R1m drugs in joint op ANDRÉ BAKKES
Two Nigerian nationals were arrested on Thursday after authorities discovered a million rand’s worth of drugs on their premises in Goodwood. The Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) unit and Maitland Flying Squad responded to a tip-off by a member of the public and organised a joint operation. At 12:00 they raided a flat in Surrey Street and after discovering
drugs, foreign currency and cellphones in the flat, two middle-aged suspects were arrested. According to Goodwood Police spokesperson, W/O Wayne Theunis, 58,2g of heroin, 1,2kg of tik, 66,2g of cocaine and two mandrax tablets were found. They also confiscated eight cellphones and R87 696 worth of foreign currencies – 535 UK pounds, 110 euros, 463 US dollars and 430 Australian dollars. Theunis elaborates: “The officers found the drugs in a hidden com-
partment next to the fridge. “We are trained to search for hidden compartments and some of the guys have an eye to spot these. “They work with similar situations almost daily, so they know what to look out for.” Theunis admits nonetheless that this is one of the biggest drug busts in the vicinity this year. He adds that it is suspected that the two Nigerians were dealing in the drugs. “The public must know that Goodwood Police have a zero toler-
ance regarding drugs. “It doesn’t matter how much you have on you, you will be arrested,” he warns, before adding that they make drug-related arrests on a daily basis. Almost to prove this point, Theunis mentions another incident last week when four suspects were apprehended for being in possession of dagga. “Officers searched two houses in Goodwood after members of the public tipped us off. We found 160g of dagga with a street value of about
R700 to R1 000.” In both these incidents, police received information from the public which lead to arrests. He concludes by saying that the public can contact Goodwood Police on 021 592 4430 and ask for W/O Terrence Nortje if they have any suspicion that there might be drugs on a premises. The 32 and 41-year-old Nigerian nationals appeared in theGoodwood Magistrate’s Court this week Monday and the case was postponed to 2 April for bail application.
