T
he Epping informal market is a dirt pool of vagrancy and drug-addicts running amok. Customers might think twice before buying food at this informal market as drug-addicts are scaring them away. This is according to Mandy Rodgers*, an informal trader who believes that her fruit business is at risk, due to these factors. “Drug addicts and vagrants scare and pester my customers away,” she says. Rodgers is also worried about littering, illegal shebeens and the lack of public toilets. “My family has been selling fruit here for more than 18 years. The problem is that this is an informal trading area where there are no ablution facilities or running water, so it stinks,” Rodgers says.
This might be the reason why customers prefer the formal market next door, Rodgers says.
Vagrants “Who would want to buy from a dirty place where vagrants bother you or where drugs are being sold?” Rodgers asks. Ward councillor Brain Watkyns says that the council is aware of the prostitution and drugs. In the past 17 years Watkyns says the issues related to the informal market have started a heated debate between the traders at the formal and informal markets. According to him some of the formal traders do not want to amalgamate the markets together. Trudy van Niekerk is a resident in Durbanville. She says she drives along the Epping informal market regularly when she
goes to work. “I see stray animals and children along this road and I get very mad,” van Niekerk says. She says she is concerned about the people living across from the Epping informal market who litter in the area. “I get the feeling that nobody takes care of these people. More and more people are living there,” van Niekerk says. According to Watkyns, these people are squatting illegally. “We have fenced off the area before, but the squatters break the fence. There is a multitude of problems in that area. Some of which include traffic problems and health problems. One of the biggest issues is that of drugs.” According to Watkyns there are options available for the city to remove the squatters, who are also responsible for the drug
peddling. This, according to him, will take place as soon as negotiations with the Epping formal market have been finalised. This will include regular inspections and a surveillance camera on the Thornton side of the market. “Negotiations on the two markets amalgamating are still taking place,” he says. He also says that the litter will be cleaned and that the police will be notified about the dagga, which is allegedly being sold. He adds that the city has removed abandoned vehicles, wooden crates and litter. “We are cleaning up the area and portable toilets were provided for the area,” he says. Watkyns adds: “This is a good example of people demanding services from the city, while they themselves are operating illegally.” *Rodgers is not her real name.

No Eskom loadshedding ... maybe ANDRÉ BAKKES Emails have been doing the rounds to indicate that Cape Town is on the verge of loadshedding to save electricity. The loadshedding schedule, which is available on the City of Cape Town’s website, will however only be activated if Eskom decides to implement loadshedding. TygerBurger posed a few questions to the energy provider, and at the time of going to press, spokesperson Goitsemang Nkomo said: “Eskom does not currently have plans to loadshed and has not issued a loadshedding schedule.” This news in itself baffled spokespersons at the City of Cape Town, since they were under the impression that loadshedding is im-
minent. National spokesperson for Eskom, Hilary Joffee clarified the matter: “Look, we do not have anything planned now. We work from hour to hour, not day to day.” “Of course we have a plan, but it depends when you ask. Right now (Monday late afternoon), the demand is very high again, so we urge the consumer to be considerate.” “We have deals with big energy users, but it is residential customers who must help us avoid loadshedding by conserving energy in the evening in winter. “It is a challenge for us to keep the lights on, but people can rest assured that we are doing everything we can to avoid loadshedding.” Peak demand this winter is forecast at 36.8
GW, slightly lower than in 2012, but this is the average for an hour – the “peak within the peak” can go as high as 37 GW – 38 GW. Despite the peak demand being forecasted to be lower than last year, the odds of loadshedding are increased when one considers that Eskom will apparently have to perform long-duration planned maintenance during the coldest months. There are four steps the consumer can do to ease the load during peak times (17:00 to 21:00). These are to switch off all geysers and pool pumps, switch off all non-essential lighting, find alternatives to electrical heaters and respond to the Power Alert messages by switching off all appliances that are not being used.

Hot soup: The first Bothasig Scouts, Cubs and Rovers joined together in Goodwood to help those in need with hot soup for the cold weather. They worked hard on Friday 7 June in the cold weather. After cutting and slicing onions and vegeta bles they made 68 litres of soup and collected seven loaves of bread which were handed over to the Salvation Army in Goodwood – a successful effort on their part.

