. ’n Leser het verlede Vrydag die TygerBurger gekontak en ingelig dat pasiënte by die Parow-gemeenskapskliniek in Smithstraat glo gesigmaskers dra.

Volgens haar was daar ook ’n pasiënt by die kliniek die betrokke dag wat per ambulans na ’n hospitaal vervoer is, glo omdat die persoon met die Korona-virus besmet is.

DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Nadat die eerste geval verlede Donderdag in Suid-Afrika bevestig is, het onsekerhede rondom die plaaslike protokol vir die diagnose van die gevreesde koronavirus (Covid-19) in dele van Kaapstad paniek gesaai. ’n Sakeman van Parow het glo verlede Maandag ná ’n maand uit Suid-Korea teruggekeer, waar tot dusver 5 328 gevalle bevestig is en die dodetal op 516 staan.

Die man besit ’n winkel in Voortrekkerweg. “Hy was die volgende oggend dadelik weer terug in sy winkel sonder ’n gesigmasker. Ek was onder die indruk dat hy twee weke in kwarantyn moes wees; ons is dus baie bekommerd hieroor,” sê ’n vrou van Vredekloof, wat nie haar naam bekend gemaak wil hê nie.

“Klante gaan in sy winkel in en kom daarna na ons winkel,” vertel die vrou, wat die winkel langs hom besit.

“Sy personeel het ons vertel dat hy as gevolg van die virus in Suid-Korea juis gesukkel het om dié land te verlaat en hy glo ’n dokter duisende moes betaal om hom gesond te verklaar.

“Almal in die straat is bekommerd en het hom al gebel om te hoor of hy getoets is, maar met sy gebroke Engels is dit moeilik om hom te verstaan,” sê sy.

Rhynhardt Bresler, raadslid vir Vredekloof, het die kwessie met die Stad Kaapstad se gesondheidsdepartement bespreek om duidelikheid te verkry.

In ’n skrywe aan Bresler het die epidemioloog Natacha Berkowitz gemeld dat alle reisigers wat in Suid Afrika aankom uit lande wat deur Covid-19 geraak word, vir hoë koors getoets word. “As die persoon positief toets vir koors, sal verdere ondersoek by die lughawe gedoen word.

Die koorstoetse is nie 100% akkuraat nie, maar is steeds ’n effektiewe metode van

haal.

In ’n verklaring wat Saterdag uitgereik is, blyk dit dié gerugte is onwaar.

“Die vermoedelike geval wat gister (Vrydag) in Parow opgespoor is, het aanvanklik ooreengestem met die definisie van ’n Covid-19-geval, gebaseer op die persoon se inligting.

By verdere ondersoek is bevind dat die persoon nie aan die kriteria vir Covid-19 voldoen nie en dat hy nie getoets hoef te word nie. “Ons vra die publiek om nie die virussituasie vir persoonlike gewin te misbruik nie, aangesien dit lei tot die misbruik van hulpbronne en onnodige paniek,” lui die verklaring.

Dr. Zweli Mkhize, nasionale minister van gesondheid, het verlede Donderdag aangekondig dat Suid-Afrika sy eerste ge-

Volgens Berkowitz is daar geen rede om die persoon in kwarantyn te plaas as hy gesond is, geen simptome van die siekte toon nie en nie in nabye kontak gekom het met iemand wat die virus het nie. “’n Gesigmasker word net aanbeveel vir mense wat hoes en by wie die virus reeds bevestig is,” sê sy in ’n skrywe aan Bresler. “As die persoon tans gesond is en geen simptome toon nie, vermoed ek die risiko dat hy die siekte opgedoen het en aan ander kan versprei, is baie klein.”

Discovery Health het egter sy lede gewaarsku om eerder internasionale reise te vermy na enige van die lande wat hierdeur geraak word. Indien dit nie moontlik is nie, word reisigers gemaan om hul gesondheid fyn dop te hou tydens hul reis en tot 14 dae ná die tyd. Daar word ook sterk aanbeveel dat reisigers uit lande soos China en Suid-Korea hulself twee weke lank isoleer, al voel die persoon gesond en toon hy geen simptome nie.

Aankomspunte Op advies van die departement van gesondheid het die Lughawensmaatskappy van Suid-Afrika (Acsa) maatreëls op al drie internasionale lughawens verskerp om die verspreiding van Covid-19 op te spoor, te bestuur en te voorkom, volgens Mpumi Mpofu, die uitvoerende direkteur van Acsa.

Die parlementêre portefeuljekomitee vir gesondheid het Donderdag ’n oorsiginspeksie by die O.R. Tambo Internasionale Lughawe in Johannesburg gedoen.

Maatreëls by die internasionale aankomssaal sluit immigrasie- en deurgangsgebiede, sowel as isolasiefasiliteite, in vir passasiers wat simptome toon.

Hierdie maatreëls is bykomend tot die voortgesette sifting wat deur Suid-Afrikaanse Hawegesondheid (land, see en lug) by aankomspunte gedoen word.

