Off to see Obama ANDRÉ BAKKES “Where were you when the inauguration of the President of the United States took place?” Most South Africans would probably shrug this question off and answer: “In bed!” They will convince themselves that they wouldn’t really want to be part of some president’s induction in some other country. Yet, if they were given the chance to experience this historic event they would grab it with both hands. Third year student at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Bianca Marinus (23), can’t wait! She has been “critically selected” and invit-
ed to attend the presidential inaugural conference in Washington, DC in January next year. Marinus had to raise a substantial amount of funds to cover her costs and during a fundraiser in Bothasig in September she did just that. The presidential inaugural conference is a unique leadership development programme that brings together outstanding young people from around the world to directly participate in the pageantry and ceremony of the inauguration of the president and vice-president of the United States. She glows with pride when she says: “As a young South African female to be receiving this opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime experi-
ence and to be representing my country, is a great honour to uphold!” This A-aggregate student is active on many fronts – she is a career guidance practitioner, a Sunday school teacher, and a Golden Key International Honour Society member. Golden Key, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), has “chapters” at about 390 universities across the globe and only the best achievers are invited to belong to it. It’s responsibilities centre around community outreach programmes. A handful of representatives of this NPO is selected to attend the inauguration and Marinus heard in June that she will be one of them. “I was shocked!” she laughs. V To page 2.

VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1 She accepted the invitation without hesitation, but the funds needed for such a trip were a problem. That’s when she decided to hold a fundraiser in the Bothasig Community Hall. With the help of ward councillor James Vos and 250 guests the gala event was a smashing success. With their help she has now purchased her ticket and will be flying on 20 December, to attend the inauguration in the middle of January. “Now the anxiety and excitement really starts to set in,” she adds. The bright-eyed Milnerton resident has no doubt that by attending this programme in America, it will greatly assist her in becoming a teacher of influence – immersed in a global perspective. “This will be a powerful experience, and enable me to interact with many prominent men and women whom most of us only read about in the news,” she says. Since community service is her passion she is convinced that this experience will stand her in good stead.
She reasons that she will learn how to be more persuasive and strategic, which would equate to getting more people to help her in community outreach projects. She concludes emphatically: “For all those

BEE ‘threat’ to NGOs withdrawn The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced last week that the new BEE codes of good conduct have been withdrawn. The proposed revisions would have severely impacted on Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that do not have 100 % black beneficiaries. Quick cops get two more guns off streets Quick reaction time by two Goodwood police officers resulted in the arrest of two suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms last week. According to W/O Wayne Theunis, spokesperson for the local police, the two officers reacted to a radio complaint. He elaborates: “At about 04:30, Consts Craig Rautenbach and Steven Drury of the Crime Prevention Unit heard over the radio of suspicious men in Hugo Street. They rushed to the scene, and as they approached they saw two men walking
away.” Then Drury identified himself as a police officer and ordered the men to stand still, but they apparently ignored him. Theunis continues: “The suspects walked past a tree and both of them dropped something under it. At that time Morné Veldsman of Swart security approached the men from the other side. The suspects were stopped and taken back to the tree, where two 9mm Star pistols were found.” One pistol was apparently stolen in Wynberg in 2002.

Goodwood Museum to get a well-deserved revamp REYANA STEYN Stepping into the Goodwood Museum and seeing a variety of exhibitions and artwork will soon be a new experience for visitors – now that a revamp will be kicking off soon. After 18 years of existence the museum will receive a wonderful upgrade next year, which will focus on displaying the history of the entire northern suburbs. The museum officially opened its doors in May 1994 as a little house museum situated in Church Street. Initially it depicted only the history of Goodwood, but the main reason for this up-

grade is for it to be more inclusive of the northern suburbs. “Exhibitions are outdated and there have been demographic changes in our communities,” says Clive Justus, chairperson of Subcouncil 4. “The upgrade will involve fiscal changes to the building, but no facade changes because of its historical value.” During the years some changes have been made to the museum and special attention was given to John Olsen’s gramophone exhibition. “Olsen’s collection will still play an important role in the museum. Currently we are busy with the de-clutte-
ring process,” says Justus. “The furniture from Stellenbosch museum which was on loan was given back and some of the items will be going into storage after packaging.” Manager of Arts and Culture for the City of Cape Town, Zayd Minty, invited Josette Cole (historian), Josh Thorn (exhibition and designer) and Pippa Skotnes (Art UCT) to help them re-design the museum. Ria Briers, curator for Goodwood Museum, says she is looking forward to the revamp. “It is long overdue and the public will appreciate it, as it is part of their area’s history which will be displayed.”