He encourages more people to join and assist with patrolling and keeping an eye on Edgemead. Cormack says patrol procedures have been relaxed to accommodate members who wish to start their patrols from home, rather than signing on at the office before commencing their patrols. “There are certain conditions attached to starting patrols from home and these are made available to members only. “The idea is to encourage non-patrolling members to start patrols as we need more eyes on the road during the day and night,” Cormack said. The Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch (ENW) does not stand down for criminals. This was discussed at an open general members’ meeting which informed the Edgemead neighbourhood about the ongoing crime. The meeting was held on Thursday 30 May at Edgemead Primary School and was aimed at exchanging information between the Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch (SGNW), the ENW and the community. The meeting is held every three months to provide feedback to the community on topics loosely related to crime trends. More than 40 people attended the meeting. SGNW chairman, Trevor Burger and his team attended the meeting to share some of their own experiences and tactics on how to fight crime in the areas surrounding the N7. Mark Horstman from the District Watch presented safety tips which were well received by attendees. Ian Cormack, chairman of ENW says: “Horstman emphasised the importance of personal safety such as arming your alarm systems at night, being aware of your surroundings when driving your vehicle and arriving at home, keeping outside lights on when you go out for the evening, reporting all overgrown bushes and broken lights to the municipality to fix. “Residents really need to be more vigilant and report all suspicious activities to the police.” Cormack noted that the ENW has 188 members, which is an indication that the number of members has grown significantly over the past two years. “Although this seems to be a high

Litter has always been an ever-present problem in the Goodwood community. During June, N1 City Mall, in conjunction with nearby Goodwood schools are making a concerted effort to focus on the value of caring for their surroundings, by turning litter into glitter. Goodwood se eie ‘Lady and the Tramp’ TINA BURGER Die noodkreet van ’n boemelaar en sy geliefde hond het ’n barmhartige vrou se ore bereik. Nou sorg sy darem dat dié twee soms iets te ete kry en het sy selfs al gereël dat die hond gesteriliseer word. Warm komberse en hondepille is van die ander voordele wat dié twee nou kry nadat ’n diere-organisasie ook ingegryp het. Ellen Husselmann werk in ’n kompleks oorkant die veld waar Hilton Abrahams en sy hond, Lady, soms skuiling teen die winterkoue vind. “Ek het een oggend opgelet dat die twee hier oorkant die veld sit. Ek het hulle innig jammer gekry,” sê Husselmann. Sy het dadelik op hul noodkreet reageer en kos vir Abrahams en Lady gegee. “Ek het vir hom koffie gebring en vir hulle ’n paar eetgoedjies gevat. Ek het later ook met ’n diere-organisasie gereël dat Lady reggemaak moet word.” Inspekteur Frazer Grieve is deel van die anonieme organisasie wat Lady help. Hy bring af en toe hondepille en ’n nuwe lyfband vir Lady. ’n Paar warm komberse is ook deur die organisasie aan Abrahams geskenk. Lady is ’n saggeaarde straathond wat Goodwood se koue wintersweer moet trotseer saam met haar boemelaar-eienaar.
En hierdie kruising tussen ’n pitbull, staffie en bulterriër word ’n ware oppasser wanneer die son sak. Lady waak snags oor haar baas. Sy is volgens Abrahams sy “regterhand”, “kind” en “die liefde van sy lewe”. “Ek het haar saam met my van Windhoek af gebring,” sê Abrahams. Hy sê dat die klein weerlose tefie destyds sy aandag op die wildplaas getrek het waar hy gewerk het. “Ek het vir die eienaar gevra of ek Lady mag kry. En vandaar is sy saam met my Kaapstad toe.” Abrahams het letterlik opgesaal en met ’n perd die “son ingery” totdat hy in Kaapstad beland het. Abrahams sê dat hy liewer is vir Lady as wat hy ooit vir enige mens sal wees. “Sy is ’n goeie waghond, maar sy is ook my beste vriend en my kameraad,” sê die spraaksame Abrahams. Die twee van hulle sit in die veld en geniet die warm son teen ’n vuil muur in Vasco-boulevard in Goodwood. “Sy is my familie hier. Ek en Lady loop Kaapstad se strate plat en soek skuiling vir die winter,” sê Abrahams. Abrahams glo dat as meer mense diereliefhebbers was, sou die wêreld ’n beter plek wees. “Lady het my al baie aande gered van slange, vure en mense wat my wil seermaak. Dis die ding van ’n hond, jy weet. Hulle moor nie, hulle steel nie, hulle maak nie seer nie. Ek is baie lief vir Lady,” sê Abrahams.