Waak teen stereotipering Die Nasionale Instituut vir Aanmeldbare Siektes (NICD) het verlede week gewaarsku teen die stereotipering van mense wat die virus het. “Stigmatisering kan veroorsaak dat mense hul siekte wegsteek en gesondheidsorg vermy om diskriminasie te vermy. Dit kan lei tot probleme met die identifisering en beheer van die verspreiding van Covid-19,” lui ’n verklaring. “Aangesien Covid-19 ’n nuwe siekte is, is dit te verstane dat die moontlike invoer daarvan na Suid-Afrika verwarring, angs en vrees by die algemene publiek kan veroorsaak.”

Gereedheid Die Wes-Kaapse gesondheidsdepartement het verlede week in ’n mediaverklaring bevestig die provinsie het ’n 72-uurgereedheidsplan in plek gestel sóú enige gevalle in die provinsie bevestig word.

Die departement doen ’n beroep op inwoners om hul plaaslike gesondheidsdienste (privaat of openbaar) te nader as hulle onlangs besoek afgelê het aan een van die lande wat geraak word en simptome toon wat ’n skielike hoë koors, hoes, seer keel en moeilike asemhaling insluit.

As ’n pasiënt aan die kriteria voldoen, sal die standaardprosedure wees om die persoon vir assessering te isoleer.

Die fasiliteit sal dan die viroloog by Tygerberg- en Groote Schuur-hospitaal kontak vir die nodige toetse.

Die toetse sal hier gedoen word, maar aangestuur word na die Nasionale Instituut vir Aanmeldbare Siektes, die enigste laboratorium wat die Covid-19 virus kan bevestig, het die verklaring gemeld.

orthpine residents are feeling unsafe in their homes.

This comes after a 75-year-old man was killed in his home during load shedding in January.

Since then, a group of four residents have started to patrol Denesig Way and Conifer Close, two streets that are easily accessible via Old Paarl Road.

The area is also said to be prone to house breakings in recent years.

“My house was broken into quite a few times in the last few years. Our safety is compromised,” says one of these residents.

“Safety is our main concern, people can easily enter the area,” says another patroller.

“We do have security in the area, but they

are based close to the filling station. We do not understand why they should be there where there is a lot of foot traffic whereas the people here need them more.

“The security company does patrol the area, but it is a long time before they come around again.”

He says the problems are caused by a flow of foot traffic and the lack of sufficient street lights. “The area is dark, the street lights are far apart from each other. One cannot even walk the streets after dark.”

To ease their safety concerns, the four patrollers suggests that fencing be put up along Old Paarl Road.

“This would take some worries away. The open space here could be used as a park,” the third patroller said.

The four men do this voluntarily.

“We are doing this for the safety of the community. We want everyone living here

to feel safe in their homes,” says the fourth.

With the implementation of load shedding, more residents have been fearing for their lives.

“I sleep with the lights on and I panic at every sound I hear at night, this is not the way to live,” a woman who stays in Conifer Close says.

“Our environment has become unsafe. I don’t know how long we have to live like this.”

Since patrolling the area, the four men say things have become better.

“We do not have suspicious vehicles and individuals roaming the area anymore. We have also advised residents to change their routines if possible in order to confuse potential criminals.”

The identities of the four men are known to TygerBurger, but are being withheld due to safety concerns.

Teen missing at Table View beach KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels A 15-year-old boy was reported missing at sea on Saturday 07 March after allegedly getting into difficulty while swimming.

He was reportedly swept out to sea by rip currents before disappearing in the surf line.

Despite an extensive search from authorities, there was no sign of the Kraaifontein boy.

According to Peter O’Hanlon, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melkbosstrand station commander, the NSRI Melkbosstrand duty crew were activated at

18:20 on Saturday 07 March, following reports of a drowning in progress at Table View beach.

“NSRI Melkbosstrand launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Brenda and Film Industry Fund Rescue 2. NSRI Table Bay duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Day. A Big Bay Lifesaving lifeguard rescue craft was launched and NSRI rescue swimmers, City of Cape Town, Big Bay Lifesaving lifeguards, the EMS and AMS Skymed rescue helicopter, law enforcement officers, Cape Town fire and rescue services and the police responded,” O’Hanlon said.

Provincial education’s director of communications Bronagh Hammond says the allegations levelled against the school are concerning.

“The South African Schools Act and the National Education Policy Act clearly bans corporal punishment in our schools.

Learners are encouraged to report abuse.

Corporal punishment shall, by implication, be regarded as an act of assault. Therefore, any form of assault on a learner is considered illegal,” Hammond explains.

Through the school’s code of conduct, Hammond says schools should state clearly what kinds of behaviour is unacceptable.

“Should a learner transgress, the school has the right to discipline the learner. The

Biker dies after collision A 39-year-old man was killed on Monday morning when his motorbike crashed into the side of a bakkie in Cecil Morgan Road, Brackenfell.

An ER24 paramedic was on his way to work when he came across the incident.

The bakkie and motorbike were found in the middle of the road. “ER24 and Titanium medics assessed the biker and found that he had sustained numerous injuries, and was in a critical condition,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring. Several advanced life support interventions were applied before he was transported to Tygerberg Hospital.

At hospital the man’s condition deteriorated, Meiring said, and despite further advanced life support interventions, he was declared dead. Details surrounding the incident are still being investigated.