Right to safety constitutional ANDRÉ BAKKES The Western Cape division of the Salvation Army in Goodwood held a fun run on Saturday in support of World Aids Day and the 16 Days of Activism against abuse of children and women. After the five kilometre run, which was in actual fact more of a “walk”, people enjoyed an open air praise and worship concert. Along with about 160 people, Subcouncil 4 chairperson, Clive Justus, and local ward councillor, Cecile Janse van Rensburg, also attended the event. Neville Hitchcock, liaison officer of the Salvation Army elaborates: “It was a successful and exiting event. This is the first time that we do something like this, but we are hoping to make it an annual event.” The procession of caring participants ended up at the Salvation Area parking lot
after the walk where they were treated to some traditional and spiritual dances by children from Cape Town. Hitchcock says events such as these make a difference as to how women and children are treated, but he warns that there is still a long road to walk. “Abuse is still perceived as a domestic issue, so no one ever wants to get involved. Even the police will stop by the front gate. If someone is abused then they should report it to police, or if they don’t want to then they should at least come to an NGO such as the Salvation Army for support. Their issues will always be treated in confidence.” Justus concludes: “The rights of women and children are fundamental human rights entrenched in and protected by the Constitution. Gender-based and child violence, in all its different forms, devalues human dignity and the self-worth of the person and must be stopped in our society.”

Reality of Aids strikes home The Provincial Health Department commemorated World AIDS Day on Friday at the His People Centre in Goodwood. Approximately 1 000 guests, ranging from high profile dignitaries to youth of Cape Town attended. A video of pre-recorded youth engagement sessions and extracts thereof formed part of the production to show the magnitude of the topic. The underlying aim of this video is to get young adults “to get to know the problem and know the response” and to commit to a means of providing better support to young people to help protect themselves against structural determinants of bad health outcomes. Professor Craig Househam, Western Cape head of Health, said: “Globally South Africa has the highest number of HIV-infected citizens, namely 5,6 million within the total population of this country. The infection among young women is disproportionately high and within the age group of 20 to 24 years their risk is four times higher than the general population.” Twelve engagement sessions were held
during the run-up months to World Aids Day where responsible adults were exposed to the realities of youth vulnerability. The intention was to get them to understand youth issues and ultimately understand how the youth would like to access services. This included how the youth experience substance abuse, interpersonal violence and attention from older men and women (so-called sugar mommies and daddies). Researchers working on these issues were invited to do presentations on their findings on the impact of these social problems on the youth. It served as a “safe space” where the youth could be heard rather than spoken to by government authorities. Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, concluded: “The province’s goal to achieve zero HIV infections by 2016 can only be achieved in partnership with government, citizens, civil society and business. It is only in co-operation that we can ensure that infected people are placed at the centre of the health system and treated according to individual needs and circumstances.”