CountryOpskop was ’n ware skouspel! ANDRÉ BAKKES Nostalgie en inspirasie het Sondag getrou in ’n melodieuse skouspel by GrandWest se Grand-arena. Die uitmuntende BakgatCountry-Opskop, waarvan TygerBurger die mediaborg is, het die gehoor op hul voete gehad met bekende liedjies deur beroemde kunstenaars. “Country road take me home’’, “Tiny Bubbles” en “Rarest Flowers’’ was net die regte medisyne om jou ou platespeler en LP’s af te stof, ’n cowboy-hoed en stewels aan te trek, en terug te gaan in tyd.
Die Afrikaanse cowboy, Lance James, het die taak van seremoniemeester verrig en die Musiekwêreld-orkes het verseker dat die vertonings altyd vars gebly het. Al was die Opskopvertoning gedoop in herinneringe, het Die Campbells gewaarborg dat vandag se country-musiek nie afgeskeep word nie. Teen die einde van die vertoning was elkeen van die kunstenaars op die verhoog en het hulle gesorg vir ’n uitsonderlike country-klimaks toe Die Campbells en James omring was deur sterre Ricus Nel, Matt Hurter, Wynand en Cheree Strydom, Barbara Ray, Alan Ladd, Billy Forrest, Ma-
nie Jackson en nuweling Sulize Bester. Bakgat-Promosies se eienaar, Christo Booyens, is baie in sy noppies ná nog ’n suksesvolle Country-Opskop. “Dit was die eerste keer dat ons ’n band gehad het! Hulle het baie hard geoefen en ons is baie dankbaar vir hulle bydrae. Ons is natuurlik net so dankbaar dat so baie mense opgedaag het. Daar was meer as 4 000 mense,” sê hy. TygerBurger was die hoofborg en dan het Bokradio, Radio Helderberg en Musiekwêreld in Bellville ook ’n rol gespeel in die skouspel. Gaan na TygerBurger se webtuiste vir meer foto’s.

TINA BURGER ’n Wiskunde-foendie in ons midde is op pad na Nigerië waar hy Kaapstad sal verteenwoordig by Pan African se wiskunde-olimpiade (PAWO). Mowzer, ’n vorige wiskunde-olimpiadewenner en ’n graad nege-leerling by Fairbairn College in Goodwood, sê wiskunde vereis slegs oefening. Mowzer sal aan die einde van Junie teen wêreldklas-wiskundiges deelneem vir die eerste plek by PAWO. Mowzer sal vergesel word deur spanleiers, Maciek Stankiewicz en Phil Labuschagne. Die span se deelname is gekoördineer deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde-stigting (SAWS) en geborg deur die Harmony Gold-mynmaatskappy. Topleerders van elke land moet jaarliks aan verskillende rondes deelneem om tot die eindronde deur te dring. Die kompetisie is tans in sy derde fase waar die internasionale streekwenners teen mekaar in Nigerië en Columbia meeding. “Ek werk ten minste 12 ure ekstra per week aan wiskunde, en dit sluit nie klastyd in nie,” sê Mowzer. Met oefening en harde werk kan skoliere en studente maklik wiskunde in die eksamen deurkom, glo hy. Maar Mowzer glo ook dat hy nie sonder die hulp en ondersteuning van sy onderwyser dié vak kon bemeester nie. “Meneer Pieter Botes, my wiskunde-onderwyser, is baie behulpsaam en vriendelik. Dit is juis my onderwysers wat my verlede jaar by die olimpiade ingeskryf het,” sê Mowzer. Botes beklemtoon die belangrikheid rondom die rol wat ’n onderwyser in ’n kind se lewe speel. “Ek glo dit is die benadering wat onderwysers volg wat deel uitmaak van die leerling se sukses. “Kinders moet vir hulself kan dink en onderwysers moet nie die leerwyse van ’n kind probeer manipuleer nie,” sê Botes. Hy voel egter dat hy net ’n klein bydrae tot Mowzer se suksesverhaal gemaak het. Janecke de Wet, wiskundevakhoof by Fairbairn College, glo dat daar ’n aantal hulpmiddels beskikbaar is wat kinders deesdae kan gebruik om hul wiskundige

Wiskunde, volgens De Wet, is nie beperk tot die klaskamer nie. “In die algemeen sal skoliere verskillend reageer op verskillende leermetodes as gevolg van faktore soos emosionele intelligensie. “Daar is baie hulpmiddels beskikbaar in die vorms van studiegroepe, handleidings en ekstra klasse in wiskunde. Suksesvolle onderwysers sal kinders se sterkpunte en leermetodes dan kan identifiseer,” sê De Wet. Bernie Marchand, skoolhoof van Fairbairn College, sê: “Ons moedig ons leerders aan om hard te werk op akademiese vlak en hul beste te gee.” Mowzer sê sy pa is sy inspirasie vir PAWO. Hy sien vreeslik baie uit om Nigerië toe te gaan. “Ek het reeds van graad sewe af myself toegespits op wiskunde. Ek kan nie wag vir die olimpiade nie,” sê hy. Mowzer sê hy wil graag sy mede-skoliere en ander kinders van Goodwood aanmoedig om wiskunde te oefen omdat dit baie deure vir die toekoms oopmaak. “Ek wil graag eendag elektroniese- en rekenaaringenieurswese swot. “Ek glo dat as jy wiskunde as ’n vakkeuse neem en daarin presteer, kan jou beroepskeuses net uitbrei.” Hy beplan om die olimpiade doelgerig aan te pak.