She mentions that there are alternative ways schools can discipline learners without using corporal punishment.

L

ike any other aspiring performer, 16year-old Raphaelle Davids plans to become the best stage actress there ever was.

Her love for performing developed in primary school when she took dance classes.

Fast forward six years later, the Grade 11 learner from The Settlers High School had been involved in a number of stage productions including Gavin Wright’s Flag of Freedom.

“I have had a passion for the arts my entire life.

I started dancing in primary school, but I stopped a few years after that,” Davids explains.

She returned to the stage when a drama programme was introduced at her primary school.

“I came home one day and told my parents about my new-found passion and they were supportive from that moment.”

“I have since managed to use my dancing, acting as well as singing talents to go on stage.”

Getting to high school, Davids did drama for two years before quitting it in Grade 10 to take information technology (IT) as a subject.

“I could not take both IT and drama, so I had to sacrifice one, which was drama.”

Her stint with IT was short-lived when her passion for the arts grew

because this was my first international trip. For the first few days we had training, which was interesting, because I interacted with actors from other countries who gave me a lot of advice,” she explains.

The next few days were filled with competitions.

“I was signed up for a lot of competitions, so I did not have time to do anything else,” she says.

“As soon as I was done with an audition, I had to run to the next. It was intense, but I enjoyed it, so I did not find it overbearing at all.”

By the end of the convention, Davids had received 12 callbacks from international casting agencies and medals for her performances.

She says performing gives her a sense of adrenaline that is unexplainable.

“My parents tell me that I have this adrenaline rush that is unexplainable after performing.”

Davids says having a supportive family is important to up and coming artists because it boosts their confidence.

“Having someone who believes in you makes it easier to deal with the pressure and more determined to succeed.”

Looking to the future, Raphaelsees herself starring in big productions where she can use her skills to tell stories.

Raphaelle Davids plans to perform on the biggest theatre stages in the world.

“I dropped IT shortly afterwards and took on art again.”

Davids’s dancing has seen her performing at the Artscape with the help of her teacher.

She has also performed at the International Presentation of Performers (iPOP) in Las Angeles, a semiannual convention for market-ready talent and participants.

No fines on overdue library items for a week During South African Library Week, patrons will be able to return all overdue library items without getting a fine, the City said in a statement.

Library Week will be held from 16 to 22 March and different libraries will offer programmes celebrating their services.

During this time, library patrons can also return books for free, no questions asked.

Previous fine free weeks linked to major calendar events such as South African Library Week and National Book Week have proven to be effective in getting overdue library items back. A total of 32 224 items were returned last year.

Unfortunately, the total “lost” materials for the previous year was 45 537 items with a replacement value of over R4m.

Should someone wish to extend the due date on a book or a movie, they can renew the item in person or by telephone.

There are currently 96 000 library

items that are overdue for more than two weeks while about 12 000 are overdue for two months.

“We would like to encourage residents who have books that are overdue to make use of this opportunity. Reading is a wonderful experience that all residents should have access to and we need to ensure that books are returned so that other patrons also have an opportunity,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. .The top 10 libraries with the most outstanding items are: Central Library, Bellville Library, Mobile Library, Claremont Library, Town Centre Library,· Weltevreden Library, Rylands Library, Somerset West Library, Gugulethu Library and Durbanville. .The top ten overdue items at libraries across the City of Cape Town are: Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Mathematical literacy Grade 12, and Dog Days.

Arts networking in Durbanville ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

T

he establishment of a Durbanville art route by the organisation Artist Network, is one step closer after a meeting held on Thursday 27 February at Rusten-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville.

At the meeting Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, curator of Rust-en-Vrede Gallery and Clay Museum, made several suggestions, such as a networking event for local artists to get to know each other, movie nights where art movies will be screened, as well as workshops to teach artists skills.

“We need you to take ownership and become involved in the project for it to be a success. We need people to help us,” Jansen van Vuuren said. About 40 artists – mostly from Durbanville, but also as far as Stellenbosch, Table View and Hout Bay – attended the meeting.

One artist also suggested a support group, offering artists advice and how to communicate with each other and how to promote their work.

Another suggested that a Facebok page be started only for art in Durbanville, where people can post art related news and news about exhibitions.

Heidi Ansley of Piet-my-Vrou Mosaic Art Studio in Durbanville said it is time that artists in Durbanville work together and focus on public open spaces to exhibit their art and beautify the town.

Revalle Beaton, a teacher at Creative Arts Atelier, said: “We cannot create in isolation, but need interaction, especially when it comes to group exhibitions.”

Jansen van Vuuren requested the artists to help to organise events and workshops.

“If everybody works together, we’ll see what we can do. It is up to you to use that platform and take part,” she said.

Jansen van Vuuren said Durbanville needs a tourist map, indicating all the sites of interest and heritage sites, as well as art centres.

A map was designed two years ago, but the City of Cape Town declined to fund the project.

Art competition open for entries Vuleka, meaning “open” in isiXhosa, is a competition initiative of the Arts Association in Bellville.