Thank you for support and loyalty Can you help brave It is difficult to believe that 2012 is drawing to a close. In a few days, this year will just be a thought, but unfortunately not all of us will be able to forget because people’s lives were touched in many ways – positively or negatively. Crime is one of the things that impacted people’s lives. The reduction in crime can be attributed to the hard work of my police members and the strong partnerships that we built within our community. The roles of the Goodwood Neighbourhood Watch and the Community Policing Forum have been incredible. The enthusiasm and dedication in fighting crime jointly with the police goes far beyond recognition. Watch members have sacrificed their time and energy supporting the police in every effort to fight crime. The police have also worked closely with other law enforcement agencies and managed to get excellent successes during this year. Information sharing at different levels internally
and externally has also contributed to effectively combat crime, make arrests and enable good convictions in courts. The focus on effective detection and convictions is high on our list of priorities. The festive season is a time for family, friends and good times. I want to urge you to be security conscious, read your crime prevention hints and take care of your family, especially children during this period. While you shop, be cautious of the cash you carry. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, be aware while doing business banking. Special attention should be given to your children and the prevention of sexual abuse. Activate your alarms when you leave your residence and businesses. Ek is moeg van al die lelike dinge wat in die voetpaadjie langs ons huis aangaan. Ek het al ’n verklaring afgelê by die polisie en was al by die hoërskool, wat om die draai van ons woonplek is. Maandagoggend om 17:10 hardloop mense in die voetpaadjie en skreeu: “I’m going to kill you!” Die voetpaadjie is so gevaarlik, want hulle hardloop deur verskillende voetpaadjies. Die kinders kom party keer van ander areas om dié nonsens aan te jaag. Die voetpaadjie is nie ’n veilige plek nie en dit moet toegemaak word. Dis net een groot nagmerrie. Ek vra ouers om met hul kinders te praat oor die soort van ding. Dis regtig nie nodig om op mure te krap en verkeerde dinge in die voetpaadjies te doen nie. On Sunday evening 25 November, Kelly-Jane Hart (23) and Clyde Lewis (25) of Bothasig spotted a homeless man abusing a puppy on the N1 City Bridge. When they tried to rescue the tiny labrador, the homeless man proceeded to strangle her in front of them – so forcefully, she began to vomit. Luckily the brave young couple managed to extract the traumatised puppy from him and took her home. Only five weeks old, much too young to be away from her mother, little Bella continued to suffer from severe vomiting and diarrhoea over the next few days. Kelly-Jane and Clyde took her to Bothasig vet, and blood tests revealed that she had a virus called Parvo. After staying at the vet overnight, it was discovered that Bella Bella the labrador had severe has been given a complicasecond chance in tions in life. addition to Parvo that required a blood transfusion. Even after the transfusion and round-the-clock care, she only had a 10 % chance of survival. Bella is still weak and on a drip but doing much better. Kelly-Jane expects the little pup to be discharged later this week. The couple chose not to use local animal welfare services as they would have put Bella down due to the exorbitant costs of saving her. As students, they are now struggling to cover vet bills in the region of R10 000. The couple is looking for any donations to help cover Bella’s vet fees. Vyf grenadellabome dra geil ESMÉ ERASMUS ’n Inwoner van Durbanville is trots op sy spog-oes grenadellas van die vyf boompies wat hy skaars meer as ’n jaar gelede geplant het. Basie van Rensburg (69), ’n oud-vrugteboer, bly sedert 2006 in Obolstraat in Durbanville. Hy het op kleinhoewes in Noorder-Paarl met onder meer vrugte, druiwe en ook groente geboer. Voor dit was hy en sy vrou, Pat, vir 15 jaar die eienaars van ’n gastehuis op Witsand. “Nou het ek twee werke – ek werk in my tuin en ek werk vir die Here,” het hy gesê. Hy is veral in sy skik met die feit dat die bome twee oeste vanjaar gelewer het – die eerste in Julie en Augustus en die bome sit
nou propvol groen grenadellas met die tweede oes. Hy gebruik kompos wat hy self in sy agterplaas maak van afgesnyde kikoejoe-gras en wys trots die wurms wat hom met dié werkie help. Hy het ’n handvol van dié wurms, wat baie soos erdwurms lyk, maar net kleiner is, in die komposhoop gegooi. Volgens Van Rensburg is mense gaande oor die groot klomp grenadellas wat sy bome dra. “Mense stop in die straat om te kyk, of dié wat verbystap, pluk sommer van die vrugte af,” vertel hy. Hy het ook al ’n aftree-oord se inwoners laat kom kuier om van die vrugte te pluk. Hy het van sy eerste oes meestal grenadella-stroop gemaak. Tóg te lekker gemeng met koue water op ’n warm dag.

Carols by candlelight raise Rotary funds A carols by candlelight event is presented in the Avondale Gardens at 40 Protea Road in Durbanville on Sunday 9 December to celebrate the beauty of Christmas. The gates open at 16:30. The evening is the main fundraiser for the Tygerberg Rotary Club and all proceeds will be donated to local charities. This year’s programme and music will be
arranged by the Protea Valley Family Church and the Kenridge Dutch Reformed Church. The evening will tell the story of Christmas through song, music and drama. The Kingsmen drama ministry of the University of Cape Town will perform a drama The Innkeeper’s dilemma to tell the story of Jesus’ birth.

Popular 99er race returns to old routes Entries are now open for the Construction du Cap Ninety Niner cycle tour and MTB Challenge which will be held on 9 February 2013. Online entries open today for both the road races and the long distance mountain bike races. The good news is that now that the roadworks are complete, the 2013 race will return to the old routes of 2011. The long route is 108 km, while the shorter route is a comfortable 64 km. This will be the 15th 99er race and it has long been the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape, rated as a seeding event for the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. Cyclists can be assured that it will be a well-run event. This year the race won the PPA award for the most consistent fun ride for the past five years. As usual, the race leaves from the Durbanville Race Course, where there is ample parking, space for stalls and lawns for supporters to relax and enjoy the day while they wait for the prizegiving. Half of motorcyclists’ deaths occur in the Cape Town metropolitan area. Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works, expressed his growing concern at the ever mounting toll of motorcycle fatalities in the Western Cape. “While our overall road fatalities have declined dramatically by 28 % over the last three years, motorcycle deaths have actually risen by 11 %. All other categories, including cyclists and pedestrians have declined,” said Carlisle. The figures for October 2012 show that this alarming trend is on the rise with 12 motorcyclists dying compared with two in October 2011. “Over 200 motorcyclists have died on our roads in the last three years. In part this is due to the increase in the number of motorcycles, but too many motorists are not sufficiently alert to both cyclists and motorcyclists. At the same time, many motorcyclists ride at excessive speeds,” added Carlisle Carlisle also reported that road deaths on Western Cape roads in October had risen by 6 % when compared to the same month last year. The comparative figures are: October 2008 – 124; October 2009 – 115; October 2010 – 108; October 2011 – 101; October 2012 – 108.