“O
ns is net soos enige ander skool. Al verskil is ons leerders is almal hospitaalpasiënte en baie van hulle is terminaal siek. Sommige is bedlêend en aan rolstoele gekluister, en die meeste spandeer lang tye in die hospitaal om mediese redes en vir behandeling. Maar ons streef daagliks daarna om vir al ons leerders net die beste te kan gee… én hoop vir die toekoms.” Só sê Susan Potgieter, hoof van die Tygerberg-hospitaalskool (TBHS), wat op die perseel van die Tygerberg-hospitaal geleë is. Die skool wat in 1959 begin is, het nou jaarliks altesaam sowat 1 600 leerders en die klasse word in multi-grade (van 1-12) en multi-tale (Afrikaans en Engels) aangebied.
Hoop Die TBHS se hoërskool-afdeling heet iThuba, wat ‘hoop’ beteken, en hier word veral leerders met psigiatriese probleme geleer. Die skool volg ook die ABET-program, waardeur die leerders dalk eendag vir ’n ambag aan ’n FET-kollege kan gaan studeer. Die Tygerberg-hospitaalskool is vanjaar een van drie begunstigdes van TygerBurger se Want ons Kan!/Cause we Can!-konsert, wat op Sondag 28 Julie in die Bellville-burgersentrum gehou word. Al die kaartjie-inkomste gaan direk na die begunstigdes, wat self die kaartjies moet verkoop. Potgieter sê hul dag begin om 08:00 wanneer drie onderwysers opnames van leerders vir die dag by al die hospitaalsale gaan doen. Daarna kom hulle terug skool toe, om skoolwerk vir die leerders te kry wat bedlêend en te siek is om skool toe te gaan. “Daar is 12 sale in die hospitaal en die getal kinders wat ons opvoed verskil van dag tot dag. Daar is geen vaste bywoningsregister-
nie, want dit verander elke dag na gelang van hoeveel kinderpasiënte daar in die hospitaal is,” sê Potgieter. “Die meeste van die leerders kan ook nie gemeng word nie, want hulle het verskillende mediese probleme, swak immuunstelsels en sommige het ernstige en aansteeklike siektes.” Sy sê die kinders wat skool bywoon, moet ook eers soggens eet en medikasie gebruik voor hulle skool toe kan gaan. Al die leerders moet om 12:00 weer terugbesorg word by die verskillende hospitaalsale vir etenstyd. Die onderwysers gaan doen ook dan opvolgbesoek aan die leerders by wie hulle die oggend skoolwerk gelos het. Hul amptelike werkdag eindig om 14:30. “Wanneer die kinders teruggaan sale toe voel hulle beter, want die skool is ’n bekende omgewing, maar baie was nog nooit in ’n skool nie. Dis hartverskeurend,” sê Potgieter. Sy spog dat die skool ook die nasionale kurrikulum volg soos deur die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement (WKOD) voorgeskryf word, maar nie sport doen nie.