Says Anne Wells of Art.b Gallery: “Vuleka was established by Art.b Gallery in 1963, making it the oldest continuous art competition in South Africa. Celebrating its 58th birthday this year, the competition is aimed at inspiring creativity and artistic vision amongst emerging and established South African artists. It’s open to all artists who have not held a solo exhibition in the past three years, are South African citizens and 18 years or older. This important event is without a doubt the barometer for the future of art in our region.”

According to the historical records of Art.b, the competition has drawn entries from now prominent artists over the years including William Kentridge, Sue Williamson, Christo Coetzee, Pippa Skotnes, Andries Gouws and

many more. “The popularity of this competition is growing rapidly. Last year the competition drew close to 300 entries of which a selection of 67 works were on display at the gallery,” adds Wells.

Entries are open and those interested can visit www.artb.co.za to obtain the forms.

The winners will be announced at the exhibition, which takes place from 19 August to 11 September this year. Entry fees are R120 for members and R150 for nonmembers.

Wells concludes: “We want to give artists the opportunity to showcase their work, introduce them to a culturally diverse creative platform, obtain positive publicity and receive a financial reward to pursue their artistic careers.”

ith the sweltering weather in February comes the spectacular flowering of tropical plants.

With its strappy leaves and exotic flower buds, the Spider Lily, Hymenocallis or Tropical Giant, takes centre stage in Rocco Bonafede’s garden in Vredekloof.

“It is a very tough and resilient plant. I have had it for 13 years, but it only started flowering a few years ago. It now flowers every year in a flush of intricate white flowers. The white buds are abundant and opens overnight,” he says.

Bonafede says he hasn’t seen this plant in many gardens and is curious as to how pop-

ular it is in local gardens.

According to gardening writer Arno King at Garden Drum, Hymenocallis is a genus of some 70 species with a broad range.

“The name Hymenocallis means ‘beautiful membrane’. They have a long flowering period and at times are so smothered in flowers you can hardly see the foliage.

“Flowers open in the evening emitting their perfume overnight and generally last two to three days.”

King says the species is believed to have originated in the Caribbean and is now presumed to be extinct in the wild. “This in itself is a really good reason for gardeners to grow it in cultivation,” he says.

Hierdie eeue oue versugting is vandag steeds teenwoordig in die harte van ouers wat die welstand van hul kinders voorop stel. Hoe sal die weë wat my kinders bewandel gelyk en sonder kronkelpaaie bly? Wat kan ek doen om te verseker dat die onvermydelike aanslae van die lewe nie so fel is wanneer dit my kinders tref nie?

Ek wil glo dat alle ouers elke dag met hierdie vrae worstel en hoop en bid dat hul bloedjies die doolhowe van die lewe suksesvol navigeer.

My ma het volwasse kinders en sy bekommer haar steeds oor ’n ieder en ’n elk. Sy sê sy slaap baie aande onrustig oor haar kinders, wat ook reeds ouers is.

My laaitie is deur ’n skoolmaatjie gelak by die skool en het sy arm gebreek. My ander klong het by die skool geval dat hy flou geword het. Hoewel ek weet kinders speel rof en die kans dat hulle mekaar kan “Wanneer seermaak is goed, was dit vir het ons my ’n terugslag en het ek gevoel gemeenskappe ek het die ontaard in hierdie kinders gefaal.

As hulle soggens uit die huis uit gaan, sit ouers met daardie hoop dat die mense in wie se sorg hulle is na hulle sal omsien. Jy plaas al jou vertroue in die skoolbusbestuurder, die onderwysers by die skool en die nasorgfasiliteit, sportafrigters en koorleiers – feilbare mense, maar mense wat jy hoop dieselfde oor jou kosbare kinders gaan waak.

Ek sit hier en skryf oor gebreekte arms en blou kolle teen die gesig, maar regoor die land is daar vandag ouers wat hulle dalk self verwyt oor hulle nie in die laaste oomblikke daar was nie. Hul kinders is op die wreedste moontlike manier van hulle af weggeneem. Ek kan my net indink watter verwyte gaan deur daardie ouers se koppe. Moes ek nie maar eerder saam winkel toe gestap het nie? Was ek maar by daardie basketbalwedstryd vanwaar my seun weggelok is om vermoor te word.

Hierdie ouers het niks gedoen wat bygedra het tot die dood van hul kinders nie, want al is daar diegene wat sê “maar die kind moes nie alleen winkel toe gegaan het nie”, beteken dit nie iemand het die reg om ’n onskuldige kind te vermoor nie. Wanneer het ons gemeenskappe ontaard in hierdie wrede wêreld waar kinders nie net kinders kan wees nie? As dinge so aangaan, sal ons later nie eens meer ons kinders wil skool toe stuur nie, want ons lees in die media hoe kinders by skole doodgesteek word.

Ek dink ons kan almal saamstem dat die wêreld wreed is en dat ons soms magteloos is teen die dinge wat gebeur.

Soms voel ons soos toeskouers by ’n rugbywedstryd wat net in afgryse kan staan en toekyk hoe ons span deur sy teenstander verneder word. As ouers lewe ons met die vrees dat iets met ons kinders kan gebeur. Elke dag.

Hoe kan ons hierdie vrees oorkom?