Children a key part of home security Two of the most common ways unwanted visitors gain access to a property is when children are at home alone – especially over the forthcoming end of year holidays when their parents are at work and of course weekends. With many dual-income households, children commonly spend more time on a property on their own without their parents and yet often they are forgotten when home security planning is concerned. Chubb Fire and Security suggests the following: V Remember your children when planning for your home’s security, especially when they are at home alone or during weekend or holiday periods. V Many home burglaries or hold-ups occur because children haven’t been told what to do when this happens. V Children must never allow unannounced visitors onto the property. V Children should be taught how to answer a telephone or gate intercom without betraying the fact that they are alone. V Rather than acknowledging that their parents are away from the property, they should say that the required person is not available and ask the caller to leave a message. V On no account should a visitor be allowed onto the property unannounced or without their parent’s permission. VYour children should never be cajoled into going to the property’s gate to investigate an unannounced visitor. VYour children should know the location of your panic buttons, and more importantly, how to use them. If you have decided to invest in remote panic buttons, make sure your children have one at their disposal. VAn easily accessible list of emergency contact numbers such as you and your spouse’s work and cellphone numbers as well as those of the immediate neighbours, your security company, the police and other emergency services, such as the fire department, should be left near the home’s main phone. V Most children have cellphones – input these numbers into their phones and if they have the facility, show your children how to use the speed dial facility on their phone. V It is advisable and indeed necessary to frequently test any fixed or mobile panic buttons, but please advise your monitoring centre first. False alarms cost lives and to do this as a means of testing response times could cost a person their life.

Dít blyk uit ’n meningsopname wat Call42 gedoen het. Die Call42-inisiatief is in Stellenbosch begin deur sakelui en het met ’n nasionale vraelys afgeskop. Die vraelys is ontwerp om die struikelblokke te identifiseer wat Christene in die gesig staar wat die uitleef van God se roeping by die werk betref. Meer as 1 300 kerkleiers, studente, jongwerkendes, sake-eienaars en sakebedieninge het landswyd deelgeneem aan die opname. An amazing adventure into realm of human synergy There’s enchanting entertainment for the whole family this December at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory. Back by popular demand, the production Swoop received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike when it ran at Kalk Bay Theatre recently. Swoop tells the story of a young boy who embarks on an amazing adventure, discovering how the world around us is part of an expertly designed ecosystem, and how we as human beings are connected to it, and to each other. Blending puppetry, audiovisual, live music and a beautiful narrative, Swoop aims to remind us where we belong, and how we fit in. It is a story of hope, courage and the sensible side of human nature. Produced by the Imbewu Trust, and devised by the director and the cast, Swoop features rising young performers Iman Isaacs, Harrison Makubalo, Shaun Acker and Shaun Gabriel Smith under the direction of acclaimed director Pieter Bosch Botha, who also did the lighting design. Based on an original story by Hilda Cronje, adaptation is by Karen Jeynes, set design is by Maike Hitzeroth and the