Oefening “Ons kry weekliks kinderkinetika-studente van die kollege wat vir die leerders fisieke oefening kom aanbied. ’n Groep vrywilligers het ook onlangs aangebied om ons leerders met hul leesvaardighede te help,” sê sy. Die skool bied ook weekliks kunsklasse aan, en elke twee weke bak-en-brou-lesse. Geen van die leerders wat die skool bywoon betaal egter skoolgeld nie, omdat hulle almal pasiënte van Tygerberg-hospitaal en uit minderbevoorregte omstandighede afkomstig is. Die skool ontvang slegs ’n basiese staatstoelaag en is verder heeltemal afhanklik van skenkings en geldinsamelings. Die gewilde jaarlikse damestee is al geldinsameling wat

die skool kan hou weens ’n tekort aan vrywilligers om dit te help reël. Vanjaar se damestee was ’n groot sukses en die gasspreker by die geleentheid was Ellen Pakkies. “Geld bly maar altyd ’n uitdaging. Ons streef daagliks daarna om vir elke kind net die beste te kan gee. Ons moet alles insit. Ons probeer om emosioneel positief te bly. Die onderwysers moet emosioneel baie sterk wees, want jy kan nie net jammer voel nie, jy moet die kinders bemoedig en hulle laat uitsien na die toekoms,” sê Potgieter. Sy sê die TygerBurger se Want ons kan!/ Cause we Can!-konsert is soos manna uit die
hemel, want met dié geld beoog die skool om weer ’n rekenaarsentrum met ordentlike rekenaars en stelsel in te rig. Die vorige rekenaarstelsel het ’n paar jaar gelede ingegee. “Die ouer leerders vind veral baat hierby, omdat hulle rekenaarvaardighede kan aanleer en navorsing kan doen,” sê Potgieter. Ander dringende behoeftes sluit in skryfbehoeftes en die opgradering van die speelarea vir die leerders se veiligheid. Help others to wrap up warm this winter While we have been blessed with some sun over the last few days, there are still harsh winter nights ahead. And while most of us are lucky enough to spend cold nights wrapped up and warm, there are many who do not share this privilege. More than 2 000 Capetonians have already been displaced in recent storms, but it’s not just humans who need warmth. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for animals too. One very simple way to help both humans, and our four-legged friends, is the donation of blankets. There are many organisations around Cape Town, like the Cape Town Angels and the Animal Anti Cruelty league, who are helping to distribute blankets to those in need. A decent, warm, polar fleece blanket costs as little as R45 and can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Polar fleece blankets are not always as thick as others, but some organisations request these, as they dry quicker than traditional thick blankets, a huge advantage when sunshine is scarce. A quick Google search for “Donate blankets Cape Town” brings up more than enough suggestions of organisations who are collecting blankets this winter. There’s not much you can buy for about R45 these days. For a lot of us, that’s the cost of a take-away lunch. So, why not skip the take-aways (your body will thank you) and buy a blanket instead? Go ahead, make someone’s winter.

Waarskuwing oor brande Dis seker ’n familiekwaal. My oupa aan vaderskant is dood toe ’n vriend se huis afgebrand het. Twee jaar gelede moes ek vlamme trotseer om ’n paar goedjies uit my brandende plaashuis te red. Laasweek was dit my oudste seun se beurt. ’n Les uit die jongste brande: Indien u kaggel of stoof met ’n metaal-skoorsteenpyp in die dakruimte het, moet jy dringend ’n plan maak. Selfs vlekvrye staal is gevaarlik, want die hitte wat uitgestraal word, breek isoleringsmateriaal se weerstandigheid teen vuur mettertyd af en dit, of ’n voël- of muisnes, vat maklik vlam. ’n Baksteen-skoorsteen tot bokant die dak, of ten minste ’n asbes-tipe omhulsel, is die enigste veilige opsies. Só ’n brand is ’n nare besigheid. Dankie aan die talle wonderlike mense, onder wie vreemdelinge, wat spontaan helpende hande uitgereik het aan my seun en sy gesin. Min het ons geweet dat ons hulle later die middag in ’n uiters kritieke situasie naby die skooltjie sou nodig kry. Sers. Doubell en konst. Booysen was binne enkele
minute op die toneel en het hierdie situasie op die mees sensitiewe en deernisvolle wyse hanteer. Dit het my weer eens met soveel respek vir ons polisie gevul. Hulle het nie ’n maklike taak nie. Animal abuse kids should be punished In response to the article “Cruelty on little farm of horrors”, TygerBurger, 5 June” I was shocked to read about the incidents of animal abuse on the Klein-akker Farm. How young children can do such terrible things to animals is unimaginable and a sign of what is happening to our youth. The fact that “no charges were brought due to the young age of the children involved” is an even bigger injustice. What is going to deter these children from continuing with their behaviour if there is no punishment when they are caught? These children need to be apprehended and punished... If, at such a young age, they treat animals in such a cruel way, how will they treat people when they are grown up? ANIMAL LOVER Vredekloof