Deur daardie ouers te wees wat ons kinders só grootmaak dat hulle nie grootmense word waarvoor die wêreld moet bang wees nie – grootmense wat kinders seermaak of vermoor nie. Die wêreld makeer nuwe leiers, kom ons maak hulle groot. – Brenden Ruiter

Please regulate this fishing In response to your article “To fish or not to fish” in TygerBurger of 26 February, just the following.

As Kaapstad Varswater Hengelvereniging, we have been in conversation with the City of Cape Town around the angling issues in Cape Town for almost a year now.

In the past we had very little response in this regard, except for the ward councillor meeting with us, to address these issues.

However, after submitting a written petition to the ward councillor of the Durbanville area, we now had the head of environmental services, parks and recreation contact us this week.

Fishing at the dams is considered to be illegal and for this reason it can’t be regulated. We as anglers wish for these activities to be regulated so that an incident like the bird getting caught in traces should never have happened.

Other issues we also like to address is the unsocial behavior, sanitation law enforcement and many more, for which we have great solutions.

At this stage we have no proper angling waters in Cape Town available. Like other sports and recreational activities, we also are entitled to have a place to take part in our favourite pass time, but it is impossible. If you, the citizens of Cape Town, wish to ban our activities, then cycling and marathon running on public roads should also be banned as they are much worse for the environment, with plastic pollution on huge scale ending up in our water resources.

The incident with the bird and fishing line, traces, and

hooks lying all over is not acceptable. This is done by a small number of people and from the angling community, we also wish to get rid of these people. They cause us problems at private dams as well. The only way to get this done is to regulate angling and give people proper guidelines.

Doordekraal Dam is not a dam suitable for normal bank angling and is mostly used by the specimens anglers, who’s got a different kind of fishing style to the normal angler. It is also not safe for families to go fishing, as people have been robbed there recently.

Please note that most of us are nature-loving people.

Geluk aan museum se Ken Botes Ek wil graag kommentaar lewer oor die artikel “Walvismuseum ’n besoek werd” (TygerBurger, 4 Maart).

Ek wil Ken Botes gelukwens met die mylpaal wat hy bereik het en dat TygerBurger die geleentheid raakgesien het om die walvismuseum te besoek en ’n uitmuntende artikel oor die ontstaan van die museum gepubliseer het.

Om te dink dat ’n enkele persoon (met geloof) so ’n nie-winsgewende instansie alleen met baie stampe en stote en baie, baie geduld en insette tot stand kon bring.

Ongelooflik!

Ek dank TygerBurger en al die donateurs, die munisipaliteit en die mense wat saam met hom die pad geloop het om ’n sukses van die museum te maak. Soos Nelson Mandela gesê het, “Nothing worth having comes easy”.

The complainant needs to lodge a complaint with the City’s air quality management unit and we will investigate the matter and serve notice of the offender where evidence confirms the illegal activity. We respectfully respond to Rev Isaac’s allegations in the article “Parents Fear Cult” of 26 February (TygerBurger). He is a Christian leader whose ministry to broken families and public comments on restoring families we admire.

He claims we alleged he went to Mauritius “all expenses paid”. Our brochure mentions “pastors” (no names) were invited to Mauritius “all expenses paid”. In our minds, he was never included. He claims he has investigated CTMI and that our bitter allegations are unfounded. We ask how this is possible without the courtesy of contact with us, the source of the allegations? And morally judge us as “bitter” without even meeting us? We wrote to him personally in 2019 and predicted that, when questioned, CTMI would respond exactly as he has now done.

Seemingly, investigations were only with CTMI. He claims “being born again for 51 years, there is absolutely nothing true about what Keith Brown (CPG) is saying”. This is a wild, sweeping and false allegation!

How we wish that our experience of shattered families, where children and grandchildren are cut off from loving parents and grandparents, was just a figment of our imagination! And many common testimonies on our website are all lies?

CPG members and supporters in reputable churches and Christian institutions are also born again. If born again parties have different claims – surely the only way to find the truth is open discussion?

We challenge Rev Isaacs, to verify his unfounded “nothing true” allegation. If successful, we will publicly apologise.

Stop signs mean STOP I’m a 63-year-old pensioner from Ruyterwacht and very concerned about how motorists drive in my town.

Mostly everyone here are licensed drivers.

My concern is that the bulk of drivers do not obey the stop signs. They drive right over it without stopping at all. There is no regard for any pedestrians and it is dangerous. We need traffic officers to come and monitor the lawless drivers and fine them.

Kinderhuis soek hulp met projekte Die Durbanville-kinderhuis het die nuwe jaar begin met ’n hele klomp planne om die lewe vir die kinders in sy sorg op te kikker, maar benodig die hulp van weldoeners.

Van die projekte sluit in om drie personeellede as voertuigbestuurders op te lei.

“Die kinders woon tans 39 verskillende skole by, wat groot vervoeruitdagings meebring. Die koste om een persoon bestuurslesse te laat neem, die koste van die lisensie ingesluit, beloop sowat R3 500,” sê

Johanna Strauss, bestuurder van bemarking en fondswerwing.