shadow puppets are designed by Julia Anastopolous. The puppets are also designed and manufactured by The Space Behind the Couch (Beren Belknap, Merryn Carver and Jzadir Du Plessis). Buckets of rum for the scurvy Johannesburg bands, Part-Time Pirates and After Robot are joining forces with local bands when they tour Cape Town this month. Pirate-themed rock band Part-Time Pirates draw their inspiration from a variety of bands, artists and places, ranging from Alestorm to Fokofpolisiekar, while After Robot is an experimental alternative rock band. The Rum Bucket Tour kicks off on 12 December at The Jolly Roger with Very Ape and Someday Rush. Very Ape will join the bands again on 13 December when they play at Obz Café, be-
fore the tour moves to The Nameless Pub on 14 December, also with Very Ape and Skin and Bone. On 15 December, the Rum Bucket Tour will be at Rabbit Hole with De Wallen, No.15 and Kevin Rule. Part Time Pirates and After Robot will be doing an unplugged set at Caturra Coffee Bar on 16 December with Very Ape and Karla Valentine. Henri born to be an entertainer LOUISA STEYL From performing in his parents’ hotel to representing South Africa in the World Championships for Performing Arts, Henri Kriel is a born entertainer. “I think it was forced on me by my parents,” Henri jokes. He recalls how he has been singing since the age of two. His parents owned a hotel in the Karoo and with no late night entertainment; he would get to entertain the guests. “They used to call me up to sing David Kramer and Anton Goosen and whatever else I could remember,” Henri reminisces. At school, he was involved with the Fraserburg Logan Toneelfees and even spent time at the Waterfront Theatre School. He received amateur drama recognition for his part in Peter Pan in Neverland at the
Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West, but it was in his matric year that Henri knew he wanted to be a performer. He entered the Championship of Performing Arts and was sent to Los Angeles to represent South Africa. “I got exposed to what it can be like on that scale,” he says. Henri flew home with a gold medal for drama, silver for singing his own composition and was crowned as the overall world champion for 13- to 19-year-olds. His trophy was so big, it had to be dismantled to get it on the plane. “All of a sudden I realised there was a possibility for me to do something with music,” he says. After a brief stint in Johannesburg, studying at AFDA, and going to Bible school, Henri says he finally realised he couldn’t ignore his call to music. In between, Henri has acted in both Egoli
and 7de Laan, but singing remains his first love. His dream is to be in Los Angeles, where he can strike a balance between acting and singing, but he points out he isn’t interested is musical theatre. “My vision is quite clear,” he says: “It’s music and movies, and in that order.” Henri recorded his EP at the beginning of this year, which shows off three aspects of his music. There’s a ballade, a middle-of-theroad rock song and a bit of a heavier rock song. He also performs with a live band and says he would describe his on-stage sound as bluesy folk rock. Brigitte van Aswegen was one of the stand up paddlers who took full advantage of the perfect downwind conditions last Wednesday, winning the women’s class in 50:58.

In perfect conditions Last Wednesday saw the paddlers clock the fastest times to date in the Primi Downwind Dash as a pure south-easter chased the competitors to the finish line. The wind of between 32 to 43 knots, no swell and spring tides draining Table Bay, contributed to an exciting downwind conveyor-belt of a race. The field totalling 44 stand up paddlers and 40 surfskiers made it a great spectacle as sand was flying and the water was lifting in the gusts. From the start it was clear that two paddlers had their eye on this race. Greg Bertish set off like a rocket, immediately getting a gap while Ivan van Vuuren paddled out deeper and flew down the course. Chris Bertish arrived at the race with three minutes to go to the start and was still chatting to the time-keepers when the whistle blew. He nevertheless set off in his usual style and by halfway had cleared everyone but the two frontrunners.
By the entry to Small Bay, Chris had caught his brother and Ivan, and they crossed the sand-spit together. Chris, nursing a mild chest-infection told Greg to go for gold in the last 200 m sprint. Ivan however would not have any of it and put his head down and just beat Greg in the run-up to the flags – setting a new course record in the process with a time of 42:57. Greg also beat the previous record with his 43:02 while Chris eclipsed his previous course record with 43:29. Following were Colin Heckroodt, Dylan Frick and Brad Adams. Brigette van Aswegen nearly broke the sub-50 minutes mark with an excellent time of 50:58. Mishka Steyn, Karina Figl and Monica Wohlgemuth (fourth) also finished under one hour for the first time ever. Ethan Koopmans set a new junior course record with his time of 47:37, and Joshua Robertson again had to settle for second. First-timer Matthew Maxwell finished third in 53:50.
Ultimate in wrestling bouts The Parow Civic Centre will once again host the ultimate Africa Wrestling Alliance experience on Tuesday 11 December. This one is big, featuring the usual motley crew of wrestling talent including the likes of The Oz, Johnny Palazzio and more. This wouldn’t be the AWA’s top calendar event however if it weren’t for some very special additions such as the Coca Cola Royal Rumble. In this bout 22 men will enter the ring to contend for the Coca Cola Royal Rumble title and the sought-after belt that accompanies it. No man will have to work harder for the belt than the Bulldog, last year’s winner and subsequently the title defender. With this honour comes the immense pressure of being the first man to enter the squared circle. Spectators will also be treated to three title matches.