Paramedics took excellent care of me I would like to thank the following members of ER 911 for their outstanding service. On the 29 April my hip broke and I was in severe pain. My daughter called 911 to fetch me so I could be admitted to Panorama hospital. When the medics arrived at my house, they immediately attended to me, with the utmost care and also reassured me that they would take good care of me. I need not be afraid as they would handle me to the best of their ability as I was in tremendous pain. I could see the empathy and dedication in the manner they treated me. I have the greatest respect for the following members: Ryan Bell, Shaun Feltman and Ricardo Psalm. They were excellent in the manner which they treated me and I wish to extend my gratitude towards these medics and I would like to wish them well in their future career. remainder aside in saucepan. To make masala, pound garlic, salt and chillies in a mortar and pestle and combine with other ingredients. Smear over fish/seafood mix, and fry seafood in a separate well heated pan, until cooked and firm. Remove from pan and keep warm. Combine buttermilk, tomato, cumin, cloves, all spice, cardamom seeds and cinnamon, add to onions in saucepan, and simmer for 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning. Sprinkle cooked rice and lentils over and arrange the seafood by gently stirring. Spoon preserved onions and spice mix over and a dot of butter, sprinkle water over and close saucepan tightly. Steam over high heat for 57 minutes, reduce heat and simmer low for another 5 minutes. Serve hot with tomato and onion salad or sambals of your choice. Gesin boer saam vir topwyne DESIREÉ RORKE
D
aar is bitter min pa’s en seuns wat suksesvol kan saam boer. Dis gewoonlik ’n “gevegsfront” van kopstampe en haakplekke wat baie boere eerder soos die plaag vermy. Die Steenkamps van Groenland-wynlandgoed is egter ’n unieke uitsondering met ’n pa-en-seun-wenkombinasie wat dié landgoed al ’n string wyntoekennings oor die jare besorg het – 45 om presies te wees. Die TygerBurger het Dinsdagmiddag ’n draai gaan maak by pa en seun in die gesellige proekamer. En so tussen die proe deur besef mens hoekom die twee só ’n gedugte span is. Die wynmaker, Kosie Steenkamp, en sy seun, Piet, assistentwynmaker en wingerdboukundige, boer al sedert 2001 saam op die pragtige plaas in die Bottelaryheuwels – vrugbare wynland wat al drie geslagte aan die familie behoort. En dis juis die dinamiese saamwerk tussen pa en seun wat die sukses van die plaas verseker. “Ons is beste vriende, ons bly saam, werk saam, kuier saam, braai saam en kyk natuurlik saam rugby,” sê Kosie, terwyl hy die goeie verhouding tussen hulle verduidelik. “En as ons die dag ’n kopstamp ondervind, gaan die son nie sak sonder dat dit uitgepraat is nie,” voeg hy beslis by. Dis ooglopend dat die pa en seun groot liefde, respek, waardering en vertroue tussen hulle deel. “My pa is ’n baie ‘cool’ superboer met sy kort denimbroek en lang kouse. Hy lyk nes ’n regte boer moet lyk,” vertel Piet laggend as hy besin oor sy kinderjare op die plaas wat hy nog nooit verlaat het nie. “As ons as jonges partytjies in die skuur gehou het, het ek altyd my pa geroep sodat almal kan sien hoe ’n boer nou moet lyk,” sê hy trots. En Kosie het dieselfde respek vir Piet.
Groenland se drie geslagte – Kosie, Piet en Jacobus Steenkamp in die wingerd. “Ons is albei boere in murg en been, maar iemand moet die bemarking doen,” sê hy oor dié sakeverpligting wat Piet ook sedertdien oorgeneem het. En kort op seun Piet se hakke, is kleinseun Jacobus (5). “Daar is geen twyfel daaraan dat hy ’n boer gaan wees nie. Hy leer van kleins af oor die boerdery en is amper nooit sonder ’n snoeiskêr in die hand nie. “Hy is baie erg oor die plaas,” sê Piet oor sy seun, wat skamerig buite die proekamer rondhang tydens die onderhoud, snoeiskêr in die hand. Nes die mense van Groenland, is die wyne ook eg, heilsaam en eerlik. Dis geen wonder hulle spog met soveel topverkopers nie.“Ons glo in waarde vir geld,” sê Kosie van sy wyne. This singing talent is supersized DESIREÉ RORKE
N
ext time you pull into the McDonald’s in Brackenfell, listen carefully. You might just hear the angelic voice of 21-year-old songstress Chesna Lategan singing along as she goes about her work routine. Chesna from Scottsville in Kraaifontein, has recently made it to the Top 6 of the Voice of McDonald’s (VOM) competition, outperforming almost 200 hopefuls countrywide. VOM is McDonald’s worldwide employee singing contest, which showcases the talents of its crew and managers. As the only Capetonian among the top six finalists of the competition, Chesna is very proud of her achievement. “I’m hot and I know it” says the vibrant go-getter. Chesna who joined McDonald’s in 2012, is a full time Educare course student at Northlink College in Goodwood and works at the Brackenfell branch on a part-time basis.