Daar word ook gesoek na donasies van heel “retainer blocks” of bakstene om ’n braai vir die kinders te bou. Roosters en mooi buitestoele is ook baie welkom, asook buitebanke en enige tafels waarby die kinders kan sit en eet. Die kinders gaan ook van 23 tot 29 Maart by Onrusrivier kamp en benodig ’n klomp items.

ie afgelope ope dag van die Durbanville Seniors Hub (DSH) was ’n reusesukses met meer as 30 nuwe lede wat op die dag en daarna aangesluit het.

Veral die oefenklasse was baie gewild en ’n groot trekkrag vir nuwe lede, sê Marina Jansen, voorsitter van die DSH. Die ope dag is op 28 Februarie in die Durbanville Lions se klubhuis in Queenstraat gehou. Alle aktiwiteite word ook daar aangebied.

Die DSH is te midde van dié sukses egter ook op hete kole oor of hulle in die toekoms nog die perseel sal kan gebruik, aangesien die Durbanville Lions se huurooreenkoms met die Stad Kaapstad einde Mei verstryk.

Buiten die Durbanville Lions en DSH, gebruik ook die Tygerberg Hospies en Alkoholiste Anoniem die klubhuis.

Daar is ’n moontlikheid dat die Stad ná 37 jaar nie sy huurooreenkoms met die Durbanville Lions gaan hernu nie, maar die perseel dalk gaan toeken aan MES, ’n organisasie wat straatmense ophef, om ’n dienstekantoor daar te vestig.

Volgens Theresa Uys, raadslid, is die verstryking van die huurooreenkoms deel van ’n normale proses en verval twee organisasies se huurooreenkomste in wyk 112 nou – ook dié van die Durbanville Scouts.

“Dit is deel van ’n voorgeskrewe proses waarin alle partye gelyke reg kry op die huur van fasiliteite,” het sy gesê.

Mense kon beswaar aanteken en die periode hiervoor het op 23 Februarie verstryk.

Volgens Uys het subraad 7 nog geen terugvoering ontvang oor hoeveel besware ingedien is nie.

Intussen gaan die DSH voort om sy dienssentrum tot einde Mei in die klubhuis te bedryf.

“Ons beoog om twee weke voor die einde van ’n maand reeds die volgende maand se program beskikbaar te stel sodat lede kan bespreek vir spesifieke aktiwiteite,” het Jansen gesê.

“Die seniors het sommer lekker gekuier en al die uitstallings besigtig van toekomstige projekte wat aangebied gaan word op Dinsdag-, Woensdag- en Vrydagoggende. Daar was groot belangstelling in die oefeninge wat Dinsdae en Vrydae aangebied gaan word, spesifiek vir seniors om te voorkom dat hulle val.

“Dit sal enige senior tot

Daar word op Woensdag 18 Maart ’n kunsprojek deur Penny Jansen van Vuuren aangebied oor hoe om ’n teesakkie-skinkbordjie te maak.

Op Woensdae om 12:00 word gesonde, gebalanseerde etes aangebied, waar lede gesellig saam kan eet. Hierdie etes moet twee dae tevore bestel word. Ledegeld beloop slegs R150 per jaar.

ie Durbanville-tak het omtrént koning gekraai by die jaarlikse konferensie van die Vrouelandbouvereniging van Kaapland (VLVK) se Tygerbergsirkel.

Nie net is die tak aangewys as die een met die meeste punte nie, maar Marieta Lourens is ook aangewys as die lid met die meeste punte.

“Ons is in ekstase,” vertel Ester de Bruyn, takvoorsitter. “Ons het lanklaas gewen.”

Vanjaar het net agt takke se lede oor die Tygerberg-streek heen die 53ste konferensie in die NG kerk Bellville-Vallei bygewoon.

Die landswye tema van die VLVK is “Belê in vroue” en die gasspreker, die joernalis Elize Parker, het beklemtoon dat vroue weet wat hul waardes is en wat hulle motiveer.

Soos gebruiklik het die lede aan ’n

verskeidenheid kompetisies in onder meer tuisteskepping, naaldwerk en kuns deelgeneem.

Die konferensie is deur die Parowtak gereël, wat ook vanjaar sy 85ste verjaarsdag vier.

Maretha Bester, voorsitter van die Parow-tak, sê sonder haar lede sou hulle nie die dag ’n sukses kon maak nie.

Dié tak is uitsonderlik omdat dit net een van twee bestaande takke is waarvan die lede saans bymekaar kom. Die lede is dus meestal werkend en baie moes verlof neem om by die konferensie te help. Die ander “aandtak” is De la Haye.

Konferensiegangers het hulde gebring aan Anna Bindemann (80), wat etlike jare Parow se voorsitter was en vroeër die week verjaar het. Sy het die konferensie in haar rolstoel bygewoon en kan nie meer sien nie.

By die kongres het 19 sirkels (wat uit verskeie takke bestaan) van oor onder meer die Kaap, Kimberley en die Karoo byeengekom.

Die Tygerbergsirkel het by dié kongres, wat in November by die Goudini Spa gehou is, die prys ontvang vir beste naaldwerk en kuns.

Hulle is ook aangewys as die sirkel met die meeste punte.

“Dit is dus belangrik dat hulle ook saam met vriende en nuwe kennisse kan kom ontspan,” sê Lawson.

Die jaarlikse Art Bizarre is die afgelope naweek weer in die Tygerberg-kunssentrum geopen.

Die geleentheid, wat die werk bekend stel van die leerders wat daar klas loop, is Vrydagaand gehou.

Art Bizarre is tans in sy vyfde jaargang.

“Die motivering hiervoor was om leerders en ouers bymekaar te bring in ’n ontspanne omgewing om mekaar beter te leer ken; om entrepreneurs die kans te gee om hul produkte te verkoop, sowel as om geld vir die kunssentrum in te samel,” sê Greg Lawson, woordvoerder.

Elke jaar word ’n spesifieke tema aan die geleentheid gekoppel. Hierdie jaar was dit “maskerade”.

“Ons het gevra dat almal wat die geleentheid besoek ’n masker as ‘toegangsgeld’ dra.

“Dit maak dat die geleentheid ’n feestelike atmosfeer het. Ons het ook ’n parade waar almal hul maskers ten toon kan stel en het dan ook pryse vir maskers in verskeie kategorieë,” sê Lawson.

Almal moes hul eie maskers maak.

Ongeveer 500 leerders neem aan die uitstalling deel. “Daar is ’n kunswerk van elke leerder wat by ons ingeskryf is, uitgestal.”

Die leerders is so jonk as vier jaar tot en met matriek. “En selfs van die leerders se mammas.”

Lawson sê besoekers aan die uitstalling kan verwag om iets van alles te sien – van tekeninge tot skilderye, plak-skilderye, montage, fotografie, illustrasiewerk, teks­tiel en mode, sowel as keramiek, grafiese en drukkuns, juweliers- en driedimensionele kunswerke.

Die kunsuitstalling duur tot en met Joshua de Villiers probeer die gaste die die aanbreek van die skoolvakansie.

ames Marais and Monique Cassells are bringing their Old School Country Legends show to Die Boer theatre on Saturday 28 March at 20:30.

The duo is known for their Oldies but Goldies and Elvis: From Memphis to Las Vegas shows, which have brought them continued well supported performances at Die Boer over the years.

In 2017, they successfully launched their Old School Country Legends tribute, and now they are bringing it back to Die Boer. Monique, who has gained widespread praise for her powerhouse voice and performances, as well as her versatility, shows her capabilities as a country singer, with tributes to top artists such as Patsy Cline (“Crazy”), Tammy Wynette (“Stand By Your Man”) and Dolly Parton (“Nine to Fife”). Monique made her television debut on “Musiek Roulette” in 2018.

James and Monique are a powerful duo and perform some wonderful duets in the show by artists such as Johnny Cash and June Carter (“Jackson”), and Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton (“Islands In the Stream”), as well as songs not originally performed as a duet, such as Merle Haggard’s “Somewhere Between”.

Africa’s only improv festival starts today The Mama City Improv Festival is on from today (Wednesday 11 March) until Sunday 15 March at 44 on Long in the city centre.

The Festival, now in its 4th year, promotes improv comedy – a hilarious, spontaneous theatre experience with shows and workshops over five days.

With nights filled with side-splitting shows, and days packed with workshops, the festival is an intensive learning experience for beginner and advanced improvisers, local and international, to immerse themselves in improv comedy – experiencing the magic of it all coming together on stage, as a performer or audience member.

International improvisers from the UK, Canada, and the USA – together with Cape Town’s talent, will be performing and teaching this spontaneous, unscripted style of

theatre. There are two shows daily at 19:00 and 21:00 from Wednesday to Saturday. The festival will finish off with The Maestro Improv show on Sunday at 18:00.

The historic venue, 44 on Long, has been beautifully restored. There is as a bar, and food and snacks will be on sale.

Good conditions for cyclists W

indless and cool conditions greeted over 30 000 cyclists who took on the 42nd Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday 8 March.

While the wins were taken by Cherise Willeit – who won her fifth women’s title – and 20-year-old Travis Barrett in a dramatic men’s sprint, the story was of the thousands of cyclists that followed them home.

Among the finishers was premier Alan Winde, who completed his 13th tour, and former Springboks Breyton Paulse and Corné Krige.

Only in the late afternoon did the wind begin to blow but, by then, most of the field was on the home stretch towards the finish in Green Point.

“It was a near-perfect day for riding and the spectators out on the route made this year’s Cycle Tour all the more special,” said Cape Town Cycle Tour director, David Bellairs.

“The support of the community along the route, in particular in Masiphumelele, was extraordinary and this is what makes this race special.

“To the riders, chapeau! Thank you!”

Willeit, who admitted to not having had the ideal build-up and even suffering from a stomach issue earlier this week, survived early attacks from British triathlete Emma Palant to narrowly outsprint Frances Janse van Rensburg from a lead group of 12 riders that broke away up the infamous Suikerbossie climb. Willeit finished the 78km women’s elite route in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 48 seconds.

“Every win at the Cycle Tour is special but this was a tough one. My legs were cramping during the sprint. It was a long sprint into a headwind and I must have kicked five times in the final 500m,” Willeit beamed.

The women’s race was characterised by early attacks and surges that started with Palant. The British rider attacked within 2km of the start and was only reeled in by the group at the top of the Smitswinkel climb.