Always singing She was encouraged by her manager to enter the competition and it “just made sense” for her to enter. “I’ve been singing all my life, I started in pre-school, sang in the church youth choice and even joined an international jazz band in high school, I really love it”.
“Because I work on a part-time basis, I arrived at work one day to find there was a big surprise for me. I found out I had been named in the top 10 and after that my manager called me to tell me I had made it into the top 6. I called my mother and we started crying we were so happy.” Chesna packed her bags for Johannesburg and was welcomed to a whole new world of great learning and experiences. “Making it into the top 6 has really boosted my confidence”, she says. As part of the South African VOM top 6, Chesna received mentoring and training from celebrated jazz musician and VOM judge Judith Sephuma, and received also an opportunity to record her own rendition of Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love” in a professional recording studio. “Judith Sephuma has taught me so much about my voice and how to project it, it’s all so exciting.” McDonald’s South Africa has run the competition for five years, with Sephuma who this year selected the most talented of McDonald’s South Africa’s over 9 000 employees. The competition is run in 70 countries with 30 live events and the winners in each of these will compete to be in the top four in each of McDonald’s areas of the world –

Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Europe. Latin America and North America. These global semi-finalists, who will be announced between November and December this year, will then compete in the final rounds at McDonald’s 2014 Worldwide Convention in Orlando.
Professionals Here the finalists will train with some of the world’s best professional music coaches to perform for audiences of up to 15 000 spectators. According to McDonald’s spokesperson Mbali Ndandani, they will also have opportunity to make connections with top music industry executives, producers and performers. “Some have recorded CDs and sing in venues around the world, including numerous McDonald’s events,” she says. Last year’s winner, Australia’s Chrislyn Hamilton, performed with David Foster, Seal, Kelly Clarkson, Keith Urban and Reuben Studdard, recorded a song with LA music producer Ron Fair and a voice part in a DreamWorks animated movie, and appeared on ABC-TV’s top-rated daytime show The View. The FAW is still selling second-hand books and other goods at its containers in Fisantekraal to raise funds. setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group of characters in order to save their world, and ours.
De Wallen: gigs get bigger and bigger LOUISA STEYL “They’re the best live act I’ve ever seen,” and “These guys are fantastic,” are some of the things you’ll hear people say after a De Wallen show. This probably has a lot to do with frontman, Jeandré Swanepoel, whose energetic stage personality has seen him described as a mixture between Mick Jagger and Tim Curry’s “Dr Frank-n-Furter”. It’s not just Jeandré who has people talking though. The rest of the band have some serious musical chops too. Lead guitarist, Justen Hosken, holds a Grade 3 practical in guitar, but will be doing his Grade 5 theory and Grade 8 practical in September, while rhythm guitarist, Pieter Bekker has a Grade 5 in guitar and theory from Unisa. Drummer, Dawid Bosman has his Grade 8 in drums from the Trinity Rock School in London and Jeandré himself has a Grade 6 from Trinity Rock School and Grade 5 from Unisa in guitar. Together with new bassist, Brandon Bell, De Wallen is on a one-band mission to bring “dirty, sexy, rock ’n roll” back. When TygerBurger last spoke to the band, in June last year, the band was just starting out. When asked what has happened since then, Jeandré says: “Aandklas happened!” referring to the Aandklas Battle of the Bands, which the band won last year, earning them a recording deal and a good few high profile gigs. Before that though, the band had a few lineup changes, with Justen joining the family as an extra guitarist and Brandon stepping in to replace their bassist. “There’s always going to be a different energy when you add someone new to the band,” Brandon points out, while Justen confirms that the two brought new influences to the band’s sound. Justen also adds that while their sound is always developing, at its core their music