As the race turned towards Chapman’s Peak, Palant was part of another breakaway of three that included Yolandi du Toit and

Melissa Kretzinger. But all, except Palant, were pulled back by the bunch up the famous climb before it came together in Hout Bay. Up the crucial Suikerbossie climb Willeit, Catherine Colyn and Kretzinger attacked and dragged a group of six over the top. Over the final 15km the lead group swelled to 12 but Willeit proved her class in the final 100m. Janse van Rensburg finished second and former trail runner, Hayley Preen, was third.

Willeit has won the second most titles among the women at the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Anriette Schoeman has won the event seven times and finished in the chasing bunch.

In the men’s race, in-form Barrett upset some of the big sprint favourites to nudge out former winner Clint Hendricks by the width of a tyre to finish in 2:30.04 for the 109km. The two were part of a lead group of 15 that broke away up Chapman’s Peak and held their lead over the second bunch to the finish. Capetonian Jayde Julius grabbed third.

“It was a very long sprint and I could sense Clint coming up beside me. But I held on.”

Barrett said. “I still can’t believe it. Winning the Cycle Tour is what every rider dreams of.”

Barrett has been in superb form of late with wins on the Gauteng circuit and during the recent Tour of Good Hope, and is rapidly becoming one of South Africa’s brightest young stars.

Softball KO finals beckon NOORE NACERODIEN Westridge Yankees’ recent form in the women’s super league of the Cape Town Softball Association and the recent defeat of Lavender Hill against Glenthorn A’s, has set the scene for an exciting end to the season.

While Yankees was on a break the past weekend, Lavender Hill disposed of Kenfac Phillies with a 6-2 victory.

This brought Lavender Hill level with Yankees on 42 points.

The two teams meet in the grand finale of the league competition, set for 18:00 on Saturday 14 March at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The winner also has an added opportunity for the coveted double when the two teams meet again on Sunday in the knockout (KO) final.

All five of Yankees’ teams will be seen in action in the KO on Sunday 15 March.

The women’s major league team can

add the KO trophy to their league title when they face Table View Tornados.

In a weekend of many possible doubles, First League champions Glenthorn A’s face Khayelitsha Eagles and Silvertree Titans, the second league winners, hope to do likewise when they play Table View Tornados on Sunday.

Yankees face Khayelitsha Superstars in the third league KO after annexing the league title.

Not to be outdone by their club-mates, Yankees’ men also have a chance to clinch the potential double when they play Hamiltons in the men’s major league KO final. The double is dependent on the outcome, not known at the time of going to print, of the league game played last night between Khayelitsha Eagles and Hamiltons. A Hammies victory will seal the league for Yankees. The Yankees’ second league men’s side face Heideveld Yankees in their final.

More than 5 000 runners for Century City Sports Fest Runners at the 12th annual Century City Sports Festival worked up a sweat when they hit the road for the 5km and 10km run last weekend.

This year’s race attracted more than 5000 runners with Discovery Vitality as the race sponsor for the third consecutive year.

The race started off just beyond Intaka Island and circled wide around the boundary of the precinct, past Canal Walk and back again with the finish line at Central Park.

Runners of all ages and fitness levels enjoyed the fun of the 5km and more serious runners attempted to improve on their personal bests with the fast and flat 10km. Various running clubs participated including the local Century City Athletics Club, Tygerberg, Bellville, Khayelitsha, Langa and various universities and corporate teams.

There were 3 798 participants in the 10km race that crossed the finish line and the 5km runners totaled 1 018.

First over the 10km finish line was 24-year old, Anthony Timoteus, from the University

of the Western Cape, in a time of 30:43. He won a R10 000 cash prize, a R3 000 Canal Walk voucher and a Discovery Vitality gift pack. Hot on his heels was 40-year old Mbongeni Ngxazozo from Rockies who charged in at 30:59. Third fastest was Vuyolethu Mbukushe, 29 years, from Atlantic Athletic Club in 31:06.

The ladies were led by 32-year old Fortunate Chidzivo from Retail Capital Langa who finished with a super speedy 32:53.

The 25-year old Kyla van Graan from Murray & Roberts WP finished with 35:28 and Paige Mackenzie, 19 years old from UCT was in third place at 36:09.

The fastest veteran (70+) was 71-year ‘young’ Henry Cleophas from Nedbank Running Club, who blazed through with a finishing time of 48:31. The fastest of the ladies was Diana Thomson, 73-years young from K-Way VOB with 56:41.

The less serious 5km was more of family affair and the top 10 runners were dominated by youngsters.

Erinn Ewerts (51), Quinton Dreyer (48), Siya Simetu (4/19) en Shabir Mallie (3/11) was die uitblinkers teen Bellville, terwyl Romano Ramoo (80), Givon Christians (52), Dreyer (40) en Simetu (5/14) die pap dik aangemaak het teen Victoria.

Zenzekai claim medal haul at championships: Zensekai Karate Club in Kraaifontein competed at the United World Karate Federation South Africa, Western Cape Karate Championships on Saturday 29 February. Seven karatekas took part and the club won 10 medals - three gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