is “riff-rock”. When any of the members listen to something new, they bring it back to the band and that, Jeandré says, is what keeps them relevant. “It keeps our performances fresh,” he says. The band all cite the Aandklas battle as a milestone in their career. “It just meant to me, that we are busy making it,” Pieter says, adding that it helped the band progress, as opposed to getting stuck in a rut. “It just opened my eyes,” Justen says, explaining that while many bands win things, the opportunity to record made him realise that the band could get serious and that he didn’t want them to waste the opportunity. Jeandré shares Justen’s sentiments, saying: “That was the night when I realised I’m in this for good.” The band recorded with Justin Versfeld at Sun Studios and their production will be done through Patriot Productions. Since winning the Battle, De Wallen have opened for acts like aKing and Van Coke Kartel. “Every gig we play is bigger than the previous one and we just have to keep stepping up our game,” Brandon says. Their next big gig is Friday at Mercury when they will play with Red State and The Footnotes. Tickets for the show cost R30 at the door. De Wallen is hoping to start sending out their first single to radio stations soon. They will launch their album at Aandklas in Stellenbosch in August. Durbanville highest ever season The 2012/2013 cricket season was one of the most successful seasons the Durbanville Cricket Club experienced in its 55 years of existence. Despite the lack of sponsorship, funding and limited sports playing facilities, the club has continuously acknowledged and embraced its social responsibility role. The senior section of the club achieved the following achievements during the season: V WPCA Club of the Year Trophy: 2012/ 2013 season. V First team winners of the WPCA Division 1B League Trophy and Combined 1A/1B Division One Day Championships Trophy. The team was Division 1B AMA 20 semi-finalists and promoted back to WPCA 1A Division. V Second team winners of the WPCA Reserve A Two Day League Trophy. V Third team winners of the WPCA Reserve F Two Day League Trophy and the Day Championships Trophy. An accomplishment achieved two years in a row. V Fourth team ended fourth in the third division A League. V Fifth team ended sixth in the third Division A League. V Sixth team ended second in third Division D League. Promoted to third Division 3C League. V Women’s 1st Team - Ended 3rd in the 40 over League and 3rd in the AMA 20 League in the WPCA Women’s 1st Division. The club plans to expand the current development programmes and activities and invites the community and schools in the

Entries for one of Cape Town’s biggest and most popular road running events, the OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run, have opened. The event takes place on Sunday 13 October and participants can choose to take part in the 21 km half marathon or 10 km run/ walk and five km fun run/walk, which are aimed at families, younger participants and beginners. Last year the event attracted a record field of close to 15 500 participants, and race organiser Atlantic Athletic Club is expecting to host close to 18 000 this year. Stellies dring deur in netbal NINO LOUBSER Die Hoërskool Stellenberg se o.19A-netbalspan het Saterdag op Stellenbosch in die eindronde van die Wes-Kaapse Topskoletoernooi wraak geneem vir sy nederlaag in die uitdunronde die vorige naweek teen De Kuilen en sal die Kapenaars later vanjaar in die nasionale eindronde verteenwoordig. Nadat die Stellies 21-9 met HS Langenhoven (Riversdal) afgereken het en Paarl Gimnasium 17-12 getroef het, het hulle in ’n uitspeelwedstryd teen De Kuilen aanvanklik gesukkel om op dreef te kom. De Kuilen was in werklikheid met rustyd nog 9-7 voor, maar toe kry Stellenberg in die tweede helfte volle beheer om 19-9 te seëvier. Stellies se o.15-span sal ook as ’n Wes-Kaapse kampioen in Augustus in Boksburg sake gaan uitspook ná klinkende oorwinnings Saterdag oor Paarl Gim (14-6) en Lutzville (13-9).

urbanville-Bellville se senior rugbyspan is ná sy oortuigende oorwinning van 48-5 oor Belhar steeds stewig in die wedloop om as die Superliga-kampioen in die WP gekroon te word. Die Durbies – wat veral weens ’n lang rits beserings onlangs ’n terugslag of twee gehad het – is kort op die hakke van die Maties en Ikeys bo-aan die punteleer. En voorts is die Durbanvillers ook op die oomblik die gunsteling om die WP andermaal as die beste nie-universitêre klub in die volgende Gemeenskapstrofee-kompetisie te verteenwoordig. Die klub Hamiltons, wat in ’n wedloop met Durbanville-Bellville is vir deelname aan dié kompetisie, het in die jongste reeks wedstryde onverwags teen Schotsche Kloof/Walmer vasgeval. Die Durbies was teen Belhar met rustyd
reeds 24-0 voor en, hoewel Belhar in die tweede helfte heelwat beter vertoon het, het die tuisspan met drie drieë skuins voor die eindfluitjie ’n bonuspunt-oorwinning verseker.
